You've seen it before, but it's still fun.

Look, this movie is a whole lot like others of it's kind, ehm Goosebumps. So what? You can like them both. This is a fun, family Halloween movie that does better than most and is worth a watch.

The performances are good and most of the visual effects look pretty cool. It's got a little lag in the middle, but it's still not horribly grinding.

It's creepy enough but still fun and most of the humor lands. It's not going to do anything you haven't already seen before, but if you're like me and always looking for new, quality family flicks to add to your Halloween watchlist, you could do a whole lot worse.

Stupid but entertaining

This is definitely a film for the younger generation (with adult supervision), but saying that, I actually enjoyed it. I watched it with no expectations and I'm glad there were no reviews that could potentially put me off watching this before giving it a chance.

They matched the new family to the area, perfectly. Part of the film incorporates father and daughter bonding. There are a few chuckles along the way. It's entertaining, but stupid. Hardly anything is realistic, the graphics aren't great, but the actors played their parts, brilliantly. On a number of occasions throughout the film, the colour of the skin was mentioned and also white privilege. There was no need for it and it has no place in a film that is meant to be fun.

I enjoyed it.

Probably not the best person to write a movie review. I watch a lot of movies but people seem to be much pickier than myself.

I enjoyed the movie. It is a funny movie. It's just a fun Halloween movie. Doesn't try to be serious or push some hidden message. Just a story with some humor and some action. If you are looking for something deeper this isn't your movie. If you just want a entertaining movie then try this one.

Marlon Wayans is his usual self. Self-deprecating with flashes of sass and comebacks.

Don't let the "professional" critics ruin the movie for you. Not sure anyone reads or cares what they think. Try it out. If it isn't your liking then okay. I'm glad I didn't listen to them and tried it.

Surprisingly entertaining...

As I sat down to watch the 2022 Netflix family movie "The Curse of Bridge Hollow", then I wasn't really haboring much of any high expectations for the movie. Why? Well, it being a Halloween-based family movie with Marlon Wayans in a leading role, just didn't really come off as being all that impressive to me.

But still, since I hadn't already seen "The Curse of Bridge Hollow", then I opted to sit down and watch what writers Todd Berger, Robert Rugan and John R. Morey had to offer. And I have to say that I was definitely entertained by the storyline in the movie, and it turned out to be quite an enjoyable and impressive movie actually.

Forget all about this being just another run-of-the-mill cheesy Halloween movie, because director Jeff Wadlow deliveres a wholesome family movie with "The Curse of Bridge Hollow". And it definitely has potential to be a true Halloween classic.

The acting performances in the movie were fair enough, and even Marlon Wayans were good here. I will actually say that he is well-suited for movies of this kind, not action movies and such kind.

Now, something that impressed me in "The Curse of Bridge Hollow" was the special effects. Wow. Just wow. Talk about having great special effects and CGI in a Halloween-based family movie, it was just spectacular. And it served the movie phenomenally well, as it brought so much atmosphere to the movie and definitely helped to cement the spooky Halloween feeling.

If you enjoy the Halloween season and watch movies with a Halloween-based theme together with the family, then you most certainly have to check out "The Curse of Bridge Hollow".

My rating of "The Curse of Bridge Hollow" lands on a seven out of ten stars.

Wanted to like it but it's not the family comedy you are hoping for

I really wanted to like this. I was hoping for something cheesy, fun family movie night goodness. This was dumb, with wooden acting and all the laughs are in the trailer and they're sparse at best. But the most ANNOYING part for me?

The racial jokes. They're not even funny or appropriate. And confusing for my kids because we would never talk like that. They say "crazy white woman" and "black man" several times. Like, we get it. You're a black family from Brooklyn moving to the burbs and this quaint town couldn't have possibly ever met a black family before? It's so cringey.

I miss John Hughes. He could have made a great Halloween movie that was like home alone or even Christmas vacation. This was lazy garbage. Don't waste your time.

This movie sucks

Why does the dad feel the need to constantly make stupid racist comments?? Why is some of the acting the worst I've seen in my life?? Why is the stereotyping so bad?? This is a horrible movie for kids to watch... it encourages bullying your child bc they don't agree with you. That is not something that should be joked about or even referenced in "family friendly" shows/movies. It's disgusting.

Dear Todd, Robert or John, please stop interpreting your insecurities and doubts into hateful characters if you're going to be creating content rated low enough for children to appropriately watch. I wanted so badly to like this movie, but unfortunately I feel nothing but disgust for how hateful the father character was written to be.

Do better

Sincerely, An extremely concerned viewer.

A fun family halloween comedy

This movie was fun. Sure you could give comparrisons to the goosbumps films. But atleast the idea is something thats not played to ofter, halloween decorations coming to life. When their family has to move to a new house, they dont know what is wating for them. The three family members are. Priah fergurson, who I could see being an up and coming star, marlon wayans, who I havent seen for a long time along with kelly rowland, so it was nice to see them both in a film and their characters were played well. The next door neighbour was fun played here by rob riggle and his creativie walking dead display. Finnaly we have the mayor and the principe played by lauren lapkus and john michael higgins. Both good in their own right and brought a little more humor to the film when they were on screen. I loved the way the haunted decorations were made. A mix of very good cgi and stunt actors from what I could tell. Overall a fun movie with a good cast to get you in the halloween spirit.

Nothing special here, just an unfunny mess of familiar tropes

I should probably admit up front that I'm not a big fan of Halloween and all the "spooky" mumbo-jumbo that we are bombarded with every October. Needless to say, that means I have extremely low expectations when sitting through Halloween films for kids. When my wife convinced me to watch The Curse of Bridge Hollow, I'm sad to say it lived down to those expectations. The story here is extremely straightforward and feels familiar, like one you've seen in a hundred other movies like this one. It's the familiar trope of an evil spirit brought to town by an ancient curse, and a magical spell that must be cast to stop the attack. In fact, it has a lot in common with Hocus Pocus, so fans of that movie might have a good time with this one as well. I'm not one of those people, but I'm married to one.

My biggest struggle with this movie is that it lacks humor. It is fighting for some laughs, and only got me chuckling a few times. Most of the humor that worked for me was exclusively because I like Rob Riggle's goofy personality, and some of John Michael Higgins' schtick. Nothing Marlon Wayans did was even slightly humorous to me. Priah Ferguson plays his daughter and she ends up being more of an annoying nag than anything else. I don't really understand why we're expected to laugh at Kelly Rowland making vegan treats that everyone finds disgusting, or at the paranormal kids club, or even at Lauren Lapkus and her exaggerated accent. The film has some slightly scary images (in particular some homicidal clowns) but it's not enough to satisfy real horror fans, just enough to make it a tough sell for young kids. I can't really recommend The Curse of Bridge Hollow, but I will say if it looks like something you'll like then you're probably right, and if it looks bad to you then just skip it.

A great Halloween kids film!

I really can't believe all of these bad ratings. This was a great kids Halloween film and it was actually scary in parts and I'm an adult. There were some laugh out loud scenes as well as good special effects and jumps. It is an all around entertaining family film. It definitely exceeded my expectations. Marlon Wayans was great in the lead and had great chemistry with the actress who plays his daughter and of course his wife. Scenes with spiders and clowns literally were creepy. I jumped in several parts and was surprised by that given it is a children's film. Those who are bashing it need to lighten up. What did you expect....an Oscar worthy film?

It's that time of year!

Enjoyed this movie!

With that said the movie felt family friendly, but might scare younger kids a bit.. especially when decorations, comes to life around town.

Has the same"feel"of Hocus Pocus if that helps a parent decide,if their child is ready to watch this.

Was this clichéd? Sure. However nothing that ruins it or feels overly cheesy & several parts did bring a giggle or two.

Loved all the Halloween decorations, costumes & movie location which fits perfectly for this time of year.

Cast & acting was decent plus cinematography was nicely done.

Something worth checking out! A popcorn weekend movie flick, with a fun-filled storyline.

Campy, ridiculous, and based on a well established formula, The Curse of Bridge Hollow is exactly the kind of movie you've been sold and that's not a bad thing

The Gordon family consisting of science teacher father Howard (Marlon Wayans), aspiring vegan baker Emily (Kelly Rowland) and their 14 year-old daughter Sydney "Syd" (Priah Ferguson) have recently moved from Brooklyn to the small town of Bridge Hollow. Bridge Hollow is a town that goes all out for Halloween with the local legend of Stingy Jack a wicked man who was killed by the town residents when the town was first founded said to haunt the town waiting to take revenge upon the descendants of those who've wronged him. Syd is unenthused about the move but intrigued by the town's Halloween spirit, while Howard wants nothing to do with Halloween writing the town's residents off as weirdos much to Syd's annoyance. Syd meets local high school students Ramona (Abi Monterey), Jamie (Holly J. Barrett), and Mario (Myles Vincent Perez) who together are the High School's paranormal society who become friends with Syd and tell her the house she moved into was in fact the home of the gypsy spellcaster who captured Stingy Jack. Syd finds an old jack o'lantern using a Ouija app and against her father's wishes gets into the Halloween spirit including lighting the lantern, but the lantern unleashes a curse that spreads through the town giving life to all the elaborate Halloween decorations. Now Howard and Syd must try and find a way to stop the curse before Stingy Jack makes Halloween last forever and takes over the world.

The Curse of Bridge Hollow is the latest vehicle for Marlon Wayans for streaming service Netflix with Wayans and the service having previously collaborated on Naked and Sextuplets. The movie was announced in 2021 as an untitled Halloween adventure comedy penned by Rob Rugan, Todd Berger, and John R. Morey who have experience on various family projects and sitcoms to their credits. In terms of the kind of movie this is, pretty much everything you've seen in the trailer is indicative of the kind of family Halloween fantasy comedy formula you've seen in things ranging from staples of the genre like Hocus Pocus, 1995's Casper, Ernest Scared Stupid, or Nightmare Before Christmas to even more modern takes like the recent Columbia produced Goosebumps films. This "Halloween run amok" type film is well trodden ground but it's revisited so often because it's an entertaining formula if done correctly. While I don't think The Curse of Bridge Hollow ranks with the best examples of this type of sub-genre, it delivers exactly what it promises and for this time of year that's exactly what you want.

Priah Ferguson is solid as the lead and having proven herself on the Netflix hit series Stranger Things it's little wonder she's able to show natural screen presence and charisma. The movie also boasts some fun production design with the town of Bridge Hollow dressed up in all manner of Halloween iconography with zombies, witches, aliens, mummies, spiders etc., and when they come to life to wreak havoc upon the time it leads to some amusing set pieces. Jeff Wadlow of Kick-Ass 2 and Never Back Down directs the film and he handles the action beats much better here than he did in Kick-Ass 2 with a haunted maze segment in the local high school a particularly fun sequence from how it's shot to the crazed clowns chasing them (of course there are killer clowns, why wouldn't there be). Marlon Wayans has always been hit/miss for me with his movies with his filmography with a cursory glimpse at his filmography not exactly inspiring much confidence, but from his work on In Living Color and certain small comic scenes from his filmography I know he can be funny. Wayans does perfectly fine in this role and dials back some of the more grating aspects of his humor seen in films like White Chicks and Little Man but his delivery does sometimes feel like he's playing a caricature of an uptight dad rather than an uptight dad.

The only criticisms I can think of aren't exactly deal breakers especially since most audience members who see this movie will know exactly what they're in for. The Curse of Bridge Hollow follows the conventions of this genre to a "t" and it does go through them in exactly the fashion you expect them to. I think the script maybe relies a little too heavily on Howard not believing the things that are going on, but not to the point it annoyed me. The movie also doesn't really have a "villain" as Stingy Jack doesn't have a voice and is more a force of nature characterized by red energy taking control of Halloween decorations so that seems like a bit of a lost opportunity not to get a serious actor to give a really hammed up performance as Jack and give the villain some personality. The movie also has a running gag of how much Emily's vegan confections taste terrible and while I say "running gag" it's honestly more of a limping gag because you just feel sorry for Emily during these scenes.

The Curse of Bridge Hollow is exactly the kind of movie you expect it to be, and I think for this time of year that's not bad. I always look forward to this type of moving simply because I grew up on films like this and it does take me back to that time in my youth of eagerly watching various Halloween films and specials before and after my excursions around the neighborhood collecting candy and sort of adding to the ritual. I can't say for sure I'll revisit this film, but it does actually deliver on what it promises.

Disappointed

This movie was barely tolerable, primarily due to the fact that Priahs performance was awful. No emotion or expression. Monotone and forced. She was good in stranger things but fell short in this film. Kelly Rowland was subpar. Marlons acting was fine but his character wasnt likeable. Dont even get me started on the mayors accent🙄. This is basically something to watch when youve finished all your halloween favorites, if you remember it exists because lets be honest, its forgettable. Which sucks because the potential was so there, the plot was good but the characters just werent strong enough to support.

A Good watch for the whole family over weekend

I believe the title i just wrote for this review should be sufficient and i stand by every word. It is a complete family movie, which you can comfortably watch with your whole family, with kids of all ages.

It is fun, it is funny, it is having some thrill and carries a bit of horror. Finally Netflix producing one for the entire home.

Marlon Wayans, at his very good, his comic timings and expressions are as always good.

From critic point of views, obviously you will find a hundred area of improvement, but for once, there is no slur used, no offensive language, no unnecessary teenage drama and above all no rainbows in this one too.

Get your kids, sit back and enjoy a good flick.

The Curse of Bridge Hollow (2022)

A big city family moves into a quiet, suburban community during October. They begin to feel like outsiders as they adjust to the new lifestyle of a town that celebrates Halloween like a fun-spirited cult. The daughter accidentally unleashes an ancient, evil entity called Stingy Jack who cursed the town long ago. It's up to the father and daughter, to overcome their disagreeable relationship and defeat the curse of Stingy Jack together.

It's an enjoyable family Halloween movie, with a stupid plot that revolves around a father that refuses to let his family participate in Halloween, in the name of science?? Lame!! Anyway, Marlon Wayans keeps this stubborn dad act for a little too long which drags the movie down for me, but the charm is kept alive by the spooky concept and acts from Priah Ferguson, Lauren Lapkus, Rob Riggle, and Kelly Rowland. It's cute, harmless fun, for the average Halloween fan.

Keep racism out of kids films

Within the first 5 minutes, critical race theory mentioned at least 3 times.

The first white characters where stupid and actually referred to by their colour.

You don't have to have an adult male shouting at a child in Halloween costume 'Never jump out at a black man'. It isn't a joke and this is one of the more subtle scenes. Race seems to be a constant theme throughout this film.

Why does netflix feel the need to indoctrinate children with CRT in what should be a light hearted kids holiday film.

Not OK.

Take out the casual racism and you have a family moving into a new neighbourhood resulting in the child making new friends, the Father staring a new job.

It is set around Halloween so the family (who don't celebrate haloween) have to deal with the fact that the town they have moved into are into Halloween in a big way.

Not that fun

I mean I was expecting a fun Halloween comedy horror film. But nope. It was so boring.

The acting is sub-par. The dad character is unlikeable and...I dunno...but Marlon Wayans seems miscast. The family has no chemistry with each other. Emotions feel fake and unbelievable. The story itself is badly written. It wasn't even fun or hilarious, which I think is the main purpose of the film. Honestly it's so dull, I found myself using my phone instead while watching it.

Plot: A family move from New York to a small town and they unknowingly unleash an evil spirit or something and the spirit kinda wreaks havoc and stuff to the town and makes Halloween decorations alive.

I honestly do not recommend this movie.

Gives you the feels of growing up in the 90s

I actually laughed out loud several times. Some of those times were because of a couple nicely done millennial throw backs like "You don't know how to ride a bike?! ... I was taught books could take me wherever I needed to go!" It has the feel of movies from the 80s and 90s, like Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown. But this has updated references that probably resonate with gen z (I'm speculating here, I'm a single millennial female... and gosh apparently our fashion is back!) It's not overly cheesy nor does it have what some may call "wokeness". It's just wholesome, family-friendly, spooky fun! It was a fun watch when I wanted to get into some spooky szn vibes without actually being scared.

Could do without hints of racism

It definitely could do without the hints of racism towards white people. Would have been a way better movie. Found a movie foul four times in one of the first scenes of the family pulling into their new home. Girl was wearing 2 hoop earrings then one then 2 then 1 then 2 all within same scene. Otherwise it was a cute movie. Just sad Hollywood feels the need to not only keep racism alive but to plant it in our children also with subtle hints like "white privilege" because they lived in a nice neighborhood. Try "they worked just like us to get where they did" instead. It is ideals like that that keep this country divided. Do us and yourselves a favor and keep your opinions out of our kids movies!

Good Halloween movie to watch with kids

RATED 8/10 Language: English Source: Netflix RECOMMENDED

First of all, this is horror movie for kids at the same time it is not childish. Watchable for adults and recommended for kids.

The cast is good and story is OK. The CG work is adequate for the movie. The story is bit templated and predictable but it was overcome by the entertaining screenplay. There is no dull moment and I really loved the skeleton fight sequence.

There is no scary sequences and beware of the arachnophobia. Best movie to enjoy with family in weekend.

Typical Hollywood

Tried watching this with my two sons. I thought it sounded like a fun family movie to watch with the kids. One of the first lines in the movie is white privilege? Keep your critical race theory out of children and family movies. Absolutely ridiculous.

Outside of the racism the movie was overall meh. The humor was kind of bland and hard for a young kid to really understand. For adults the humor just seemed pretty dry and bland. The parts that were to be scary really wasn't very scary. They could've done a better job making the creatures a bit more scary looking. It's a shame movies with great potential are ruined like this with lack or creativity and politics.
