Unfrosted may have landed at the top of Netflix rankings, but its viewership figures tell a different story. Over its first three days, the film was viewed for 11.3 million hours globally, but falls short compared to other Netflix originals. Have you noticed that a lot of science-fiction movies haven't felt so fictional of late? Oh sure, the genre has always been about our real-world problems in the present day. Yet, as technology has caught up to our collective imaginations, a lot of would-be fantastical representations of the future have come to resemble our current hellscape but either slightly shinier and/or dingier and with A.I. that's capable of more than cranking out fake YouTube film trailer screencaps of men standing behind nude women. Even movies set thousands of years from now on distant planets tend to be about the all-too-topical concern of young white twinks embracing fascism (much to the dismay of their progressive girlfriends).
As dour and sometimes surreal as these movies are, they're also excellent vehicles for filmmakers to talk about the biggest issues of the day and, in doing so, perhaps make them feel just...

Code 8: Part II offers a fresh take on superheroes, diverging from Marvel and DC's overly optimistic tone. Audiences find it easy to connect with the characters and heavy topics addressed in both Code 8 and I Am Not Okay With This. A potential revival of I Am Not Okay With This could finally resolve the major cliffhanger from season 1, satisfying fans.
Netflix's new superhero movie sequel, Code 8: Part II, proves that a show canceled 4 years ago should get a revival. With the number of Marvel and DC movies and TV shows, superhero fatigue has grown immensely. The peppy, hopeful attitude in some of the MCU movies feels out of touch with today's world. Some modern additions like Black Panther have dealt with serious topics like racism. Additionally, subliminal messages in comic movies may allude to serious topics. However, everything getting fixed easily feels unrealistic.

Also among the Top 10 films were Spaceman, which held firm at No. 3 with 10.8M views, and Tyler Perry’s Mea Culpa, which ranked No. 5 with 5.1M views.
Over on the TV side of things, The Gentlemen took first place with 12.2M views. Avatar: The Last Airbender, which was recently renewed for two more seasons, stole second place with 9.1M views.

Code 8: Part II is the highly anticipated sequel to the first Netflix film, based on a short film from YouTube in 2016. The sequel brought back action and suspense, introducing new characters and setting up Code 8: Part III. The conclusion of Code 8: Part II leaves us eager for more, with the hope of furthering potential storylines and character developments.
One of the most interesting pieces of trivia regarding the science fiction franchise, aptly named Code 8, is that it all stemmed from a 10-minute short film released on YouTube in 2016. The next day, actor Robbie Amell (and his cousin Stephen) launched an Indiegogo campaign to transform the proof of concept teaser into a full-length feature film – and within three days, it worked. About five years after the initial movie was released on Netflix, Code 8: Part II came bustling onto the streaming platform.

Code 8: Part II, a sci-fi sequel by the Amell cousins, is a Netflix hit and paves the way for a trilogy. Fans' support made Part One and Part Two possible, and their viewership will determine if a third film is made. Based on the past week, it looks like that's the case. The film explores a gray area of ethics in a future where certain people have superpowers.
Stephen Amell and cousin Robbie Amell have another hit on their hands. Their sci-fi sequel, Code 8: Part II, has been at the very top of the Netflix charts since it was released on Feb. 28, even bringing the original Code 8 into the top 10 with it. That's an impressive feat for a franchise which began as a crowdfunded short film. We spoke with the Amells, and they were unflappable when asked about making Code 8 a trilogy with a third film.

Director Jeff Chan has teamed up with Robbie Amell and his cousin, Stephen Amell, again with a sequel to 2019's successful sci-fi thriller, Code 8. In Code 8: Part II, Connor (Robbie Amell) has just been released from doing a five-year stint in prison after taking the rap for the misdeeds of others, including Garrett (Stephen Amell), who recruited him to be part of his crew who use their superpowers to break the law. Chan doesn't waste any time reuniting the two as Garrett is waiting for Connor as he walks out of jail. Garrett has climbed the criminal ladder within the fictional Lincoln City and has become the boss of his own crew and wants Connor to rejoin the group, so they can rule the streets together. Initially, Connor tells Garrett to forget it as he has already done enough time for the crimes of other people, but soon...

Avatar: The Last Airbender strikes again.
The live-action Netflix series was once again on top of the TV list from February 26 to March 3 with 19.9M views in its first full week on the platform. That’s slightly down from last week, but still by far the most-watched series on the platform during this interval.
Avatar still has a bit of a long way to go before it would break into Netflix’s most popular TV list. So far, it’s racked up about 40M of the 83M views it would need to surpass The Witcher Season 1, which is currently sitting in 10th place. There is plenty of time to make that happen, though, since the series has a hefty 91-day premiere window to do so.
The top three series were the same as the previous week, though Love Is Blind and One Day swapped places. Season 6 of the reality dating...

So far, 2024 has seen everything from a cult favorite sci-fi comedy to a forgotten Alexander Skarsgård and Margot Robbie film hitting the Netflix Top 10 charts. Frankly, it was nice to see something other than Kevin Hart's "Lift" in the charts, as this most recent effort from the standup star seems to be the latest in an endless supply of middling streaming movies that somehow come to dominate Netflix's most-watched rankings. Thankfully, Hart has now departed the charts to make way for more popular films and TV on Netflix, and this month there's a particular Canadian franchise that's managed to capture viewers' attention.
"Code 8" started life as a 2016 short film that essentially served as a trailer for a larger crowd-funded project. That project finally arrived in 2019 in the form of a feature-length "Code 8" movie, a science fiction actioner written and directed by Jeff Chan. The film stars...

It’s unsurprising that Adam Sandler’s “Spaceman” is an immediate #1 for Netflix, but you have to wonder if the Sandler audience knew what it was getting: It’s the story of a long-distance solo astronaut who encounters loneliness and a mutant spider on his journey to Venus. Directed by Johan Renck, who won a DGA Award for his direction of HBO miniseries “Chernobyl,” it premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Reviews are mediocre and, per Netflix practice, it had token one-week showings in limited theaters. “Spaceman: debuted on the streamer March 1 and it will be interesting to see what kind of hold it maintains. For now, it’s another example of how Sandler uses his Netflix deal to expand his scope. (The film was produced by Channing Tatum’s Free Association.)

Robbie and Stephen Amell shine as Connor and Garrett, playing off each other well on screen. The robotic villains are impressively designed and add depth to the sci-fi narrative. Emotional storytelling falters; character reactions to key plot points feel misaligned and hollow.
With both actors prominently stepping into more diverse roles since their days on the CW Network as the DC-based characters of The Green Arrow and Firestorm, the Amell cousins have made quite a considerable name for themselves. Robert Amell is currently finding success in a fantastical comedy-drama over on Prime Video called Upload (which is currently awaiting a season four announcement). Meanwhile, Stephen Amell just recently dramatized his love for professional wrestling by starring in a two-season show over on Starz called Heels. Code 8: Part II is a purposefully gritty attempt to infuse traditional superhero tropes into a movie about societal corruption on a large scale. Although it tells a relatively basic story with familiar characters, the movie's thematic intentions and cinematic tricks are interesting enough to engage the audience over its well-paced run-time. Code 8: Part II takes the characters of the first film in a more ambitious direction, but the sequel's characterization lost some of the clarity found in the first film. The indie sci-fi has flashes of excellence and some genuinely interesting commentary on the current state of affairs in the world, but it doesn't excel beyond the tropes it strives to embody.
The original Code 8 was a surprisingly fun addition to the modern sci-fi genre, a crowd-funded film that took equal inspiration from super-powered narratives that were reimagined as street-level dramas, such as Daredevil. Both films focus...

The Code 8 movies are very similar to an X-Men story in that four percent of the population was mysteriously born with unique abilities. These "abnormalities," as the public calls them, are also known as "People With Powers" or PWPs. Unfortunately, they are heavily policed, exploited for work, abused, and scorned by the citizens, especially in Lincoln City.
The first movie had the electricity-generating Connor (played by Robbie Amell) getting caught up in a gang, hoping to raise money and save his ill mother. He committed a lot of sins along the way, but he eventually found his humanity again.

The storyline highlights how individuals with mutant powers seeking employment in the manufacturing sector face discrimination from the Lincoln City Police Department’s (Lcpd) new robotic officers known as Guardians. These Guardians are deployed to combat powered criminals, but their automated lethality escalates beyond control.
