Short review: Sometimes the only key to a films success is knowing exactly what it is, what it needs to do, and committing to the concept. 'The Toxic Avenger' knows exactly what it has to do to be successful. It has to be a little campy, not take itself too seriously, have some truly great kill scenes and keep the accelerator down at a non-stop pace. It does all those things and for that reason, a film that wouldn't usually be to my taste, was a very fun experience.
You can tell that the cast were having a blast making this. Every one of them seems to be given complete freedom to be as over the top and outrageous as they like. And they flourish. This was a fun one. 7/10.

The Toxic Avenger is a suitably gory and surprisingly funny low budget throwback to B-movies that's greatest strength comes from how consistently those jokes land. It updates the titular character for modern times effectively and is always moving quickly enough to remain a fun watch. The bad taste sensibilities are more than accounted for and it also has the required heart to be emotionally investing as well.
Peter Dinklage gets things off to a strong start thanks to his heartfelt performance as a downbeat guy who just wants to be a good dad. Once he hands over the physical work to Luisa Guerreiro, they work well together so it still feels like one character. Kevin Bacon is the fun kind of pathetic villain and Elijah Wood similarly gets some laughs out of his eccentric character. Taylour Paige does the narrative heavy lifting as well as delivering solid jokes.
Macon Blair's direction has a clear affection for this genre and when the smaller budget becomes visible it only adds to the charm. All the gore is fittingly bloody and gleefully over the top but it would've benefited from looking more practical overall. The occasionally snappy editing by Brett W. Bachman and James Thomas prevents the film from getting bogged down by the most common narrative tropes when they appear.

There are few movie characters who embody the role of "underdog" as fully as the Toxic Avenger. A lowly janitor at a chemical facility who is thrown into the slime by his nefarious bosses, he emerges as a mutant with superhuman strength and a glowing mop which is able to corrode human skin on contact.
A remake of the surprise 1984 hit from Troma Studios, this film is nothing if not inspirational. Peter Dinklage is mesmerizing in the title role, particularly in the early scenes before he is transformed into the creature. I can't help thinking that his performance was subdued by the heavy prosthetic make-up he wears in the later scenes. Also outstanding are Kevin Bacon as the scheming boss at the chemical plant and Elijah Wood as his creepy brother - who reminded me of the character of Riff Raff from The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

All of last year, I was certain that this movie wasn't ever going to be released and that was a disappointing notion. When I found out that it was going to be released in theaters unrated, I perked up.
I wouldn't say this was a hugely anticipated movie for me but I was excited. I just saw it a few hours ago and I've gotta say that it's just barely above average. The biggest problem with this movie is that a huge majority of the jokes in this movie fall flat and leave an awkward impression. It also didn't help that the tone and pacing for this movie was an absolute mess as well.
That being said, I was never bored or put off by the film. There's an amazing display of gore (even if it's hugely CGI) and sight gags as well. The whole cast also hams it the hell up which is a big plus.
I didn't hate the new Toxic Avenger but it's definitely nothing special.

After two long years of waiting, The Toxic Avenger has finally splattered its way onto the big screen and believe me, this delay had nothing to do with quality. Much like this summer's The Naked Gun revival, Macon Blair's reboot of the cult classic knows exactly what it is and leans into it unapologetically. The result? A crude, raunchy, blood-soaked horror-comedy that never once apologizes for its absurdity and delivers the splatterfest fans have been craving.
This fifth installment in the franchise-and a reimagining of the 1984 Troma classic-is every bit as outrageous as its predecessors but with a modern twist that blends old-school grindhouse charm with slick, updated filmmaking. There are tits, dicks, off-color jokes, and buckets of gore flying across the screen exactly what you'd expect from a Toxic Avenger movie, and then some. If you grew up on Lloyd Kaufman's wild, politically incorrect originals, you'll feel right at home. If you're new to Tromaville and more accustomed to the squeaky-clean tone of modern superhero flicks, buckle up. This one will either shock you or convert you.
Peter Dinklage absolutely owns the role of Toxie. He brings heart, grit, and just the right amount of tragic hero energy to a character that could have easily slipped into pure parody. His journey taking on the evil BTH corporation, led by Kevin Bacon's vile Bob Garbinger. Bacon, for his part, is clearly having a blast as the sleaziest CEO imaginable, chewing up every scene with cartoonish villainy.
The balance of practical effects and CGI is one of the movie's strongest points. The gore here is gloriously over the top but still tactile enough to keep that Troma DNA alive. Limbs fly, heads explode, and the screen is painted red in set pieces that rival some of the best splatter moments of the past decade. But what makes it work is that, underneath the carnage, there's still a story with heart, a hero who, despite his grotesque transformation, just wants to do the right thing.
The humor is as sharp and unapologetic as ever. Blair doesn't try to sanitize the material to make it "palatable" for modern audiences. Instead, he embraces the outrageousness of the original films and turns it up a notch, creating a film that is self-aware without ever becoming self parody.
The Toxic Avenger is a filthy, funny, and fantastically bloody good time. It's rare for a reboot to honor its source material while carving out its own identity, but Macon Blair and Peter Dinklage pull it off. Whether you're a lifelong fan of Toxie or a newcomer looking for something bold, brash, and completely insane, this one is not to be missed.

When this was announced I was intrigued and when I found out Macon Blair was directing, I was fully on board. I expected something putrid and heinous with a ton of violence. Now that this is finally here after almost 3 years of delays, I can say the brutality is there in heavy doses, but the comedy aspect that they went for is absolutely pathetic . Now I'm not saying the originals weren't zany and mightily cheesy. It's just for the time that is why they worked. This time around it's like they took gen z humor and threw it at a Gen x property and it just doesn't work. It's cringeworthy in the worst way. At times the extremism of it even goes into territory that gets bordeline creepy.
Another huge and glaring aspect is the casting of Peter Dinklage for Toxie . It just doesn't work flat out . I'm really not sure what they were thinking with that . It's also even more flabbergasting they don't even use him in the actual practical suit/mask . He's simply the voice over with a stunt double . Some of the other casting decisions were off as well with even some of the notables. I will say at times the visuals were kind of cool but that was about it . This film didn't need to happen if this was the effort they were gonna throw at it .

I liked this movie even more than I thought I would. I saw the originals when I was a kid but I barely remember them other than the fact that they were a goofy, bloody, and corny good time. And so thats all I was pretty much needing with this new version. Not hard to meet that expectation, right? But some of the reviews I saw had me questioning if even that bar was too high. It turns out that it wasn't at all. I sincerely enjoyed this movie! It hit those marks and even went a little higher. I had read that it was all over the place (I didn't find that true at all). I didn't have any trouble following this movie, didn't even have to try. I think some people just like over analyzing things. This is not a movie to over analyze. Just go have fun. It is corny. Are some things a little overly corny? (like the dumb band), sure, but that's the point. OVER THE TOP! It's supposed to be cheesy, corny, raunchy, bloody, and ridiculous. If you don't like that than why would you watch this movie? Lol. Goes to show you really can't take someone else's word, you just have to find out yourself. And to be honest, I don't understand why it was unrated and apparently had a hard time getting a distributor. I've seen way more gory movies with more foul language this year that are rated R. It had it's gory scenes for sure but I thought there would be a lot more of them. Anyways, this movie was good nostalgia while making it's own way, fun, and everything else I had hoped it would be. I hope they make more.
Peter Dinklage is the heart of The Toxic Avenger, nailing the balance of drama and comedy in this unrated chaos. His charisma drives the film's wild energy, and he leans into the absurdity with sharp wit, proving his acting chops even for those new to his work.
The humor hits hard at times-like the outrageous concert scene packed with props straight out of Troma's playbook-but too many gags flop, leaving the comedy uneven. When it works, it's gold; when it doesn't, it drags the film down.
Unfortunately, the second half loses steam with corny pacing and heavy-handed messaging that comes off preachy. The satanic, horned villain and his wife push the grotesque imagery too far, pulling you out of the fun as if the filmmakers got lost in their own weirdness.
Dinklage's performance and a few comedic gems keep it from total collapse, but the sluggish pacing, inconsistent humor, and preachy undertones sink what could have been a wild ride.

I watched The Toxic Avenger (2023) in theaters this evening. The storyline follows a widowed single dad raising his stepson who learns from his doctor that he has only six months to a year to live. Desperate for help, he turns to the owner of his company for treatment but is rejected, setting him on a path of revenge, transformation, and vengeance.
This film is directed by Macon Blair (I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore) and stars Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Kevin Bacon (Friday the 13th), Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings), Taylour Paige (Zola), and Jacob Tremblay (Doctor Sleep).
This movie gave me exactly what I wanted. It has the perfect blend of Hobo with a Shotgun and Class of Nuke 'Em High. I was glad it wasn't a straight remake but instead took the story in a fresh new direction. The characters, setting, and premise pull you right into its universe, delivering that gritty mix of grindhouse, horror, comedy, and sci-fi that you expect from a Toxic Avenger / Troma Entertainment production.
The acting hits the right notes, the storyline has more depth than expected, and the villains are perfectly over the top. The special effects shine with a great mix of practical work and CGI-the opening "arm" sequence, the Miss Meat Dinner scene, every battle with "Killer Nuts," and the climactic showdown gave me everything I was hoping for. I also loved the opening narration, the animation, and of course, the soundtrack.
If I had any complaints, I would have liked more from the transformation scene, and while some of the CGI was excellent, other moments felt uneven. Still, overall this film delivered exactly what I was looking for...and stay for the after credits.
In conclusion, The Toxic Avenger is far better than it has any right to be-a fun, modern reimagining of a cult classic. I'd score it a solid 7.5/10.

Dinklage and Elijah Wood both bring there A game as far as acting goes in this modern take on The Toxic Avenger.
It is a solid 7/10 for me, some things it does well and others not so well. The first 5 or 10 minutes are terrible but I enjoyed the other 95% of the movie, stick with it and don't stop watching after 5 or 10 minutes, it gets better.
The Acting is good, the music fits the movie well and the locations are good. The Negative aspect for me in the movie is the poor jokes, I was expecting them to be better overall.
As I mentioned above, Dinklage and Wood both do a great job and pull this movie up to a higher rating than it would have been without them in it.
This could have been a ton worse, its not perfect but it is better than expected.
Check it out if you liked the original or you like silly Horror flicks at all.
Story is good enough, the acting is Ace, the music is good, there are some good gory scenes and it is a good silly time of a movie. The comedy could be better and the editing could be slightly improved but the good out weighs the bad, check it out!

Nothing about this film worked for me at all.
I get what it was trying to do. I've seen other films which have attempted something similar in tone and style that I have enjoyed, but The Toxic Avenger just missed the mark.
The plot felt so ragged and boring. The humour just didn't land for me. The performances were fine. I get what they were trying to do, but it just wasn't to my taste.
There's a market and an audience out there for this kind of thing, but I am not that audience.

There's this idea currently that superhero movies have to be epic and cater to all audiences. But there was a time before, where superhero movies were just for fun. I'm looking at you Mystery Men, Blank Man, Batman Forever, The Mask.
While the original Toxie movies were very low budget at the time, this go around has some star-power and nice fx going for it. The jokes weren't all that laugh out loud, more of a smirk. Good amount of gore. A little bit o' Tromaville nudity.
It can't compete with today's superhero movies. But, it does have a certain 90's/00's feel to it that is fun to step out of current hollywood and into.
(I watched the original movies back in the 90's as a teenager. I'm sure there are bigger fans out there that could give a better review of this movie as a new entry to the franchise.)

This is a BONKERS, BONKERS movie, and its got the funniest line of year, possibly the decade....
Peter Dinklage stars in this remake / reboot of the 80s 'classic' the Toxic Avenger
Dinklage plays Waylon Gooze, a single step parent trying to do his best realising his teenage stepson while working as a janitor at Kevin Bacons Toxic Waste plant.
Meanwhile Taylour Paige plays JJ, a reporter / investigator trying to blew the whistle on corporate bad guy Kevin Bacon and his nefarious company and toxic waste dumping shenanigans (theres also a sub plot involving Kavin BAcons character owing money to the mob)
Waylon sees some stuff he shouldn't, he ends up falling / being pushed in a vat of toxic waste and he becomes, the TOXIC AVENGER.
Opens with a fun tongue in cheek smash cut montage with voice over from Peter DInklage, that goes some way to set the tone for the type of movie we're in for
Elijah Wood as Bacon's right hand man / brother is kind of a mix between The Penguin and his version of Gollum.
When he's on screen its great, but it feels like he's underused in this movie
Bacon is the one who steals the show, It felt like he was the only one who 100% got the tone of the movie.
Dinklage isn't bad, far from it, but it did kinda feel like he was acting in a different movie that everyone else at times, felt that way with Jacob Tremblay & Tsylour Paige.
The Killer NUTZ (the gang of thugs who also happen to be a band) who carry out the dirty work for BAcon / Wood, look like they wandered off the set of a Purge movie onto the Toxic Avenger set.....
Tone wise, for the most part it confidently has in tingue in its cheek, but at times that tone seems to falter a nit and some elements feel like they're from a different movie.
Once the first act is done and dusted, its feels like the movie settles in to itself and is comfortable in its own skin, and then we as the audience settle in and enjoy the ride.
And it is a BONKER ride. Its also bloody HILARIOUS at times. There's more than one laugh out loud moment, and, one moment in particual is the funniest thing I've seen in the cinema this year (let me know in the comments which bit you think I'm talking about
Its ultra violent (the word UNCUT was literally in the title card)
There's location text on screen like 'yonder spooky woods' and things like that, wo yeah, very much tongue in cheek and fun in that sense
I don't have the affinity to the original that many people do, I've seen the original but It wasn't a staple of my childhood or anything so I've not overwhelming connection to it,
So I'm ok with the story changes, with the fact they've rebooted and remade it.
Its not Dinklage in the Toxie suit, its Luisa Guerreiro. While she does a great job with the physicality of the role, the reality is all of Dinklage's lines were dubbed in after the fact, and it shows on more than one occasion, when that happens, it takes you out of the movie a little. It does feel like theres a disconnect between the physical role and the voice.
I saw it at 9am at a press screening at the Edinburgh Film Festival, so not quite the time or the crowd to fully embrace it. Speaking of embracing it,,,, why don't you go ahead and ... ahem... EMBRACE that SUBSCRIBE button.....THANK YOU
It was then shown to the public at midnight as part of the 'Midnight Madness' line up, I image the atmosphere at that screening was a little more.... lively.
-- On that not, my good friend Cinephile Mike was at both the 9am press screening AND the midnight madness screening, so I'm gonna pass you over to him for a brief moment as he tells what that was like, take it away Mike --
6/10 for the Toxic Avenger, totally bonkers, ultra violent at times, very much tongue in cheek if a little unsure of itself tonally at times.
There IS an end credits scene so be sure toi stick around for that, and If you wanna see my thoughts on other films from the Edinburgh film festival, you can click here.

First and foremost, after seeing the splendid reviews for this movie, waiting two years for its release, and being a fan of the original, I decided to go see The Toxic Avenger in theaters.
I'm not sure what movie other reviewers watched, or if they are even fans of the original film. Sure, the hype behind this film - especially to its particular audience, has grown rapidly, much akin to "Happy Gilmore 2", and just like that film, I'd say this was a huge disappointment.
Clearly, the budget is there for The Toxic Avenger remake. We see relatively well-known actors, intricate set pieces, and dynamic looks throughout the new "city" that serves for our movie's location.
Yet, The Toxic Avenger (2023) has none of the charm of the original movie. The new film is dark, and I'm not talking about tone. The odd usage of dark color tones is only accentuated by the introduction of our titular hero, and it appears they made the film extra dark so that "Toxie" would really pop.
Which leads me into my next critique. Why so much CGI? You can literally see that the budget went to pay the big-name actors, and to the CGI, and yet the story is lackluster at best.
Both Dinklage and Bacon are pretty mediocre in their roles. While Dinklage certainly gives his usual quality delivery, it feels completely out of place in this movie. Which leads to many problems with the tone of the film. The original movie was definitely weird and off-kilter - it was so unusually original that the ebbs and flows all felt authentic to the filmmaker's vision.
The New Toxic Avenger is all over the place - shifting from a farce, to a political drama, to a "comedy", although in an empty theater I didn't find myself laughing once. Furthermore, just the small, juvenile aspects of the original movie - what some may see as flaws, but what added the character to the film - they are not present in the remake. I felt as though this film, for whatever reason, actually attacked some of those immature themes of the original movie.
Things for the male-gaze to gawk at? Not in this film. Quality practical effects? Not in this film. Grotesque violence? I guess if you call laughably bad CGI violence. There's a wide array of oddly liberal undertones pushed in this narrative, which is nothing new for a Toxic Avenger story, yet this film feels like it's trying to be subtle - while completely distancing or alienating fans.
The Toxic Avenger (2023), released in theaters in 2025, is at best a re-imagining of a classic campy "bad" movie; which in itself was one of the best bad movies of all time. Yet the new Toxic Avenger actually achieves making it truly bad, full of weird undertones, and almost unwatchable. As excited as I was before the film, I almost walked out of the theater at least twice. This is the Toxic Avenger brand trying to be numerous different films in one (including a family drama), while lacking any of the substance or outlandishness that made the original film stand the test of time.
I can not recommend this movie, as I have no idea who this movie was made for. 3/10
(I got back on IMDB after almost a decade just to leave this review, if that shows you how disappointing this movie was.)

I'll keep this review short and to the point. This movie keeps that Troma charm, and even has some throwbacks for Troma fans. It was actually way better than I expected it to be, and if you're a Troma fan wanting to watch a Troma Movie, you won't be upset.
I'm fairly certain that a lot of the lower reviews on here wouldn't last through even 30 minutes of the original, and definitely not any portion of part 4.

'The Toxic Avenger' has had a long and crazy journey, going back to the original's release in 1984. You should now know what to expect when you see Toxie coming. This is the first "Hollywood" adventure for the franchise, and it does a solid job overall of providing you with some dark, gruesome, and out-there entertainment. It's still a B-level movie like the others, but it does try to elevate the storytelling while keeping the slapstick and gore to the levels you expect, and it's mostly successful with that.
'The Toxic Avenger' is a wild and over-the-top ride that has a few missteps, but if you allow yourself just to let loose and be in the moment, you can have a good time with it (as long as you like the obscene and over-the-top gore and vulgar humor).

A remake that neither replicates nor ignores the original. Plenty of knowing jokes (New Chem High School, the St Roma's Village location, with both esses faded) and an opening animation that will feel familiar.
Peter Dinklage and Kevin Bacon having the time of their lives; Jacob Tremblay and Taylor Paige a solid rhythm section; but Elijah Wood in a sadly derivative role (Penguin / Minions bad guy). A band of musician assassins - think Insane Clown Posse / Slipknot - provide slapstick, and a subplot involving the primary villain being in hock to worse villains was entertaining.
No real attempt at moral nuance or intellectual rigour - I loved the doctor explaining the technical stuff - but great fun and well worth the time and ticket money.

I. Camp from the first frame.
Right out of the gate the movie lets you know what you're in for-over-the-top, self-aware camp. The title cards, the 80s-infused soundtrack, the practical effects-it all works together to set a tone that feels true to the Troma spirit. I'm glad they leaned practical over CGI, because the latter would have killed the vibe.
II. It feels small, for better and worse.
The whole production has the feel of a short film-quick, scrappy, rough around the edges. It doesn't spend much time on any one thing, which keeps it moving but also makes it hard to connect deeply. That pacing choice is both its strength and its weakness.
III. Humor and heart, sometimes clashing.
The odd injections of humor mostly work, but only just. The big surprise for me was how emotional the exchange between Toxie and Wade turned out to be-it gave the film a weight I wasn't expecting. The psycho-killer band, on the other hand, didn't add much and felt cheap compared to the rest of the gags.
IV. Predictable, but that's kind of the point.
The plot beats are easy to see coming, but in a movie like this, that predictability is part of the charm. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and it shouldn't. Still, by the end I was left more amused than invested, which is why it lands squarely in the middle for me: fun in bursts, forgettable overall.

Long term Troma fan here... this movie hurt.
Lied that this was ultra violent like Terrifier. Lies. Horrible script, pacing, everything was childish. Villains were meh. Winston.... and all the name changes. No car flip. CGI overabundance, low practical effects. Felt like a low-budget Full Moon kids movie from 1996. Where was the sleaze and gore? Humor was cringy. It's not even a good bad good movie... tedious. Sad sad sad. Avoid.

The Toxic Avenger Uncut: Black Comedy/Horror flm which is very much a pastiche of superhero creation stories. It's a remake/reboot of the 1984 film. Completely over the top violence mixed with acidic urine makes this an ultimate bad taste movie. Every cliche is exploited. Winston Gooze (Peter Dinklage) becomes the Toxic Avenger after he is splashed with chemicals and left for dead by goons. With his trusty chemical encrusted mop he beheads, bisects heads and cuts crooks to pieces. His home town is ruled by the mob and Bob Garbinge (Kevin Bacon)r a chemical factory owner in cahoots with them. Garbinger is like Monty Burns on steroids or rather gorilla blood which he regularly infuses. A Monster Core group are assassins in between gigs, they even kill people with trident spearguns. Great fun provided you have a strong stomach. Written and Directed by Macon Blair. 7/10.

A cult movie isn't about pretending. It's all about the spirit and the guts. This film aimed for something but totally missed the point. Even the background music misused and somehow I found it really disturbing. I was trying hard not to leave the theater halfway through. A test for patience...indeed.

When comes to the Toxic Avenger, you're either gonna get it or you're not.
This reimagining of the Toxic Avenger is surprisingly good! I grew up with the Toxic Crusaders cartoon and the first three Toxic Avenger films as well as other Troma films, so I had an idea of what to expect.
A film like this is most likely to appeal to Troma and Toxic Avenger fans. There's a lot of nods to the original Toxic Avenger films, character names, signs, a cameo from Lloyd Kauffman, and a tribute to Lemmy from Motorhead. Lemmy had cameos in various Troma films.
Anyway the regular Troma humor and gore is here. If not familiar with Troma films or the Toxic Avenger and you just want to check out something different the Toxic Avenger is worth a look.

After a terminal diagnosis, a lack of insurance coverage, and a morally bankrupt employer, a lowly janitor gets caught up in something bigger than him and becomes a hero that the city did not know it needed.
An over-the-top satirical superhero movie with a story reflecting the current state of the healthcare industry. The movie features several gory and comedic action sequences. The one-hour and forty-minute runtime is sufficient to convey the point of the story. This is a unique watch worthy of a stream.
