Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (2014) Ending Explained
Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar (2014)
Interstellar Explained

Hoping that by now you would have seen Christopher Nolan’s space film, Interstellar, starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Michael Caine. I have tried to dissect and explain the ending of Interstellar in a lucid manner from my understanding. I will not get into nuances of science about the Wormholes and Black Holes so you can study them separately here. Christopher Nolan himself stated,” People are always accusing my films of having plot holes, and I’m very aware of the plot holes in my films and very aware of when people spot them, but they generally don’t. But what were some science issues people had with the film? That was Kip’s domain.” I also want to add that this is a science Fiction movie, not a documentary on space that could have an accuracy of a cent percentage.

Interstellar is a big-budget science fiction...

How a Team of Women Battled Sexism and Deadly Elements to Summit Denali
Image
In 1970, Alaskan mountaineer and doctor Grace Hoeman led the first all-women’s attempt to summit Denali — which was, in fact, the first all-female attempt at any of the world’s big peaks.

By then, we had sent men to the moon, and women still hadn’t stood on the highest points on Earth. Popular belief held that they were incapable of withstanding high altitudes, savage elements, and carrying heavy loads up storm-ravaged slopes. Which made Hoeman’s idea all the more audacious.

Everyone told Hoeman and her six-woman team that it couldn’t be done.

Glen Powell Starred in This Short-Lived 'Survivor' Series for Kids
Image
You may know Glen Powell as Hollywood's new "it" boy, starring in blockbuster films like Twisters and Anyone But You. Although the actor has really made a name for himself as a Hollywood heartthrob, you'd never guess where we've seen Powell on our screens before. The Texas native appeared on one episode of a reality competition show called Endurance when he was 13 - and he didn't seem to be happy that his reality TV past was out. Sure, he chases twisters and all, but he never seemed like the "survivor" type.

Endurance Review: A Polar Epic of Human Survival
Image
“Endurance” is an interesting video that tells the story of two amazing trips to Antarctica that happened more than one hundred years apart. At its core, the movie tells the story of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s famous 1914 expedition, a scary tale of survival that has caught people’s imaginations for generations. It compares it to the mission in 2022 to find the wreckage of his ship.

The documentary “Free Solo” was directed by the renowned team of Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, Jimmy Chin, and Natalie Hewit. The film is an interesting look at how people can be strong and how technology can change things. These directors are known for making movies that push the limits of what people can endure, and “Endurance” continues this powerful story of history.

The documentary cleverly mixes old footage from the original trip, which has been amazingly preserved and is now digitally colorized, with scenes from the...

‘Endurance’ Review: Ernest Shackleton’s 1914 Voyage to the Icy Bottom of the Earth Comes to Life in a You-Are-There Documentary
Image
The fabled expedition of Ernest Shackleton, the Anglo-Irish explorer who led 27 men on a voyage to Antarctica in 1914 aboard the three-masted barquentine schooner Endurance, only to see his ship sink and to spend the next 500 days trying to survive and get back to civilization, sounds like something you read about in history books — or maybe a storybook. It’s a saga so removed from our time, so rooted in a pre-technological world, that the idea that you could actually see it as it’s happening seems wondrous.

Yet Shackleton, who had an early 20th-century showman’s flair for publicity, took a filmmaker along with him as part of the crew — the photographer and cinematographer Frank Hurley, who shot the whole journey. So even as Shackleton and his men were stranded at the bottom of the earth, trapped in an endless stretching expanse of pack ice, their daily routines, their research,...

What Ernest Shackleton's Photographer Frank Hurley Did After The Endurance's Antarctic Expedition
Image
Disney's documentary Endurance celebrates the remarkable achievement of Sir Ernest Shackleton, the British explorer who, in 1914, attempted the first trans-antarctic crossing, only to fall foul of brutal weather and ice. Shackleton's ship, Endurance, was lost in the effort, but the Englishman's great achievement was saving the lives of all 27 Endurance crew members despite a treacherous 800-mile trek across sea and snow. Among that crew was the Australian photographer and cinematographer Frank Hurley, who was contracted to produce moving and still images to celebrate and commemorate the adventure.

Hurley was a safe bet for Shackleton, having already worked in the Antarctic on Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition in 1911, spending three years in the icy wilderness. Hurley produced a documentary about that experience, Home of the Blizzard. At 29 years of age, Hurley had the credentials to fulfill Shackleton's public relations vision, which the ex-magazine journalist realized was the lifeblood of a cash-hungry expedition.

Ernest Shackleton's Two Antarctic Expeditions Before The Endurance Explained
Image
National Geographic's new documentary on Disney+, Endurance, displays the search for the remains of the famed explorer, Ernest Shackleton's lost ship and offers insight into his involvement in two previous expeditions across Antarctica. The documentary follows the expedition of archaeologist, Mensun Bound, as he and his crew search for the remains of Shackleton's vessel Endurance, which sank to the bottom of the Weddell Sea in 1915. Endurance follows the crew's determination to locate the ship while also depicting the trials that Shackleton and his Endurance crew were forced to endure in the Antarctic in order to survive more than 100 years ago.

The documentary shows how Endurance became stuck in the ice and eventually sank in 1915. Shackleton and his crew survived 589 days, traveling 800 miles across the Antarctic to South Georgia before they were finally rescued in 1916. After Shackleton's experience with the Endurance, he served in the British Army and continued...

How Many People Survived The Endurance Sinking
Image
National Geography's engrossing new documentary on Disney+, Endurance, tracks the 2022 Antarctic expedition led by celebrated maritime archaeologist Mensun Bound. The expedition, aboard the Agulhas II, is trying to locate the shipwrecked Endurance, the vessel abandoned by Captain Ernest Shackleton and his crew in October 2015. Shackleton had set out in November 1914 to reclaim Britain's reputation as the world's greatest explorer, after the Norwegian Roald Amundsen had beaten British hero Captain Scott to the South Pole in 1911. Undeterred, Shackleton insisted a bigger prize would be had by crossing Antarctica from sea to sea, via the pole.

As made clear by the documentary, the subsequent Imperial Trans-Atlantic Expedition failed, even if all 27 of Shackleton's crew miraculously survived the ordeal. Endurance relates how the ship became trapped by pack ice in the Wendell Sea, eventually succumbing to the brutal elements and sinking in November 1915. The crew camped on the ice for months, before hauling...

What Happened To Ernest Shackleton After The Endurance
Image
Disney's new documentary, The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition, follows celebrated maritime archaeologist Mensun Bound's 2022 expedition to locate the Endurance, the ship that Ernest Shackleton and his 27 crewmen had left at the bottom of the Antarctic's Weddell Sea in November 1915. The film intersperses the trials and tribulations of Bound's new explorers in finding the ship, with the hardships of Shackleton's men 100 years previously as they attempted a hitherto virgin transatlantic crossing in the best traditions of British exploration, which had been hit hard in 1911 when Norwegian Roald Amundsen beat Captain Robert Scott to the South Pole.

Shackleton had joined Scott on his 1901 Discovery expedition, which was ultimately abandoned with Scott being invalided back to the UK, suffering from snow blindness, frostbite, and scurvy. There was some conjecture that Scott and Shackleton's relationship had broken down on the trip, and Scott wrote that he felt Shackleton's days as an explorer...

How Long The Endurance Crew Was Stranded In Antarctica
Image
National Geographic's new Endurance documentary portrays the incredible journey the ship's crew underwent when they became stranded in Antarctica. The documentary recounts the chilling expedition while juxtaposed beside the S.A. Agulhas II's crew as they attempt to find the remains of the Endurance. The journey began on December 5, 1914, as Ernest Shackleton, Captain Frank Worsley, and 26 other men sailed from the island of South Georgia on an expedition to Antarctica. However, within the first two months, the Endurance ship fell victim to the ice guarding the continent, eventually leading to it sinking.

Ernest Shackleton and his men had to abandon the ship while saving as many provisions as possible, leaving them stranded on Antarctica's ice. The Endurance crew survived for a long time as they traveled the waters on a sheet of ice. Eventually, the crew reached Elephant Island, which allowed Shackleton and a few men to use the lifeboat they had saved,...

‘Endurance’ Explorers and Filmmakers on Capturing the Shipwreck’s ‘Holy Grail’ Discovery, Recreating Ernest Shackleton’s Voice With AI and Restoring Century-Old Footage
Image
When the crew aboard the S.A. Agulhas II set out in early 2022 to search for the Endurance shipwreck, it seemed nearly impossible.

“It’s the holy grail,” Nico Vincent, the sub-sea manager on the expedition, tells Variety. “It’s the most complicated one. Just being able to reach the field and dive three kilometers beneath the ice, it’s the level of complexity of walking on the moon.”

The Endurance, commanded by explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton on an expedition to traverse Antarctica from one coast to another, sank in the Weddell Sea in November 1915 as its 27-member crew looked on. Over the next 308 days, the men faced starvation and frostbite as Shackleton recruited five crew members to make the treacherous journey in a lifeboat to seek help on the South Atlantic island of South Georgia. Miraculously, when Shackleton returned to save the remaining men, he found all of them still alive.

The ‘Endurance’ Filmmakers on Bringing Ernest Shackleton Back From the Dead With AI
Image
Married filmmakers Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi specialize in stories about human tenacity against the forces of nature, putting them out at the indefatigable pace of about a film a year — a feat of endurance in itself.

Filmmakers Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin hosted a friends and family screening of their National Geographic film Endurance in October in Manhattan.

Chin and Vasarhelyi have chronicled vertiginous, record-setting ascents in Meru and the Academy Award–winning documentary Free Solo; the daring mission to save the junior soccer team stranded in Thailand’s Tham Luang Nang Non cave system in The Rescue; and Diana Nyad’s real-life 110 mile swim from Cuba to Florida in last year’s Oscar-nominated scripted feature Nyad. And then there are Chin’s own death-defying expeditions, including his latest summiting of Everest in which his party happened to make a momentous discovery. (More on that below.)

Across the River and Into the Trees (Paula Ortiz)

Hemingway’s work across novels and short stories has been adapted for film countless times over, yet Across the River and Into the Trees has never properly been rendered onscreen. Until now. Written by Peter Flannery and directed by Paula Ortiz, here is a handsome film that is decidedly modest in its endeavor. The best thing going for it is Liev Schreiber as Colonel Richard Cantwell, the lead of the picture. Schreiber is one of those actors who has somehow always been underrated, despite being capable of playing nearly any kind of part. A kind boyfriend thrust into an impossible familial situation (The Daytrippers)? Check. Tough-but-fractured fixer living on the edge (Ray Donovan)? Check.

‘Endurance’ Shipwreck Doc Bosses on Finally Telling ‘the Greatest Survival Story Ever Told’
Image
When you think of famous 20th century shipwrecks, 1912’s Titanic is usually top of mind. But don’t overlook the incredible story of the exploration ship Endurance, which sank three and a half years later in Antarctica, and offers a mind-blowing survival epic. It gets its due in Endurance, a gripping film directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin (Free Solo) and Natalie Hewit. The story charts two narratives — one re-creating the past, the other documenting more recent developments. In 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton aimed to be the first to cross Antarctica’s icy terrain, setting sail from England with a crew of 27 men. During the voyage, the Endurance got trapped in pack ice for months. After, the sailors were forced to abandon ship, and it eventually sank in 1915. They ate penguins, seals and boiled seaweed. Four attempted rescue missions later, the full crew was saved. In 2022, an expedition team...

Glen Powell Got His TV Start on a Survivor Style Show Called Endurance

Quick Links Glen Powell Was on Endurance Before Becoming an A-Lister The Difficulties of Filming Endurance With a Teenage Cast

Glen Powell is having a moment right now. It's a Glenaissance, if you will. The bankable leading man has seen massive recent success with movies like Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone But You, Twisters, and 2025's The Running Man. While he's most known for those film roles today, Powell's small screen debut came in an unlikely place.

Powell is mostly known for his TV guest spots, with his first leading role coming up in Hulu's Chad Powers next year. But Powell's first TV credit was not for anything scripted. Instead, he was a contestant on the Discovery Kids show Endurance. Described as a Survivor-style show for teens, this series enjoyed an impressive six-season run from 2002 to 2008. It wasn't exactly Powell's big break, as his time on the show was rather limited.

All3Media CEO Jane Turton Discusses What Drove RedBird Imi in Its $1.45 Billion Purchase of TV Giant: ‘Opportunity for Growth,’ Scale and Portfolio
Image
In one of the most anticipated keynotes held at the 40th edition of Mipcom in Cannes, All3Media CEO Jane Turton discussed what drove Jeff Zucker and Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Imi in its $1.45 billion purchase of the TV production powerhouse behind “The Traitors.”

“I think it’s definitely the IP. People want to see growth,” Turton said at a fireside conversation with Variety’s co-editor-in-chief Cynthia Littleton at Mipcom in Cannes on Oct. 21. “They want to see something that’s been consistently growing, that the management team understands margins and all of those things. And then I think the range, the scale, the portfolio, that breadth, it was appealing.”

Turton suggested RedBird Imi also saw an “opportunity for growth” with All3Media. “Because if you think about it, you don’t buy something to watch it plateau or worse…”

The executive, who became CEO of All3Media in 2015 and grew...

Free Solo and Endurance Directors Reveal Their Next Documentary Project
Image
Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vaserhelyi are the powerhouse husband and wife duo behind some of the most inspiring and sweat-inducing documentaries of recent years. Across their careers, the pair have recounted the story of Alex Honnold, the first person to climb El Capitan in Yosemite National Park without any ropes (Free Solo), chronicled the heroic rescue of the trapped Thai soccer team in 2018 (The Rescue), and, most recently, restored the original footage from Ernest Shackleton's phenomenal journey to Antarctica in the early 20th Century, and followed the team who discovered his ship over a century later (Endurance). Notoriously hard workers, the pair have already found their next project, and it sounds like a nail-biter.

Speaking to MovieWeb to promote Endurance, Elizabeth Chai Vaserhelyi revealed the pair's next project. Vaserhelyi teased:

"We're very much enjoying [working on]- are you familiar with the story of the place that crashed in the Amazon with the family?...

Interstellar 2 Likely Isn't Happening But This Christopher Nolan Movie Deserves A Sequel First
Image
Like many Christopher Nolan movies, Interstellar has bred a dedicated fanbase who consider it not only the best movie of his filmography but one of the best movies period. So, of course, the idea of Interstellar 2 would please a large portion of moviegoers. Too bad for them, Nolan rarely does sequels. Except for that one time when he did it twice and may have accidentally ignited an eternity of superhero movies. But for the most part, Nolan's filmography is filled with movies that finish their stories at the end of the runtime and leave little room for sequels.

His ideas are so massive and his visuals so spectacular that for something like Oppenheimer or Tenet to finish with a hint there's more to tell would almost be a disservice to the film that came before it. I don't want to sit through 3 hours of terror and tension on the...

Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi Defends AI Use in New Documentary Endurance
Image
Endurance, the new documentary by Free Solo filmmakers Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, uses AI to bring Ernest Shackleton's diary entries to life through the explorer's own voice a creative decision which the pair staunchly defend despite the controversies surrounding the technology. Artificial Intelligence is becoming an increasingly hot topic for conversation in the film and TV industries, as creatives fight against the exploitative use of the tech, while studios are eager to embrace the tool for its cost-effectiveness. Some recent movies and shows, including Civil War, Late Night With the Devil, and Secret Invasion, have come under fire for using generative AI (which steals from other artists to "create" new images).

However, Endurance's use of AI feels more considered and respectful, something which Chin and Vasarhelyi were eager to get right during post-production. During an interview with MovieWeb, Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi discussed their...

‘Endurance’ Review: A Wildly Uneven, AI-Assisted Account of Two Antarctic Expeditions
Image
In their latest film, Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi continue to pursue their fascination with the lengths to which a human body can be pushed, and the strength of spirit required to push it there. After following up their Oscar-winning documentary Free Solo with a dip into the untested waters of narrative filmmaking in Nyad, they’ve returned to the nonfiction realm to tell the dual story of Ernest Shackleton’s 1914 Antarctic expedition and the quest, over 100 years later, to locate the wreckage from the voyage. But while Endurance continues the thematic through line of Chin and Vasarhelyi’s previous films, and while some of the photography is as impressive as the stomach-churning cliffs of Free Solo, it never manages to delve into the deeper psychological layers that made that film so compelling.

Directed by Chin and Vasarhelyi along with Natalie Hewit, Endurance moves back and forth between the two voyages throughout its runtime.

The film has been inspired by a National Geographic expedition to the Himalayas led by Chin that last month discovered Irvine’s boot, sock and severed foot on a glacier beneath Everest. This follows on from the discovery of Mallory’s remains in 1999.

Image
National Geographic has revealed the official trailer for Endurance, which was directed by Chai Vasarhelyi, Jimmy Chin, and Natalie Hewit. The documentary will begin streaming on Disney+ and Hulu on November 2, 2024.

In a legendary feat of leadership and perseverance, polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton kept alive his crew of 27 men for over a year despite the loss of their ship in frigid pack ice. Over a century later, a team of modern-day explorers sets out to find the sunken ship.

From National Geographic Documentary Films, Endurance tells the inspiring stories of these two landmark expeditions, bound by their shared grit and determination.

In 1914, Anglo-Irish Merchant Navy officer and veteran explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton commanded an expedition to sail to Antarctica. His mission was to be the first to traverse the vast continent from one coast to another: a distance of 1,800 miles across the most difficult terrain on the planet.

Chai Vasarhelyi & Jimmy Chin. However, they seem to be attached to have their names onboard, as it is also co-directed by the British doc filmmaker Natalie Hewit. In a legendary feat of leadership and perseverance, iconic polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton kept his crew of 27 men alive for over a year despite the loss of their ship in frigid pack ice. London Film Festival Head Kristy Matheson On Landing ‘Blitz’, Launching Video Games Strand & Embracing Experimental Works: “We Have A Very Cinema-Literate Audience”
Image
With titles like Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich’s The Ballad of Suzanne Césaire and Mati Diop’s Dahomey, London Film Festival head Kristy Matheson, in her second year at the helm, inches further toward what appears to be an interesting strategic shift at the Lff: a full-scale embrace of the avant-garde.

Alongside Hunt-Ehrlich and Diop, experimental and deeply contemporary filmmakers such as Wang Bing, Payal Kapadia and Tsai Ming-liang feature throughout this year’s Lff lineup. The experimental mix-up, Matheson told us ahead of Wednesday night’s opening, is thanks to the enthusiasm of London’s “very cinema-literate audience.”

“There are so many amazing cinemas all across the city screening great work all year round. And that’s our core audience,” she said.

Opening the festival on Wednesday is Blitz, the latest feature-length project from Turner Prize- and Oscar-winning filmmaker Steve McQueen. Other headline titles set for the festival include Luca Guadagnino’s Queer,...

Ernest Shackleton’s “Stunning” Footage Comes to Life 110 Years Later With Nat Geo’s ‘Endurance’
Image
“Not all shipwrecked treasure glitters. Some’s frozen where nobody dares to look.”

A twinkle in his eye, marine archaeologist Mensun Bound is looking back on an adventurous career exploring waters from the Mediterranean to the South China Sea. Sun, scuba and shining treasure. The Indiana Jones of the deep.

In 2022, Bound embarked on his most high-profile mission yet, a search — his second — for the wreck of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s fabled ship, Endurance. Aboard the icebreaker S.A. Agulhas II, Bound headed to Antarctica’s Weddell Sea in hopes of locating the three-masted vessel, crushed in the pack ice in 1915. With historian Dan Snow on board to follow the endeavor, failure would be expensive and embarrassing.

Now, National Geographic Documentary Films is presenting the story of Shackleton’s epic of survival, and the search expedition a century later, in a knife-edged deep-sea horror. Endurance is directed and produced by...

“It was the worst feeling”: Glen Powell Lost in ‘Endurance’ but Won in Life, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Was Not the First Time ‘Top Gun 2’ Star Caught Our Attention on Screen
Image
Glen Powell has undeniably conquered Hollywood with his iconic roles in films such as Top Gun: Maverick and Twisters. Still, he had a humble beginning that many fans are probably unaware of. Before he became the nation’s newest heartthrob, he used to be a contestant in a teen reality show.

Credits: Glen Powell in Top Gun: Maverick / Paramount Pictures

Fans may simply have forgotten that this Texas native starred in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, or perhaps they didn’t catch that one scene with him because he played a random stockbroker who got his head smashed by Bane. This was way back in 2012.

Glen Powell Joined A Reality Show That Immediately Got Him Kicked Out

In 2003, actor Glen Powell joined the second season of Endurance, a reality television show somewhat similar to Survivor but with a teenage cast. The players will live in a remote location...

Big Brother 26 recap: Jankie World, eviction targets, punishments, and a new Hoh
Big Brother 26 returned Sunday night with the first post-Quinn episode.

Quinn Martin became the first BB26 jury member on the previous episode, ending his quest to go from super fan to Big Brother winner.

Quinn didn’t even get to meet host Julie Chen Moonves, as she was out for the night, and Jerry O’Connell had stepped in.

The final eight houseguests carried on, playing a Head of Household Competition that same evening (September 12).

Now, CBS viewers got to catch up with the houseguests, and some surprises were in store for the new episode.

As a reminder, Ainsley (the artificial intelligence) joined Julie on a vacation.

Big Brother 26, Episode 27 recap

New Diary Room sessions opened up the September 15 episode of Big Brother 26.

Chelsie Baham spoke about really liking Quinn and feeling he needed to be evicted.

Leah Peters said she felt targeted, especially since her alliance members were getting...

Big Brother 26 spoilers: Veto results from a messy week
Julie Chen Moonves in Grande Fratello (2000)
Big Brother 26 spoilers reveal who won the Power of Veto this week.

We are in Week 9 of the Big Brother season, fresh off Quinn Martin getting sent to the jury house.

The hamsters competed in an Endurance Challenge after Quinn’s eviction, causing a shift in the power structure.

But that’s not all.

The eight remaining houseguests are living in the backyard. The new Artificial Intelligence twist has left them all getting punished.

Ainsley went on a trip with Julie Chen Moonves, leaving Janky/Jankie as the replacement AI. And yes, the name is a pun.

Big Brother 26 spoilers from the Live Feeds

Leah Peters won the Endurance Challenge. She is the new Head of Household and finally has some power.

But since they live outdoors now, Leah doesn’t get an Hoh Room. That’s a pretty harsh move by the producers.

Leah nominated Kimo Apaka and Rubina Bernabe for eviction.
