Cloudburst is a 2011 Canadian-American adventure comedy-drama film by American-Canadian writer and director Thom Fitzgerald. This hilarious foul-mouthed, lesbian road movie co-stars Oscar (R)- winning actresses Brenda Fricker and Olympia Dukakis as Dot and Stella, a crackerjack lesbian couple on the run from a nursing home. You'll laugh so hard you'll cry. Stella and Dot have been together for 31 years and have faithfully accompanied one another through life's ups and downs. Now in their seventies, Stella is hard of hearing and Dot is legally blind. Dotty's prudish granddaughter, Molly (played by Genie Award-winner Kristin Booth), decides the best place for Dot is a nursing home that will provide all the necessities. This forces Stella and Dot to make a bold decision: they will leave their hometown and make their way to Canada, where same-sex marriage is legal. It's a last-gap bid to stay together. En route to Canada, they pick up a young hitchhiker, Prentice, played by newcomer Ryan Doucette. A small-town boy turned modern dancer, he is returning to Nova Scotia to visit his dying mother. Despite his bravado, Prentice is a confused and wounded soul who has much to learn from Stella and Dot as they wage their own unexpected battle - after three decades, can they keep their family together? One of the most sweetest love story which will bring tears n smile in the same time.

Loved this movie. Contrary to the other reviewer who found Olympia Dukakis' character offensive I thought she was wonderful. She was playing a character. She wasn't representing all lesbians. Yes it was over the top but I think the humanity of her character came through in spite of the swearing and 'bull dyke' representation. I think that the other character's grand daughter not realizing she was a lesbian was a bigger stretch than Olympia's character. I also thought that the relationship between the two main characters was very realistic whether you wanted to accept their characterizations or not. I actually went to this movie not expecting much and really just wanted to see Olympia Dukakis. I came out of the movie laughing, crying and uplifted by a story of love that is universal and eternal. I am sorry if you didn't want to accept a lesbian who wears vests, cowboy hats, drinks tequila and swears like a sailor but they do exist and so what? Who cares? Love is love. If you want to laugh and cry and believe that everyone should have the right to marry the person they love no matter what then go see this movie. If you are easily offended by a bull dyke characterization of an elderly lesbian then you may want to skip it but you will be missing a real treat.

This was an excellent movie. The 3 stars Olympia Dukakis, Brenda Fricker and Ryan Doucette give outstanding performances and make the characters believable and interesting. Thom Fitzgerald takes a simple story and turns it into a wonderful journey with spectacular backdrops spectacular performances from his cast. In the course of 2 hours he is able to develop each of the main characters so that we really care about each of them. The minor Characters are a little cliché at times but it never takes away from the story or what makes this a great movie. The movie has course language but if you are not upset by this you will find yourself laughing and crying all within the length of the movie. Do yourself a favour and go see this!

In Maine, an elderly, closeted lesbian couple must deal with a granddaughter who wants to send her grandmother to a nursing home. The couple believes they must escape to Nova Scotia where they can marry under Canadian laws.
The first half of the film is great comedy. As the stronger half of the couple, Olympia Dukakis is perfectly foul-mouthed as a ferocious bulldozer. She makes one want to smack her except she makes us laugh so much. Her monologue of defending her frequent use of the c-word is to die for.
While Brenda Fricker is also fine as Dukakis's partner, the film is weaker in the second half. A broad farcical scene in a farm home seems out of place as do many other scenes before the film's end. While the film ends on a moving note, it's too bad it didn't maintain its initial strength.

This marvelous little, independent flick somehow escaped me for years. At first sight it's just a typical road movie. Two old ladies, a lesbian couple for 31 years, escape from the indignities of a nursing home and drive to Canada to get married. There is a hitchhiker, a modern dancer/stripper, and people and situations one encounters on a road trip. What makes this movie a jewel are two fantastic actresses, two Oscar winners, Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker. Their chemistry, their ease with which they just put on a skin and soul of their characters makes this flick a treasure. Farewell Ms. Dukakis, you'll be missed.

Olympia Dukakis is a beautiful old lady, miscast in this part. She delivers lines one would expect to hear from Alex of Orange is the New Black, and it just doesn't work for her -- or for this old lady writing this review. Now that same-sex marriage is the law of virtually all of the land in North America, even down here in Old Virginny, the movie does feel a bit dated.
The fact that there is no resolution for Prentice in his relationship to his parents is disappointing. The writer seems to take the easy way out rather than seeing the situation to its probably more interesting ending than this treatment gives it. The movie at times descends to farce, though it has some touching moments. Prentice and Dot give excellent performances despite the weak, undeveloped script and immature directing.
The cinematography in Maine and Nova Scotia are incredibly beautiful. I would not recommend this movie despite the three leads' terrific acting.

The brief synopsis of this story is that it's about two old lesbians living in Maine who pick up a hitchhiker. That's not a very good synopsis. This movie is about two people who have loved each other and lived together for 31 years. Age and a selfish granddaughter threaten to end the relationship so these two octogenarian ladies decide to run away in an old, red pickup truck through the back roads of Maine to Canada where they can be married. Along the way they pick up a young, male hitchhiker who happens to be a modern/exotic dancer from New York. This trio then takes an unlikely road trip with a series of misadventures and adventures through the beautifully photographed landscape of eastern Canada.
Olympia Dukakis plays a role you might never expect to see: a crusty old lesbian with the mouth of the saltiest sailor. She is magnificent. Brenda Fricker plays the blind, wise old woman. You root for her every step of the way. A very funny Ryan Doucette plays the hitchhiker. You'd never know this was his first movie.
This movie places everything you expect from a romantic comedy/drama and pours it into new vessels not previously used to hold this vintage. The movie has already played in theaters in every country but the US. In the US, the Lifetime cable channel purchased it, so the language is not likely to survive un-bleeped. Not to worry, it appears on DVD in July, 2013 so you can see it as the author intended: sweet, salty, and well done. (We just saw this movie in San Jose, CA as part of the Camera Cinema Club.)

This movie tries to be too many things and it ruins it. For most of the movie, the writer-director goes for blatant over-the-top "really bad TV sitcom" humour. Most of the attempted humour is extremely lame, over the top and not realistic whatsoever. It tries to so hard to be vulgar and shocking (especially the Dukakis character)that even someone who usually appreciates salty and vulgar humour was left dumbfounded by 95% of the attempted jokes in this movie.
The more serious/sentimental parts were much better and well done but after portraying the 3 main characters as idiotic buffoons for 70 minutes, we found ourselves unable to care for them as real human being for the sweeter parts, because of it.
The 3 main actors also do much better in the few serious parts of the movie than in the over-the-top slapstick that is so poorly written that you can't really tell if their acting was terrible. I suspect it was the material and direction more than the acting, as Dukakis and Fricker are such solid pros.

Really! Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker portray lesbians that have been in my life, foul mouth and all. To those who says this movie is not 100% realistic, well, thank heavens for that! These characters are real enough and the humor is great. The real life consequences of getting old, living as unmarried, unrecognized partners is very real and can be very painful. And those issues are brought forth with irony, clarity, raunchiness and loving tenderness. Just like life.
The young hitchhiker character was endearing, bringing another additional layer of the complexity of human relationships into the mix. This movie is lighthearted at times, laughing out loud funny here and there, and dramatizes the struggles of being homosexual, elderly, and being authentically out of the norm.

I decided to watch Cloudburst the other night. I loved this movie, it was at times a laugh out loud, and other times a tear jerker. The performances by all the cast was phenomenal. If you are looking for a movie that will capture your heart, this is it.
This is more than just a love story. It tells the story of two women who have shared many years of their lives. Who in the face of illness face the real possibility of being separated. There's many couples who face this everyday. Hits on some serious topics, yet the dialogue is some times light. Great.
Its on netflix. If you have a chance check it out. It is winner of 13 awards. And rightfully so.

While the overall context was clever and cute, I felt myself constantly jarred by inconsistent scenes and completely out of touch portrayals of locations and characters. The "butch" of the duo was overdone and also got in the way of the movie as a whole.
The introduction of the young man was clever BUT the development of the character was poor at best. He delivered his lines well, and he was authentic, but the script went from bad to worse. There were many holes in both the plot and the locations.
Border crossings were ridiculous and anyone who is from N New England would know, crossing from Maine to Canada, heading East to Nova Scotia takes you into FRENCH speaking New Brunswick Canada!!! All signs will be in French, all stores, shops are in French. Instead this was shot on the cheap and all signs, streets, locations were English Speaking.
The young man's family was never introduced or developed in a way that the audience would know anything about how this guy somehow grew up in a home where he had no room , nor could live in, nor had a "father" which was plausible. Furthermore lived on a farm where there was no barn, no crops and no animals.
Every single town looked the same....
The absolutely ridiculous was the view of the SUNSET looking over the Atlantic Ocean- eh? If your on the EAST Coast, its a sunrise.... the west coast its a sunset. The movie was filled with these flaws that took away from the overall theme of two women that had lived together for 31 years.
Save your money and time, skip this one...

If I had to choose a film among all those I have seen the last 5 years, I couldn't recommend more Cloudburst!
This is an hilarious love story at each and every minute.
Cloudburst is also a very touching comedy, beautiful.
Brenda's Fricker (Dot) and Olympia's Dukakis (Stella) acting is purely magic! They carry us in a road trip with Ryan Doucette (Prentice). At the end, the film received a full standing ovation! It deserves fully all nominations and awards it has received!
By now, I'm sure that whatever plan you have tonight, you will cancel it to watch Cloudburst. Don't hesitate anymore!

It has been a long time since I have enjoyed a movie as much as I did when I watched Cloudburst last summer. My daughter and I watched it together and we laughed and cried all the way through it. I had not heard anything about the show before seeing it and it was a thrill to be so surprised at how great the show was. While all of the cast played their parts wonderfully, my favourite character was Ryan Doucette and I look forward to seeing him in many more future movies. I hope it comes out on video so I can buy a copy to add to my home collection. I can't wait to watch it again. Thank you for such great entertainment and keep up the great work Ryan.

I would have liked to give this film a higher rating but contrary to other reviewers, I do not believe that one has to be immersed in excessive profanity and garbage language to "get into" a characterization.
Hundreds of early movies have successfully and vividly portrayed "bullish" characters without having to adopt garbage can lingo to create their character as more "believable". Frankly, I find excessive garbage can language distracting and used to "fill time" which could be better used to tell the story more thoroughly.
I did like the story, however, just got tired REAL FAST of Dukakis's bad dialog. Again, when an actor has to rely on garbage for language to create their character, something is badly lacking in their acting abilities.
I loved Brenda Fricker's character however, as well as the male stripper wanna be -- great characters and placed against Dukakis's over the top, offensive yuck, it was a welcome relief.
Tender, fantastic story of what some may consider an unconventional love. THAT at least survives throughout all the bad language miraculously.

(TLDR: I definitely recommend watching this.)
The title sums up my initial thought about the movie - a lesbian COMEDY? A lighthearted lesbian movie where nobody goes to conversion therapy camp and nobody cheats on their husband? Nobody goes through a traumatic coming out to their family and friends which then Have a Hard Time? Wild, unbelievable.
Hold your horses if you got too excited by this crazy occurence though - we couldn't do without at least one typical lgbt-movie thing - It's an lgbt themed movie so of course someone dies (not tagging as spoiler because honestly - you most likely already knew that, this is how common this is).
Also there's a weird ammount of naked men in this for a movie about lesbians.
I liked the raunchy over the top, brainless humor - it's just really not something you get enough of for this type of movies. Something you Also don't get a lot of is portrayals of gay people which are older than like, 20, and actually had a decent life in a stable relationship. We need more movies like this, more normal movies which are not all striving to be High Art and talking about how being gay is a tragedy that will Ruin Your Life Forever. Not because those grim movies are not relatable - they ARE relatable for most lgbt people and that's the problem.
This is a cute movie that's just something random you can watch with a popcorn and not have an existential crisis over. So cheers to that and I'm hoping for more movies like this. Taking away the two stars for some cringy moments, and the "wait it's gay so someone has to die".
