Arrogant hotel manager Gavin Nichols (Charlie Hunnam) walks onto a ledge on the rooftop of a building to commit suicide. However, Gavin's suicide attempt alerts the police and police detective Hollis Lucetti (Terrance Howard) who is having a bad day is reluctantly sent out to deal with the situation and goes up on the roof to talk to Gavin. On the roof, Hollis learns Gavin is not committing suicide out of choice and claims that if he doesn't do it, someone he knows will die and he tells Hollis his story: Gavin recently befriended his new neighbours Joe (Patrick Wilson) a born again Christian and his beautiful wife Shana (Liv Tyler) and was stunned one day when Shana appeared at the hotel when he works for employment which Gavin accepted. As Gavin and Shana begin to get know each other, Gavin becomes hypocritical of Joe and berates Joe of his religious believes and his choice to become a born again Christian resulting in a heated argument. Gavin apologizes to Shana for his behaviour and Gavin and Shana begin a passionate sexual affair. However, Joe follows and spies on them and is hurt and upset when he learns about their affair. Joe confronts Gavin and accuses him of being a sinner and Shana for being a adultress and Joe decides to challenge Gavin over his beliefs and and aims at a gun at him and Joe demands that Gavin goes up onto the roof of a building and that he is to stand on a ledge and wait until noon and if he doesn't jump off the ledge at noon and take his own life he will kill Shana whom he is holding captive in one of the rooms at the hotel and after hearing Gavin's story and realizing Gavin is going to jump because he loves her, Hollis desperately pleads with Gavin not to jump off the building and with time running out, Gavin pleads with Hollis to forgive his wife who fathered his children with another man and that he has to do it otherwise Joe will kill Shana and as the police goes to the hotel to find Joe and Shana, Gavin makes his fateful choice.
