Don't believe the hype

Another classic sample on how a good story brought into a film. Lack of emotions, plot twist, mood, etc.

Don't get me wrong. Yes, you'll get what you read in the story. Yes, I know that's how the story goes. But usually this is how a film director being tested. How to turn a descriptive narration into a good visual (aka Cinema).

And frankly, Awi Suryadi has failed. Not 100%, but I don't see any emotion in this movie as when I read the original story. While it's good to tell A-Z in the writing format, but it lost the impact when it turned into a motion picture. Looks like he just put everything the story and the lines of the original twitter's thread into 2 hours visual without the details and plot, so it looks dull.

Good side; thumbs up for the cinematography & production crew who brought the village alive. The actors/actress also did a good job, especially Tissa Biani (Nur).

More mystery drama than horror

Adapting books (or in this case a Twitter thread), especially the popular ones, into a film can be tricky. The urge to satisfy the fans can lead to a dissatisfying result. KKN Di Desa Penari falls in this category. Instead of making a tighter plot point, the film tends to adapt its source material in a literal manner. As a result, the film suffers from an overlong narrative and somewhat wanders aimlessly for most of its runtime. Still enjoyable, but could be better.

people just want to follow the hype

The cinematography is above average even the costume design and story is far far away from reality. The scenery and the main cast are the biggest point support even the legendary BONENG is take part in this movie. Not to be disrespected but this movie is far far away to be called good horror movie that so worth to see in cinema. Maybe people who just watch just want to spend their money with friends or spending the time together. Including me :)

FULL OF MORAL MESSAGES.

Full of moral messages. Even with a familiar story, 'KKN di Desa Penari' managed to visualize most of the viral stories that only stopped in the imagination of the readers. The acting of the cast, cinematography, and appropriate background music, can make up for some of the shortcomings.

Feels Like Watching a Compilation of Clips

The film was boring, i kept checking my phone to see the time because I wanted to leave the cinema quickly. The only thing i heard throughout the entire film was a loud and annoying sound that repeated over and over. It seemed like the director intended for us, the audience, to be terrified but failed in doing so.

I couldn't bring myself to care about all of the characters because we never really got to know who they were. The dumbest thing I've ever seen is just random scenes pieced together like a compilation of clips. It didn't feel like a film at all.

The real Writing story is more interested and freaking me out.

As typical Indonesian horror film lol The film was a bit weird to watch. I like the original story it self in written by SimpleMan on Twitter than the film. But so far the actress are ok to bring the role of each characters.

Expected more of a "horror" tone

Cinematography and the casts were amazing, the whole setting and mood is spot on. But if you're a horror movie fanatic, this movie lacks on the jump scares and there were many apparent plot holes. The narrative was excruciatingly long (it felt like i was reading from the twitter thread itself) and had many unnecessary details. Kinda felt it was overhyped and truly expected more. The ending was very anti-climatic.

The Truly Indonesian Style Horor Movie

This movie contains everything that you want from a good Horror Film : Demonic Atmosphere, Mysterious Character, Chills Background etnic music and many shocking jump scare.

Awi Suryadi as a director did a very good job by translating this viral story in Twitter become a Reality on the screen, even thought they are using some new artists on the main role but it just fits to the character that they address on the story. The urban west Java Village story become so REAL in this KKN movie and it brings the audience to feel that they are actually on that Villages and not in the movie theater. Five stars also to the producer MD production with their top norch marketing ways to promote this movie in many ways including the right timing of releasing this movie ( just on the Big ramadhan Holiday time ) Iam sure this movie will become the number 1 Box office in Indonesian movie making history. Well done 👏👏👏

good thriller indonesian movie

The first one hour so bored. I even wondered why this film can be the highest-selling movie. But the next one hour is climax. A good different thriller in indonesian movie history. I don't feel in vain for buying tickets.

Genre Confusion and Lackluster Horror

I'll give the director and the FX team some credit, It brought the movie alive in its already almost boring state of horror. To be honest? It isn't one of the greatest, it isn't one of the worst either.

The culture represented is almost near spot on, the acting of the cast did the best of what they could, the comedy for me as on point as it got a few laughs in theatre. I looked more after the parts where the cast had conversations more then the horror to open up the actual plot. The tension was lackluster, the horror wasn't terrifying or incredibly bad, just lackluster and missing a lot of elements that make something scary.

Best Horror Movie So Far

It is not like the other Indonesian horror movie. Everything is pretty much flawless. In my opinion KKN is superior than some western horror movie, like conjuring: the devil made me do it or Indonesia famous horror like Danur. The movie is divided into 2 versions; uncut and cut version. Uncut is for the age 17 and above. Cut version is for the age of 13 and above.

The acting is top notch. For the flaw acting, I can only find 1 person and he only have 1 line. The music is mesmerizing. This surely make me shocked. I did not expect much for the music, but all FX (Sound Effect) in the movie are very suitable and can build tension. The gamelan, traditional instrument of Indonesia, can make a loud and terrifying sound. The movie itself is not very scary, but scarier than "conjuring: the devil made me do it".

I am sure that this movie can reach the heart of international fans and compete with some horror series like conjuring, etc. I think that even though you are only 13, the uncut version itself is pretty mild and it does not matter even for the underage of 13 - 16. This movie is terrific and the best that I have ever watched.

The cinematography is superb

I love the cinematography of this film, the director success to make the atmosphere in this film. The score is awesome too. But, the plot is too boring, they forgot to explore the characters story, so there is a lot of plot holes.

Just rely on jumpscare

I like the kkn story from twitter which makes me curious. But when made into a film this is not so interesting the film relies too much on jumpscare which is very excessive, I don't even understand if this is about students or the ghosts in the village, but at least the Javanese language is presented very well.

More drama than horror, but watchable

A heavy, sombre mood is created throughout the movie, using blue and grey tones, complemented with sinister background music. I watched with Hindi audio, so perhaps I lost some of the nuances. But I felt that the story line was kinda flat and linear. Could have really done with a more complex plot. There were a lot of repetitive, inconsequential scenes. And a lot of wailing. Nothing much by way of horror. But a passable drama. The tropical asian locales were a welcome change from the scenes of popular western horror movies. Performances were okayish, but a bit over the top at times.

I wondered if the houses had attached toilets, because otherwise the characters needed to walk a mile to get to a bathroom for a shower!

The twitter thread is better

Exactly as the title said. The screenwriter does his best but the story just doesnt flow, too many cuts after important moment, jumping between scenes. Though I'd say the climax of the movie was actually good, the scene where she danced was hauntingly beautiful, the actress that portrays her does a good job.

Was this a good horror movie? No. Its a cautionary tale enwraped in a guise of horror film.

Considering all the hype, you'd be better off stick to the twitter thread.

No words can explain how good it was!

Honestly, I was really excited from the offset that KKN di desa penari, the story publicized by @simpleman, was getting their own movie. Putting up high expectations, there was more chance of disappointment but my gosh, it provided the best of the best. The cinematography was outstanding as well as bits of comedy scattered here and there being once again, utterly phenomenal. The best thing is how it really focuses on the story and focuses on the context of the movie to encompass its authenticity whilst maintaining curiosity through out the field. The pacing was a bit long but it has managed to keep me and my friend's attention watching all the time. I have watched this movie 3 times and i will not hesitate to watch again.

Please don't give fake rating just because you are from Indonesia !!

Seriously though, I cannot understand people who give this movie more than 5 stars. It does not deserve it considering the production time and money. This movie is totally ruining the story itself by unnecessary improvisation. For instance, I do not recall Widya being afraid when she was visiting the "ghost" village. She was supposedly enjoying herself and also she respected the person there when she was offered their food because the message was "respect the host when you are invited". That is just one of the example. Once again, I know that you love your country very much, but don't do it by cheating such as giving fake rating!!! This is important to make movie maker in Indonesia become better. I don't know why I'm writing this, I am not even sure they would understand this.

KKN di Desa Penari Is It Good Tho?

Personally my rating is : 5.5/10

Just watch some phenomenal movie in Indonesia, I didn't expect much about this movie cause a lot people say it's not good. But it's kinda true cause I don't get it why they got attack by Dawuh like why they got dream about Dawuh, but in the twitter threat they explain much better than in the movie. The visual it's look good tho and when Ayu dance it was super cool, and the sound mixing too that was super great cause they use Dolby Atmos. The Cinematography it just basic no something woah, like there's one scene they just capture the scene like just put the camera in some higher place, but the angle it's not good. I really love the transition from night to morning, the transition was in the tree front of their house like the left side was night and the right side is morning it was super cool, and the custome design was good too.

The plot of the story is not that good compared to the original thread on twitter

From the story is not well organized, but from the cinematography it's great but too much and too long. So from a less dense story, there are scenes that are too forced so it looks less natural. From the plot of the story too rushed. The language used is not natural, it should use the original language (Javanese) with a minimum of 70% because it can look natural and not forced. In terms of horror, it's very good, not forced to be scary, but needs to be improved.
