Good twist, fun horror film.

The acting and some elements are a little corny and cheap. HOWEVER, it's a fun horror film that has some twists, CREEPY parts and keeps you engaged the whole time.

Gwen picks up a one time cash job to take the night shift at an old motel, after not getting much sleep while moving cross country. It's a pretty dirty joint and ran down. She starts to see and experience a lot of creepy stuff, she starts to wonder if she's seeing things because she's sleep deprived. Things continue to get weirder, getting odd customers, phone calls, etc.

Definitely worth a watch if you're looking for something horror with a fun twist and a little dark humor thrown in.

Had potential for more...

When I sat down to watch the 2023 movie "Night Shift", from writers and directors Benjamin China and Paul China, I had never actually heard about the movie, so I didn't know what I was in for. But with it being a horror movie that had eluded me, of course I opted to sit down and watch it.

I wasn't familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list, aside from Madison Hu and Patrick Fischler, and that is something I do enjoy when I sit down to watch a movie. The acting performances were good, and it was a rather interesting character gallery for sure.

And while the trope of a remote, somewhat creepy motel (or even hotel in some movies) have been used in an abundance in the horror genre throughout the years, it is still a setting that works and sets the foundation for an interesting setting.

Writers and directors Benjamin China and Paul China did cash in on the stereotypical horror tropes, but it worked out well enough. However, it made very little room for surprises along the way, making "Night Shift" a somewhat predictable viewing experience.

"Night Shift", while watchable, just wasn't an outstanding horror movie. And thus, it will most likely never grace my screen a second time. However, I will say that it is worth checking out.

My rating of "Night Shift" lands on a five out of ten stars.

Promising with a bad ending

I was prepared to waste an hour and a half on a Saturday night with this one but it turned out this was pretty good for about two thirds of the film and easily worth six stars (or more). Solid acting by Phoebe Tonkin, Lamorne Morris, Madison Hu, and well, pretty much the whole cast. Everyone played their part with gusto on conviction. There really was a perfect balance between humor, suspense and apprehension throughout the film. My reason for 3 stars is 'the big twist' in the story. The last few minutes were a complete disaster IMHO and although the directors thought they were being clever, let's face it, we are not that dumb.

Just nice

It's a low-budget film, with a simple idea, simple actors, not very interesting characters and little blood, however, it's entertaining as much as possible and delivers an interesting ending.

There are much better films that take place in roadside hotels, like Vacancy from 2007, but this film here is actually cool. It's simple, but not terrible. The biggest problem, in my opinion, is that the film often doesn't find its genre! He goes through a lot of comedy, drama, suspense and horror, and never gets what he really wants to get right.

As positive points, I highlight the main actress who works well in the character, the scare scenes with rats and the ending which is a bit surprising and fun.

One of the best horror movies I've watched recently

Horror movie made in 2023. First of all, let me say that I liked it. I opened the movie without great expectations. The thriller elements were very good. The atmosphere was gloomy and creepy. Clichés were used beautifully. The story also made a great twist. It's a horror movie that I watched with interest recently and liked it.

The story takes place in a hotel on the road. A girl starts her night shift duty here. He works alone and witnesses many frightening things.

Compared to a lot of ridiculous horror movies, this movie really doesn't make you regret it.

There is no sexuality or nudity in the movie.

Mostly uneventful and predictable

In 2023's Night Shift we are introduced to a young woman who is tackling her first night shift in a remote motel. When she was young her mother and her sisters got killed by a serial killer and apparently the motel is haunted. Therefore she spends most of the night walking around being scared of pretty much everything.

Sadly that is most of the plot. We get some side characters that don't have much to do and there are a few lame jumpscares scattered throughout the movie. The movie is pretty slow paced and there's not much to see, making it a rather boring watching experience. There are some humorous scenes that I didn't mind and also the acting was decent.

In the end I thought that the movie was pretty predictable and did not have any tricks up its sleeve. Also without spoiling anything I think the ending didn't make much sense but you can see that for yourself if you want. I think it's a below average movie that is slow paced and mostly uneventful, even though it has a semi-interesting premise. [4,9/10]

It's imperfect, but I ended up enjoying it

This filled its purpose as a slasher horror film and Phoebe Tonkin is quite electrifying on screen- I'm ready to watch more of her works. This film really blows a lot of the Blumhouse Production movies out of the water.

Certainly the film is a slow burn, off beat, and was filmed on a low budget, but the payoff is huge once the twist is revealed. The end scene also tied everything together.

I was prepared to nit-pick character decisions or some of the dark comedy scenes (for instance the oddball married couple who wanted a room for recreational activities), but I sat back and accepted the movie for what it was. It was an adventurous independent movie that could be enjoyed by casual and diehard horror fans alike.

But hey, it's free!

Caught this on Prime during a rainy day and since there was nothing else on... Since I have seen Lamorne Morris on TV since Jeff Lewis remodeled his pool house, I was excited to see his newer work.

Here's my elevator pitch...chick traveling takes an under the table job working the night shift at a modern day version of the Bates Motel. Spooky antics ensue, chick makes friends with cutie Asian tenant chick, girl-bonding takes place...nothing to worry about, right? Wrong!!!

What's that sound, a ghost??? Maybe?

I won't wreck the ending for you, because honestly it's worth watching if you've got the time to kill. But don't expect any groundbreaking new storylines.

If you go into things with no expectations, you'll come out happy, it's really a fun, campy horror flick.

Lamorne, I need a ride to bingo Thursday, hmu!!!

Night Shift

Gwen (Phoebe Tonkin) is a newbie in the area. She has got a job working the night shift in an old grotty motel called the All Tucked Inn.

Thye owner Teddy (Lamorne Morris) wants someone urgently as he is on a date that night.

Gwen is creeped out of the place as Teddy was not expecting her early. He gives her a tour of the place. The place is not even deserving of a one star ranking on Tripadvisor. There is a sinkhole where the pool was. The cabins are rundown and there might be rats crawling about.

Later Gwen finds out that the hotel might also be haunted. Gwen is certainly having strange visions. Not helped that there is a news announcement of a dangerous prisoner that has escaped.

Night Shift is the directorial debut of the British twins, the China Brothers. It treads the well worn path of the psycho killer chiller.

It starts off unnervingly but becomes immensely predictable. It was never going to be The Shining or Psycho but rips off from both movies. It is well acted and for a low budget movie and it has good production values.

Predictable

Being a predictable movie could be a good thing, if you are the "I told you so", kind of person when you are at the movies, that is...if your friends can stand you.

The thing here, is that everything has been seen in other movies, series, anthologies and that is because it's always entertaining.

Motels, Hotels, no matter how big or small, expensive or cheap have that creepy atmosphere that makes your imagination run wild, just thinking about what is going on next door, could be exhilarating.

This movie is not Psycho, or The Shining, but it's entertaining and fun to watch.

A lot of plot holes, but I liked it.

An Acceptable Film

This is a good movie if you just want to watch something moderately entertaining on the cheap... but don't expect anything above that because you're not really going to be getting that. This is a pretty moderate and alright movie; it's not great, but not terrible either.

What you're going to get is a movie with a functional, albeit wonky at parts, story with alright characters that can give off some entertaining sequences and performances, and it does have a cool aesthetic with a pretty good setting of a motel in the middle of nowhere.

The movie has your expected tropes of whisper talking, references to other media, comedic relief sequences peppered throughout the movie, jump scare sequences, and an ending that you'd expect from a movie like this today. The movie does pull a considerable amount from Psycho and The Shining, which is fine. The only part that might not be good is that SOME scares last way too long, to the point that they're more goofy than scary.

Overall, this is okay. At best, it's decent enough, and it's ho-hum at worst. If you have a few dollars to spend, and an hour and a half to kill for the night with some friends or loved ones, then you could perhaps spend it on this... I'll give it a very light recommendation...

Apparently, this is a directorial debut from The China Brothers and, if this is just a showcase of skills and abilities, then I suppose it's cool... I guess this is just to show that they can get the job done... hopefully they go on to bigger and better things!

6.4/10. Underrated.

Why this rating? I have seen much worse horror movies with higher rating, NIGHT SHIFT is definitely not a 5.4/10 movie. This is a decent horror movie which made me invest and it almost had me on the edge of my seat until the ending. I agree with many reviewers who said that the ending was not that good. I would have rated it higher, probably near to 7/10, if it had ended better. However, it was not that bad either. At least, writers presented a proper epilogue for this story and not something ambiguous, as many writers choose to do because they don't have a clue how to end their story.

Furthermore, it's not a pure horror movie. I wouldn't call it a comedy/horror, it's still horror but there is a comedy element here from time to time. This is one of those horror movies which are a "fun ride", you don't watch them to have nightmares, just to have a good time. Like ABIGAIL, or the second half of BARBARIAN.

Better than average acting, well directed, some scary scenes and a plot without holes which could have a better epilogue as i said, but still, it didn't ruin the whole movie.

Really exceeded my expectations (don't listen to the bad reviews)

So this is probably a solid 8/10 for me but I put 10 to offset all the bad reviews and try to bring up the score a bit because this movie deserves better...

Ironically, my wife picked this one out and I went in thinking it was gonna be awful. I watched the trailer and it just seemed like a cheesy horror with too much comedy that cuts its own tension. While I was right that the comedy in the beginning and in some other places throughout was a bit misplaced and subverted what could have made this movie a 10 (more on that later) other than that I was very wrong about this movie because it was a great watch. Especially in a time when we are swimming in a limitless ocean of drivel when it comes to all the movies coming out these days, this one was a pleasant surprise.

People complaining about it changing directions and throwing you off seem to miss what makes this movie awesome.

I think that if it had been written with a more serious intro and tone throughout, this could have been one of the all time greats...

I had fun. Exceeded expectations. Would watch again.

They Twist Takes the Wind Out of Its Sails

This is a slow burn horror mystery about a girl who gets a night shift job at a psycho-like motel. There is only one guest when she starts and soon she believes that a guy who killed her family years ago, is stalking her there. She also comes to believe the place is haunted.

It's not a bad movie. It's pretty watchable even though it takes its time moving the action forward. The acting is good, even if you will be wondering why everyone is talking so slow and is so weird.

It's fairly well and competently directed and the story is sort of interesting. Until we get toward the end and there's this twist. I didn't predict it, but it's a bit of a let down.

And wait! It's not over. They capped another 10 minutes when the movie is over just in case you didnt get enough of the shenanigans.

It's probably worth a watch if you have nothing to do. It won't scare the pants off you and I was wishing the pants were scared off the female lead because she's kinda crazy hot.

Very predictable, and unoriginal.

The acting is not the worst but also not good, it is feels forced, and the girl is acting extremely weird from the get go, to the point that me being the manager, I would just rough it and not hire her.

The movie goes medium-paced, the "haunting" feels forced from the get go.

The "Scares" are cliched at all points, and the "twists" are not very good, especially the "master" twist at the end,

Using the tired trope of "It was all in her head" mental health issues, and of course, the dumb moves of everyone.

Especially the doctor twist is just not believable, especially when he is chasing a deranged sociopath, yeah, of course, I am going to go meet her alone, with no backup, excepting 2 weak and seemingly unprofessional psych ward guards...

The whole movie has you rolling your eyes hard half the time.

Could have been good

The film had potential, but there were several factors that didn't make it work. First of all, it shows that it's a directorial debut, as the direction left much to be wanted. Continuity errors is one of such culprits. Second, the lead actor can't act in progressions, and although rest of the movie she did do passively good, at the end, her acting seemed as if she was trying too hard. Next, odd background music choices seemed amateur. The film was only good in parts, and couldn't help itself from doing repetitive tropes. Let's talk about the twist; homage to the other movie (SI) was a bit half baked, but even that would have been good, but sudden tonal shift was way too sudden.

Now the film has its moments, I'll give it that. Tension building both with visuals and sound are generally done well. I really liked the supporting cast; good work there.

All in all, it could have done better with more runtime and more meticulousness.

Smart, Scary and fun

Loved this little indie horror. The creepy story had me guessing at every turn. Never saw the ending coming. It was executed superbly. Lamorne was hilarious. Adored all those moments of levity throughout. Phoebe was so well cast. She conveyed a great layer of someone on the run, while dealing with the unpredictable events of working at a small run down spooky motel. Madison was great too. She's having a great run with the Boogeyman and The Brothers Sun recently. Also loved all the little nods to horror films throughout. The filmmakers knew what they were doing. Excited to see what they do next!

Needed more gore.

The first part of this film is engaging enough.

As you try to unravel the mystery of what is set to happen.

However...the way it all plays out is relatively lackluster.

And leaves you wishing it had more to offer.

Because the film is wholly reliant upon it's twist.

But what ensues from that point on, just isn't explosive enough to make it all worthwhile.

Mainly, because the oppourtunities that present themselves tend to be glared over.

While the development of the main character wasn't adequate enough to make you care.

In short...it needed more gore to be better.

That's really the only thing that could have salvaged this.

Because, as it stands, it's just not worth a watch.

3 out of 10.
