Filming actually takes place in New York City although the show depicts life and work in Chicago.
One of the joys of the show is its sharp dialogue and persuasive arguments -- it turns out this is probably because it's created by a married couple, Michelle and Robert King, who know how to write arguments between spouses authentically and entertainingly. At the same time, the show reflects on what makes marriages work or fail, and the keys appear to be patience and mutual respect. Read more about how the show represents marriage here.
