Charming Tale about Talking to the Wall

'Love, Divided' tells the tale of Valentina, a young classical pianist gearing up for a high-profile audition. As she settles into her new apartment in the heart of Madrid, she quickly encounters her neighbor, David--a reclusive, grumpy, and socially awkward inventor who detests loud noises. David occupies the apartment immediately next to hers and hasn't left the building in over three years. Complicating matters further is the paper-thin wall separating their apartments; although they can't see each other, they can speak as if in the same room.

For obvious reasons, conflict and comedic situations ensue as our two leads initially can't stand each other due to their starkly different lifestyles. What's curious is that each neighbor is currently struggling with their own outside personal issues that eventually enter their living situation. Soon enough, Valentina and David begin to fall for each other, simply by candidly conversing through the wall and finding they have much in common--all without ever knowing what the other looks like.

If you're reading this thinking, 'This sounds like a completely stupid premise for a film,' I agree--yet somehow, it works. Although it follows the common rom-com trope of two people who initially can't stand each other, it avoids the typical plot contrivances and unrelatable characters that plague many modern films of the genre, which seem to be written exclusively to socially engineer unattainable expectations for real-life relationships. The two leads of this film are relatable and have undeniable chemistry together, with Valentina, played by Pop-Singer Aitana in her acting debut, being exceptionally charming and endearing.

Euro-films generally have more artistic photography than Hollywood films, and this film is no exception, as director Patricia Font makes good use of moving camera shots to convey the idea of a relationship that exists with a wall separating the characters.

My main criticism is that the characters' early decision to avoid meeting face-to-face feels slightly underdeveloped, even when addressed through dialogue. At times, I found myself thinking, 'It's just a movie; I'll go with it.' Additionally, I felt some of the characters' decisions made in the final moments of the film strained credulity, however, I can give it a pass because I understand the symbolism Font was going for.

Overall, this slightly saccharine rom-com is more light-hearted than outright comedic, yet it manages to be relatable and surprisingly entertaining. As someone who usually works from home and is a former musician, I found both characters relatable and well-performed by the actors. I usually don't like rom-coms; however, the plot of this particular film had such a sweet, simplistic innocence to it that I enjoyed it quite a bit. 7/10

(I watched this in the original Spanish-Audio and can't speak to the quality of the English-dub.)

An average comedy that made me chuckle a few times, but my neighbors couldn't hear me laughing through the walls.

In this film Aitana plays a girl called Valentina who thinks she's found a nice apartment to move into, but she soon finds out that she can hear everything her neighbor (David - Gullar Fernando) does in his apartment because the walls are very thin.

The film starts off funny because David wants complete silence for his scientific work but Valentina can't provide this because she is trying to be a professional pianist, so they start trying to make each other move out by creating as much noiseas possible. But this joke ends a bit stupidly when Valentina "ups her game" by just doing something small that's not really funny and probably wouldn't have bothered most people.

This joke lasts about 25 minutes and then are still some other jokes and they made me chuckle but not laugh out loud.

Another part that I found quite funny is when Valentina and David start to get to know each other but they decide that they shouldn't meet and should just get to know each other through the thin walls. So they both try to cook lasagna and David's turns out perfectly but Valentina's keeps getting worse and worse.

But overall this film has too much romance and not enough comedy so I probably won't watch it again. And even some of the romantic parts look silly, for example towards the end of the film, David and Valentina have a fight and David does something romantic to win her back but it just came across as more stupid than romantic. Although it might still be a fun movie to watch on a date night.

Simple, cute, and a little funny....

6.5/10 (Recommend)

This movie pretty much met the expectations I had for it. Based on the trailer and poster photo I felt it was going to be simple, cute, and a little endearing. I couldn't really ask for much more.

The chemistry of the actors was good and turned into adorable by the end. I do wish that perhaps they met sooner, and therefore things went differently at the concert hall, but you can't have two adorable moments so it does work out.

The story is nothing special, but is still endearing. The two meet as neighbours on a very rocky start and slowly develop a connection that becomes more true as time goes on. The music though a little repetitive works perfectly with all that is going on. It's the basis for the film to work.

The thing that irked me most is how the subtitles worked with the spoken word. I don't know Spanish, but I could make out enough that what was being said, and what was being translated, did not add up. Easy example would be, the spoken word is "Óscar", but the translation is "hi" or "hey". Others are full phrases that I can't remember off the top of my head, but would be out of synch or not seem to show up when the word was being said.

Overall, this is a very average film at 6/10. Nothing is special about it, but it will make you feel the love. Don't expect to cry or well up, but you'll feel the cute emotions if your heart will let you. It's also a little funny at times and that's why I liked it. I would definitely watch it again.

That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!

Cute movie

I've decided to watch this movie because i love romantic comedies and more importantly i'm learning Spanish. As i was trying to understand the language, the story didn't bother me. Actually this story had a great potential but seems like wasted. Bad acting and lack of chemistry is to blame, but not so terrible that makes you shut it in the middle. If you decide to wach it, don't take it so seriously and give it a go if you have nothing better to do, it's like a Hallmark movie more or less. But if you're after some fancy movie that you'd want to tell your friends about, you can just pass it. The story is actually funny.

It has aged elegantly...

She's a young pianist preparing for an audition. He is a game inventor who can only concentrate in complete silence. Separated by only a paper-thin wall in conjoined apartments, will they learn to live in harmony with one another? Will romance blossom through the wall?

At a time when humor was not common in western films, this one won me over. Even its soundtrack is delightfully funny, with a modern and contemporary aura... And the eternal magic of transforming criminals, murderers and thieves into national heroes, with a lot of sympathy and ''honesty''. The two handsome protagonists and the beautiful Kath Ross (enigmatic ending) have perfect chemistry, a lean script that doesn't let it get boring, everything is well produced, it has aged elegantly...

remake of the french film

Love divided. In spain, it's pared con pared, which roughly means wall to wall! Two neighbors in apartments with very thin walls drive each other crazy. She plays piano, and he is working on some loud, mechanical thing which makes a racket. They get on each other's nerves, and they still haven't even met face to face! Some humor. Mostly sight gags and pratfalls. I'm thinking the translation wasn't the greatest. Grammatically, it's fine, but it's sometimes quite stilted and serious. Will they ever meet? Can two people, each with their own issues, get together and have a normal relationship ? Directed by patricia font. The version on netflix usa has sound issues... goes loud then real quiet during the first half. According to imdb, it's a remake of the french film blind date. En françe, it's un peu beaucoup aveuglément, which means "a little too blindly". I've looked for the french version, but it doesn't seem to be available. It's okay.

Regarde l'original français

I stumbled upon the original French Version some years ago and despite its silly premise I found the chemistry and film a delightful watch. Cut to 2024 seeing a new version on Netflix I was interested...

This film remake is missing the magic of the first one which is odd because it's mostly the same. It's just is very lacking.

This version offered nothing new which what's the point of making the exact same movie again with in my opinion actors who just didn't have the same chemistry.

Really if this film looks interesting to you just find the French version it's so much better. I would have people to see this version first and miss out.

Poor acting + silly story.

Singers should be hired as singers not actors, and by doing so movies' quality will drastically improve. That being said and leaving the poor acting aside, the story, while pretty silly, is also kinda cute. And, actually, considering how poorly buildings are built I could even picture this happening in real life.

Photography is pretty simple, they could have done way better having a movie set in Madrid, which have a bunch of stunning spots.

Is it worth watching? That's completely up to you. I was expecting it to be bad and it didn't disappointed me but even being bad it's still easy to watch and therefore entertaining, somehow.

Wonderful music

8.0 stars.

A man and woman are neighbors and soon discover they can hear each other through the wall that separates their apartments. It's a challenge at first, they don't get along at all. As time goes by, they become friends, and maybe more than friends...but they've never met face to face. Weeks pass as they continue their relationship this way.

Yet another outlier for me. All the reviews are showing thumbs mostly down as far as I can tell. Maybe this movie doesn't float the boat for the majority, but I was absolutely enthralled. The dubbing is done to near perfection. The voices used are really good and fit the personalities of the players to a tee. The lead male is good at his role as a shut-in hermit type who has been that way since his fiance died a few years ago. The lead female's performance is equally as good, portraying a woman struggling with confidence issues and trying to get her life in order. She's an amazing pianist, and he's a toy inventor.

The music is magnificent, so watch this just for that alone.

I don't agree with the opinion that the performances misfire. Quite the opposite. Maybe the dubbing makes it better? I don't know, but I really like all the actors a lot. I can't figure out what makes this such an entertaining and heartfelt movie for me, but it is what it is. I enjoyed it.

Saw this the first time...

When it was called "Blind Date" and was a french movie. This is a rip off with poor acting and poor story.

The set up... is that there is a recluse who has lived for years in a cheap apartment - in part - because one of the walls has no insulation... eventually someone moves into the other apartment and though he tries to scare her off... she won't leave. So they form a truce and try to be quiet... but end up falling for each other.. but since the apartments are on the other side of the complex... they never meet and have no idea what the other is like. (and they refuse to tell each other because if they did the movie would be over.

Go rent the french version.. So much better.

fluffy then again can be read as deep

Communication these days and dating for the youngsters can start on screens so a wall is not so weird

The story here is really very sweet a kind of feel-good Romcom with the usual oh no we are making a mistake leading to denouement.

The 2 main actors are excellent. Not being Spanish or watching Spanish TV was not aware that the leading lady is a They've Got Talent type singer; she is good here also quite a beauty which will please all male viewers no doubt

The main male player is also very good as are all the ancillaries

The film is based on a 2015 French story and film Un po', tanto, ciecamente (2015) I will have a look at that one see what the differences are; but the Spanish one here stands on its own perfectly; and if you do not know it is a copy and paste it feels really original

Within the EU now you see many films being reworked to GER ITA SPA Fr etc wherever the original happened; it usually works fairly well. It does here.

Best romantic comedy I've seen since High Strung

Simple, lovely story with attractive actors that is beautifully filmed. The end even managed to make me cry with joy. For me, this movie is perfect.

I love how the main characters grow and change. This is a slow burn romance of "enemies" becoming friends then falling in love. I feel David's back story that explained his reasons for turning into a hermit was a surprise. I would have liked to see some clues that led up to it, so that as a viewer I could have processed the emotions better. The movie had a gentle pace and all of a sudden too many emotions were thrown into the mix too quickly. I would have also liked the last scene to last a minute longer.

I will happily rewatch this movie again.

PERFECTION

It is definitely a feel good movie. Went in with very little expectations ,came out feeling better about life for a moment ofcourse before reality ruined the moment for me. I am pretty sure i can rewatch this if it so happens that i dont have anything else at hand.

The setup of the homes was giving me homey ,familiarity and i felt cosy just watching it and it helped me out of a moment of sadness. The best friends are well written and the way the main characters handle conflict is mature and realistic ,not the fairy tale things that don't make sense. The builders and landlords should be arrested .It felt illegal to live in that apartment. It was more a ment than apart.
