Bungalow Media Chief Robert Friedman on True Crime Programming, Media Consolidation and His New Show About Hawaiian Tropic Founder Ron Rice
Image
Robert Friedman has been in the media space for decades, helping lead established companies like New Line and MTV, back when movies and television were the only game in town. The media landscape has fractured since then, with the rise of streaming services scrambling the old ways of doing business. And Friedman (everybody calls him “Bobby”), has adapted with it.

In 2013, Friedman left Radical Media, the company behind “Under African Skies” and the “Mad Men” pilot that was a pioneer in the branded content space, and decided to strike out on his own. “The velocity of change was incredible, and I felt like there must be a better way of doing things,” he said during a recent interview at his Manhattan office.

That led him to launch Bungalow Media + Entertainment, a leaner, nimbler production shingle that makes scripted and unscripted content for this new array of buyers. Bungalow recently...

Doc NYC 2024 Awards: ‘Yalla Parkour,’ ‘Stone Mountain,’ and More Among Winners
Image
The 2024 Doc NYC festival has unveiled its winners.

The critically acclaimed festival, which is the largest documentary festival in the U.S., marked one of its most successful in-person editions yet, with more than 20,000 viewers having watched films over nine days in New York alongside more than 1,500 filmmaker and industry guests participating in screenings and panels.

The juries for each respective award, along with the coveted Audience Award, had tough competition among this year’s festival.

Among eight international features, Areeb Zuaiter’s feature debut “Yalla Parkour” was selected as the winner. “Yalla Parkour” had its world premiere at the festival, and centers on young parkour athletes in Gaza who practice the sport on a “conflict-scarred” landscape.

“The jury was unanimous in its choice for best international documentary,” the Doc NYC international jury, consisting of “Bobi Wine: The People’s President” filmmaker Moses Bwayo, “Little Richard: I Am Everything” director Lisa Cortes,...

An epic tale, involving the Paris uprising and the care of youngster Cosette, this is a rousing adaptation whose cast, which also includes Eddie Redmayne and Anne Hathaway, deliver vocally as well as emotionally. The 10 Pop-Music Documentaries I Most Wish Someone Would Make
Image
Music movies are having a moment — if, indeed, they ever stopped having one. Take the pop-music biopic. There are times, like right now, when it surges in popularity, yet the form has never gone out of style. And music documentaries, a staple of the indie-film world, have only proliferated during the streaming era. This means that they have to compete for visibility, but a ton of them are getting made and (mostly) getting seen. They’ve become a happy epidemic.

A few, like “Amy” or “The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?,” are popular and vital enough to have carved out a place in the culture — and, in the case of both those films, to have inspired the creation of a biopic. I have it on good authority that when you’re trying to put together a music documentary, the prospect of it spawning a biopic can be a key selling point.

‘Oppenheimer,’ ‘The Holdovers’ Win Top Honors for Editing at Ace Eddie Awards
Image
Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” topped the dramatic feature editing category at the American Cinema Editors’ 74th Ace Eddie Awards, while “The Holdovers” won the category for best edited comedic feature during Sunday’s ceremony at UCLA’s Royce Hall.

Jennifer Lame edited “Oppenheimer,” which also took top honors at last week’s SAG Awards and Producers Guild Awards. The recent honor further cements the film’s position to take top prize at the Oscars next weekend. But she faces competition from Kevin Tent, who won here for “The Holdovers.”

Should Lame go on to win the Oscar, it will mark nine years since a woman has won. Margaret Sixel won in 2015 for “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

Tent, also president of Ace, kicked off the ceremony addressing last year’s labor strikes, saying, “It’s great to look out and see so many rock star editors…Last year was an extraordinarily...

Cinema Audio Society Awards: Oscar frontrunner ‘Oppenheimer’ wins with sound mixers
Image
The Cinema Audio Society Awards gave a boost to the Oscar hopes of “Oppenheimer” on Saturday. The film took top honors at these precursor prizes that honor sound mixing over one of its Oscar rivals for Best Sound — “Maestro”– as well as “Barbie,” “Ferrari,” “and “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

The upcoming Oscars mark the fourth year for the Best Sound category, which combines Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. The Cas honors the latter while the Motion Picture Sound Editors salute achievements in the former.

Last year all five of the society’s favorites — “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Batman,” “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick” — sounded good to the academy’s sound branch. “Top Gun: Maverick” won both awards.

In 2022, four of the five Cas nominees — “Dune,” “No Time to Die,” “The Power of the Dog” and “West Side Story” — went on to contend at the Oscars.

Ebertfest Announces 25th Anniversary Edition: ‘Star 80’ to Open Festival, ‘The Best Man’ Tapped as Centerpiece Feature (Exclusive)
Image
Roger Ebert’s Film Festival, also known as Ebertfest, is celebrating its 25th anniversary by hosting screenings of Bob Fosse’s most polarizing film and one of Malcolm D. Lee’s most beloved movies.

The annual celebration of movies, which is named for the famous critic, will run April 17 to April 20 at the historic Virginia Theatre in Champaign, Ill. It will kick off with an opening night screening of Fosse’s “Star 80,” a look at the life and brutal murder of Playboy model Dorothy Stratten that divided reviewers when it opened in 1983, with some seeing it as as exploitative and others believing it was a masterpiece. Ebert was certainly in the latter camp, praising the film with a glowing four-star review, calling it “an important movie…Devastating, violent, hopeless, and important, because it holds a mirror up to a part of the world we live in, and helps us see it more clearly.

Sundance Buyers Are Ready to Feed Theaters. Here’s What That Could Mean at the Box Office
Image
This year, Sundance saw big deals go down for “A Real Pain”, “It’s What’s Inside”, “Presence” (Neon), and “My Old Ass” as well as smaller acquisitions for “Kneecap” (Sony Pictures Classics), “Ghostlight” (IFC Films), and “Ibelin”(Netflix).

It’s not the same bull market as the old days, but we’ll take it. And while streamers made their presence felt with the two largest acquisitions to date, it’s clear that for most of these films theatrical will be part of their lifecycles. But is that a smart move?

Based on last year’s results, the answer is: Could be. Domestic box office from all Sundance 2023 films was the best for any year since Covid. At around $100 million, it quadrupled the take from 2022 Festival titles (around $25 million). All told, about two thirds of the 2023 films have some sort of domestic distribution, including streaming outlets. Of these, about a dozen films have yet to open.
