I caught this recently at the LA Femme film festival, and it really exceeded my expectations. Just a warm, funny, well-put together movie. The actors are great, the story flows well, the plot makes sense. I was absorbed from the start and never lost interest. The two leads have a good romantic chemistry - you want them to end up together.
I also liked seeing a movie set in Topanga Canyon - sort of a magical place up in the Santa Monica Mountains near Malibu. Really beautiful little world, and kind of the perfect location for some modern witches to make a bit of magic. Great movie to curl up and watch with a glass of wine on a rainy day.

I liked this film's message about the importance of being brave enough to look inward while also being brave enough to reach out for connection to others, and how each act serves the other when done w the right intentions. A Beautiful film, both visually and spiritually!
Those of you who have seen other Jane Clark films will recognize her distinct "flavor", both visually and in "feeling" as well as her expansion as a film maker as she tried new things. The special effects are delightful and really bring the viewer into the "witchy and ghosty" experiences of the characters themselves. Enjoy this bewitching experience!

I saw this film last night and walked away utterly delighted and enchanted. It's a beautifully shot romantic comedy set in luscious Topanga Canyon, California, and features a terrific cast and an engaging storyline. Who doesn't love watching two people fall head over heels? Throw in a dose of magical mysticism and laugh out loud funny, and you've got a real winner in Witchy Ways. Candis Cayne sparkles as the witty BFF, stealing nearly ever scene she's in with her droll asides and expressive body language. The chemistry between the two leads is palpable - and hot. Writer/Director Jane Clark has created a wonderful film, and I hope you can see it, too.
For many of us, notions related to witchcraft and the supernatural frequently conjure up images of things scary, menacing, even evil. But those who freely engage in these practices are often frustrated by just how misunderstood their ways are perceived by others, gestures that are generally intended for beneficial purposes, especially when it comes to the processes of self-discovery and manifesting one's hopes and dreams. And one area in which those aims are particularly true is in the romance department, regardless of one's lifestyle or orientation. Such is the premise at work in writer-director Jane Clark's latest feature outing, the story of Eve (Diora Baird), a middle-aged, successful but lonely businesswoman who makes a pilgrimage to a secluded wilderness vacation home in California's Topanga Canyon, a journey whose purpose and outcome are mostly unclear, even to her. The journey is principally a tribute to her recently deceased mother who, for reasons largely unexplained, considered the warm and welcoming venue a personally meaningful refuge, an enigmatic sanctuary of sorts. Once there, however, the love-starved protagonist experiences a series of unusual, unexplained events, some mystical, some playful, some resonant and some unexpectedly romantic. Indeed, in short order, a budding relationship develops between the circumspect hermitic protagonist and her kindly neighbor, Danni (Marem Hassler), the owner of the property and an avowed, unabashed wiccan spiritualist. Their initially unlikely connection proves to be just what each other needs. But, as this emerging romance blossoms, they each must face issues from their respective pasts that they need to work through in order to move forward, challenging tasks that ultimately benefit from a little magic and a whole lot of warm and tender support. This delightfully different love story is a refreshing surprise in many respects, combining seemingly disparate narrative elements in a charming, revelatory and frequently humorous tale. In addition to lovingly presenting a passionate, heartwarming same-sex romance, the film provides viewers with a plainspoken, authentic, sincerely enlightening examination of philosophical and metaphysical topics that are often unfairly mischaracterized by blatantly erroneous and often-insulting misconceptions. Even though the picture is a tad slow to get started and can at times become a little too talky, it nevertheless pays off handsomely in the end, growing progressively stronger and more engaging as the film unfolds, all without ever becoming schmaltzy or coming across like an overwrought, saccharin-encrusted Hallmark Channel movie. "Witchy Ways" is truly an enchanting work of LGBTQ+ cinema that works its magic wonderfully, an offering that just might cast a spell over you.
The only things I knew for sure when I arrived at the theater were that the leads were two stunning women, the film was made by a woman, and there was going to be some magic and witchery along the way. Already a great start.
Well, turns out it has so much I love in a movie, all wrapped up in a beautiful, funny, supernatural, sexy, rom-com.
Stories of family. The regrets and guilt carried when a loved one is gone too soon and we know we let them down... and the road to healing. Stories of opening your heart. Letting someone in at the most vulnerable time in your life. Learning it's okay not to carry the weight of the world on your own. Stories of love. The magic of discovering there is someone who is actually there for you... and it turns out they are the one. Your one.
It gives us all hope. It gave me hope.
And I'll tell you what, I walked out of the theater feeling a shift. A witchy magical shift. I still feel it.
