Generic and predictable...

For an action movie then this was as predictable as they come. Yep, it is one of those movies where an underdog receives a short period of training in martial arts, then rises to the occasion and wins despite impossible odds against many other well-trained combatants.

Story-wise then "Never Back Down 2: The Beatdown" was rather generic and similar to many other similar movies before it. Actually it was almost a frame-by-frame copy of the first movie.

What makes the movie somewhat worthy watching is the fight during the actual Beatdown event, but it doesn't take place before well over an hour into the movie. The rest of the movie was just, sorry to say, a rather mundane story.

As for the acting, well I will say that it was adequate for the particular genre that it is. Just don't get your hopes up for academy award winning performances.

This sequel is a blatant and unnecessary remake of the first "Never Back Down" movie, to the point where it was embarrassing to bear witness to. It wasn't a continuation or anything, and sure it was with other characters, but the plot and storyline was a copy and paste job that was made so hastily.

"Never Back Down 2: The Beatdown" is a mediocre action movie experience, although it does show some impressive fighting skills from Michael Jai White. It might be worth a watch if you enjoy fighting movies that is driven by the action and a solid storyline is left far behind in its wake.

middle of the road....

hot chick or 2, fights were OK but not as good as the first film except for the fight where Michael Jai White is hand cuffed and fights off 4 or 5 police men showing his agility. there was some character development but not much, clumsy dialogue - not a lot of complete or realistic conversations, mildly entertaining though i wouldn't watch it twice like you can with some classic martial arts films. Some big plot holes like how a teenage boxer became a mix martial arts fighter with only a few weeks training....... hopefully kids out there don't think that's realistic! they all looked a bit young for MMA - kind of boyband MMA haha

the faults aside it was likable and i was entertained!

MMA fights, combined with the typical "step-up" "you got served" kind of storyline.

Teenage Karate Tiger 2

The first "Never Back Down" was a MTV inspired version of "Karate Tiger meets Beverly Hills 90210" with a lot of good looking kids (Amber Heard being one of them), some nice fight and training sequences and tons of bad acting and a cheesy script. Never Back Down 2 offers more of the same. Instead of suffering trough the "emotional journey" of one character, the focus is on 4 of them, everyone's motivations and storyline being a thin as the piece of paper, that one characters is hitting for 80 minutes (don't ask, watch it and you'll know). However the fights and training montages are great (especially the sequences with MJW, moving impressively fluid for a guy of his size, and the rad capoeira dances of Meraz) and MJW is as charismatic as ever in this underwritten role as a mentor with a troubled past. Overall the movie is enjoyable if you're not expecting too much and are a fan of MMA-related movies or of cheesy, "so bad that it's fun" 80's karate flicks.

Unspectacular but enjoyable mixed martial arts action movie

I was a huge fan of the original "Never Back Down", therefore was looking forward to seeing this follow-up.

In terms of the plot, it is painfully similar to the original, however this is not necessarily a bad thing, as, surprisingly, the same, predictable story line is still entertaining second-time-round. In addition to this, the characters are very similar to those in the first film in many respects, just with a few fresh ideas being introduced.

The action itself is strong; combat is well-acted and every fight scene is relatively convincing, therefore the film succeeds in, arguably, its key area.

In addition to this, Jai White is brilliant and after being impressed by his performance in "Blood and Bone", I was pleasantly surprised to see that his ability has not halted. Furthermore, despite being unsure about his ability as a director, I was equally impressed.

Overall, fans of the original who desire a similar dose of mixed martial arts action, or those who want an enjoyable, solid, MMA-based drama and are not concerned about a lack of depth or originality, should probably give this movie a try, however I'd advise watching the original first, as it is undoubtedly superior.

Bad Movie!

Much like the first movie this revolves around a bunch of guys trying to prove themselves, but unlike the first this is multi-starrer. But all the expectations can be kicked out within a few minutes into the movie. Bad acting by all of them (except for Michael White),no proper background to the characters, the characters aren't developed enough, lack of emotion and a few other traits add up to a very disappointing watch. You feel like you are just sitting there seeing a bunch of characters in scene after scene just stringed together. In some particular instances the movie makes no sense what so ever. The first movie was filled with emotions creating a reason for Jake Tyler(Sean Farris) to fight his way into the beatdown, but here it just a group of guys swearing at an alarming rate fighting each other. There are a few saving graces though, like the training sessions where you can see some insane work-out methods. All in all an average movie.

Not an emotional one, and not trying to be.

Just an action movie, without trying to be melodramatic. Yes, it's about 5 guys (including the mentor) with personal problems that seek the answer in training and fighting. There's not much background on the characters - but it's not necessarily bad. Sometimes the director is forcefully trying to make us like some character by making him/her an orphan, or raised by only one parent, or evil step parents, and also having an ill sibling, and no money of course. Did I mention that other kids/people trying to step on them, beat them, or kill them perhaps ?

There is no much character development in the movie, maybe except of Justin, but there is character portrayal. It's not hard to understand what kind of person each (and here I think that Michael Jay White did a great job). They all have got problems, but it's not like their world is collapsing on them. At least their not showing it to us - and I think that's good, since the fighter in them becomes more believable that way.

I agree that the acting is slightly wooden. And it's irritating at first, though I did get accustomed to it. Surprisingly, it's not full of clichés (though there are some), and the dialogs are not stupid, because the characters don't say obvious things.

The fighting is satisfying enough. After all, this is the reason I've watched that movie.

I certainly disagree with those saying first Never Back Down was better. This movie has almost no plot, but the first one was just stupid. The director of the original tried to make me like Jack Tyler by the usual trick - making him miserable but struggling. And Cam Giganet's character is barely watchable. He's just not acting like a fighter. The other fighters look more like a clowns. Fight choreography in the original is nowhere near this one. And all unnecessary shots from smart-phone make me ask the question, why watching the first Never Back Down movie ?? For the action - it's not worth it. The drama - not interesting and nothing new.

Incredibly bad

Pretty basic fight-movie, i.e. craptacular. Plot is meaningless and unoriginal. Direction is paint-by-numbers. Performances are all over the place.

Avoid.

odd movies make for hard reviews

First thing this reviewer has to say is that in my other reviews I have been very clear that Jai White has taken a bum steer from Hollywood, he is a much better action figure than his CV would indicate.

Therefore, when I notice that MJW has made the effort to turn the Beatdown franchise into a personal nestegg (this review written late in 2015, but I see there is a BEATDOWN 3 in the works) I cannot complain. Man's got to do what a man has got to do.

The film itself is entertaining and that is no small compliment. What it lacks oddly is the sheer meanness that was visible in Beatdown 1. The original in the series was less about MMA than it was about the horror of being a kid having to deal with other kids. The MMA was secondary.

Here the MMA takes center stage and if there was a template for this film it was NOT Beatdown 1 (name notwithstanding) but BEST OF THE BEST, which (if you review that film) had a bit of a Disney flavor to it.

At the very end of this film, if you stick it out past the final fight (and many of you will not) there is a feel-good montage of the kind you usually see in afterschool specials.

Again, the martial arts are not the only thing here that is "mixed." So are the themes.

what can I say

Seriously, gotta ask some of the reviewers if they even seen the movie because some look like they don't know what they're talking about and get stuff all mixed up or just make up things. Probably expected Undisputed 4 or some kind of movie with the quality of something like Lord of the Rings. Don't you just hate it when people do that?

About the movie itself.. If you expect some kind of blockbuster that should've been in cinema and and definitely belongs in every DVD collection then you should just walk away from this one. But if you just wanna enjoy a movie and liked the first one and the trailer for this one then this is something for you.

Inspite of what some people are saying here the acting for this movie was fine (nothing special, but good enough), the plot actually did make sense (and so did the fights) and there really was some character development (again, nothing great but it was enough for these kind of movies)

I give this 8 out of 10 for delivering exactly what I was hoping for after watching the first movie and seeing the trailer for this.

So if you liked the first movie and/or liked the trailer for this one and can enjoy a movie that's not some blockbuster thing, then go watch this.

It is worthy to watch just for Michael Jai White

Let me put it in this way:

  • Bad acting - Horrible plot - And a lot of unnecessary sex and f*** words everywhere

The only thing that is worthy about this movie is Michael, he is an excellent fighter, he knows about MMA, his technique and pretty well mastered and well executed. If you are looking to watch good fights you are gonna find them in this movie, what I did was looked for the fight and skip all the three things that I mentioned before.

The edition of the movie is well done, also the fight scenes are pretty cool, not fantasies just real stuff. If you know about martial arts you are going to noticed and enjoy the development of this matches.

What a waste of time....

Never Back Down 2 (2011) | My Rating☛ 5/10 Director: Michael Jai White Writer: Chris Hauty Stars: Stacey Asaro, Gralen Bryant Banks and Rus Blackwell 103 min- Action

What a waste of time....There was nothing in this movie other than Michael Jai White one single fight with the cops. Acting was way below than one could imagine except Michael Jai White. As far as Michael Jai White debut Direction he was OK but still a long way to go. The story goes like this Four fighters different backgrounds come together to train under an ex MMA rising star (Michael Jai White) and then ultimately have to fight each other and the traitor in heir midst. This movie can only be tolerated by those who love to see anything called "action" and die hard fan of MJW. Rest of the people plz don't bother to see.

Should only be viewed by mma fans

Never Back Down 2 is very much identical to the first movie, only with a much smaller budget and this time revolving around 4 main characters training under Case (Jai White). Considering that I'm a huge fan of mma, action-movies and Michael Jai White (as an actor), I hate to say that this movie was predictably annoying. I think casting a couple of Abercrombie models in a movie like this was somewhat cliché and a bit of an insult to the mma scene. The acting was noticeably lacking (with the exception of Jai White) and there were a few scenes including Case's troubles and Justin's troubles that seemed to be poorly executed and lacked realism. There were also a couple soft-core sex scenes that seemed out of place. It was interesting, however, to see Todd Duffee act as well as Lyoto.

The only credit I could give this movie was it's extremely low budget ($3 million) and the fact that it was shot in only 4 weeks. Other than that, I guess this is all I can come to expect. I knew I would have to watch this while the lady was away because I knew she wouldn't like it. Boy was I right. I bet she'll like Undisputed-II though.

Why would you film that?

I was very disappointed with this movie. The first Never Back Down easily became one of my favorite movies. Yes, I buy into cheesy stuff like that and I thought it was an amazing movie because not only did it have fighting but it had romance as well and a story that was very easy to follow.

This movie though was utter disappointment and I'm disgusted with the male mind and how far they allowed this movie to go. The sex scenes could have been easily cut out and the topless girls were unnecessary. If they want to keep that, they could have made a theatrical version of the movie for the girls of this world that don't want porn added into an otherwise decent movie.

I liked the characters and the cheesiness but there are parts of this movie that I wish I could unsee. I'm going to call terrible editing skills and horrible calls for which scenes are appropriate.

Underrated.

I give this movie an 8 out of 10 because i love the story. It is a little like the last one one but hey, I loved the last one too. I think everybody is judging this movie on the fights and not the actually story. I think the actors did a great job getting you into the story, and Epstein did a good job at being the villain. If you filled out a pro's and con's list of this movie I think there would be far more pro's. The mixed martial arts is greatly displayed and the characters look like real fighters. I hope they make a Never Back Down 3 with possibly bringing back Jake Tyler to add some class into it but as far as this movie goes. I really enjoyed viewing it and if your an mixed martial arts guy or even a boxing guy.. I recommend this movie.

Terrible

After watching the first movie, Never Back Down, I was extremely excited to see this movie.

That's about all the excitement that I had was the anticipation...

The acting is terrible, the lines are cheesy, and the movie is extremely predictable.

The only up to this film is that it made itself into a comedy for me and my friends to have jokes about for a couple weeks and to mock.

I was surprisingly disappointed by this one and would never think to watch it again. There is too much wrong in this film and they completely destroyed the reputation of the first movie as much as I had enjoyed that one.

Standard drama stuff, but Michael Jai White impresses in his directorial debut

I never saw NEVER BACK DOWN, but this sequel features Michael Jai White so it was a must see for me. Four kids from varied backgrounds get training advice from down-on-his-luck former MMA star and now ex-con Case Walker (White). You have Tim (former UFC fighter Todd Duffee), a college student trying to help make ends meet for his single mom; Zack (Alex Meraz), a former boxer who just had a humiliating loss that resulted in a career ending eye injury; Justin (Scottie Epstein), the comic book geek looking to get revenge on the guys who beat him up; and Mike (Dean Geyer), a college freshman wrestler who falls for Zack's girl and is dealing with the fact that his father left his mom for another man (really!). Can you guess which character ends up going rogue and using his violent tools for bad? They all learn how to enhance their previous skills (boxing, wrestling) in order to become well-rounded mixed martial artists for the upcoming Beatdown show produced by Max (Evan Peters, apparently the only connection to the first film).

Heading direct-to-video, this sequel apparently hits all the same notes as the first film. The drama, for the most part, is very standard stuff, although I did find Case's personal history to be well down. In addition to the lead role as the trainer, Jai White also made his directorial debut here. The man definitely knows his martial arts and should be commended for not only the (mostly) realistic action and training, but also imparting some wisdom in terms of the discipline's mental aspects (watch for a funny bit where he quotes Bruce Lee). He seems to have learned a lot from directors like Isaac Florentine and doesn't cheat during the brawls. It also helps that he had Epstein, who is a black belt in jiu-jitsu, and Eddie Bravo, former UFC commentator and inventor of the rubber guard at 10th Planet, serving as technical consultants for the fights. Of course, you have to take the good with the bad and there are also some more "cinematic" fights. White also has a bizarre love for montages featuring the blandest of generic white boy rock. The acting is pretty good all-around, with surprisingly strong performances from martial artists Epstein and Duffee. I say that after nearly two decades of watching MMA fighters embarrass themselves on film. Look for current UFC light heavyweight Lyoto Machida in a small role as himself.

Horrendous acting

Seems like the whole movie was written in less time than it takes to watch it from start to finish. The script plays out like a kids cartoon. Some of the worst acting I can recall seeing on film. Michael J White is ok but everyone else is Amatuer. Then the icing on the cake as if this movie isn't horrible enough it has the absolute worst soundtrack to top it all off. None of the music really fits with the scenes and just seems like bad music.

Totally underrated......

I watched this movie after seeing its IMDb review and expected crap, the main reason I watched it because I enjoyed the first movie a lot. But anyhow after watching this movie I'm like, what??? This movie was awesome! It entertained me thoroughly! Obviously not an Oscar flick, but why would u watch this for? Entertainment! That's what it provides! probably there wasn't any buildup for any fights unlike the first one, it still impressed me. Everyone loves a good training session before fight scene. This is my first ever review and I felt it deserved a better rating. 5.5 is way too low, I don't understand why people think that sequels always suck, I think it did great as a sequel, added extra elements, extra fights and some drama as well. On the whole I would give it a 9/10 just to increase its ratings. Else an 8 probably.
