- Title Card: Paris, France. June 3. First infection of VM2 virus appears. June 9. 83 percent of the European population is infected. June 14. VM2 spreads to Japan. Government collapses within 3 days. June 23. VM2 appears in Guthrie Center, Iowa. June 25. VM2 spreads unchecked across the U.S. June 26. The army destroys transportation arteries to contain the infected. June 27. EMPs detonated. All electronics disabled in final effort to isolate plague carriers. Six months later.
- Billy: What about using flamethrowers?
- Mack: Okay, so you're fighting a zombie and you hit it with a flamethrower. Now what?
- Billy: Now it's dead.
- Julien: Now you're being attacked by a *flaming* zombie. Burners as we call the trade.
- Billy: Well, yeah, but eventually...
- Henry: Severe head trauma removes the need for 'eventually'.
- Billy: More record keeping?
- Julien: [writing in his journal] Yep.
- Billy: Who do you think is going to read that?
- Julien: Well, on a good day, I think it'll be my kids, which I currently have none by the way.
- Ramona: And on a bad day?
- Julien: I figure it'd be the guy who finds my body.
- Ramona: It's awful.
- Julien: At least there'd be somebody left to *find* my body, right?
- Julien: They were waiting for us inside.
- Mack: There's no way, no way they were waiting.
- Julien: Yes, I'm telling you, alright? They were hiding, it was an ambush, we're lucky *any* of us got out!
- Cassie: Zombies don't hide, Julien.
- Ramona: Who cares if they were hiding?
- Mack: She's right, we just need to get out of here.
- Julien: I just had a question.
- Brockton: Okay.
- Julien: We've been following your arrows for weeks now.
- Brockton: And?
- Julien: Why bows?
- Brockton: Bows are a great weapon, they're silent, everybody that raids the sporting good stores goes for the bullets, nobody even touches the arrows.
- Julien: Because most people don't know how to shoot bows.
- Sara: We're part of the Quincy Archery Team, that's Coach Sinclair.
- Julien: Oh, alright.
- Julien: You wanna know why I'm going to Catalina? 1. No zombies. 2. No zombies. And 3. I want to take a shower, I want a toilet that flushes, I want water, hot water that comes out of a tap that you don't have to put on a pot and boil over a fire. And I want the hot water to take a bath after I take a shower, preferably with a girl.
- Mack: I don't want too much, just a small house, a garden, Judith and I used to grow tomatoes, I'd like to do that again.
- Henry: [playing with Cassie's hair] Me... I miss my horse.
- Mack: Damn man, that must be one big horse.
- Ramona: Me, I just want to be anywhere but here. I don't want to die like Billy and Kevin.
- Ramona: Okay look, we don't really know what's going on. We had this radio and it died, and we couldn't get Kevin's truck started.
- Mack: Those were the EMPs, they're like high altitude nukes, they took out all electronics, cars, planes, trains, everything. They were supposed to contain the plague carriers.
- Billy: Yeah well that didn't work out so well. Oh man.
- Mack: Cities keep burning, and there's nothing we can do about it.
- Henry: You'll get used to it.
- Cassie: Look, I'm sorry about before. It's just that if we'd gotten there sooner, I might've been able to save him.
- Ramona: No, it wasn't your fault. It happened really quickly.
- Cassie: Yeah, it always does, that's why we never go anywhere alone, ever, not even to pee, alright?
- Ramona: You trying to tell me that those guys have always been...
- Cassie: Yep.
- Ramona: That's awkward.
- Cassie: Better than a zom catching you with your pants down.
- [squats down behind a tree]
- Cassie: Uh, I'm a little shy.
- Ramona: [turns around] Oh, sorry, my bad. No rush.
- Ramona: So Cassie, weren't you saying you had a husband?
- Cassie: [pause] Yeah, Stew, Stewie. Officially acting Surgeon General Stewart Anderson, at least as of two weeks into the crisis. They were running low on doctors and he volunteered, he went with the interim government and I stayed to get my brother Jake. We were gonna get the next wave of flights out to Catalina.
- Ramona: Well what happened?
- Henry: Uh, let's talk about this another time.
- Cassie: There were *no* other flights, uh, so I found Jake and headed west. Met up with Julien a day later.
- Julien: I was stuck behind a soda machine at an S-Mart, imagine that.
- Henry: [laughs] Yeah, I *can* imagine that.
- Cassie: And Mack saved all our asses outside of Pittsburgh.
- Mack: I don't know how much saving I did.
- Julien: Oh, I do.
- Cassie: Got the big guy in Ohio.
- Julien: Surrounded by and I kid you not, over 100 crushed zombies and he's looking for more.
- Henry: They killed my horse, I was pissed off. Now you can mess with me, but not my horse.
- Billy: [raiding a sporting good store] Should we look for food?
- Julien: Why? We got all the food in the world. Literally.
- Mack: Yeah, we need some sturdy boots for you, something to cover your arms and legs.
- Julien: Yeah, look for something made out of hard plastic.
- Mack: Yeah, none of that soft stuff, zombies can chew right through that.
- Julien: Yeah, make sure it's kind of light. The heavier it is, the more you sweat.
- Cassie: Dammit!
- Mack: What?
- Cassie: I lost my brush.
- Mack: We'll get you another brush.
- Cassie: No, Mack, I don't want another brush, I want *my* things!
- Mack: When we get to Catalina...
- Cassie: What if we don't? What if they're all dead? What if there is no one there? This is crazy man, we are *all* going to die getting to Catalina.
- Julien: I don't plan on dying.
- Cassie: And no one ever does, Julien.
- Mack: You're just tired.
- Cassie: Yeah you're right, I'm tired of all this.
- Henry: What's the matter?
- Cassie: I'm just tired, Henry.
- Henry: It's gonna be okay.
