awesome, absolutely awesome. at 52 episodes, even w/o English subtitle you must see the series. intense and visual as American t.v. never has been, with cinematography superior to most international films. read a little history of the ch'uang kuantung and the mukden incident, turn on your DVD player, and wish you could understand the dialog conversations here. one drawback-a soundtrack w. music that simply cannot come close to matching above average acting and superior set design, composition, etc.
unbelievable that a work of this caliber could be produced locally for broadcast media. it is easy to understand the impression made in china as the series progressed and the full tale of zhu kaishan's family from 1904 through 1931 is unveiled. you watch this frontier spirit of early years give way with social progress, an appearance of automobiles and the coming of global conflict with wwii. all worthwhile, despite the tragic end.
