If Shane Black has done his job as a writer and director, the legendary screenwriter who gave us "Lethal Weapon," "The Last Boy Scout," and "The Long Kiss Goodnight" (three of the greatest Hollywood action films made during the genre's blow-the-doors-off heyday) will launch a singular crime franchise with his new movie "Play Dirty." Black's film is based on the character of Parker, an unrepentant thief-killer created by Donald E. Westlake under the nom de plume of Richard Stark. The last name of the latter author says it all; unlike the criminal mischief depicted in many of Westlake's books, Stark's Parker is a man of few words and zero remorse.

You couldn’t find a starker illustration of Hollywood’s changing seasons than what will happen next Wednesday, Aug. 27.
At 7 p.m. Central European Time in Venice, Italy, a screening of Paolo Sorrentino’s “La Grazia” will kick off the 2025 Venice International Film Festival, with the ensuing two weeks bringing three festivals and the premieres of at least a dozen likely contenders for the Academy Awards.
And on the same day back in the U.S.A., final voting for the 2024-2025 Primetime Emmy Awards will come to an end, meaning that for this year’s Emmy season, it’ll be all over but the counting and the envelope-opening.

For a genre so predicated on specific markers, it's kind of amazing what a seemingly endless shelf life the Western has — maybe because the skeletal structure of a Western can, as film history has frequently demonstrated, be applied to myriad subgenres, time periods, countries, cultures, and stories.
The selection of Westerns available for viewing on Netflix is a testament to that versatility and renewability. The strongest Western films and TV shows in the streamer's U.S. catalogue range from goofy comedy to dark fantasy, from the 18th century to the present day, and from South Korea to Canada. But then one of his one-night stands results in a child, leading to the birth of his daughter, Ellie. This new turn in his life really changes him as Barney finds a new purpose in fatherhood.

While it took decades for a fourth installment in The Naked Gun franchise to hit the big screen, it sounds like we could be left waiting even longer for a fifth. The Naked Gun Box Office: Liam Neeson’s Reboot Nets $28.5M(Photo Credit –Facebook)
Liam Neeson has returned to theaters in a big way with The Naked Gun; with it, the comedy genre is breathing again. After years without a major box office win, Neeson is finally front and center in a film that is clicking with both critics and moviegoers.
R-rated comedies have not had much success on the big screen lately, usually landing on streaming with forgettable results. Sony gave it a try earlier with No Hard Feelings starring Jennifer Lawrence, which managed around $80 million worldwide. Now, Paramount is stepping in with this reboot, helmed by Akiva Schaffer and backed by Seth MacFarlane.
The Naked Gun is fucking phenomenal – I literally spent 85 minutes laughing non-stop. More of this Liam Neeson, please, and Pamela? She absolutely Ate. Comedy of the year, no notes. I need more of this energy Asap!

Hannah Waddingham and Keira Knightley together in a psychological thriller? Sign me up! Both of them will star in Netflix’s The Woman in Cabin 10. The upcoming film is directed by Simon Stone and is based on Ruth Ware’s bestselling 2016 novel of the same name. The film is about a journalist who watches someone get thrown overboard a luxury yacht. However, she is told that nothing happened and that all the crew and passengers are accounted for.
Even though no one believes her, she puts her life in danger to uncover the truth. Having Knightley and Waddingham in it will surely infuse the suspense-filled narrative with powerful female leads who can give the characters the gravitas and range they require. Waddingham broke out as a powerhouse performer after holding her own as Rebecca Welton opposite Ted Lasso co-stars Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein.

With The Naked Gun reboot, star Liam Neeson and the comedy genre in general have both been resuscitated. Neeson hasn’t headlined a live-action vehicle to success in years, while R-rated comedies have mostly been relegated to streaming. It may be Superhero Summer with movies like Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps dominating the box office charts, but one of the steamy season’s most anticipated comedies, The Naked Gun, is ready to rake in millions for the genre. According to analysts, The Naked Gun is targeting a $15-$17 million debut from 3,300 locations. The amount is a decent bit of scratch for a rebooted comedy, especially as the genre struggles at the box office. As Liam Neeson points out in a recent Naked Gun PSA, comedy films don’t perform in theaters like they used to, and if we want movies like The Naked Gun not only to exist, but succeed, we need to show up to the cinema when it counts.

The Naked Gun has me asking, “What happened to kill the comedy film?” Tentpole, IP-driven franchises that sell well overseas have pushed the genre to the sidelines. Another issue is that comedy films often rely on star power. We haven’t had a breakout comedic lead in the vein of Jim Carrey or Adam Sandler in years.
The latter made the jump to streaming—Happy Gilmore 2 fans, rejoice! Melissa McCarthy once looked like the genre’s savior, but her husband’s heavy involvement in her projects arguably derailed her momentum. With no new marketable stars, comedy began blending into other genres—Deadpool & Wolverine, for example.
They say comedy evolves, but cancel culture and cultural shifts started to smother creative risk-taking. So, in a full-circle moment, studios returned to The Naked Gun—the fourth installment of the classic spoof franchise. And it’s the movie we didn’t know we needed.

Taken star and iconic aged action hero Liam Neeson has offered up a perfectly pitched, unashamedly foul-mouthed reason why audiences need his imminent action comedy reboot. From Friday, Neeson will take over from the late, great comedic icon Leslie Nielson as the lead of Police Squad in the long-awaited reboot of The Naked Gun, and the actor knows why we need to spend some time with Frank Drebin Jr. now more than ever.
During an appearance at the New York City premiere, Liam Neeson said it all when delivering a deadpan response to why modern audiences need The Naked Gun, giving both barrels and reflecting the thoughts and feelings of, well, everyone, saying...

Juggling her successful career and responsibilities as a single mother, Waddingham isn’t actively looking for a new relationship. While her on-screen characters have navigated some serious romantic dramas in their run, Waddingham herself has taken a different path when it comes to marriage. "Star Trek: Voyager" introduced Nancy Hower's Ensign Samantha Wildman in the fourth episode of the show's second season, "Elogium" (which first aired in 1995). Described as a xenobiology expert during her introduction, the character was named after Samantha Wildman, a real-life young girl who, after dying in a tragic accident, had donated life-saving organs to co-writer Jimmy Diggs' wife. Hower's character would go on to give birth to her daughter, Naomi, in the 1996 episode "Deadlock," which was a dramatic wrinkle for "Voyager." Recall that the premise of the series was that the U.S.S. Voyager was lost in space, 70 years from Earth. This meant Wildman's daughter -- who was half human and half Ktarian -- would have to be raised in space.

"Oh, Hi!" starts off like a rom-com, but also like a horror movie. We meet Iris (Molly Gordon) and her boyfriend Isaac (Logan Lerman) as they spend a nice weekend up in a secluded house out of the city, and during that first day, everything seems suspiciously perfect. Indeed, Iris and Isaac seem to be getting along a little too well, and we know this wouldn't be much of a movie if nothing went wrong.
Finally, the penny drops: While Isaac is handcuffed to a bed post-coitus, he reveals that he's not ready for a relationship. Iris is baffled, because it sure seemed like she and Isaac were already in a relationship. But Isaac doesn't see it this way. Despite inviting her for a weekend getaway upstate and being romantic with her throughout the whole first act, he doesn't see Iris as his girlfriend and has zero interest in letting that happen.

Broadly speaking, the box office has been on shaky ground over the last handful of years. Ever since the pandemic shut down theaters all across the world for months on end in 2020, the industry has been in a constant state of flux. Streaming has upended all traditional logic, and Hollywood is increasingly trying to hit a smaller moving target. One of the biggest genres that has become a question mark in the modern era is comedy, specifically of the theatrical variety. The question is, can "The Naked Gun," a new take on the Leslie Nielsen classic, help save comedies at the box office?
As of this writing, director Akiva Schaffer's "The Naked Gun," which is produced by "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, is looking at a debut between $23 and $32 million when it arrives in theaters next weekend, per Box Office Theory. For what it's worth, even on the low end,...

According to Liam Neeson (and the past several years of film releases), comedy at the cinema is dying. Back in my day, you couldn’t last the school day without hearing people talk about films like Tommy Boy, Airheads, Wayne’s World, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Coneheads, The Big Lebowski, Napoleon Dynamite, and more. Those days are steadily going the way of the dodo. However, in a new PSA, Liam Neeson says you can help save the genre by showing your support for The Naked Gun, coming to theaters on August 1, 2025.
Here’s the official synopsis for The Naked Gun:

Having completed a full month of release in theaters worldwide, Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon remake flew towards another global box office milestone. It’s the second-highest-grossing installment of the fan-favorite franchise, having beaten the lifetime global haul of the original animated film, and the series' third installment. It now trails only How to Train Your Dragon 2, whose own remake is already slated for a 2027 release. The movie is inching closer to the $600 million mark at the worldwide box office, reestablishing the audience’s faith in live-action remakes of animated hits, after a string of big-budget films underperformed in recent years.

Ted Lasso is a show that manages to be hilarious and heartwarming. The show about being good has been hailed as too simplistic by many, but it has layers of emotional depth. Additionally, the show also doesn’t shy away from paying homage to films and shows that have shaped the zeitgeist. Season 2’s episode, Rainbow, added some rom-com magic to the football storyline to improve the emotional arcs of the characters.
From Notting Hill to Pretty Woman, Ted Lasso has borrowed visual motifs, musical cues, and iconic lines to create subtle love letters to rom-coms. Thankfully, it all works to make the viewer fall more in love with the characters. Also, it helps that these easter eggs are all smartly incorporated into the characters’ emotional arcs. So, let us break down these easter eggs.

When it comes to predicting the Emmys, there is one group of bellwether categories worth paying close attention to. Over the past decade, a notable trend has emerged: the winners for Best Drama Series and Best Drama Casting have mirrored each other seven times; Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Casting eight times; and Best Limited Series and Best Limited/Movie Casting nine times. That's a combined accuracy rate of 80 percent over the most recent 10-year period.

Recently, I re-watched Ted Lasso to brush up on the lore and prepare myself for the upcoming season. One thing that I stuck out like a sore thumb that I did not realize the first time was when, in Season 2, Episode 7, titled “Headspace,” Nate kisses Keeley. It was a shocking scene that I was surprised to see in the final cut!
Even Reddit threads made it weirder for me to analyse the scene. This became a notable scene that has gone around and become a point of discussion. Both the characters had their space and situations, but what is more to see through is the fact that Keeley is already Roy’s girlfriend at this point, not to mention the issue of consent.

Mark Wahlberg is making a grand comeback to the small screen in Peacock’s Ted: The Animated Series, a spinoff of the commercially successful movie franchise as well as the prequel series. According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, the actor has been confirmed to reprise the role of John Bennet in a voice role.
Wahlberg was asked to return for the Peacock TV series, but due to his hectic schedule, the network ultimately decided to create a prequel show with a new cast.
The actor has not been seen on any scripted television shows since 1993, when he starred in the television drama The Substitute and made cameo appearances in The Ben Stiller Show and Out All Night. Since then, the former rapper-turned-actor has only appeared as himself on several variety shows.

The ultimate list of Peacock shows you need to binge right now.
Peacock doesn’t always get talked about in the same breath as some of the flashier streamers, but its TV lineup is quietly one of the best around — especially if you love great comedy. NBC basically wrote the playbook for modern TV humor, giving us classics like “Seinfeld,” “Friends,” “The Office,” and “Parks and Rec.” But lately, Peacock’s original series have been stepping up in a big way too, with some great mysteries, dark comedies, and even some solid prequels that feel right at home alongside the old favorites. In fact, a few of those newer originals have edged out some older classics on this updated list. So let’s get into it.

No. 9: ‘New Girl’

Top 10 all-time TV shows streaming on Peacock:
No. 10: ‘Based on a True Story’
No. 9: ‘New Girl’
No. 8: ‘The Resort’

A closer look at what Apple TV+ nails, where it falls short, and why I won’t be losing it anytime soon.
I love streaming TV, and (for both personal and professional reasons) I have been subscribed to all the major streamers for years, and now I’m going to put that knowledge to good use by breaking down the highs and lows of every streamer’s library.
Apple TV+ is a great place to start because it takes such a different approach to content than its competitors. So, in this article, I’ve broken things down into what Apple TV+ does really well, where I think it could improve, how often new shows actually drop, and how deep the library is. This is obviously my personal take — you might feel totally differently — but if you’re curious about whether Apple TV+’s “quality over quantity” approach works (and where...

Taken star and aged action icon Liam Neeson stretches his comedy muscles more than ever before this year, taking over from the late, great Leslie Nielson in the long-gestating reboot/sequel to The Naked Gun. The first reactions to the action comedy have now started to emerge on social media, and it turns out they can still make ‘em like they used to.
“‘The Naked Gun’ is so deliciously stupid, and I mean that as the highest compliment. Very true to the spirit of the Leslie Nielsen movies I grew up loving. #NakedGun,” said X/Twitter user and critic @katcystephan. Fellow fan @jeffreyvega adds...
“I saw The Naked Gun and I can now say they Are making them like they used to! There are so many great jokes in this and you can tell the filmmakers had so much fun making an actual comedy movie. #NakedGun”

Exclusive: Aspiring writer-director David Mikalson has made a deal with A24 to direct The Goblin, a script he wrote that spread like wildfire around Hollywood. While others might have eyed the raunchy comedy as a writing sample or planned to wait to see the micro-budget version Mikalson has been directing in Kentucky, A24 jumped all over it. The hot indie essentially has agreed to finance a full feature. I’ve heard the outlay might be upwards of $6 million, but that will depend on the actor they get to voice the title character.
The script is described as Ted meets E.T.
I’ve been writing about Hollywood deals long enough to remember the days when everyone in Hollywood got out of bed with a puncher’s chance to make their mark quickly. It has been a tough few years for the movie business, but maybe a strong summer has given...
