One Night Only

A theatrical troupe walks into town -- the train doesn't stop, because a cart blocks the engineer's view -- and attempt to put on a production of HAMLET with no leading lady, no costumes and no talent.

Director Charley Chase -- going as Charles Parrott, as he usually did when directing -- offers two or three good sight gags in this Bullseye comedy, but there isn't much here that hadn't been done before, often by the performers involved. Leo White is among them. You may recognize him from early Charles Chaplin, often playing a French aristocrat with a beard, top hat, and monocle. After that, his fame declined, although he worked for decades, usually in uncredited bits for almost 500 recorded movies. He died in 1948, age 65.
