A Good Idea But Totally Implausible

Two student film makers decide to make a documentary about the Draymen estate which is a crime ridden , violent place blighted by drugs . They are intrigued when they hear about a super strong strain of marijuana and decide to track the production factory

A rather strange type of British horror movie that is part horror , part social commentary and part thriller . Unfortunately while the horror and thriller elements are well done to a degree any pretensions and attempt at social commentary soon becomes lost as the story turns in to a British urban take on " The backwoods brutality " sub genre of horror featuring protagonists finding themselves all alone in a desolate landscape full of mortal dangers . Writer/director deserves some credit in taking a tired formula and trying to do something new with it but everything collapses very quickly when examined in any detail . It's easy setting a story like this in some remote American woodland where psychotic rednecks can abduct and murder people travelling through the location but not here . Britain is a very bureaucratic country where everyone will be on a database and the number of residents and visitors to Draymen going missing would never go unnoticed . Police would investigate , social services would investigate and perhaps more importantly Daily Mail journalists would be splashing the Draymen estate all over their front page . In other words it would be a cause celebre

You have to also stop to ask how far reaching this conspiracy is ? For example a character runs away and jumps on a bus . The driver who is no doubt in league with the cannibalistic marijuana growers lets the characters pursuers on to the bus where they hack their victim to death which is very messy . Ask yourself this though - how do the cannibals clean up the mess within a credible time frame ? The bus would have to be driven somewhere , floors mopped , windows cleaned and probably seats upholstered and yet would no passengers complain that their bus didn't turn up ? Maybe the entire bus station are in on the conspiracy but this seems unlikely . You also have to turn off your brain big time in not realising that this super strength skunk is nonsense . You fertilize it with human flesh and this some how makes it the most addictive substance ever ? I don't think so .

All this is a great shame because COMMUNITY is a low budget Brit horror flick that dares to do something a little bit different and while it does bring up a few tense and suspenseful scenes you're constantly noticing the plot holes these scenes throw up . It's a good example of no matter how well a horror film works on the surface suspension of disbelief is always needed which is why the horror genre isn't well regarded amongst critics

A GOOD WELL MADE LOW-BUDGET BRITISH HORROR.

Community (2012) is a scary, moody, creepy, bleak, dark, paranoid, grimy & gritty almost so real to life pure Horror movie made in that disturbing inbred no rules or morals dysfunctional way like The classic The Texas chainsaw massacre (1974) or Wrong Turn (2003) where a whole family are so apart & isolated from the rest of the world that they function in a primal animal monster way & have no idea about right & wrong!!!

The rough grimy estate named the Draymen estate is dreary, grubby & trashed it looks almost apocalyptic & that's very creepy & gives a terrifying atmosphere that basically anything could happen here & no one would care or even help.

The scary thing is this Horror movie is not far fetched at all & it's very much real in alot of places around England I've seen them myself & they are no go zones especially at night time because you will get beaten up or stabbed they are that bad!!!

The fantasy Horror movie part is the cannibal side to it but everything else is scarily true but hey maybe eating each other is next for real? Wouldn't put anything past how rough they are!!!

So yes the tone is on the edge creepy & the atmosphere is desolate wasteland Danger everywhere style that gets terrifying at night fall & the claustrophobic atmosphere gets so thick as our 2 students are running through the dark gloomy estate & down some dimly lit tunnels being chased by evil looking feral depraved hooded youths, the feel is almost John Carpenter style reminiscent of Assault on precinct 13 (1976) & that's a very good thing!!!

The two student documentary makers are excellent & give fantastic performances for such a low budget flick you can feel the fear & terror they feel & see it in their faces!!! Great performances!!!

This violent Hoodie youth culture is everywhere here in England & at thr time this movie came England was named Broken Britain that's how bad the streets got with evil violent gangs of thugs & this movie came out of that paranoia of whole uncontrollable Communities murdering people & all hooked on drugs it's scary but true & has only gotten MUCH worse!!!

A raw & gritty British HORROR THRILLER.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (in London?)

We're all used to the group of annoyingly-attractive American college kids who take a roadtrip and end up falling foul to a band of psychotic locals. The teens run, they scream, but, try as they might, they can never seem to get out of that backwater town they stopped for gas in.

This is one of those films... only it seems to be set in the inner city. Some might find that a bit hard to believe - that people have no way out of somewhere crawling with people. However, that's not the worst of Community's crimes.

It's about two college kids who are making a documentary on a notorious housing estate, allegedly filled with the dregs of society. One point in the film's favour is that - based on that setting - it could have been a 'found footage' film. It isn't. And that's one of the main reasons I kept watching.

Guess what? The two teens get more than they bargained for when the locals turn psycho on them. Cue the running, the screaming, the capture, the escape, a bit more running and lots more screaming.

I've read some of the other reviews on here and it's clear that this film is taking a lot of harsh criticism. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's a masterpiece, just that it follows a tried and tested pattern that's been done so many times before that there's nothing new here to truly enjoy. The acting and gore is a little suspect at times, but that could be forgiven if the films was a bit more original.

All you have here is another Texas Chainsaw style film, albeit in a different location to the middle of small town America.

Also, if you check out some of the 10/10 ratings for this film, I can't help but be sceptical about whether the film-makers are getting their friends to review the film. Most appear to be from authors who only review this and either one or no other films. Hmm. Am I being too cynical?

Stupid People Doing Stupid Things

A couple of bad actors (sorry, amateur film makers) are making a film about a dodgy estate which seems to be occupied entirely of pot heads and their feral kids. one of the film makers has a secret which she still keeps to herself even when things start going wrong, which was really annoying. and thats about it really. all the characters are just stupid or psychotic. the films attempt to make some sort of social commentary falls flat. the script doesn't seem to know where its going and all it does is get gradually more stupid. i had to fast forward through the 2nd half because i was so damn bored. don't bother. this gives British horror films a really bad name. boring and pointless with no sex, gore or proper violence. a total failure on all counts.

Predictable beyond belief

For a low budget British horror film, COMMUNITY has potential, it's true. It's a grittily realistic little movie in which the budget fits the storyline, chronicling the adventures of a couple of student film-makers who decide to do a segment on a local run-down council estate. Unfortunately for them, their college project soon brings them into contact with some very unsavoury individuals indeed.

COMMUNITY boasts an absolutely wonderful location in its depiction of British at its worst: grubby, run-down streets, overrun by feral youths and occupied by adults who have more in common with some of our simian cousins than the human race. There are some truly icky ideas behind this, and some bizarre characterisations (like the transvestite) which stick in your mind.

A shame that it all falls apart in the second half. The first half boasts an effective atmospheric set-up, with lots of foreboding, but the second half reverts to type: a couple of people trying to escape their captors, and nothing else besides. It's typical 'torture porn' territory, with slim characterisation, although not as gory as it could have been, which is at least something. The acting is only acceptable and the silly twist ending drags things down still further.

Actually Very Good Despite The Current 3.9 Stars Rating

The setting was great, the story was delightfully strange, and the acting was actually pretty good for low budget. Not a lot of jump-scares, but more of a twisting, winding tale of brutal insanity. This movie is very reminiscent of early Troma films, before they went for the buckets of gore and back when they relied more on the shock value of the story itself. The characters in this film were very 'Rob Zombie's House Of 1000 Corpses' oriented in that they were believably trashy and appeared honestly completely insane. I was hesitant going in due to the 3.9 user rating, but was delightfully entertained and pleased. I'm giving it a 6 for it's harsh and unashamed originality and execution.

You would'nt want to live here.

This film has a certain feel of realism, I live on the estate where most of it was shot, (Craylands Basildon, Essex). Sadly the behavior shown is'nt to far from reality as some parents allow kids to roam unattended, and the drug problem is rife. Despite its low budget, there are some effective shocks, and the dark humour comes in handy. Its effectively shot, making good use of run down locations, (many since demolished). The performances are adequate rather than award worthy, but doubt they were aiming for Baftas or Oscars. In the end, its not exceptional, nor a waste of time. If you live near here, it'll be more fun.

My Review Of "Community" 2012

"Community" follows a young college student forced to go undercover into a poor, crime-ridden residential community, where things are even darker than one's nightmares could imagine. She enters the Draymen Estates under the guise of photojournalism/documentary requirements however the real reason she is there with a cameraman is for more self serving desperate needs. The place has become a modern urban legend of horrors. Amongst the sinister stories of unsavory locals and brutal violence, several people have apparently gone missing. But even the police won't go there. "Community" was directed by Jason Ford and stars Jemma Dallender, Elliott Jordan, Paul McNeilly and Terry Bird.

"Community" is a dark, modern satire of poverty, neglect, and crime infested "planned neighborhoods". It is also a very intense urban legend that brings a more horrible nightmare to life. Drug Addiction, Cannibalism and homicidal youths. It is a perfect metaphor for how todays culture is being neglected into a state of self consumption by our own vices and evils. The film is an Indie flick that relies mostly on a couple of pretty decent young actors who portray the naïve students who have the misfortune of entering the "community" known as Draymen Estates. They as well as the f*cked up creepy cast that make up the residents of the estate –kids most definitely included- create one of the darkest chilling movies that I have seen. I set through most of the film with mouth agape, eyes "bugged out" in sheer horror at the intense plot as it unfolded. The movie held me on edge till the bitter end. This film is a very exciting nightmare that plays on modern, urban emotional and personal connections much like stories about cannibals in the subway do! The gore and violence is tops, the acting is standard grade-A Brit quality acting. This is a great gorefest flick that merits watching by modern grindhouse, blood thirsty horror fans.

Dark, original, yet still predictable.

This movie has everything necessary to achieve a nice little tale of horror. A fairly original plot line, reasonable acting by everyone, a good setting, nice editing, directing and sound effects. What more could you need right?

Unfortunately, it makes the mistake of being utterly predictable almost all the way through. It's really sad when a movie tries very hard, only to fall into the too often used clichés that are the salt and spice of horror films.

I won't bother listing these clichés. If you watch the film you'll see them easily enough, and you'll probably agree with me that they sort of pull the originality out of the film. Even that would be forgivable, but the clichés themselves seem to actually DIRECT the flow of the film, leading it to a predictable finish.

It's almost as if I could ask myself leading questions every few minutes:

"They're doing _____, so that means that later _____ will happen." "The main character won't stop doing _____, so later on _____ will happen." "The whole plot is based on _____, therefore _____ type of ending will occur."

etc. Sadly, I was right at least 90% of the time.

It's not a waste of time to watch though, all in all it's a reasonable little thriller. Watch it with a friend or two.

Don't let the haters scare you away from Community

Let me first say that the reviews currently on IMDb are both negative. So I'm very happy to write the first positive review for Community. I'd like to side note that one of the users titled their review as "stupid people doing stupid things." And my first thought was, has this person ever seen a horror film? That's usually the characters job in a horror film is to make stupid choices. But in Community, I completely disagree because the 2 main characters are journalists. Uh, yeah… news flash, journalists take major risks when going after a story… Duh.

Anyways, Right off the bat, the first minute starts with an excruciating scream that pulls you right in to the story. I don't want to give too much away, because this is one of those disturbingly entertaining horror thrillers that are better when you go in not knowing what to expect. I apologize if you don't enjoy this one as much as I did, but I loved it. Writer/Director, Jason Ford, did an excellent job with this film. From the beautifully eerie camera shots to the incredibly creepy characters and mad props on the editing! Mr. Ford did an awesome job freaking me out. I literally had my jaw to the floor the whole movie. And the dude in the red sweatshirt is going to be giving me nightmares tonight! Awesome movie!

I agree with the other positive reviewers here. very, Very, VERY Creepy film...

Okay, this IS indeed a very low budget film; that is pretty obvious. And, usually those can be screwed up VERY easily. However, I honestly found myself quite enthralled and very much drawn into this SERIOUSlY F'd up little community.

First and foremost, I cannot say enough about the excellent use of sound in this film. I noticed a number of similar comments about this from other reviewers here. EXTREMELY effective... I personally really love it when they get super creative with the sound design in Horror films because when it is done right, it really can add to the mood and atmosphere, around which this movie is solidly constructed.

You notice that in all the positive reviews here, that just about EVERYONE mentions the word 'Creepy'...? Well, that is because that is PRECISELY the word that embodies this film. Another thing that I personally appreciated too, was that this movie could have very easily descended into the mind-numbingly boring and ineffective 'Torture Porn' territory. For my taste, I am really glad that they used a measure of restraint so that we could more fully enjoy the type of mood that they were trying to create. And, in my lowly and wretched opinion, I thought they did a very good job with what and who they had. The setting was definitely there to exploit the violence for it's own sake. But, thankfully the film makers were intelligent enough to see exactly where the strengths of this little low budget film were and emphasized them appropriately. Man, ONLY in the UK can they make films like this (ones like 'CITADEL', for example) where they create this powerful, almost otherworldly Mythology about these types of neighbourhoods that is most effective.

Also too, a person who watches this film MUST realize that at times they are using Pitch Black humour, so dark it is almost opaque. The idea, which I'm not going to go into here because it is sort of a Spoiler, but the main premise is certainly unique, something that I have never thought of before, that's for sure. So, this is one of those movies where they are building a mythology and premise that one needs to be able to accept in order to enjoy it. IF you are a hard core 'Realist' and want ALL of your movies to be FULLY realistic and if you are one to roll your eyes if ANYTHING at all strays from what is 'Believable', then you will definitely not like this film. As another good reviewer here said, you MUST be able to suspend disbelief and really allow yourself to get pulled into the story in order to enjoy it, and I completely agree...

I cannot stress this enough, but IF you are the kind of person who likes these kinds of films, then TOTALLY ignore the meaningless 3.x rating and give it a try.

Gritty enough well done low budget Indie Brit Urban Horror story.

I wasn't expecting much from Community given its 3.9 rating here on IMDb, however I quite enjoyed this creepy little Urban Horror. Now I watch a slew of movies, horror movies in particular and there are simply mostly average and below average made movies. Community however, despite it's low budget, was I though above average. Taken in the light of an Urban Horror short story I thought the acting was decent and the use of sound particularly good; this isn't a particularly gory film a lot happens off camera. Taken points few horrors are not formulaic - the likes of Martyrs being an example of a great horror few have seen which breaks that mold. However Community was not a dumb movie like a lot of US horrors. There wasn't academy inspiring material as to why things happened as they didn't however it wasn't just plain dumb, could have been smarter in some points but was smart enough at times too. The premise resonates some points which added to creeping me out, as I grew up in a place where there were estates the police did not enter and some terrible things happened within them, and there's certainly use of symbolism within this movie. And Auntie..creepy or what. Finally I am always one for joking about female leads in horrors generally making bad decisions that causes disasters and I thought this was another one of those, however I was able to suspend disbelief because this wasn't the case entirely here.

Make up your own mind.

Don't know why so many people have given this bad reviews, maybe they like the typical Hollywood schlock.

I just found this very refreshing.

I'm not really a fan of writing wordy reviews so I won't say too much here but it's definitely worth a watch for the uniqueness of it.

There's suspense, gore, intensity and fun. It's not a costly blockbuster so don't expect loads of flashy sets and explosions but because it's low budget the whole look and feel of it is just perfect. Raw.

It's low key but in your face and keeps it more 'real' than some glossy movie on the cover of Empire mag. If you like something a little bit different then I say it's worth taking a chance on.

A cheeky little number.

Okay so it wasn't "perfect" or a "classic"

Still the plot was original and personally made a change from most of the dribble you see nowadays coming out of Hollywood! At least someone tried and gave being different a go!

Personally I though it was a great film! And we'll worth a watch..

Criticism is some parts the acting was a bit off and was a bit "corny" more like a b movie..

Apart from that very enjoyable! And creepy!
