Retired cop that can't watch most cop shows.

I wasn't in Long Beach, but I was a CA street cop and this show catches the tone, cross-talk and culture well (so far, I'm halfway through the series). There are very few shows that accurately do that (two others being Bosch and Southland). But unlike those shows, it's only 30 minutes.... one of the few cop dramas I've seen in a 30 minute format since Adam-12, and I like it.

It follows a trainer and trainee unit, Officer Harmon and Officer Diaz (Troian Bellisario and Brandon Larracuente) patrolling in Long Beach, CA. You have the usual drama you've seen on COPS that comes from responding to patrol calls, plus the rookie needing to apply the academy to real life, conflicts of cultures and work eras.

When Harmon and Diaz are told to stand by and observe street drifters at an intersection, the rookie is frustrated at the inability to do anything. The show has the "old-school" cops that remember being able to react to a crime, not just observe. Sergeant Lasmen and Officer Barlowe (Eric LaSalle and Mac Brandt). LaSalle is always great as a competent, but endlessly frustrated by the system, employee (which he mastered on ER). There are tidbits he brings to the character, like a quick swig from a non-labeled baby-blue bottle never addressed, but anyone that's had heartburn will recognize as antacid. LaSalle also directs most the episodes.

Brandt's Officer Barlowe feels a bit darker. He's reminding me of a character from a Joseph Wambaugh book. Officer Barlowe's handling of a homicide body part had a hint of Rosco Rules from The Choirboys.

If you enjoyed Bosch and Southland, you should like On Call. If you don't like those shows you should still check this out because at only 30 minutes it's quick and you might find something else on the show that works for you.

Pretty Good

There are so many police procedurals that are out there to choose from that one has to really stick out if it's going to be worth your time to watch. Well, On Call is one of those police series that's absolutely worth the time to watch. It's been getting compared to the ridiculously underrated Southland because of the way the show is shot, and while it's not as good as Southland, it's still pretty good show. The first season consists of only 8 30min episodes so it's an easy binge. I definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a new entertaining police series that's both original and entertaining. I hope we get several seasons of this series.

Better Than Expected

On Call follows the police force in Long Beach, California and all they have to go through protecting and serving the community. It mostly follows a pair of police officers (Trojan Bellisario and Brandon Larracuente) as they respond to call after call on their daily shift. I have to say that I really enjoyed this even more than I expected too. I was just looking for a show to kill some time with and what I found is one of the better cop shows I've seen this year. It's too gritty for network tv so don't expect a show like the ones you see all the time. This is a raw and believable show on what cops have to go through on a daily basis. The episodes are short at a half hour apiece but they pack plenty of excitement in that half hour.

End of Watch / Southland Feel

Been waiting for a cop drama that could be close in comparison to Southland and Bosch...two of the best! Four episodes in and this show has delivered! Between the body worn camera views and in-car camera footage, the action scenes, it leaves you with and End of Watch/ Southland feel after each episode! So far, no corny, unbelievable investigations, seen on many police shows today, which has been nice to see! Hope it gets the traction it needs to stay around for a few seasons, and new cast members are brought in to continue the storyline. Was upset when Southland left, but this show has brought back those great episodes!

If you enjoyed Southland...

This is a lot like Southland, yet there are considerable differences. The character development is quick, and pretty much centers on the training officer and the rookie, both of whom have a lot of baggage. There are quite a few predictable scenes, but the surprises outnumber those. No police procedural is anything like real law enforcement. But that's entertainment! In the end, the series is definitely worth watching, and I enjoyed it enough to binge watch it in one day with the excuse that it was cold outside. I'm certainly hoping there will be further seasons! I will be watching for it and waiting!

Surprise Gem. Season 2 please.

This is a surprise! Came out of nowhere too.

There's been a lot of disappointments of late so it's refreshing to see something positive.

Dick Wolf - can't bet against him. He knows his genre.

Love the fact this is set in LA. It's filmed really well. Innovative camerawork.

Love in this world of streamers padding TV out too long each episode we have one that is swift and to the point.

Great writing. I was addicted very quick and had to get through it all.

Excellent performances. Brandon Larracuente Is a revelation. The vulnerability and likability he brings is superior acting. Eriq LA Salle loved seeing him again.

Troian Bellisario Is good but a bit sterile would have liked her to be a bit more accessible.

Please bring on season 2. What a great series!!!

Solid Police Drama, reminds me of "The Shield".

Title kinda says it. Pretty well written characters on both sides of the law. Plot line is wild but kinda realistic. Really solid acting across the board. Even the minor characters are pretty great.

The story takes place in Long Beach's port, beaches, and cultural hotspots as well as the slums and homeless camps. I think it does a good job of featuring the city as a backdrop for the diverse mix of characters portrayed.

My only issue is the show chooses to not translate Spanish even when it helps the story. I end up doing a little google auto translate to keep up. My Spanish is too poor to keep up.

Great show

Finally a show worth watching. We have numerous streaming services and search for something decent to watch and finally we found "On Call " and we wound up binge watching it. We should have spaced it out but no and now from what I've found out, there are no plans for season two. You have to be kidding.

True there are several details that don't add up such as street locations, surfing, and I don't think patrol police don't get that involved in some crimes. But if we demanded an exacting crime drama we would be watching police completing paper work, sitting and cruising with very little happening and nobody would watch that. But this show has excitement, interesting characters and some good plots So sit back, suspend reality and enjoy it and please let's have a season two.

Shows like this seem too few and far between...

Like many commenters, I am a serious fan of the series Boach, Southland, and movie End of Watch. I think "On Call" does a great job to in portraying the life of a street cop in Long Beach, while finding its own way in this genre.

I too felt that they were reminders of SouthLAnd throughout the show, and they were particular scenes in the various episodes that were markedly similar to SouthLAnd and EoW.

Where the show differed from the two, was focus on personal lives. Well, there were some, but it was comparatively less than other cop shows. I'm not sure how I feel about that. For example, in Bosch, I think that the focus on personal lives was an essential element to the story lines. In End of Watch, the focus on personal lives was the emotional hook that prepared you for the ending.

There were some police procedural goofs during the show and I noticed some continuity issues, but nothing serious. I did find it interesting that Vega was never referred to as "Boot" which is almost ingrained in TO culture.

I'm not sure if this is going to be a recurring seasonal show, or a once and done. I'd like to see it renewed, but sometimes that isn't the best outcome for a show like this.

Top notch cop show!

Binged six episodes, left a couple for tomorrow! Excellent cast, story telling, superb camera work. The length of the episodes is a breath of fresh air, no slack or wasted screen time. Brilliant. Eric La Salle clearly knows good writing when he sees it and wants to be involved at all levels on both acting and directing duties.

The two leads are brilliant.superb casting choices. I'm a big law and order fan , so Dick Wolfs name drew me to this initially but in reality it's far removed from those shows...it's far more gritty. I imagine that LA cops use a lot more 'language' than we see represented here but otherwise it seems very documentary like. Fingers crossed for another season, it's great 👍

Decent drama with downsides

It's a decent police drama, in many ways even exceptional: it's detailed in the daily routines, it's bleak and unromantic towards the police duties, and it's equally direct and unromantic towards police attitude, "tough men" culture and general lack of flexibility, either. Towards the general society and its problems, too.

To add to that, some characters are portrayed in a very thoughtful and believable way. Especially the lead female character - the actress does an impeccable job of portraying the hardest work of a woman in a still very much men-dominated police world. But not only her - most of other police officers are portrayed in a very direct way: few are likeable, but their motives and intentions are very defined.

But then, there are certain things that plague the serious quite severely. Most annoying is the rookie - he begins as dutyful and honest, even if troubled, personality. But quite soon he turns into a disorganised, hectic, patronising and entirely too chummy with his mentoring officer, which is just annoying. On top of that, there's a pretense of something grander than the routine work going on, but in the end the great intrigue of the second season seems to be who did the lead character piss of so much she'd denied a transfer.

That said, there's a lot of potential for it to become a more dramatic and sophisticated story, which I hope it will - but I also hope the rookie character and the general plot gets more polishing and balancing next season.

Starts strong but too much personal drama

As many have pointed out, we haven't seen a half-hour cop series in years although they used to be pretty standard. It's a nice change. But seeing Dick Wolfe's name yet again makes me cautious. He's behind the Law & Order franchise as well as the Chicago franchise and many law-based shows over many years. They're all pretty much a cookie cutter recipe: deliver action interspersed with copious amounts of personal drama and touchy feely political statements.

On Call starts strong for 4 episodes. We see believable cops - one small female and one Mexican American (so two minorities, essentially) hitting the streets where there's some authentic feeling action and interaction. They're building a new relationship and the audience is presented with realistic scenarios, keeping the cops' personal expressions to vague family problems and out of way relationship challenges. I'm really enjoying it at this point - lots of cop v bad guy action.

Suddenly in E4 they pull out the personal drama x 10. Oh ffs. Must EVERY cop have a family member in prison who is at risk because of their job; must there always be some sibling who is addicted and puts their uniformed loved one in difficult situations?

Initially, I felt like a fly on the wall observing cops. Now I feel like I'm just being spoon fed more standard Dick Wolf print outs.

Some of the interactions are realistic but I'm not sold on the Harmon character at all. Perhaps the series is trying to point out how untouchable DEI hires have been because she's a rouge cop who her coworkers don't respect who has broken rule after rule but is still not only on the streets but a TO.

Most of the other characters are acceptable but can we get some new faces? Is there really such a small pool of actors for these shows?

I'll likely not be holding my breath for Season 2.

On Call in Long Beach...

Rookie officer, Diaz, joins the Long Beach police department, and is under the watchful eye of Officer Harmon (Troian Bellisario powerful as ever), who just had one of her past trainee's gunned down. So on the hunt they go for the high-profile killer in what seems to be another typical police series. But the series makers have viewers on edge, never showing the officers private lives, but always on patrol in the concrete jungle of Long Beach, by using jarring handheld images, body-cams, security cameras and the likes as officers navigate the hellish pit of a society unkind to itself. Also the dynamics among the officers is well built-up and handled, never knowing who to trust. A giant learning curve for the rookie, and an intense observational experience for us viewers...

Best Police Show I've Ever Watched

This is nothing like the rookie, thank god. This follows realistic policing and everyday situations law enforcement officers get into. The actors are great and the show never gets boring.

99% of this show is them in uniform and on patrol. The cameras and bodycams make it a very engaging movie and fun to follow, especially when they're worried about incriminating themselves with their own bodycam. The show really goes into depth on how just one wrong choice can get you in a real sticky situation.

Overall, I highly recommend this show and I am very glad I was able to experience it for myself.

Is this the next Southland?

Title says it all really! Thoroughly impressed by the pilot (which packs a real punch) and the blend of the nitty gritty with the typical styled cop drama. Subsequent episodes are just as good!

The mixture of body cam, dash cam and dynamic camera usage really draws in the viewer and makes you feel like you're there, on scene.

If you're a fan of shows like Southland, you're going to love this!

The show touches on some incredibly raw and powerful themes, but does it in a way that doesn't pull its punches and it certainly holds a mirror up to some of the more distasteful members of society (not that they would care to take notice).

My only criticism is that I wish the episodes were longer! Roll on future series'.

The Rookie without likeable characters

Swing and a miss. Story is okay bust just not feeling the characters. Diaz lacks backstory and Harmon is not convincing as a veteran cop. The mix of body cam and moving camera makes you feel like you are in the moment and a nice effect. Hoping as the series progresses that we see more of the backstory behind both Harmon and Diaz to help better understand the dynamic between them.

First I've seen of Eriq La Salle in ages. Not sure how convincing he is in the role but hopefully time will allow him the show off his chops. Not feeling Lori Loughin as the hard nose alt. I will give the show a chance as it has potential.

Overall a great cop show but did lose a little traction toward the end of the season.

I really enjoyed this, binge watched the entire season in one run. Lots of Southland vibes (although not as good in my opinion), and nice to see a strong female lead who isn't some ridiculous looking femme fatale, a stereotype which Hollywood still seem to struggle with.

However I do think it got a little action movie toward the end, the last few episodes seemed rushed and some shootout screnes a bit too wild west. Harmon's old training officer came across very wooden on screen, not the best acting and the interactions between the two seemed very out of place compared to other performances such as the in car scenes where Harmon and Diaz are talking.

Overall a great watch but I think they need to push a little further in season 2 for this one to stick around.

Solid show, eps too short tho

Solid 8.5/9 outta 10 for me, really solid cast, good story so far jus surprised at the episode length! Most shows nowadays are at least 45mins long... Don't understand why so short.

I thought I'd never not be able to see Troian as anyone other than Spencer but she was good in Suits and good in this so far! Really nice to see Eric La Salle too! There's a blast from the past from Dr Benton!

Anyway other than the short episode length and short series total @ only 8 episodes is really disappointing, but spose you have to start somewhere. Bring back the 15-20 episode seasons at an hr a piece I say!

So far so good.

It wasn't very pleasant.

You can't say it was a bad series, but it wasn't good either. It was always in the car. The excitement of the series was low and intermittent. But it showed the police's duties in the city well and the police's responsibility was also beautifully shown, but is this really the case? We should ask society. In addition, the show time for each episode is very short. It doesn't give much enjoyment. We have to sit in front of the TV for at least 40 minutes. The episode ends before the chips and yogurt are finished. The actors weren't very good at their roles. And I forgot to mention that the filming wasn't interesting at all. Oh my God, we got a headache from the cameraman moving the camera so much to heighten the excitement of the show.

Great way to start the year

This being one of the first shows of 2025, hopefully sets the tone for the rest of the tv shows that will be releasing in 2025. The first episode was brutal but realistic, and I've personally never seen a police procedural show pack that much of a punch. Troian Bellisario returns after a 2 year absence from acting with an award winning performance in this show. The depth and intensity to which she portrays this character should be noted! I sincerely hope she is recognized for her dedication to her character in this show and her performance doesn't go unnoticed by the Emmy's and Golden Globes. The episodes come in a 30 minute format, which for me was the perfect length. The episodes have managed to pack a great storyline, moments of action, moments of suspense, moments of great emotion all into 30 minutes which I find quite amazing. If anyone is looking for a great police procedural show, this is the one for you. Can't wait for season 2.
