A Good Update and Should be Watched: Overall an Enjoyable Mystery Series

I have been a Hardy Boys fan since I was ten and bought The Tower Treasure in 1956 at our local department store. In the first few Hardy Boy books, the boys rode motorcycles and carried 45's. As I continued to read the series, the boys became somewhat more wholesome. And younger, in the first few books Frank was 18 and Joe was 17; suddenly they were 16 and 15. Strangely, the age shift didn't bother me as the adventure kept me in thrall.

I like this version even though the city name is wrong, it should be Bayport; and I'm not happy with the age difference between Frank and Joe. The story here is good with some genuine mystery and menace. It's as much Hardy Boys as any and better than any of the other TV series that borrowed the name. I hope for a second series, but I fear a few of the actors will age out quickly.

I used to write fan letters to F.W.Dixon in care of the publisher. Someone always wrote back, and the letters were signed, F. W. Dixon. My son read my collection of books. And now I am hoping my grandchildren will read the books and become fans. Maybe watching the Hulu version of The Hardy Boys will spark an interest.

I do have few problems with this series. The story is good and the acting is fine. However, I have some casting issue. Rohan Campbell, who is 23, looks 30 and is too old for Frank Hardy. Alexander Elliot, Joe Hardy, looks 16 and not 12 and should be Frank. And Bea Santos, Aunt Trudy, who is 30 and looks 20 and should be dating Frank. Other than that, I do like the series. It has a nice noir quality to it that helps create just the right atmosphere.

And for the truly ancient, like me, watch for grandmother Gloria. She is played by Linda Thorson, who had the unenviable job of replacing Diana Rigg, Mrs.Emma Peel, on The Avengers. The TV show staring Rigg and Patrick Macnee as John Steed. "Mrs.Peel, we're needed."

Brings back memories

Growing up in 1960s Britain FW Dixon's (nom de plume) Hardy Boys books were not recommended by teachers, who considered them vulgar. Just the information we needed to secretly read them ALL, along with Blyton & WE Johns. So it's delightful to see the Hardy adventures at last dramatized for a more diffuse market, though these stories will always principally be for a younger audience - and correspondingly tactful in the portrayal of sensitive issues, which is commendable. Compared with 1960 Children's TV or Odeon/Gaumot Saturday Cinema Club (aka the flea pit) this production's not bad, but it'll probably not get an Oscar either.

Fantastic mystery show not to be missed!!!!

I have been a huge fan of hardy boys since age 10 and was thrilled to hear a tv show based on them. Whilst the age of characters have been changed the story is updated with a great sense of mystery and a 80s like setting that makes working in the mysteries even more enjoyable where now days people rely on tabs and phones for indie nation which really takes the fun out of mysteries. Overall love the feel and vibe and this show is off to a great start!!! 8/10

Hardy boys

It's a good show for what it is a thriller. But I've been a huge hardy boys fan my whole life. Read my first hardy boys in 3rd grade and got hooked on reading. Before that I hated books. As I said the show is good but it's not the hardy boys. EVERYTHING has been changed from the books. I've waited for so long for them to be on screen and as a fan im disappointed. Again I like the show but it should have been called something else

80's needs to be done correctly in order to sell the illusion.

So far I am enjoying the show but there are a few issues with the 80's set dressing that needs to be corrected. The story takes place in the 80's but there are pieces of technology in the set design that break the illusion. In episode 1, the boys and their dad move to their aunts home in Bridgeport. The TV in her living room is an early 2000's Samsung Dynaflat CRT TV. In her attic there's a early 2000's VHS-C camcorder in the background of one of the shots. Also in the attic the boys use an RCA VR546, silver, center loading VCR from 2002 to watch some old home videos. All CRT TV's from that era have a very distinctive bump in the front and flat CRT's didn't arrive until the early 2000's. All VCR's from the 80's (if front loading and not top loading) always loaded from the left side of the VCR and not the center. A simple google search by whoever is doing the set dressing could help them avoid these mistakes. Overall if you can overlook these and some other errors the show is entertaining.

Hardy Boys WORTH THE WATCH

This show has an amazing full cast of characters. It does differ from the books where it's mostly just the two boys fighting through their adventures. This flushes out an entire town and multiple friends that help to solve all of the mysteries. I like how the first two seasons carried together throughout a similar storyline and it's not just two separate mysteries. There is action, detective work, explosives, magic, teen drama, and humor. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the first two seasons and I strongly look forward to the next. If the show gets canceled it will be one of the saddest TV moments of my life just watch and you'll see. Please Hulu.

Good, but not based on the book series

The TV series is based on some of the characters while it is not like the book series. It similar to the Nancy Drew tv series where they have taken the names of the book but done a whole new spin. The tv series does contain suspense and flow, but can be a bit disconnected here and there.

Not your parents Hardy Boys but an awesome show

Okay so it's not like the books exactly. And it's not like the old TV shows. But these are modern times and this show is very very good, it has it all: mystery, suspense, and adventure that make The Hardy Boys a great watch. Hidden treasure and even more. It's worth a look give it a chance. Nuff said.

Nice edgy update

In the more edgy style of Riverdale, this newest remake of the classic adventure book gives more back story to why the boys become sleuths. Also cashing in on the early 80s craze of that genre"s music and clothes. Great attraction for those of us in our 50s! Thanks for make the women more than throw-away characters!

How can season 1 be good and season 2 so bad?

This rating is for season 1 only, as season 2 is just idiotic with a lot of scenes hammered into the screen, not making any sense. The plot is just stupid and even the actors that seemed ok in season 1, well, the ones that were not changed, now seem to be bad with the forced dialogues they have to say.

I just hope season 3 is as good as season 1, if there is going to be one after the complete failure of season 2.

NOT inspired or based off the book series at all..........yet!

I don't want to rate this show yet because I want to see more. I read at the very least half of the book series when I was young including well into my teenage years and beyond. When you go to HULU and you read the description it says inspired or based off the book series............it's NOT. Even beginning from the very first episode it is NOT inspired or based off the book series. Being somebody who has read the books if I had to give this show a rating based off the few episodes I've been watching so far it would NOT be a good rating at all. I don't want to rate it yet unless I'm forced to because I want to finish watching the rest of the episodes of this first season first.

AMAZING SERIES AND AS BASED ON MY FAVORITE BOOKS, ACTING IS ALSO AMAZING

It's really very amazing series. I don't know why it isn't so much popular in Hulu, but for me it's legendary. Disappointed that some people compared it with 'Strangers Things'. Both are different- the Hardy boys went through their life's hard time, went through so much to find their mother's culprit while in stranger things the things were just strange. But some people are becoming very much straight forward by just like that comparing both the series. By the way again loved the series very much and liked the season 2.

The Hardy Boys

Neat fun, and modern twist to an old classic.

I know the show is still undecided at present, but I look forward to seeing what happens in season 2.

Love this show

We just discovered this on Netflix a couple of weeks ago and have already finished it. I'm hoping the second season will be offered on Netflix too. It is a show with a really likeable cast. It's nice to find something to watch that keeps you coming back for more but isn't overly stressful to watch.

Casting mismatch

Joe is okay in his role but not his brother. He looks too old. There are plenty of younger boys who could have played the older Hardy boy. It really does spoil it. As the main characters the two boys needed to be convincing.

Only on the first season so far but enjoying it but would much preferred the casting was right.

The rest of the cast is fine though. Story is good although not always riveting.

The writing is okay maybe not great but passable.

Acting is good mostly.

I think 7 is about right and if you're not too picky it is enjoyable.

Disappointed

I remember the announcement for this and I was so excited to see what they would make out of favorite childhood books but I was seriously whiplashed... I'm 17 and I know some people will say it's modernized or whatever....as a fan of the books I must disagree, it could be modernized yes but still with the basics of the hardy boys and what the books were actually about...I've been reading the hardy boys books since I was 5...those were the only books I would read at the time beside the Nancy drew ones so I think this show butchered the books so bad and spat in the face of the fans...they could've at least stuck to the source material...because the show is almost completely unrecognizable compared to the books...those who haven't read the books probably enjoy it but it's not for me.

Simply Amazing!

I have to assume any bad reviews are people who did not stick with the show past the first episode or two! My husband and I LOVE it! It kind of gave me a mixture of Stranger Things / Outer Banks / Rivedale vibes! I didn't read the books, and my husband did. We both enjoyed this reboot of the Hardy Boys! Sure, as with anything it doesn't follow the books to the T, but I think that is actually what gives it an edge! If we read the books, this is still something nice and refreshed and different for us! Every episode had us on the edge of oir seats! We binged all episodes of seasonn1 in 2 days !

A group of 20-somethings during the summer after 9th grade

Wait, what??!! No, this is not a remake of Welcome Back Kotter with their "Sweathogs."

It's yet another instance of 20-something actors playing 13-14-15 year olds, for some reason (except for Joe and B-Rad (latter appears to be in her early to mid-30s). Is there a critical shortage of teen actors in Hollywood? One wouldn't think so.

That being said, the mysteries are not bad and keep you hooked.

Unfortunately, the show took a hard left turn when it ventured into sci-fi/fantasy.

I have to wonder what country the reviewer is from who said teachers didn't recommend these g-rated books for being too vulgar. Not here in the States.

Not the Hardy Boys I Read

The logo is from the Hardy Boys Casefiles series. This was a slightly more mature series that debuted in the 80s that's starts off with Joe's girlfriend being murdered. This tv series of course isn't that.

It's garbage. (In this aforementioned 80s series) Joe was the more athletic one, hot headed, impulsive brother. 17. Frank was the smarter, quieter, 18 yr old. We didn't get this. We got Leave it to Beaver/Goonies.

Woeful

Apart from the terrible casting, seriously a man in his twenties playing a 16 year old. Then the godawful acting, soundtrack (tries to be Stranger Things) and then the assumptions all over the place it's ok for your granny to watch. However, changing characters sex, name's and basically no relevance to the original novels, you have to wonder why use the title in the first place?

Great family entertainment

I was scrolling through Hulu for something the whole family could watch and this caught my eye. I was a little boy when the 70's show was on and loved it. My ten year olds sounded intrigued when I described the premise so I hit play. The boys, my wife and I were hooked right away! Great mystery and fun entertainment. Can't wait for the next season!
