The New York Asian Film Festival is celebrating a true Master of Action. The 17th annual New York Asian Film Festival closed July 15 after two weeks of boasting four world premieres, 21 North American premieres, and 12 New York premieres. Produced by Subway Cinema and the Film Society at Lincoln Center, the Nyaff aims to showcase Asian cinematic excellence, and to expose audiences to non-Eurocentric, emotionally compelling, and provocative Asian film. The festival kicked off June 29 with the North American premiere of celebrated Japanese director Masanori Tominaga’s “Dynamite Graffiti,” an idiosyncratic drama about the Japanese pornography publisher Suei Akira. For its closing, the festival chose box office darling Erik Matti’s “BuyBust,” an action film starring megawatt actor Anne Curtis and Mma world champion Brandon Vera, all of whom attended the screening. It’s a great time for Chinese cinema with homegrown productions dominating the local box office.

Action thriller “Operation Mekong” won the box office charts with $77 million in sales during the national weeklong holiday, according to the film industry-consulting firm Artisan Gateway.

In the second spot was Yibai Zhang’s romantic comedy “I Belonged to You”. Stop motion film “L.O.R.D.: Legend of Ravaging Dynasties” by Jingming Guo placed Number 3 in the box office. Jing Wong’s action comedy “Mission Milano” followed in fourth place. “The Wild Life” is the only non-Chinese movie that made the top five.

Operation Mekong conquered all these films thanks to its nationalistic theme and its action guru director Dante Lam of “Beast Stalker” and “That Demon Within” fame.

La Times praised the filmmaker saying “(Dante) Lam packs the movie with white-knuckle action sequences, set in eye-catching locations, teeming with extras.”

It wasn't so long ago - just back as the 2000's rolled into double digits - that Hong Kong's Dante Lam made the transition from being a journeyman jobbing director into one of the world's finest purveyors of large scale, hyper kinetic action cinema. 2008 effort Beast Stalker led the charge with 2010 releases Fire Of Conscience and Stool Pigeon seeming to seal the deal to the point that he was being regularly name dropped in the company of John Woo and Johnnie To and not feeling at all out of place. It is great to see Nick Cheung returning to comedy following a string of hit thrillers like Beast Stalker, Stool Pigeon, Unbeatable and The White Storm. Many of the actor's early film roles were actually in comedies and films such as The Conman and The Duel prove how good a comic actor he is. Following previous announcements of their film lineup, the Fantasia International Film Festival has released their full lineup of movies to be shown at the 18th Annual festival, starting July 17.

New additions to the lineup include 2014 Cannes Selection When Animals Dream, directed by Jonas Alexander Amby and the return of Fantasia’s showcase of animated films, Axis.

Tickets for the festival go on sale starting July 16, and the festival runs through August 5.

Maggie Cheung alert!

She walked the Taiwanese red carpet today in this white number to your left. She was presenting Best Picture at the Golden Horse Awards. The Golden Horse is Taiwanese in origin but it's for Chinese language films regardless of country of origin so it's very competitive now. Warlords and Lust, Caution, which both had international releases, were recent winners of Best Picture.

This year, Maggie handed the trophy to No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti which, if we ever see it in the States, might be called I Can't Live Without You or Not Without You. That's Taiwan's submission for this year's Foreign Language Film Oscar race. The film is from actor/director Leon Dai and it's about a poor man who loses his daughter once the government learns of their illegal living conditions.
