Sydney Sweeney Boxing Movie ‘Christy’ Sets November Release From Black Bear
Image
Black Bear is set to theatrically release “Christy,” starring Sydney Sweeney, Ben Foster, Merritt Wever and Katy O’Brian, the company announced on Thursday.

After having its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, it will be released in theaters nationwide on Nov. 7, serving as the inaugural film of Black Bear’s U.S. theatrical distribution slate.

The biopic, directed by Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner David Michôd, features a career-defining transformation by Sweeney into boxing legend Christy Martin.

“We’re thrilled about the upcoming release of Christy, a moving portrait of resilience and defiance from visionary filmmaker David Michôd,” Benjamin Kramer, Black Bear President of U.S. Distribution, said in a statement.

Black Bear picks TIFF premiere ‘Christy’ starring Sydney Sweeney as first US release
Image
Black Bear’s fledgling US distribution venture has picked David Michôd’s boxing biopic Christy starring Sydney Sweeney as its first film and has scheduled a nationwide release on November 7. The drama gets its world premiere here at Toronto International Film Festival on Friday.

Christy went into TIFF technically as a sales title, however Thursday’s announcement was not entirely unexpected, given that Black Bear financed the film, is one of the producers, and handles international sales on the film.

UTA Independent Film Group and AC Independent co-represented US rights and negotiated the deal with Black Bear on behalf of the filmmaking team

Will new buyers spark a return to a robust deal flow at TIFF?
Image
US independent distributors have a lot on their minds heading into the 50th anniversary edition of Toronto International Film Festival, when their early fall festival appetite will come under scrutiny.

The theatrical space remains challenging. Few buyers have the wherewithal to compete with Hollywood majors and streamers, especially as platforms are said to be low-balling pay 1 and pay 2 licence fees that can help theatrical distributors afford minimum guarantees and robust release commitments.

Yet there are grounds for cautious optimism. Resourceful distributors continue to adapt and board projects earlier in the lifecycle to better compete with deep-pocketed rivals.

Attention to downstream revenue can be lucrative,...

TIFF’s (Unofficial) Market Hot List Features Angelina Jolie, Sydney Sweeney, and Chris Evans
Image
Unlike Cannes or Berlin, Toronto has never been a market-first festival. But ahead of the launch of the official TIFF market next year, Toronto is looking to boost its industry credentials, positioning itself as the go-to for finished films — particularly mainstream English-language fare — without domestic distribution.

“Given the uncertainty in the movie exhibition space right now, [Toronto’s] going to give us a real snapshot of what the people who release movies think can work in the marketplace,” says Steven Soderbergh, who brings his latest, The Christophers, to TIFF without a distributor. “There’s no better barometer of what’s happening than a bunch of people who have to put movies out into theaters, making decisions about what they think can succeed.”

With prestige titles, bold debuts and star-driven dramas looking for homes, TIFF 2025 could prove a decisive test for the independent film business.

Telluride Awards Analysis: ‘Hamnet,’ ‘Sentimental Value’ Join ‘Sinners’ Atop List of Oscar Frontrunners
Image
The 52nd Telluride Film Festival is now in the books. Margot Robbie, Ryan Coogler, Oprah Winfrey, David Oyelowo, Rian Johnson, Janet Yang, Kathy Kennedy and Frank Marshall were among those who came just to watch movies. Screenings were introduced with a group meditation (Chloé Zhao), a song (Jesse Plemons) and a wave (man of few words Bruce Springsteen). Adam Sandler and Emma Stone posed for photos in the streets with ecstatic local schoolkids. And the Oscar race came into clearer focus.

Below, you can read my biggest awards-related takeaways from the fest.

Four high-profile films that already have U.S. distribution had their world premieres in Telluride: Ballad of a Small Player (Netflix), Bugonia (Focus), Hamnet (Focus) and Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere (20th Century). How did they go over?

Focus has plenty of cause for celebration, as both Bugonia and Hamnet played like gangbusters and look almost certain to...

Alex Gibney’s Elon Musk Documentary Lands U.S. Theatrical Distribution
Image
Oscar-winning documentarian Alex Gibney’s long-awaited Elon Musk documentary has locked down a deal for a run in U.S. cinemas ahead of its streaming launch on HBO Max.

HBO Documentary Films and Universal Pictures have teamed up with indie distributor Bleecker Street to bring the film — which is titled, simply, Musk — to theaters. The partners describe the film as “an incisive look behind the legend of Elon Musk, the world’s most heralded ‘inventor-entrepreneur’ who has enormous influence on the world in which we all live.”

The deal was unveiled on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s kick-off of the Venice Film Festival in Italy.

Word leaked that Gibney was working on a Musk documentary as far back as March 2023, but the film has yet to receive a release date. HBO and its partners hint that Musk’s ongoing prominence in the global news cycle has made it challenging for...

'The Bear' Star Finally Addresses "Crazy" Syd/Carmy Fan Shipping

There is undeniable chemistry between Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) in FX's hit series The Bear, but does that translate to something romantic? Many fans seem to think so, but Edebiri disagrees. The actress waded into the topic of pairing Carmy and Syd romantically and revealed that while she thinks everyone is entitled to their own interpretation, she doesn't think it's a good idea. “I feel like we’ve been saying since [Season] 1, but I don’t know if people are starting to believe us now,” Edebiri said in a recent interview.

The Bottoms star suggested that fans might confuse the passion the characters have for their...

The Perfect Couple season 2 lands devastating setback in development at Netflix
Image
After becoming a runaway sensation on Netflix last fall, thanks in part to a viral opening dance number set to a catchy Meghan Trainor song, The Perfect Couple became the latest "limited series" to potentially score a second season. Earlier this year, Netflix began development on a possible season 2 that would turn the Nicole Kidman hit into an anthology series.

The proposed second season would adapt another book by best-selling author Elin Hilderbrand, this time diving into her novel Swan Song. In June, Hilderbrand provided an update on season 2 that suggested things were heading in the right direction. She teased that she had drinks with season 2 showrunner Joanna Calo. However, just two months later, things have changed.

The Perfect Couple season 2 gets disappointing update

Deadline reported on Aug. 19 that Joanna Calo officially departed The Perfect Couple season 2 as its writer and showrunner. Should the series continue on, Calo will not...

Exclusive: Production has recently wrapped in Philadelphia on Joy Will Prevail, a period drama about the final three years in the life of architect Louis Kahn, and the relationships — both romantic and professional — that inspired his final residential commission.

Set in the early 1970s, Joy Will Prevail follows Kahn at the height of his career, designing monumental structures around the world, while quietly navigating a complex personal life: having fathered children with three different women – his wife, Esther Kahn (Beals), and two longtime partners, including landscape architect Harriet Pattison (Bledel) – all of whom live with the knowledge of one another.

When a young father, Steve Korman...

‘The Perfect Couple’ Season 2: Joanna Calo Exits As Writer Of ‘Swan Song’ Adaptation In Works At Netflix
Image
Exclusive: Netflix is going back to the drawing board on a potential second season of hit limited series The Perfect Couple.

As Deadline reported in March, the streamer has been developing a followup installment based on another Nantucket-set book by best-selling The Perfect Couple author Elin Hilderbrand, the 2024 novel Swan Song, with The Bear executive producer/co-showrunner Joanna Calo as writer/showrunner.

Calo has now exited the project, sources tell Deadline. There is no new writer attached yet to Swan Song, which remains in early development. A rep for Netflix, which has not confirmed the possible Perfect Couple second season yet, declined comment.

In Swan Song, a 22-million-dollar summer home is purchased by the mysterious Richardsons who throw lavish parties, flirt with multiple locals, flaunt their wealth with not one but two yachts, and raise impossible hopes of everyone they meet. When their house burns to the ground and...

Matthew McConaughey’s Long-Awaited Crime Thriller Return Just Got a Release Update
Image
It was acclaimed upon its release at SXSW earlier this year, but it didn't get a distribution deal. Now, however, Matthew McConaughey's new crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King is looking to come to a theater near you. Black Bear is working on a deal to screen the film in American theaters, according to reports. The film has not yet secured a release date, despite critical praise: the film currently holds a 97% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Some of this may be attributed to the turbulent nature of the current film business, which has already seen one major studio acquisition in the form of the Paramount-Skydance deal, and may see another,...

Voting runs through 10 p.m. Pt on Aug. 27, setting the stage for what promises to be one of the most competitive Emmy ceremonies in recent memory, where anything can happen.

To recap the awards season, HBO Max dominated this year’s nominations with a record-breaking 142 nods — surpassing the platform’s previous high of 140 in 2022. The haul was powered by heavy hitters including “The Penguin,” which led all limited series with the most nominations in that category, in addition to other returning favorites like “The White Lotus,” “The Last of Us” and “Hacks.”

Two shows emerged as undeniable nomination juggernauts. Apple TV+’s workplace thriller “Severance” racked up 27 nominations, while its satirical Hollywood comedy “The Studio...

Cross-industry body Cinema First, supported by the Film Distributors’ Association and the UK Cinema Association, organised the event which was established as the sector was emerging from the pandemic. New Harry Potter show commitment leaves fans stunned
Image
Harry Potter is back in the news after Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav revealed on an earnings call that the plan is for the new Harry Potter show to run for a decade on HBO Max.

Let's just say fans reacted the exact way we expected they would. Taking a quick look at the reactions online, some fans were happy, but the majority of fans were stunned that the series would take that long. There are even accusations of Warner Bros. stretching it out. Other fans couldn't believe how old the cast will be by the time the series finishes.

While I do think the episode counts are going to be an issue in the future, we should also remember it took a decade-ish to film and release all eight Harry Potter movies. So, I don't totally understand the outrage. There was no way they were going to do more...

The Punisher’s van has been spotted on the set of Spider-Man: Brand New Day
There has been a lot of vehicular action spotted on the set of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth in the Tom Holland series of Spidey movies. Filming is currently taking place in Glasgow, Scotland, with the city standing in for New York City, and we’ve previously seen an armored vehicle ripping through the streets, with Spider-Man and the police in pursuit. Now, locals have spotted the van driven by Spidey’s fellow hero The Punisher on set – and, of course, they have provided some pictures of the vehicle. You can check it out at the bottom of this article.

Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is directing Spider-Man: Brand New Day from a screenplay by Chris McKenna, who has worked on all three of the previous Holland films. Robert Rodriguez in Sin City - Una donna per cui uccidere (2014)

George Clooney Made His Movie Debut In A Sequel To A Jaws Rip-Off
Image
George Clooney is one of the most beloved and successful actors in the world, which only makes it that much more surprising to learn his first-ever movie was a total disaster. "Grizzy II: Revenge" was a horror thriller about a grizzly bear who goes on a deadly rampage. However, despite being shot in 1983, the film was put on the shelf since it was unable to finish some of its special effects due to a lack of funding. But while it was initially expected to only be delayed by a few years, the "Grizzly" sequel wound up being postponed for four decades, eventually being released to the public in 2021.

You might think Clooney would be excited for his intended-debut film to finally release, but the actor reacted to the news more with lighthearted dread. "I haven't seen it — and I don't know that I want to," Clooney told The Sun in...

Tom Holland’s new Spidey suit emerges from the shadows in a new teaser trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Tom Holland
Updated: Sony has revealed another glimpse of Tom Holland’s new Spidey suit. As you can see above, we get a much better look at the webslinging hero’s new outfit. Plus, Mark Ruffalo will join Spider-Man: Brand New Day as The Hulk, and other cast members will no doubt soon be announced, making this one of the more anticipated movies of the next few years.

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are swinging into August with a blink-and-you-missed-it teaser trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. In a video shared to social media, Holland’s new Spidey suit emerges from the shadows, giving us a brief look at the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler’s new threads. The suit appears deep red with thick black lining (webbing). Then again, the shot of the rotating suit is dark Af, so that I could be way off.

“Something brand new is coming… #SpiderManDay,” reads the post.

The Fall Guy (1981-86): What Happened to the TV Show that spawned the movie?
Image
The 80s were a time when country music and a type of hero born of the good ol boy class that came into his own. This could be seen in shows like The Dukes of Hazzard, Bj and The Bear, as well as movies like Any Which Way But Loose and Smokey and the Bandit. They were a time of what would be considered fun action films and TV. Again, this was personified in shows where usually no one got seriously hurt, like The A-Team. The bad guys went to the same shooting school as your friendly neighborhood Stormtroopers. But, one TV show that would personify this “nobody better get hurt” adventure series was The Fall Guy.

The series was designed as a vehicle for star Lee Majors, who had become a household name thanks to The Six Million Dollar Man, but struggled to find a worthy follow-up. This would be it,...

‘Cocaine Bear’ Hides a Powerful Exploration of Caregiving & Parental Love [The Lady Killers Podcast]
Darla Delgado
“What happened to feminism, huh? Is that dead?”

We use the term Mama Bear to describe a woman who appears cuddly and nurturing while interacting with her children, but will viciously attack anyone who puts them in danger. This ferocious streak often appears out of nowhere, shocking those who dare to cross her path. She will do anything to protect her young and doesn’t care how monstrous she appears to the rest of the world. When viewed from inside the circle of her protection, she’s an empowering embodiment of female strength. But should you find yourself on the outside, beware her fierce dedication and surprising power.

Elizabeth Banks’ 2023 film Cocaine Bear cuts to the heart of this fascinating archetype with an actual bear determined to protect her young. Inspired by a true story, this bombastic film explores a world of flawed caregivers who find themselves in the den of a deadly mama bear.

Weekend Box Office: Fantastic Four falls just short of matching Superman’s opening
Image
The suits at Marvel are no doubt breathing a sigh of relief this weekend, as Fantastic Four: First Steps has finally broken the studio’s recent streak of underwhelming box office openings. While its $118 million debut isn’t quite the juggernaut it would have been during Marvel’s peak—Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania opened to $120 million just three years ago and was considered a disappointment—it’s still a welcome rebound after Captain America: Brave New World ($88 million) and Thunderbolts ($75 million). We expected it to open lower in our predictions. That said, it does fall slightly short of James Gunn’s Superman, which opened two weeks ago to $125 million.

Still, it’s a major win for Marvel’s First Family, whose cinematic track record has been less than stellar. The original 2000s Fantastic Four films debuted to $56 and $57 million respectively, while the ill-fated 2015 reboot sputtered out with just $25.6 million. This...

A Terrific New Molly Gordon Movie Tears Down One Of Modern TV's Most Annoying Tropes
Image
"Oh, Hi!" starts off like a rom-com, but also like a horror movie. We meet Iris (Molly Gordon) and her boyfriend Isaac (Logan Lerman) as they spend a nice weekend up in a secluded house out of the city, and during that first day, everything seems suspiciously perfect. Indeed, Iris and Isaac seem to be getting along a little too well, and we know this wouldn't be much of a movie if nothing went wrong.

Finally, the penny drops: While Isaac is handcuffed to a bed post-coitus, he reveals that he's not ready for a relationship. Iris is baffled, because it sure seemed like she and Isaac were already in a relationship. But Isaac doesn't see it this way. Despite inviting her for a weekend getaway upstate and being romantic with her throughout the whole first act, he doesn't see Iris as his girlfriend and has zero interest in letting that happen.

Despite 85% Rotten Tomatoes Score, ‘The Bear’ Season 4's Viewership Numbers Aren't Looking Good
Image
FX's comedy drama, The Bear, debuted its fourth season on June 25, and not long after, the series was renewed for a fifth season. According to Nielsen, The Bear was the seventh most-streamed title in the U.S. during the week of its fourth season premiere, as it hit an impressive 917 million minutes watched between June 23 to June 29. Despite such a notable tally, it falls short of the series' third installment. The Season 3 premiere of The Bear reached a collosal 1.2 billion minutes within a similar timeframe, with Season 4's numbers showing a drop-off of approximately 24%. The drop perhaps raises questions about the Emmy-winning series' long-term momentum despite critical acclaim.

It is, however, important to put these numbers into context. The Bear has enjoyed a four-season run so far, with a fifth confirmed in early July. Season 3's total of 1.2 billion minutes represents a series high, with Season 2 and Season 1 clocking...

One Line in ‘The Bear’ Season 3 Exposes a Big Flaw in Carmy’s Backstory
Image
The Bear on Hulu is admired for its portrayal of raw visuals, high-pressure environment, and chef life with genuineness and without filters. There are times when the makers can leave out a detail deliberately or sometimes just miss it.

Following this, The Bear is making rounds on Reddit for its one missed fact. While it’s a fan instinct to dig out a character’s backstory, one such thing came to the forefront that has got social media thinking. The lack of precision in telling about Carmy’s backstory in Season 3. Given the bear’s reputation for its attention to detail, the perceived ‘flaw’ regarding his culinary award nomination might have a simpler explanation than a continuity error.

I was writing this thing as a movie at one point, but every time I would take five steps, some chef would be like, ‘Don’t do it, because it’s gonna f*in’ suck.

The visionary further emphasized the show’s creation and the casting, and looked out for the themes that could justify the Hulu show in the best possible way. Furthermore, the show is set to be revived for its fifth season.
