Black Bear’s fledgling US distribution venture has picked David Michôd’s boxing biopic Christy starring Sydney Sweeney as its first film and has scheduled a nationwide release on November 7. The drama gets its world premiere here at Toronto International Film Festival on Friday.

US independent distributors have a lot on their minds heading into the 50th anniversary edition of Toronto International Film Festival, when their early fall festival appetite will come under scrutiny.
The theatrical space remains challenging. Few buyers have the wherewithal to compete with Hollywood majors and streamers, especially as platforms are said to be low-balling pay 1 and pay 2 licence fees that can help theatrical distributors afford minimum guarantees and robust release commitments.
Yet there are grounds for cautious optimism. Resourceful distributors continue to adapt and board projects earlier in the lifecycle to better compete with deep-pocketed rivals.

Unlike Cannes or Berlin, Toronto has never been a market-first festival. But ahead of the launch of the official TIFF market next year, Toronto is looking to boost its industry credentials, positioning itself as the go-to for finished films — particularly mainstream English-language fare — without domestic distribution.
“Given the uncertainty in the movie exhibition space right now, [Toronto’s] going to give us a real snapshot of what the people who release movies think can work in the marketplace,” says Steven Soderbergh, who brings his latest, The Christophers, to TIFF without a distributor. “There’s no better barometer of what’s happening than a bunch of people who have to put movies out into theaters, making decisions about what they think can succeed.”
With prestige titles, bold debuts and star-driven dramas looking for homes, TIFF 2025 could prove a decisive test for the independent film business.

The 52nd Telluride Film Festival is now in the books. Margot Robbie, Ryan Coogler, Oprah Winfrey, David Oyelowo, Rian Johnson, Janet Yang, Kathy Kennedy and Frank Marshall were among those who came just to watch movies. Screenings were introduced with a group meditation (Chloé Zhao), a song (Jesse Plemons) and a wave (man of few words Bruce Springsteen). Adam Sandler and Emma Stone posed for photos in the streets with ecstatic local schoolkids. And the Oscar race came into clearer focus.

Immersing us in the turbulent world of 1940s Shanghai, She Has No Name dazzlingly contrasts a grisly, intimate mystery with an era of sweeping transformation.
We first see Zhan-Zhou (Zhang) as she furtively boards a streetcar. In her arms is a canvas sack — soiled by a burgeoning bloodstain. She is arrested by Deputy Police Commissioner Xue (Lei Jiayin) for the murder and dismemberment of her husband (Wang Chuanjun), a pawnbroker and hapless gambler with the ominous nickname Big Bear.

After becoming a runaway sensation on Netflix last fall, thanks in part to a viral opening dance number set to a catchy Meghan Trainor song, The Perfect Couple became the latest "limited series" to potentially score a second season. Earlier this year, Netflix began development on a possible season 2 that would turn the Nicole Kidman hit into an anthology series.
The proposed second season would adapt another book by best-selling author Elin Hilderbrand, this time diving into her novel Swan Song. In June, Hilderbrand provided an update on season 2 that suggested things were heading in the right direction. She teased that she had drinks with season 2 showrunner Joanna Calo. However, just two months later, things have changed.

Exclusive: Production has recently wrapped in Philadelphia on Joy Will Prevail, a period drama about the final three years in the life of architect Louis Kahn, and the relationships — both romantic and professional — that inspired his final residential commission.

Set in the early 1970s, Joy Will Prevail follows Kahn at the height of his career, designing monumental structures around the world, while quietly navigating a complex personal life: having fathered children with three different women – his wife, Esther Kahn (Beals), and two longtime partners, including landscape architect Harriet Pattison (Bledel) – all of whom live with the knowledge of one another.

Sadly, Trailer Trash never happened – but we did get a Thanksgiving movie eventually. And today, a new Roth faux trailer has dropped online! It’s called The Piano Killer and it will be playing in theatres with the bonkers splatterfest Jimmy and Stiggs, but you can watch it right now in the embed above.
Note that the faux trailer for The Piano Killer ends with the promise that the film is coming in 2042, a nod to the fact that it took seventeen years for the Thanksgiving movie to get made.

George Clooney is one of the most beloved and successful actors in the world, which only makes it that much more surprising to learn his first-ever movie was a total disaster. "Grizzy II: Revenge" was a horror thriller about a grizzly bear who goes on a deadly rampage. However, despite being shot in 1983, the film was put on the shelf since it was unable to finish some of its special effects due to a lack of funding. But while it was initially expected to only be delayed by a few years, the "Grizzly" sequel wound up being postponed for four decades, eventually being released to the public in 2021.
You might think Clooney would be excited for his intended-debut film to finally release, but the actor reacted to the news more with lighthearted dread. "I haven't seen it — and I don't know that I want to," Clooney told The Sun in...

Updated: Sony has revealed another glimpse of Tom Holland’s new Spidey suit. As you can see above, we get a much better look at the webslinging hero’s new outfit. Plus, Mark Ruffalo will join Spider-Man: Brand New Day as The Hulk, and other cast members will no doubt soon be announced, making this one of the more anticipated movies of the next few years.
Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are swinging into August with a blink-and-you-missed-it teaser trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. In a video shared to social media, Holland’s new Spidey suit emerges from the shadows, giving us a brief look at the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler’s new threads. The suit appears deep red with thick black lining (webbing). Then again, the shot of the rotating suit is dark Af, so that I could be way off.

The 80s were a time when country music and a type of hero born of the good ol boy class that came into his own. This could be seen in shows like The Dukes of Hazzard, Bj and The Bear, as well as movies like Any Which Way But Loose and Smokey and the Bandit. They were a time of what would be considered fun action films and TV. Again, this was personified in shows where usually no one got seriously hurt, like The A-Team. The bad guys went to the same shooting school as your friendly neighborhood Stormtroopers. But, one TV show that would personify this “nobody better get hurt” adventure series was The Fall Guy.

‘Cocaine Bear’ Hides a Powerful Exploration of Caregiving & Parental Love [The Lady Killers Podcast]
“What happened to feminism, huh? Is that dead?”
We use the term Mama Bear to describe a woman who appears cuddly and nurturing while interacting with her children, but will viciously attack anyone who puts them in danger. This ferocious streak often appears out of nowhere, shocking those who dare to cross her path. She will do anything to protect her young and doesn’t care how monstrous she appears to the rest of the world. When viewed from inside the circle of her protection, she’s an empowering embodiment of female strength. But should you find yourself on the outside, beware her fierce dedication and surprising power.
Elizabeth Banks’ 2023 film Cocaine Bear cuts to the heart of this fascinating archetype with an actual bear determined to protect her young. Inspired by a true story, this bombastic film explores a world of flawed caregivers who find themselves in the den of a deadly mama bear.

The suits at Marvel are no doubt breathing a sigh of relief this weekend, as Fantastic Four: First Steps has finally broken the studio’s recent streak of underwhelming box office openings. While its $118 million debut isn’t quite the juggernaut it would have been during Marvel’s peak—Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania opened to $120 million just three years ago and was considered a disappointment—it’s still a welcome rebound after Captain America: Brave New World ($88 million) and Thunderbolts ($75 million). We expected it to open lower in our predictions. That said, it does fall slightly short of James Gunn’s Superman, which opened two weeks ago to $125 million.
Still, it’s a major win for Marvel’s First Family, whose cinematic track record has been less than stellar. The original 2000s Fantastic Four films debuted to $56 and $57 million respectively, while the ill-fated 2015 reboot sputtered out with just $25.6 million. This...

"Oh, Hi!" starts off like a rom-com, but also like a horror movie. We meet Iris (Molly Gordon) and her boyfriend Isaac (Logan Lerman) as they spend a nice weekend up in a secluded house out of the city, and during that first day, everything seems suspiciously perfect. Indeed, Iris and Isaac seem to be getting along a little too well, and we know this wouldn't be much of a movie if nothing went wrong.
Finally, the penny drops: While Isaac is handcuffed to a bed post-coitus, he reveals that he's not ready for a relationship. Iris is baffled, because it sure seemed like she and Isaac were already in a relationship. But Isaac doesn't see it this way. Despite inviting her for a weekend getaway upstate and being romantic with her throughout the whole first act, he doesn't see Iris as his girlfriend and has zero interest in letting that happen.

FX's comedy drama, The Bear, debuted its fourth season on June 25, and not long after, the series was renewed for a fifth season. According to Nielsen, The Bear was the seventh most-streamed title in the U.S. during the week of its fourth season premiere, as it hit an impressive 917 million minutes watched between June 23 to June 29. Despite such a notable tally, it falls short of the series' third installment. The Season 3 premiere of The Bear reached a collosal 1.2 billion minutes within a similar timeframe, with Season 4's numbers showing a drop-off of approximately 24%. The drop perhaps raises questions about the Emmy-winning series' long-term momentum despite critical acclaim.
It is, however, important to put these numbers into context. The Bear has enjoyed a four-season run so far, with a fifth confirmed in early July. Season 3's total of 1.2 billion minutes represents a series high, with Season 2 and Season 1 clocking...

The Bear on Hulu is admired for its portrayal of raw visuals, high-pressure environment, and chef life with genuineness and without filters. There are times when the makers can leave out a detail deliberately or sometimes just miss it.
Following this, The Bear is making rounds on Reddit for its one missed fact. While it’s a fan instinct to dig out a character’s backstory, one such thing came to the forefront that has got social media thinking. The lack of precision in telling about Carmy’s backstory in Season 3. Given the bear’s reputation for its attention to detail, the perceived ‘flaw’ regarding his culinary award nomination might have a simpler explanation than a continuity error.

What if you are told that your favourite dramedy on Hulu, The Bear, was an idea for a movie? Yes, you heard it right. In an interview with Esquire, the Emmy-winning show’s creator, Christopher Storer, opened up about how turning the show into a movie almost doomed him. He said,
I was writing this thing as a movie at one point, but every time I would take five steps, some chef would be like, ‘Don’t do it, because it’s gonna f*in’ suck.
The visionary further emphasized the show’s creation and the casting, and looked out for the themes that could justify the Hulu show in the best possible way. Furthermore, the show is set to be revived for its fifth season.
