At the beginning of the "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode "Wedding Bell Blues," the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise is gearing up for a grand gala to celebrate the centennial of the formation of the Federation. The Enterprise has been under repair for the previous few months after a conflagration with the Gorn, so everyone has had time to relax. Spock (Ethan Peck), however, finds himself apprehensive; although he is a Vulcan devoted to emotionlessness, he finds that he is still harboring feelings for Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush), currently away from the Enterprise on vacation. Chapel is due to return any day now, though, and Spock, perhaps illogically, is nervous. 

To distract himself, he decides to prepare for the gala by learning to dance. Luckily, his co-worker, chief of security Lieutenant LA'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), has extensive dance training, and is more than willing to give him lessons.

With music biopics being one of the few seemingly sure bets out there these days, you’d think a Madonna biopic would be a an obvious choice for any self-respecting Hollywood studio looking for an easy win.

Iconic star with a wild past? Check. Incredible back catalogue of music? Check. An inspiring, feminist story for marketing teams to get stuck into and audiences to rally around? Check.

Yet years into the process of trying to get a film of her life made, Madonna is reportedly giving up on the idea.

Costume designer Arianne Phillips and director James Mangold have worked together several times since the late 1990s, including on Mangold’s Oscar-winning films “Girl, Interrupted” and “Walk the Line.” But “A Complete Unknown” marks the first time in 14 years that Phillips, a three-time Oscar nominee, and Mangold have been credited together on a project. “The truth is, this was a bit of a journey getting here,” Phillips tells Gold Derby.

Set in the early 1960s, as a young Bob Dylan (played in the film by Timothee Chalamet) comes to New York and enters the nascent stages of superstardom, “A Complete Unknown” is a film Mangold has tried to mount for years. He first spoke to Phillips about the feature in 2019. But the coronavirus pandemic, Mangold’s commitments to “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and Chalamet’s role in the “Dune” franchise kept pushing the start date back on the calendar.

It's hard to imagine "Deadpool & Wolverine" star Ryan Reynolds at a loss for words, but the actor was apparently pretty starstruck when he met the Queen of Pop, Madonna. In an interview with Radio Andy on SiriusXM, Reynolds and "Deadpool" franchise director Shawn Levy shared their experience consulting with the music legend, and apparently she had a bit of really sound advice for the duo.

A mixed history in cinema seems to be counting against Madonna as she publicly discusses disagreements with studios over her biopic.

In a world where musical biopics seemed to get commissioned with greater ease than any other genre you’d think a Madonna movie would be an instant green light. After all, she’s an icon of pop with an incredibly interesting life story and a back catalogue of hits to rival any musical biopic that has come before.

The project did make it into some kind of development back in 2020, with Madonna and Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody working on an early version. Then Erin Cressida Wilson was drafted in to co-write alongside Madonna before the project was scrapped by Universal.

After contacting the Queen of Pop for permission to use her 1989 single ‘Like a Prayer’ in Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds revealed she “gave a great note” for the sequence that quickly ended up in the final cut.

“Also, let’s preface it with the fact that — Madonna doesn’t just license the song, and particularly that song has not been licensed,” he said on SiriusXM. “So it was a big deal to ask for it and certainly a bigger deal to use it… We went over and met with her and showed her how it was being used and where and why.”

After being cast as the Material Girl pop icon in June 2022, the film was shelved by Universal in January 2023. Madonna, who co-wrote, produced, and is set to direct her own life story for the big screen, recently announced a world tour.

“I don’t want to tell too much,” Garner said to Entertainment Tonight. “I’m going to keep things…fingers crossed.”

Garner reportedly endured an intense audition process to land the role of Madonna. The so-called boot camp was also attended by Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie, Odessa Young, and Emma Laird, with singers Bebe Rexha and Sky Ferreira also having previously been considered for the lead part. Julia Fox was rumored to be cast as Madonna’s longtime friend and fellow actress Debi Mazar.

Breakout “House of Gucci” star Madalina Ghenea is set to lead shark survival thriller “Deep Fear” alongside Ed Westwick.

Ghenea, who plays classic movie star Sophia Loren in the fashion film, will take on the role of accomplished yachtswoman Naomi who embarks on a solo trip through the Caribbean to meet her boyfriend Jackson (played by Westwick) in Grenada.

In what seems to be an unprecedented creative move, the pop icon will direct a film about her life and career — one that’s been heavily teased on her social media accounts, through script sessions with her Oscar-winning co-writer Diablo Cody.

That Madonna, whose staggering five-decade career has seen countless musical reinventions and a run at filmmaking and acting, would direct her own journey from New York City’s slums to the heights of global stardom is beyond rare. Arianne Phillips is now nominated for an Oscar for Best Costume Design for her work on “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” a film she almost wasn’t a part of due to her involvement with another film. She was slated to do the costumes for a Patty Hearst biopic directed by James Mangold that ended up being canceled, which freed her up to do Quentin Tarantino‘s ode to 1960s Hollywood. “It was a twist of fate,” Phillips says in a new interview with Gold Derby, and it was certainly a delightful twist of fate for her as a major fan of Tarantino’s films. “To be in this position was something I didn’t imagine could actually happen.” Watch the exclusive video interview with Phillips above.

Taylor Swift and Andrew Lloyd Webber didn’t make the cut for their original song “Beautiful Ghosts” from “Cats” when the motion picture academy announced its shortlist for songwriters. And the reviews for the film have been, shall we say, not great. But Swift could still get her revenge at the Golden Globes, where she and Webber did earn a nom for “Ghosts.” And this isn’t the first time the Hollywood Foreign Press has nominated her, so this may be the time they decide to give her the win.

The country ingenue-turned-pop superstar has been nominated twice before at the Globes. First she contended for “Safe and Sound,” which she co-wrote with The Civil Wars and T-Bone Burnett for the film “The Hunger Games” (2012). She ended up winning a Grammy for that composition, but the Globe went to Adele‘s “Skyfall,” which went on to win the Oscar too.

Arianne Phillips is an Academy Awards contender this year for her period work as the costume designer on Quentin Tarantino’s 1969-set love letter to the Tinseltown of yore, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” She’s been twice-nominated before, for her work on Madonna’s “W.E.” and James Mangold’s “Walk the Line,” and has worked with other auteurs from Miloš Forman to Tom Ford.

But as revealed during a recent panel at the Key West Film Festival, moderated by IndieWire Executive Editor and Chief Film Critic Eric Kohn, being a costume designer hasn’t always been an easy ride. During the conversation, Phillips pointed out a below-the-line pay disparity that affects her behind-the-scenes craft — a trend she’s looking to change.

“Costume designers are not considered a creative position in the film industry. We’re considered a ‘technical’ position, and we’re fighting that right now,” she said.

That is true for most categories, but not always true for Best Costume Design. That wonderful craft award, oft celebrated here at The Film Experience, is less dependent on Best Picture buzz as other craft prizes. Let’s not forget the sole nomination likes of The Tempest, W.E. and The Invisible Woman.

On a Sunday morning in November 2017, Oscar-nominated costume designer and stylist Arianne Phillips pulled up to CAA for a meeting to which she’d been invited without receiving any other information.

“Reese Witherspoon was there at that meeting, and I know her because we worked together on ‘Walk the Line,’” says Phillips, who’s also worked on “Nocturnal Animals,” “W.E.” and “A Single Man,” as well as with Madonna for more than 20 years. “She told me at that time, it hadn’t been announced, that the actresses were going to wear black in solidarity [to the 2018 Globes], and would I create a pin or something for the men who’d be supporting to wear?”

Warner Bros. announced last week that acclaimed director Ava DuVernay will be coming on board to direct the studio’s “New Gods,” based on the DC Comics series of the same name. The project will be the beginning of a new universe to build, and they’ve picked one of the buzziest people for the job. DuVernay, who most recently directed the much-anticipated “A Wrinkle In Time,” will join Patty Jenkins of last year’s “Wonder Woman” in the female superhero director category. If first you don’t succeed, try and try again. That’s clearly the motto for pop icon Madonna when it comes to her directing career. She initially experimented with filmmaking with the little seen indie “Filth and Wisdom” in 2008 and then made an impressive (in context) step forward with the problematic “W.E.” in 2011. “Remember Me” from “Coco” is the favorite to win the Best Original Song Oscar, but it needs to watch out for “This Is Me” from “The Greatest Showman” — not just because it’s a huge hit and NBC is using it as its Winter Olympics soundtrack, but because it’s the Golden Globe champ. Before you scream “The Globes and Oscars never pick the same song winner!”, know that they have agreed the past three years and their split choices are a relatively new phenomenon.

The Globes gave out its first song award to the title track from “Town Without Pity” (1961) — the Oscars went with “Moon River” from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” — but didn’t start handing out the prize annually until three years later. Oscar Isaac is making his way from indie flicks to sure-to-be blockbuster hits with roles in 2014’s A Most Violent Year, writer-director J.C. Chandor’s Oscar hopeful, and J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is slated for a December 2015 release.

A Most Violent Year features Isaac as a husband and father trying to run an honest business in New York City in 1981, which is statistically the most violent year in the city’s history. The film opened AFI Fest and was recently voted best film by the National Board of Review. Isaac tied with Michael Keaton (Birdman) for best actor.

I was out for drinks with two friends the other night (Hi, Sue & Jordan!) and somehow the conversation turned to Madonna -- I can't remember how it got there -- and the Best Actress for Evita Golden Globe was discussed. 'Her one shot at an Oscar' ...but then of course she wasn't nominated. (1996 was an overstuffed year in Best Actress of course but even if it hadn't been, The Academy probably would have resisted.) But of course it wasn't her only shot at Oscar. They've snubbed her repeatedly in that Best Original Song category though two songs she sang but didn't write won the actual gold man ("Sooner or Later" from Dick Tracy by Stephen Sondheim and "You Must Love Me" from Evita by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber).
