My friends and I went to a theater in downtown Salt Lake City to see this and all thought it was a terrific horror. It was a long time ago but I think an amputated hand was a cause of bad luck. When I moved to where I live now we found the lower leg of a horse or a donkey. It reminded me of the monkey's paw but I thought it was grotesque and that it was a good idea not to be superstitious. After a few years I had a series of heart attacks and had ro be hospitalized for approximately a month. I've never felt such pain and consider the monkey paw might be a graven image or be the carrier of a tropical disease.

Herb Graham, wife Evelyn Coffman, and son Robb Wilson King, live a quiet, modest, contented life. But when an old friend brings a talisman like a monkey's paw, he leaves it with them with an explanation that it will grant three wishes; and advice they don't use them.
W. W. Jacobs' classic short story was first published in 1902 and was soon dramatized. It has been adapted for the motion pictures and television screen many time, almost always at lengths not exceeding 30 minutes. That is a good thing. The simplicity of the story and the lack of details surrounding the events gives it a universality that greater length would, of necessity, remove. As this one is, at 18 minutes, it offers its message of sorrow and terror very effectively.
