When Billy the Kid (Liam Hemsworth), the newest member of the elite mercenary team known as the Expendables, is brutally killed by ruthless rival mercenary Jean Vilain (Jean-Claude Van Damme) while on a supposedly simple mission to retrieve the contents of a safe from a downed airplane in Albania, the rest of the team—leader Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), knife specialist Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), weapons specialist Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), demolitionist Toll Road (Randy Couture), and sniper Gunner Jensen (Dolph Lundgren)—vow revenge on Vilain, not knowing that he is also after the safe's contents.
The Expendables 2 is the second movie in the Expendables franchise, a series of tribute movies to action films and actors from the 1980s and '90s. The screenplay was written by principle actor Sylvester Stallone and screenwriter Richard Wenk. It followed I mercenari - The Expendables (2010) and was followed by I mercenari 3 (2014). I mercen4ri - Expendables (2023) is "in development".
