Hurry Doctor!

Bimbo is in a rush to see his girl friend, but his car is ill. Fortunately, the doctor administers a dose of Texaco Motor Oil, and the car perks right up.

Half product placement, half industrial film, Texaco is listed as co-producing this. It was not a brand new arrangement; Lever Brothers had the Lumieres insert their Sunlight Soap in LAVEUSES in 1896, and every cartoon factory during the sound era produced industrial films; some, in fact, like Jam Handy, produced only industrial films.

The copy that I saw had to be restored by Tommy Joe Stathes and the Steve Stanchfield at Thunderbean Animation. The Texaco billboard that features prominently had been scratched out and had to be configured by taking bits and pieces from several frames.

Bimbo the dog is late as his alarm clock fails to wake him up. His girl is left waiting. He struggles to start his car. He calls his doctor to fix his car. It needs a good helping of Texaco Motor Oil which also gets Bimbo moving.

I like the designs and the characterizations. The action is a little slow. The animators take their time with some of the scenes. I love the gate bit. The director is Dave Fleischer and obviously funded by Texaco. The product placement is too blatant for modern taste but that's the method back in the day. At least, it's not cigarettes.
