Chang Can Dunk doesn’t go the way you’d expect, and that’s a good thing.

A funny and thoughtful high school comedy.

The filmmaker, making his feature debut, also has more interesting things in mind, delivering a darker, more complex story that nonetheless proves utterly heartwarming by the end.

Chang Can Dunk gets that the pursuit of fun, seemingly frivolous goals can be meaningful in itself, especially when undertaken with the loving encouragement of friends and family.

It’s more a layup than a slam dunk qualitatively, rattling around a bit before finally paying off.
