’15 Minutes of Shame’ Review: Monica Lewinsky’s Public Shaming Documentary Falls Flat
Image
The best parts of HBO Max’s latest documentary, “15 Minutes of Shame” have less to do with shaming and much, much more to do with the innate failures of humanity, which in effect leave viewers in a place of relative hopelessness — a shrug emoji made manifest.

Executive produced by Monica Lewinsky and Max Joseph, the film attempts to give insight into the way that the internet and social media feed into the modern methods of public shaming and the rise of “cancel culture.” Those groundswells of judgement are so vitriolic and widespread that it sometimes results in ordinary people, whether they made a mistake or were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Lewinsky knows all about going from an anonymous citizen to the center of a scandal resonating on a global stage overnight. And Joseph is no stranger to internet culture, as a filmmaker best known...

Monica Lewinsky on Exploring Public Shaming in Her New Doc and How Things Might Have Been Different Today
Image
“Ummm.” Monica Lewinsky takes a long pause. “I know this is going to sound weird. It’s a totally legitimate question. I don’t know how to answer that.” She thinks about it before finally saying: “In some ways, I just feel too close to it.”

Lewinsky is speaking about her experience with Bill Clinton, and responding to whether he would have been “canceled” had his White House affair with an intern occurred in current times.

“I would hope that we would be having a different kind of conversation,” Lewinsky says. “I would hope that most of the blame would not have rested on my shoulders, and most of the consequences.”

Nearly 25 years later, even in the post-#MeToo era, Lewinsky is not sure how differently things would have turned out today.

“This situation, I’m not sure that were it a young, charismatic, Democratic president, and one who is...

Monica Lewinsky on Pivoting to Producing, Hollywood Mentors and Her Copious Notes on ‘American Crime Story: Impeachment’
Image
“American Crime Story: Impeachment” posed a unique challenge for Monica Lewinsky.

The activist and writer had to navigate two different roles on the FX anthology series, which chronicles Bill Clinton’s 1998 impeachment following allegations that he committed perjury and obstructed justice related to an affair in the Oval Office. First, Lewinsky is the subject of the dramatized series as a White House intern (played by Beanie Feldstein) who falls in love with the president, and mistakenly shares her secret with work confidante Linda Tripp (Sarah Paulson).

Second, Lewinsky is also a producer on the show, working with the series’ creative team of Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Nina Jacobson and Sarah Burgess. It wasn’t always easy to juggle both parts for Lewinsky, who’s turned down millions of dollars, valuing her privacy above all else — especially over a quick paycheck.

“I don’t make decisions to work on things that...

HBO Trailer for '15 Minutes of Shame' Doc About Internet Shaming
15 Minutes of Shame (2021)
"Our culture is drowning in something, and we decided to understand why." HBO has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled 15 Minutes of Shame, exploring the tricky topic of cancel culture and internet shaming. Most interestingly, the HBO documentary film is narrated by and executive produced by Monica Lewinsky, someone who is definitely familiar with internet shaming. She's already written books about it and talked about it plenty before. The groundbreaking documentary 15 Minutes of Shame takes an in-depth look at the public shaming epidemic in our culture and explores our collective need to destroy one another. The film not only talks with some of those who've been shamed, but also explores the bullies, the bystanders, the media, psychologists, politicians and experts in between. Looks quite good, I must say. Even if it's just to begin the conversation about this and make us examine why it feels...

‘The View’ Host Joy Behar Stands by Past Monica Lewinsky Jokes: ‘I Don’t Regret Any Joke I Ever Did’
Joy Behar
Joy Behar is standing by her past jokes about Monica Lewinsky after a lengthy discussion on Wednesday’s episode of “The View.”

Kicking off their “Hot Topics” on Wednesday morning, Behar noted that between producing on “American Crime Story: Impeachment” and a new documentary called “15 Minutes of Shame,” Monica Lewinsky has been back in the spotlight for one of the lowlights in her life. And, now that she is, Behar posed the question of whether Lewinsky has been treated too harshly over the years for her role in then-President Bill Clinton’s White House sex scandal.

Behar reminded the panel of women that just about every comedian at the time, including herself, used Lewinsky as a punchline and made her the butt of most jokes, but that “in today’s climate, there’s something about it that doesn’t smell right.”

That said, when Behar’s co-hosts asked her...

Monica Lewinsky Talks Being ‘Patient Zero’ for Cancel Culture in ’15 Minutes of Shame’ Trailer
Image
Monica Lewinsky helps guide an investigation into the nuances of cancel culture in the new trailer for the upcoming documentary, 15 Minutes of Shame, premiering October 7th on HBO Max.

Lewinsky executive-produced the doc alongside Max Joseph, who also directed, and in the trailer’s opening moments, Lewinsky explains her involvement and understandable fascination with the subject: “Imagine waking up with the whole world talking about you because your mistake, your secret has now been made public. Trust me, I know a little something about this. I was Patient Zero...
