Greg Berlanti Nabs Series Order for Horror Drama ‘Stillwater’ at Amazon
Image
Greg Berlanti is getting back into the writers room.

The mega-producer has three projects, at three different streamers, in various stages of development — including a series order for Stillwater, based on the horror comic of the same name, at Amazon’s Prime Video. Berlanti is also developing a high school mystery series at Hulu and a family drama at Max.

All three projects come from Warner Bros. TV, where Berlanti has a rich overall deal and has been his studio home for most of his career.

Stillwater and the Hulu project, Foster Dade, will also mark Berlanti’s first teleplay credits in several years. While the prolific producer has a “developed by” or creator credit on many of the shows his eponymous company has produced — including most of The CW’s Arrow-verse series — he hasn’t had a writing credit since the early days of You, which is now wrapping its run on Netflx.

Greg Berlanti Sets Skybound Comic Adaptation ‘Stillwater’ at Amazon, ‘Foster Dade’ at Hulu
Image
Greg Berlanti has set up multiple projects across multiple streamers on which he will serve as co-writer, Variety has confirmed.

Although Berlanti remains one of the most prolific producers in Hollywood via his Warner Bros. TV-based Berlanti Productions, the most recent show on which he was credited as a writer was “Superman & Lois,” which debuted in 2021.

First up, Berlanti and Carly Wray are set as writers and executive producers on the horror thriller “Stillwater,” based on the Skybound comic book of the same name by Chip Zdarsky and Ramon K. Perez.

The official logline for the show states, “When ex-con Daniel West receives a mysterious letter promising answers about his past and a substantial inheritance in the small town of Stillwater, he discovers a community where nothing ever ages, no one ever dies, and nobody ever gets out.”

Executive producing for Skybound Entertainment are Robert Kirkman, David Alpert, Rick Jacobs,...

Greg Berlanti Gets ‘Stillwater’ Series Order At Amazon, Sets ‘Foster Dade’ At Hulu & Eyes Max Series In Return To TV Writing
Image
Exclusive: How is this for continuity — as the last of the current series created/co-created by Greg Berlanti, You, is topping Netflix’s charts with its just-released final season, he is readying his next series — next three, that is, including Stillwater, which has been picked up by Amazon. Focusing on development and returning to writing over the past several months, Berlanti has set up the three high-profile new projects — all co-written by him — through Berlanti Prods. and Warner Bros. Television, where the company is based.

In a bidding war, Amazon has landed mind-bending horror thriller Stillwater, based on the Skybound comic book series by Chip Zdarsky and Ramon K. Perez, with a series order. Berlanti and Carly Wray (Watchmen) are adapting, with Skybound Entertainment (The Walking Dead) producing.

Hulu had bought spec script Foster Dade, written by Berlanti and Bash Doran (Life After Life), which is being fast-tracked for a pilot order,...

Image
Spoiler warning: This article discusses the ending of “Conclave”

Nick Emerson was doing his job, sitting in an editing room in London, when he found out that he was up for an Oscar. He received one of the eight nominations for Edward Berger’s “Conclave,” which also scored nods for Best Picture and Best Actor (Ralph Fiennes).

“I just couldn’t believe it,” said Emerson, a first-time nominee for his work on the stylish Vatican potboiler. “We all jumped up and down and screamed. It’s a wonderful honor and I was definitely walking around in a bit of a daze for a couple of days afterwards.”

Emerson’s two decades of credits include “Eileen,” “Lady Macbeth” the TV series “Life After Life,” plus Berger’s forthcoming “The Ballad of a Small Player,” a thriller set in Macau, starring Colin Farrell and Tilda Swinton. His filmography is chock full of...

The Kitchen Review: Daniel Kaluuya’s Directorial Debut Is a Big Sci-Fi Swing
Image
For more than a few years now, Daniel Kaluuya has been at the forefront of great and allegorical science fiction: Get Out, Nope, even Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. His collaborations with talents like Jordan Peele and Ryan Coogler have burrowed into the minds of audiences with all the clarity of a spoon smacking a teacup. However, in his own mind, there turns out to be an even more oppressive sci-fi vision. And it’s one with brutal timeliness, and no cathartic Tsa in sight.

The Kitchen, which marks the directorial feature debut of both Kaluuya and Kibwe Tavares, is a project the two of have been dreaming about since a fortuitous barbershop discussion; they took the concept to Sundance in 2016 when, well before Get Out’s release, The Kitchen was selected for the Sundance Institute’s Screenwriting and Directing Lab; and now the idea has become hard and easily accessible...

Netflix’s Fool Me Once Cast: Michelle Keegan, Richard Armitage, Adeel Akhtar, Joanna Lumley
Image
It’s here, the newest Netflix thriller adapted from one of Harlan Coben’s ludicrously twist-packed, secret-filled crime mystery novels. This one comes adapted by Danny Brocklehurst with the same UK team that made The Five, Safe, The Stranger and Stay Close, and once again stars Richard Armitage in a central role.

Fool Me Once is the story of military helicopter pilot Maya Stern, a captain who loses her career in a scandal and suffers two bereavements in short succession. It’s fast-paced, kind of ridiculous viewing that takes you down an extremely twisty path before tying everything up in a big not-exactly-watertight-but-it’ll-do-fine knot – which makes it pretty perfect viewing for a brain-fogged New Year’s Day after all of December’s indulgences.

Find out more about the cast of this one below, and happy binge-watching!

20 Questions On Deadline Podcast: Sian Clifford On New Netflix Show ‘Unstable’, Her Secret Crush & Life After ‘Fleabag’

My guest this week is Sian Clifford.

Her delicately balanced, tragi-comic portrayal of the brilliantly deadpan Claire in smash hit series Fleabag both won her a Bafta and allowed her to utter the immortal words, “I look like a pencil” in reference to Claire’s legendary hair mishap. In short, Clifford made an indelible mark on viewers.

Among some of her post-Fleabag roles: starring opposite Matthew Macfadyen in Quiz, as one half of the couple accused of cheating on UK gameshow Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?; playing mother to Thomasin McKenzie’s character in the BBC TV adaptation of Kate Atkinson’s novel Life After Life, and starring with Saoirse Ronan in the film See How They Run.

Clifford’s latest role is in Unstable, a new Netflix comedy series created by and starring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe, executive produced by Victor Fresco of My Name is Earl fame.

"UnPrisoned"'s Tracy McMillan on How Growing Up With an Incarcerated Father Inspired the Hit Show
Image
Hulu's "UnPrisoned" is the unconventional father-daughter story we've yet to see on television, but it's a necessary watch that speaks to a lot of real-world topics. The heartwarming dramedy - created and executive produced by Tracy McMillan - premiered on the streamer on March 10, introducing viewers to a "messy but perfectionist relationship therapist and single mom" named Paige (played by Kerry Washington), "whose life is turned right-side-up when her dad, [Edwin], (Delroy Lindo) gets out of prison and moves in with her and her teenage son, Finn (Faly Rakotohavana)."

"UnPrisoned" takes a half-serious look at the after-effects of America's criminal justice system, mixing humor and heart to address a reality McMillan tells Popsugar many people face every day. "We're showing a Black family and an experience that has not been seen on television before," she says. "We've seen people in prison and we've seen people going to prison, but...

Breaking Baz: ‘Ted Lasso’ Star To Lead Hot London Production Of ‘Romeo And Juliet’ Alongside ‘Red Rose’ Actress Isis Hainsworth

Exclusive: Toheeb Jimoh, who plays AFC Richmond’s goal-scoring Sam Obisanya on Ted Lasso will tackle rhyming couplets when he and Red Rose actress Isis Hainsworth play William Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers in what’s expected to be a sizzler of a Romeo and Juliet production in London this summer.

The scorching heat comes from its director Rebecca Frecknall, associate director of north London’s Almeida Theatre. She lit up the West End with an acclaimed 2021 revival of Kander and Ebb’s Cabaret at the Playhouse Theatre, now transformed into the Kit Kat Club.

Florence Pugh And Andrew Garfield To Lead Romantic Comedy We Live In Time
Image
Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield took the internet by storm (as they should!) after presenting together at the Oscars ceremony this year. Tweets were exchanged and a lot of feelings were felt. And now it's been announced (via Deadline) that the pair will co-star in a new project together a romantic comedy film titled "We Live In Time."

It's a pleasant change from their recent filmography. Pugh appeared in a multitude of different genre-bending roles — Ari Aster's horror film "Midsommar," Olivia Wilde's "Don't Worry Darling," along with her superhero responsibilities in Marvel Studios' "Black Widow" and "Hawkeye." Garfield was recently seen in Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Tick, Tick... Boom!," Michael Showalter's "The Eyes of Tammy Faye," and his terrific television outing in Hulu's "Under the Banner of Heaven." The performers haven't appeared in a romantic comedy in a very long while, and this one's certainly shaping up to be an exciting project.

The film is Norway's submission to the Best International Feature category at the 95th Academy Awards; the country's previous submission, Joachim Trier's The Worst Person in the World, was one of only a few international films to receive a nomination that year.

The score for War Sailor was composed by Volker Bertelmann, an Oscar-nominated pianist and composer from Germany. Peter Capaldi and Jessica Raine in The Devil's Hour (2022)
Warning: contains Major spoilers for The Devil’s Hour finale.

To say that The Devil’s Hour packed a lot in to its six-hour story would be an understatement. There was a serial killer thriller, a ghostly horror, a child abduction mystery, a love story, a gangland crime tale and a family drama… all wrapped up in existential Nietzschean philosophy. By the end, it was a little of Life After Life plus a little of The Time Traveler’s Wife plus a little of Quantum Leap plus a little of Marcella plus a lot of other ideas given not quite enough room to breathe. As a result some viewers could well be left thinking… what?

With major spoilers (please don’t read on until you’ve watched it all) for the finale and everything that came before, here’s our best attempt to break down just what went on, what we know, and...

Life After Life (2022)
Life After Life Review: a Delicate, Life-Affirming Adaptation
Life After Life (2022)
Life After Life, Kate Atkinson’s acclaimed 2013 novel that’s now a four-part BBC drama, is founded on the bruising truth that existence is unbearably fragile. Its world, our world, is a dangerous place pitted with obstacles. It’s the story of Ursula, a character born in 1910, who dies and is reborn in a continuous loop. Each time Ursula falls foul of life’s lethal traps, she begins again, not remembering her lives before but not quite forgetting them either. Her past deaths leave her with tugging instincts – don’t step there, don’t take his hand, don’t linger – that gradually extend her life and, if well-managed, those of the people she loves.

For Ursula, death waits in all places – in the knot of umbilical cord around a baby’s neck, inside a rolling wave and beneath an open window. Death waits equally in a pandemic and in wartime...

Disability Access Outfit TripleC Wins BAFTA Honor, Mel Giedroyc to Host Craft Awards Ceremony – Global Bulletin

Awards

TripleC, a gateway organization that helps deaf, disabled, and neurodiverse people access the arts and media, will receive a BAFTA TV Craft Special Award during the British Academy Television Craft Awards. Actor Cherylee Houston (“Coronation Street”) founded TripleC and with a group of friends including Melissa Johns (“Grantchester”), they have built a platform for making the creative screen industry more inclusive.

Johns and Houston said: “When we set up this organization five years ago, we were just a group of disabled and non-disabled creatives coming together to see if we could make a change. I don’t think we ever knew the size of impact that that seed of an organization would have on the lives of so many deaf, disabled and/or neurodivergent creatives. The recognition from BAFTA will support our drive for change and help ensure accessibility and inclusivity is high up on every agenda.”

BAFTA Winners Slam Existential Threat to Channel 4, BBC: ‘Extremely Frightening and Very Worrying’ (Exclusive)
Image
Two of the most respected practitioners working in the entertainment industry have slammed the U.K. government’s ongoing plans for broadcasters Channel 4 and BBC.

Earlier this month, U.K. Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries confirmed plans to sell Channel 4, citing the need to compete with the global streamers and saying that the proceeds of the sale would be put into independent production and creative skills in priority parts of the country.

Sections of the industry did not take kindly to the plan, leading to arguments and counter-arguments in the U.K. media.

Tessa Ross, BAFTA winner for outstanding British contribution to cinema, whose credits include “Billy Elliott,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Last King of Scotland,” “Ex Machina” and “Room,” and who has served as controller of film and drama at Channel 4, and as British Film Institute and National Film and Television School governor, is one of those unhappy with the decision.
