For fans of good old-fashioned dysfunctional families, a fresh drama is stirring up some troubled waters on Netflix now.

“The Waterfront,” the first Netflix original from “Vampire Diaries” and “Scream” producer Kevin Williamson, follows the efforts of the Buckley family to preserve their business legacy in a small beach town of North Carolina, which involves diving head-first into the drug smuggling business. As the family grapples with stepping into criminal activity, the tension also incentivizes complicated dynamics, from father and son to siblings and romantic entanglements.
The show relies on its cast to convey all the nuances at play between the Buckleys and the people around them. Thankfully, Williamson enlisted a collection of TV favorites to embody the show’s complicated subjects.
Here are the characters you need to know in “The Waterfront,” as well as the actors who play them and where you might have seen them before.

Kevin Williamson might be one of the more experienced TV and film producers. He has been involved in so many that it is hard to count them, with the Scream series, Vampire Diaries, and Dawson's Creek possibly standing out.
Now, Williamson (who also wrote the series), Netflix, and all involved in producing the new drama series The Waterfront are set to captivate audiences again. The 8-episode series, based on real events, will premiere on Netflix on June 19, 2025.
The story, which is set in the coastal part of North Carolina (where the filming took place), is a new take on a dysfunctional family, where the fictional Buckley family is in strife over its legacy. It's been a long time since the action-comedy movie that promised to reunite John Cena (Jackpot!) and Idris Elba (Hijack) was first announced. The good news for fans of both actors is that the wait is almost over. Today, Prime Video finally decided to unveil a trailer for Heads of State, which provides some insights into the story and reveals some of its characters. The streamer also announced a release date: it debuts on July 2, just in time for Independence Day.
The timing of the release is not random. In the story, Cena plays Will Derringer, the President of the United States, and Elba plays UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke. The two leaders have a very public feud, which is a huge problem for the nations' relationship. Oh, the bittersweet pain of saying goodbye to a beloved show! It’s been seven years since The Vampire Diaries took its final bow, and yet, here we are, still secretly hoping for a surprise comeback.
Admit it, at least once a year, you rewatch a few episodes, contemplate whether you’re Team Damon or Team Stefan, and ask yourself why Mystic Falls had such a terrible human survival rate. Well, folks, the wait for more supernatural drama might not be in vain. Julie Plec, the co-creator of the franchise, recently teased that there’s still some life left in The Vampire Diaries universe.

Much has been said about production moving away from California and even out of the country over the last few years. Many put it on rising costs and contraction related to streaming overtaking broadcast and cable, the Covid-19 pandemic, and the 2023 strikes, but one of the biggest problems is the lack of tax benefits productions in California are given, particularly in Los Angeles, the supposed entertainment hub of the world. As of now, the state caps its film tax credit program at $330 million annually. Compared to Georgia, which has no cap and spent more than $1 billion in 2024 subsidizing production, or New York, which offers $700 million in tax breaks annually, California’s financial incentives are paltry at best.

The latest casting news for Scream 7 may be the most surprising addition of them all. It's been revealed that another franchise star is returning for the new film, even though his character was killed off in the franchise 26 years ago.
Per Deadline, actor Scott Foley (The Girls on the Bus) has joined the cast of Scream 7. No details have yet been revealed about his character and how he will play into the plot, but it's certainly worth noting that Foley previously appeared in a major role in 2000's Scream 3. In that film, Foley played filmmaker Roman Bridger, a half-brother of Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott who was revealed in the end to be the Ghostface killer.

Exclusive: Scott Foley has joined the cast of Scream 7 from Spyglass and Paramount Pictures.
Details regarding his character and the film’s plot are currently under wraps. However, Foley is already part of the Scream universe having portrayed antagonist Roman Bridger, the film director and half-brother of Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) who was revealed to be the Ghostface Killer of Scream 3.
Foley’s casting comes with its own set of questions because Roman was killed by Dewey (David Arquette) at Sidney’s request. Roman has faked his own death before so it’s plausible that he could reprise the role in the present or perhaps in flashback form in the past if he is deceased. Could Roman have a long-lost twin? This is Scream after all, so if he returns as a ghost (face killer?) or a zombie, it would not shock most.

Now that 2024 has come to a close, it’s official, Netflix once again handed out the most cancellations in the calendar year – though at this point, I don’t think anyone will find this surprising. While the streaming platform has gotten better as the years have gone by in giving shows final seasons and the chances to establish themselves with audiences, the streaming platform continues to have some of the biggest cancellation rates in the business and 2024 was no different.
In total, Netflix canceled 16 shows in 2024 while also handing six additional shows their walking papers with final season orders which are about as close to cancellations as you can get the only difference being that those lucky six shows will get to actually wrap up their runs with proper sendoffs. So when you combine the two groups, Netflix decided to end a whopping 22 shows in 2024 be it by canceling them directly or ordering final seasons.

There's so many new shows that come our way every year. And while you do get comfortable with the series' that you become a fan of, it's never wrong to tune into something new. Many times, the trailers for a show will look intriguing, but then when the season is here it's a disappointment. HBO and Max had a few examples of that this year. Here's 4 HBO and Max shows from 2024 that let us down.
The Girls on the Bus
Despite its stellar cast, unfortunately that wasn't enough to keep our interest when it comes to The Girls on the Bus on Max. Frankly, the show was boring even though it did seem like an interesting premise with four female journalists on the presidential campaign trail. Of course each of them is also dealing with personal conflicts. Though overall, they weren't interesting enough to keep us invested in the story.

As we move closer to the end of 2024, now is the perfect time to look back at some of the worst shows of the year. It has been a fruitful year for TV watchers, particularly those who prefer to stream their series. We’ve seen an interesting mix of new shows and the anticipated return of old favorites. Still, this doesn’t mean they have all been winners.
Before we share which shows have been the most disappointing, let’s give recognition to some of the many series we’ve enjoyed the most. At the top of my list, I have Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent, Prime Video’s Fallout, and Hulu’s The Bear season 3. I know Netflix’s Baby Reindeer also received a lot of attention, as well as the returning Prime Video favorite, The Boys with season 4. Which shows have made it to your favorites list so far?...

Medically accurate storylines about abortion can help educate and inform viewers “across all political leanings,” according to a new study from USC Annenberg’s Norman Lear Center and Uc San Francisco’s Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health program.
In their paper “Abortion Depictions on Television: Impact on Audience Knowledge and Mobilization,” researchers surveyed 1,016 adult television viewers of three television episodes with depictions of the procedure that were deemed to be medically sound. The viewers of these storylines were tested for their knowledge of abortion and their interest in taking action after watching the 2022 A Million Little Things episode “Fresh Start,” the 2022 Better Things episode “No, I’m Not Gonna Tell Her” or the 2022 Station 19 episode “The Little Things You Do Together.”
Viewers who were casual, even occasional watchers of the series and did not recall the specific abortion episodes in question were surveyed alongside those who did remember the content of the specific storylines.

The Vampire Diaries co-creator Julie Plec reveals that she has more ideas about expanding the long-running franchise. The world of television and film is a fickle industry and, just because a TV show has a cast brimming with talent, a story that audiences want to hear, and the viewership numbers to prove it, that doesn't mean that a renewal is promised. In the case of a cancelation, not only is it devastating for the fans who want to see the next chapter play out, but its also a blow to the cast members who did so much work to become their characters and the crew who brought the production to life. This year, the unthinkable happened to Maxs female-led series, The Girls on the Bus, when it was unceremoniously cut from the streamers slate after just one season.

Dreaming of fame and fortune is an entirely normal and even typical rite of passage as a young person. As children and teens, many of us see celebrities and wish our lives could be like theirs full of glitz, glamor, limousines, and yachts. But when its put under a microscope, is the price of stardom really worth it? Sure, the public will be following your every move, which is stressful all on its own, but what about how you feel about your commitment to your craft and how audiences are taking that in? This under-talked-about pressure is one that Supergirl and The Girls on the Bus star Melissa Benoist says she felt deeply after landing her role as Marley Rose on Season 4 of Foxs uber-popular series, Glee.

Griffin Dunne’s family has done so many larger-than-life, unbelievable things that when the actor-director-producer started to write his memoir “The Friday Afternoon Club: A Memoir of Family,” he realized it wasn’t enough to start the story with his complex writer father Dominick Dunne.
In fact, it was impossible to understand the forces that shaped the Dunnes, including his uncle John Gregory Dunne and sister Dominique Dunne — without understanding his father’s abusive upbringing in an Irish Catholic family, his mother’s Mexican heritage and all great love stories, clandestine affairs, celebrity encounters and tragedies that seem to surround them, buffeted with lots of pitch-black mordant humor.
The heart of the new memoir is the 1982 murder of Griffin Dunne’s younger sister, “Poltergeist” star Dominique Dunne. It’s the first time he’s really grappled with telling the story of that pivotal event in his family’s history. The...

Even executives at Max seemed sad to end “The Girls on the Bus” after its first and only season on the streaming platform.
“While Max will not be moving forward with a second season of ‘The Girls on the Bus,’ we are grateful to have partnered with immensely talented Amy Chozick, Julie Plec, Rina Mimoun, as well as the teams at Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television,” a representative for Max said in a statement last month. “We are so proud of this powerful story of found family and the celebration of journalism, in all its forms. We thank them and our unrivaled cast for all their incredible work and collaboration.”
The show’s lead and producer, Melissa Benoist, also felt that sense of satisfaction over what was accomplished with the 10-episode drama series.
