Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Kevin Costner has a new film, Jake Gyllenhaal to co-star
Image
Kevin Costner and Jake Gyllenhaal will star in Honeymoon With Harry, from the directors of Crazy Stupid Love. More here.

Just over a year since the release of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One, Kevin Costner’s four-movie western epic remains in some degree of limbo. The second film has been completed and screened, but not distributed. There’s a legal case about the way a scene in the second movie was shot. There’s no sign of films three and four going before the cameras, as Costner continues to raise funds to finish the series off.

In the meantime, he’s signed up for a new film, and presumably the income from that might be useful at the moment. He’s going to be co-starring with Jake Gyllenhaal in Honeymoon With Harry, a new comedy drama that’s been backed by Amazon MGM Studios.

It’s based on a book by Bart Baker,...

How Rainn Wilson Really Felt When Steve Carrell Left The Office
Image
One of the most recognizable stars of the century has shared his real feelings about one of the momentous moments in modern TV history.

This year, the most popular American sitcom of the 2000s celebrated its 20th anniversary. While the original British version of certainly made a significant impact in the comedy landscape, the American adaptation has more than usurped it in terms of its ubiquity and recognizability in the popular culture zeitgeist, much of which is due to the series' ensemble cast. During what is widely considered its golden era, the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company was led by its regional manager, Michael Scott (Steve Carell). Although the character began the series with a more abrasive, odious demeanor, Michael was rewritten to be more likable, while keeping many of his eccentricities. Even with some of his bizarre methods of leadership, Michael became one of the...

‘The Office’ Star Rainn Wilson Says the Show Was a ‘Struggle’ After Steve Carell Left: ‘We Knew it Was Coming For a Long Time’
Image
Rainn Wilson recently appeared on the “Good Guys” podcast and opened up about the difficulties filming “The Office” after Steve Carell left the show in 2011.

Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute, discussed his experience working on the comedy series for nine seasons with podcast hosts Josh Peck and Ben Soffer. “The Office” co-star admitted in the interview that it was challenging for the cast and production to continue the show after they lost their leading man.

“When Steve left, then it was a little bit chaotic of trying to figure out the tone of the show and who’s the lead and, how are we telling these stories without, you know, the comic engine of the show, which is Michael Scott, and without one of the greatest comic actors in American history at the center of our show. That was also a struggle.” Wilson explained.

However, Wilson shared that Carell’s...

Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn Almost Got A Movie With DC's Most Controversial Character
Image
This summer, the brand reputation of DC Comics on the big screen will hopefully be rehabilitated with the release of James Gunn's "Superman." The film is the first big screen entry in the new Dcu, and will set the foundation for what's to come, after a decade of constant hit-or-miss projects from the now-defunct DC Extended Universe (Dceu). The Dceu kicked off in 2013 with Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel," and in the years following that film's release, this shared universe struggled significantly due to inconsistent quality amongst its releases. Perhaps the worst Dceu film comes in the form of "Suicide Squad," which hit theaters in 2016, just a couple of months after "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" released to negative critical reception and polarized responses from audiences.

Directed by David Ayer (although he has since disowned the film), "Suicide Squad" sought to be an exciting, original new cinematic...

Where You've Seen The Cast Of Netflix's Sirens Before
Image
Netflix subscribers have apparently been enjoying a unique and twisted getaway recently via the sleeper hit black dramedy series "Sirens." Created by playwright Molly Smith Metzler and executive produced by "Barbie" star/producer Margot Robbie, among others, the five-episode limited series follows two sisters on vastly diverging paths who are somewhat forced to reconnect at a billionaire's summer home.

As hard as it would be for these two sisters to reconcile under the most normal of circumstances -- one dropped out of college to devote her life to a wealthy socialite; the other just got out of prison -- their relationship is further strained by the influence of the various bizarre, unsettling, and out-of-touch people that now surround them.

"Sirens" is an ensemble series in the truest sense. From the billionaire herself to her in-house chef, each character has a memorable impact on the story -- and each one of...

Sterling K. Brown and Dan Fogelman celebrate ‘Paradise’ with Season 2 hints: No to more of Xavier’s bare backside, yes to moody Elvis covers
Image
Paradise star Sterling K. Brown can’t say much about the hotly anticipated second season of the mystery-driven, post-apocalyptic drama. But he can confirm — perhaps to the dismay of some fans — that his naked backside likely won’t be making a return appearance.

“Me and [Rachel] Brosnahan had this conversation, like, ‘Once you show them once, once is enough!’” he told Gold Derby at a reception celebrating the Hulu series’ breakout success. Brown likened his character Xavier Collins’ revealing scene to Brosnahan’s brief exposure in the debut episode of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. “You may see him in various states of undress, but the Full Moon will be saved for another series.”

Still, he offered a small teaser: “We will see what the world is like outside of the bunker, and it's definitely not like what it was inside.”

Inside the chic, tucked-away Hollywood lounge Mars, Brown was joined by costars Julianne Nicholson,...

10 Best Joey King Movies & TV Shows, Ranked
Image
At just 25 years old (as of writing), Joey King has been featured in over 70 films and television shows dating as far back as 2006. Given the sheer volume of work she takes on, it's not shock that many of these have been critical and commercial duds you've either never heard of or wish you'd never heard of, like the "Final Destination" riff-off "Wish Upon," the middling ghost romance "The In Between," and the irredeemably pandering sci-fi thriller "Uglies."

At the same time, King has consistently turned high-quality performances in some memorable projects. Fans of "The Dark Knight Rises," "Crazy Stupid Love," and "The Conjuring" are proof that she's been ready for almost any acting challenge since she first appeared on a screen. From her extensive resume, we picked out our favorite roles and ranked them based on quality and how well they showcase King as an actor.

Kevin Bacon On Developing This Surprising Fear At A Wedding
Image
You’d be surprised to find out that there really is something that Kevin Bacon fears, and believe you me it is not your average fear.

Remember how the name of his breakthrough musical drama is “Footloose?” Well, keep that in mind as we forge on to discover why Kevin Bacon and weddings don’t mix so well.

Kevin Bacon Says People Would Treat Him Like A “Trained Monkey” Because of One of His Earlier Movies

Kevin Bacon is as free going as the next guy, but not when people start treating him like a circus animal. The Golden Globe Award winning star touched on his many decades in the spotlight during a career retrospective at SXSW in Austin, Texas, on Friday, March 7.

During the discussion, the actor couldn’t help pointing out how “Footloose” continues to influence his life many decades after the film originally premiered in 1984.

He said: “It’s what I wanted,...

Why Emma Stone Replaced Emma Watson In La La Land
Image
Damien Chazelle's "La La Land" is a bittersweet tale of a romance that almost was. The story of Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and Mia (Emma Stone) is of a love that is very much requited and yet, due to circumstances, simply cannot be. That theme of a near-miss is very much the real-life story of the movie as well as its fictional narrative in a number of ways. For one, the film infamously nearly won Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Although this was less an instance of a near-miss and more just a genuine mistake, there was a good minute there where the filmmakers thought it actually happened.

That's not the only near-miss that "La La Land" experienced during its journey from inception, to cinemas, to awards season. When the film was first being developed, Chazelle had two completely different actors in mind for the leading roles: Miles Teller and Emma Watson.

‘Heart Eyes’ Review: ‘My Bloody Valentine’ Meets ‘Set It Up’ in Josh Ruben’s Brilliant Horror Rom-Com
Image
Throughout Josh Ruben’s brilliant new Valentine’s Day slasher “Heart Eyes,” potential suspects and would-be victims reference real romantic comedies. “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” “Crazy Stupid Love.” “Pretty Woman.” Whatever your preferred chick flick — combined with the predator-prey mania of “My Bloody Valentine” (and just a touch of the goofiness in “Scream 6”) — that should be enough to compel you toward this giddy and graphic whodunit. It’s a freaky celebration that confirms holiday horror, if it ever left, is so back, and a standout achievement in the deceptively dense category of recent romances across genre comedy.

Silly, slick, and self-aware, the latest farce from the “Werewolves Within” director is laugh-out-loud funny and boasts pops of gore that earn the comparison to Eli Roth’s “Thanksgiving.” Although the killer pilgrim movie from 2023 is more stomach-churning than Ruben’s film, this nutty blend of hyper-violence and one-liners is a dark comedic delicacy.

‘Paradise’ Creator Dan Fogelman On The Twist In The Pilot & Why He Kept The Show’s Plot Under Wraps For So Long
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains plot points from the first three episodes of Paradise on Hulu.

After dropping the first episode of Paradise on Sunday, Hulu has made episodes 2 and 3 of the thriller available to audiences that should have provided a bit more context to that mysterious twist at the end of the pilot.

Here, creator Dan Fogelman talks about what inspired him to write the thriller starring Sterling K. Brown, James Marsden and Julianne Nicholson and why we had to wait until the premiere to finally learn what he’s been working on since wrapping his NBC drama This Is Us in 2022.

Deadline: Before we get into Paradise, I want to start at the moment after This is Us. Did you wonder if you developed a reputation as a creator of triple-hanky family dramas?

Dan Fogelman: I was pretty exhausted. It had been a long six years of making a lot of television.

Paradise TV Review: Sterling K. Brown leads the twistiest original series in years
Image
Plot: Set in a serene community inhabited by some of the world’s most prominent individuals. But this tranquility explodes when a shocking murder occurs, and a high-stakes investigation unfolds.

Review: You are not prepared for Paradise. Sure, the trailers make it out to be a somewhat run-of-the-mill political thriller about the murder of the President of the United States and his most trusted protector, who may be involved in a massive conspiracy. Still, it is so much more than that. Built as a serial drama with a fantastic ensemble cast, Paradise draws structurally from series like Lost and Yellowjackets by combining a contemporary timeline with flashbacks that fill in the gaps of how the characters got to where they are today but also manages to upend the conventions of what we expect from a series like this. Having seen the entire series (except for the finale), I have a lot of thoughts about Paradise,...

Steve Carell: Net Worth, Age, Height & Everything You Need To Know About The Actor
Image
Steve Carell is one of Hollywood's most beloved actors. Best known as Michael Scott on The Office, Carell has also built a successful film career with classics like Anchorman and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. After conquering comedy, Carell shifted to dramatic roles in The Big Short and Foxcatcher, earning his first Academy Award nomination for the latter. Recently, he's returned to television, delivering acclaimed performances in The Morning Show (Apple TV+) and The Patient (FX), and signing on for a new HBO series. However, his most lucrative role might be voicing Gru in the six films in the Despicable Me franchise.

The youngest of four brothers, Carell grew up in Acton, Massachusetts. Though he planned to go law school, Carell caught the performing bug after joining a student-run improv troupe while attending Denison University. Hulu Picks Up NFL-Set Drama Series From Dan Fogelman
Image
Dan Fogelman is adding another Hulu series to his portfolio, this one set in the high-stakes world in the NFL.

Hulu has given a series pickup to the untitled project, which is from 20th Television and Skydance Sports. Details are sparse, though it is said to involve a generational family dynamic, in addition to its setting in the NFL.

Skydance Sports, it is worth noting, is a joint venture between David Ellison’s Skydance and the NFL. The league is notoriously careful about its brand, but told The Hollywood Reporter last year that it wants to develop more scripted fare via the Skydance Jv.

Fogelman is serving as writer and executive producer alongside Jess Rosenthal with David Ellison, Jesse Sisgold, and Jason T. Reed serving as EPs for Skydance Sports.

Fogelman, of course, is the creator behind the hit NBC family drama This Is Us, with feature credits like Cars,...

Saoirse Ronan Dishes on Ryan Gosling Being Fired from The Lovely Bones
Image
Saoirse Ronan, the Academy Award-nominated actor in films like Lady Bird, Brooklyn and Little Women, remembers when a very prominent actor was fired days before shooting started on her thriller film, The Lovely Bones. As originally planned, Ryan Gosling would play Ronan's father in the film (despite just a 14-year difference and Gosling being 27), but director Peter Jackson made the abrupt decision to fire Gosling from the movie. Why? An unexpected decision related to... method acting?

The Lovely Bones stars Ronan as Susie Salmon, a 14-year-old student who gets murdered by an unknown stranger. Now in purgatory (or "The In-Between"), Susie tries her best to comfort her family any way she can, but she also helps everyone in finding the murderer who violently took her life. The film was based on Alice Sebold's supernatural drama novel of the same name.

Before Suicide Squad, Improvised Trash-Talking Led To Margot Robbie And Will Smith's First Team-Up
Image
A year before Will Smith and Margot Robbie co-starred in "Suicide Squad," they teamed up for a crime caper that fared a lot better critically than David Ayer's ill-fated supervillain team-up. These days, Robbie is riding high after "Barbie" became the highest-grossing movie of 2023. The Aussie star will soon follow up that success with a starring role opposite Colin Farrell in Kogonada's "A Big Bold Beautiful Journey," not to mention the slew of films her production company, LuckyChap, has lined up.

Smith, meanwhile, hasn't been in the public eye as much in recent years, following what was a disastrous 2022 for the actor. His upcoming role alongside Martin Lawrence in "Bad Boys: Ride of Die" — the trailer for which looks like it will please longtime franchise fans — will be a real test for the actor, and should give a good indication on how the general public are feeling about Smith...

Emma Stones Advice That Inspired Ryan Goslings Incredible SNL Papyrus Sketch
Image
Stone's advice helped writer Julio Torres create a successful Papyrus sketch for SNL. Exceeding SNL's formula, the sketch stood out with a relatable premise and a funny character. Torres says: I think the humor comes not from making fun of him, but from seeing qualities in him that we can relate to.

According to writer Julio Torres, a piece of advice from Emma Stone helped inspire Ryan Gosling's incredible "Papyrus" sketch on Saturday Night Live. The sketch, which follows Gosling as a man haunted by the "Papyrus" font that's used for the Avatar franchise, was a breakout success for the long-running NBC show. It even inspired a sequel when Gosling hosted SNL earlier this year, with the follow-up expanding on the original and incorporating Avatar: The Way of Water.

Ryan Gosling might be one of the most acclaimed A-list stars of his generation, but the actors box office performance has been surprisingly uneven throughout his career. Hits like Drive, La La Land, and Crazy Stupid Love proved that Gosling can take a low or mid-budget movie and make it a massive blockbuster. However, 2018s First Man, 2017s Blade Runner 2049, and 2016s underrated cult classic The Nice Guys all underperformed.

The Many Times Ryan Gosling Was Hilarious Beyond Barbie and The Fall Guy
Image
Ryan Gosling is living his best life these days. Or certainly his funniest. After earning an Academy Award nomination purely based on his ability to persuasively turn “Kenergy” into a noun in last summer’s Barbie, he brought that pure, uncut Ken stuff to the Oscar stage. No, not by winning the prize, but by taking home the hearts and minds of the internet with an epic performance of “I’m Just Ken.”

In hindsight, the spectacle of it all might be viewed as a turning point in his career as audiences embrace the guy who seemed so stoic and tortured in the 2010s—with his understated leading roles in Drive, Blade Runner 2049, Blue Valentine, and First Man—as actually a great comedy talent. His next studio vehicle, The Fall Guy, is in theaters now, and we can vouch for it being a breezy, lighthearted entertainment given life by...

The 16 Best Ryan Gosling Movies, from ‘The Fall Guy’ and ‘Drive’ to ‘Barbie’ and ‘Blade Runner 2049’
Image
[Editor’s note: this list was originally published in July 2023, and has since been updated.]

Ryan Gosling has that Ken-ergy. He’s Ken out of Ken. He’s Kendlessly Kentertaining. He’s the Kend all, be all. He’s the Kenvy of other actors. He’s impossible to not Kenjoy. He’s more, much more, than Kenough.

Gosling has had a long, fruitful career, but it’s safe to say that he’s never committed to a role as hard as he’s committed to the bit that was the “Barbie” press tour. Every interview and soundbite the Canadian actor gave in the publicity run for Greta Gerwig’s take on the iconic Mattel toy line has launched meme after meme, as he’s spoken about the importance of telling the tragic story of Barbie’s beau Ken. It’s a commitment that’s only seconded by his performance in the film itself, where he goes for broke with a hilarious, oblivious, and often sweet...

Ryan Gosling Turns Down Roles That Are Too Psychologically Twisted for the Sake of Eva Mendes, Their Kids and ‘What’s Going to Be Best for All of Us’
Image
Ryan Gosling said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal Magazine that he is no longer picking roles that are too psychologically twisted in order to maintain his mental health for the sake of his family. The Oscar nominee has two children with partner and fellow actor Eva Mendes. Gosling’s recent movies, the comedy “Barbie” and the action romance “The Fall Guy,” certainly reflect this career choice.

“I don’t really take roles that are going to put me in some kind of dark place,” Gosling told the publication. “This moment is what I feel like trying to read the room at home and feel like what is going to be best for all of us. The decisions I make, I make them with Eva and we make them with our family in mind first.”

“I think ‘La La Land’ was the first,” Gosling added about when he started to shift his career.

Ryan Gosling Reflects on Long Film Career, From Being an Astronaut and a Getaway Driver to Becoming “A 70-Year-Old Crotchless Doll”
Image
Ryan Gosling was honored by the Santa Barbara Film Festival on Saturday night, and used his speech to reflect on his long journey to becoming Ken.

Receiving the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film at a dinner in Santa Barbara, Gosling mused how “up until this point, I’ve only ever thought about just how much cinema had done for me, I had never really thought about what I’ve done for cinema.”

He recalled how in third grade he had a swearing problem (joking, “I didn’t think it was a problem but my teachers did and I just thought they were being a bunch of uptight mother— wait.”) and struggled in school, until one of his teachers planned weekly visits to the library and made a deal that for every book the actor read he could rent a movie from the library’s collection.

10 Movie Love Interests That Are Actually Terrible People
Image
Just because characters end up with their love interest in movies doesn't mean they are great people, as some romantic partners are actually terrible individuals. Love stories in movies don't always work, and some of the best films feature characters who don't end up together, while others may end up with partners who are flawed or toxic. Popular romantic films like The Notebook and Twilight depict problematic behaviors, such as stalking, blackmailing, and manipulative actions, which wouldn't be considered romantic in real life.

Just because they end up with the love of their life doesn't mean that they are great, as some romantic interests are actually terrible people. Romances have always been an integral part of storytelling. There's an entire genre of films dedicated to the topic, that even gets broken down into different segments depending on the movie's overall narrative. Even in other genres such as action-adventures and thrillers,...

Remastered Talking Heads Documentary Becomes IMAX King
Image
The Talking Heads were one of the most successful bands in their heyday. From the late 70s to 80s, the David Byrne-led group produced popular music with an alternative, New Wave twist. The documentary, Stop Making Sense, was about their “Speaking in Tongues” Tour, which completely changed the way that concerts and tours are performed. Now, 30 years later, it has been re-released and remastered for IMAX by A24, first as a live-streamed event, and then in regular viewing times.

The Wrap reports that Stop Making Sense officially became IMAX’s best-selling live event ever. The remastered version of the concert documentary was released this past Monday, September 12th. The event garnered $640,839 of same-day revenue, spread across over 25 sold-out theaters in the United States, and the IMAX theater in London.
