But it has not stopped her dream of becoming a star. Piyah films herself performing music videos, which have become a hit on YouTube and Myspace. Piyah was born as Pedro Martell but announced to her parents at the age of 15 that she wanted to transition to becoming a girl. She began buying women's outfits and wearing make-up and is now considering taking hormones and having a sex change operation. Piyah, who has a short spine and appears to have just half a body, had a hard life as a child, losing her mum at eight years old. She was bullied at school and saw her step-mum go through treatment for terminal cancer. Piyah, who has to walk on her hands, has coped with everything by retreating into her own world of music and performing.

Eighteen-year-old Katie Hill was born a boy called Luke. Her boyfriend Arin Andrews was once a girl called Emerald. The sweethearts met through a support group for young transsexuals in their hometown in Oklahoma, USA. Katie underwent gender realignment surgery earlier this year thanks to a $40,000 anonymous donation. Arin, a former beauty pageant contestant, has hormone injections and is working out with his father Mitch to try build a muscular body. Both teenagers shocked their families when they revealed their desire to live as the opposite sex. Katie's father Randy, a US marine, did not speak to her for three years. Nowadays, the young couple has the full support of their parents, who are coming to terms with their children's gender changes.

Schoolboy Arin Andrews has finally had his breasts removed to change gender, just like his girlfriend Katie. Seventeen-year-old Arin, who was raised a girl called Emerald, while Katie, 19, was born as a boy called Luke. Last year Katie had a £25,000 sex change surgery to turn herself into a woman. Now Arin has followed his dream to have a flat, male chest. Since beginning a course of testosterone injections a year ago, Arin has been working out in the gym to create a more muscular body. Until now he constantly had to wear a chest binder to conceal his breasts. However, the former child beauty queen can finally go topless on the beach thanks to the three-hour operation. The sweethearts met through a support group for young transsexuals in their hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA, two years ago.

Transgender couple Mark and Jessica Lynn Cummings have found true love and are planning to get married. Mark, 49, used to be Maritza. In 2003 he transitioned and is now legally recognized as a man. Mark works out in the gym, has a radio show about being transgender and performs his own music. Jessica, 39, was raised Shawn, but was tormented all her life by feelings she was born into the wrong body.
