Filmmaker Mario Van Peebles returns to the Wild West with his 2024 film,Outlaw Posse. His latest movieis not a sequel to his 1993 film, Posse, but has a similar goal of telling the stories of the Wild West that are often left out of history books and Hollywood movies. In the year 1908, the famous outlaw, Chief, returns to Montana and assembles a team of formidable fighters to go after a stash of gold hidden away in the mountains. The film focuses on the experiences of black cowboys and other marginalized people, incorporating real figures from history, like Stagecoach Mary, played by Whoopi Goldberg, to help tell overlooked stories.
Outlaw Posse is jam-packed with historical information, as if a passionate history teacher was given the opportunity to create a big-budget Hollywood movie. The film impressively mixes history lessons with references to classic Hollywood Westerns, showing a deep love for the Old West and film history.

Gunmen: Mario Van Peebles fondly recalls working with Christopher Lambert on underrated 90s actioner
The other day, one of our writers sat down with Mario Van Peebles to talk about his upcoming spiritual sequel to Posse, Outlaw Posse. In the pretty awesome conversation, we asked Mario about what we consider a pretty underrated movie of his, Gunmen. This 1994 action flick paired him with Christopher Lambert, with an all-star cast that included Denis Leary as the film’s villain, Patrick Stewart, and nineties dream girl Brenda Bakke, as well as 90s rappers like Big Daddy Kane, Eric B, Rakim, Doctor Dre and Ed Lover – who all played themselves. It’s a tough movie to find these days, but Peebles had fond memories of what they were trying to accomplish with it.
“Gunmen tips a hat to The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. My character, Christophe’s character, and the other character have a piece of the puzzle as to where the cachet of gold is.

Mario Van Peebles has been tapped to direct “That’ll Be the Day,” the story of how Buddy Holly and other musicians of the late 1950s helped give birth to rock ‘n’ roll and influence the wider societal and cultural landscape, including the civil rights movement.
Music has been central to much of Van Peebles’ work, from his 1991 gangster movie “New Jack City” to his work on “Wu-Tang: An American Saga,” which he co-executive produced for Hulu. Van Peebles is currently writing a musical stage tribute to his father Melvin Van Peebles, to be performed at New York City’s Lincoln Center later this year.
“America’s tumultuous cultural melting pot has produced transcendent musical talent, including Buddy Holly, who was our first bad ass rock ’n’ roll nerd,” Van Peebles said in a statement.

M. Emmet Walsh is dead at the age of 88, his manager Sandy Joseph told IndieWire. The grizzled character actor appeared in Hollywood movies across 55 years and was one of the most recognizable “oh yeah, that guy!” performers in the industry. Even just by saying “grizzled character actor” you probably pictured him, even if you didn’t know his name.
Walsh had bit parts in “Midnight Cowboy,” “Little Big Man,” “Serpico,” “What’s Up, Doc?” and “The Gambler” at the start of his career. But it’s two films from the early 1980s that put him on the map and truly lodged him in the consciousness of cinephiles: “Blade Runner” and “Blood Simple.” In Ridley Scott’s film he played Capt. Review: Mario Van Peebles is in the enviable position of being a writer, director and actor who can make the kinds of movies he wants with the people he wants. He would work with him again in Lambert’s franchise sequel, Highlander: The Final Dimension. Outlaw Posse is a western anchored by Van Peebles' charismatic lead performance. The film features a starry supporting cast that adds depth and complements the eccentric characters. Despite attempts at political commentary, the movie fumbles important messages due to multiple subplots.
Mario Van Peebles' revisionist western, Posse, ended with a caption lamenting Hollywood's erasure of 8,000 black cowboys and their stories. Thirty years later, Outlaw Posse attempts to shine a light on the Old West's diverse history, with mixed results. Outlaw Posse isn't a sequel to the 1993 western and the director is no longer directly reacting to Hollywood's whitewashed vision of America's past. Instead, Van Peebles reacts to the binary times of the present, presenting a western that celebrates diversity, and the role it must play in building the prosperous nation first promised by those early Wild West pioneers.

There is something occasionally charming about Outlaw Posse. Alas, charm can only get you so far when a film resembles more of a scattered work of cosplay than a robust cinematic work. A Western starring Mario Van Peebles, which he also writes and directs, it is built around all the familiar aspects of the genre. There are shootouts in bars, buried riches to be found, and the assembling of a team to do so. If you’ve seen any Western, you’ve seen Outlaw Posse. This isn’t always a bad thing, as some films can find something fun in well-worn tropes. This one, despite some pointed dialogue here and there, ultimately does not. Never quite rising to the level necessary to be classified as a thoughtful pastiche while not being silly enough to be more of a true parody, it is all incredibly sincere though ultimately superficial. Peebles and the cast are having fun,...

If Sergio Leone had ever signed on to make one of those ‘70s Blaxploitation oaters that once provided steady employment for Fred Williamson, it likely would have looked and sounded much like “Outlaw Posse,” a wildly uneven but cumulatively entertaining shoot-‘em-up that finds Mario Van Peebles doing triple duty as director, screenwriter and star. Quadruple duty, actually, if you count his credit as an executive producer.
“Outlaw Posse” has nothing to do with Van Peebles’ previous entry in this genre, 1993’s wild and woolly “Posse,” which suggests the multitasking filmmaker is tipping his Stetson to the multitude of ‘60s Spaghetti Westerns that, ahem, borrowed titles and eponymous characters from better known yet totally unrelated horse operas. But, then again, maybe not. Indeed, the film will probably be enjoyed most by folks not given to undue consideration of such trifling matters as lineage, logic and arrant anachronisms.

Mario Van Peebles made a big mark on cinema following in his father’s footsteps, Melvin Van Peebles, to be a unique, prominent voice for the African-American community in cinema. He would make many appearances as an actor, including working with fellow gunslinger Clint Eastwood on Heartbreak Ridge, as the sword-wielding Kane in Highlander: The Final Dimension, and taking on the monumental task of portraying Malcolm X in the Michael Mann film, Ali. However, in 1991, New Jack City, which co-stars Ice-t, would put Van Peebles on the map as a director, and he would parlay his run with movies like Panther and the 1993 western film, Posse, in which he also starred.

"Whatever you two geniuses scheming up, count me in!" Quiver Distr. has revealed an official trailer for a kooky, zany western thriller comedy titled Outlaw Posse, arriving in theaters in March. It's the latest film directed by and written by and starring actor / filmmaker Mario Van Peebles, son of the legendary Melvin Van Peebles. This kind of feels like Van Peebles trying to create a modern update on Blazing Saddles, but it doesn't have the same comedic genius as that film. In the untamed Wild West of 1908, men in power take advantage of an unfair world. Renegade cowboy Chief, eager to restore balance, assembles a daring group of outcasts and saddles up on a cross-country odyssey to reclaim stolen gold in unsettled territory. The big ensemble features William Mapother, John Carroll Lynch, D.C Young Fly, Mandela Van Peebles, Amber Reign Smith, Neal McDonough, Allen Payne, Cam Gigandet, and M. Emmet Walsh,...

Kathleen's final words to Billy on her deathbed reveal her belief in the underlying goodness of his soul, despite his future crimes and reputation as an outlaw. Billy's decision to join John Tunstall and abandon his previous alliances with Lawrence Murphy and Jesse Evans was influenced by his mother's message, as he believed in the good that Tunstall stood for. While Billy the Kid is not inherently evil, his circumstances and fight for survival led him to a life of crime. However, his mother's belief in his goodness still resonates, as seen in his offer of friendship to Tom O'Folliard in the season 2 premiere.

In 1993, Mario Van Peebles dabbled in the Western genre with Posse. Peebles took after his father, Melvin Van Peebles, who was a notable filmmaker in the blaxploitation genre in the 1970s. Mario appeared as an actor in films like Rappin’, Heartbreak Ridge starring Clint Eastwood, and the infamous Jaws: The Revenge, which featured an apathetic Michael Caine. He would also head up his own projects as a writer and director, much like his father. One of the more popular films Peebles would be known for is the 90s street crime classic, New Jack City.
Peebles is returning to the director’s chair for a new feature he wrote called Outlaw Posse. The film is a Western that bears no connection to the similarly titled Posse. Highland Film Group has picked up the distribution and has shared a first look at the film with a new picture exclusively shared by Variety.

Others joining Van Peebles in major roles include Whoopi Goldberg (Till), Cedric the Entertainer (The Neighborhood), Edward James Olmos (Mayans M.C.), John Carroll Lynch (Big Sky), William Mapother (Son of Monarchs) and M. Emmet Walsh (The Immaculate Room).
Outlaws follows Chief (Van Peebles), a renegade cowboy putting together a multicultural team of new and old friends in order to ride into dangerous unsettled territory to retrieve gold from an abandoned mine. Hot on Chief’s tail is Angel (Mapother), a spurned lawman and Civil War veteran with a thirst for vengeance. So begins a cross-country journey, with Chief and his band of Outlaws crossing paths with a number of interesting historical characters along the way, including a true-to-life Stagecoach Mary played by Goldberg.
