During the beginning of the millennium, there was a series of school set horror films that emerged from Korea in the midst of the genre’s explosion that had followed the J-Horror template set by the likes of “Ringu”. Horror is always a fascinating genre of cinema, as perhaps more than any other, it reflects on society, its fears and prejudices. These school set productions, whilst demonstrating all the standard jump scares and classical ghost story narratives, were also a reflection on their time. They would explore the pressures and expectations on students and the hierarchies that underpinned their place in society and by proxy their place within the educational setting. Coming a few years after that was “Death Bell” – the only horror movie to originate from Korea in 2008. Whilst horror had dipped in the box office by this time, the social aspects remained, and we get a more grand guignol take on this sub-genre.

Hulu is out with its list of new content coming in July, and highlights include the “Veronica Mars” revival and the series premiere of the new “Four Weddings and a Funeral.” We also have the list of everything that’s being removed from the streaming service at the end of July.

Season 1-3 of the original “Veronica Mars” series will be available starting July 1, so you can brush up on all the background knowledge you’ll need to fully enjoy Season 4 when it drops July 26, with Kristen Bell returning the starring role as the title character after almost 15 years. Here’s everything we know about the revival so far.

The new Mindy Kaling-produced “Four Weddings and a Funeral” series comes July 31, with “Game of Thrones” star Nathalie Emanuel in the lead role. Original star Andie MacDowell will return as a guest star.

Best news today for Brit fans of Asian horror. The hugely enjoyable Korean gorefest Death Bell (aka Gosa) is to get a U.K bow on DVD, through the newly created sub label of Terra distribution...aka Terror cotta. Death Bell was the 2008 feature debut of music video director ‘Chang’ and thankfully broke the mould on that somewhat tired - being light on long haired ghosts - formula and instead heads hell for leather into the splattery world of slash horror. Surprise news of the day. The hugely enjoyable Korean slashed Gosa (aka Death Bell) is to get a U.S release via IFC films, throught their VOD service. Death Bell brought over a million moviegoers into Korean theatre last year and has become one of Korea's highest-grossing horror films ever. The feature debut of music video director “Chang,” this high school horror focuses on the experience all students are too familiar with - exams are hell - and takes it to a very bloody extreme. A shame its only going out on Vod, but a DVD release should follow soon after. Death Bell is available from October 14th.
