Camp for unruly Christian kids

Here's a time waster of a film. If you think that you will see another Exorcist movie, forget it. If you think this is a celebration iof religion, forget it.

Father Bruce Davison runs a camp where good Catholics send their kids every summer. This place is mainly to teach about giving into temptation especially those sins of the flesh. But other things too. Imagine confiscating jelly beans. Where's God's commandment aganst them?

The only sin is sitting through this tripe and see a lot of good players waste time and talent.

Will mean more to those who are fundamental christians

Perhaps this movie is better described as a psychological thriller, rather than horror.

It details events based on the director's own experience as a teenager. A teen is sent to a church camp that is an odd mix between catholicism and fundamental Christianity (baptist/charismatic). Apparently it's a real sect of Christianity called the People of Hope that I hadn't heard of before.

Having grown up in fundamental Christianity, I recognised a lot of the teachings in this film, and I don't think the director over-exaggerated any of it. There are supernatural events in the film, though those events seem to be the hallucinations of the christians themselves, brought on by their indoctrination.

The film's core point is the guilt and fear that fundamental Christianity puts in people, particularly those who grew up in the church. Everything you do is a sin or allows "the devil" into your life. Whether it be a worldly comic book, or sex before marriage, both are treated equally as bad and there is no excuse. Ironically, there is no grace or real love - it's all about condemnation, suppression, and always trying to be 'holy' (which can never happen since humans are imperfect).

This constant indoctrination by the church leaves many christians full of guilt, fear, and in extreme cases, psychotic.

The film could've been a bit shorter and it does have a bit of an indie feel. I think the audience it will speak to the most is those who have any experience with fundamental Christianity. In that respect, I recommend they watch this film.

Bad not made for TV movie

The acting was okay. The story was interesting until it went absolutely nowhere. It was a road that should have stayed less traveled. The movie is suppose to be based on true events. But what the hell where those events. The story telling is so fragmented and ambiguous, and perhaps would have been better told in say 22 minutes ala Twilight Zone, but the plot is so stretched that the filler dilutes whatever message the movie makers wanted to make. I waited until the last minute to see if this movie would "save" itself, yet alas no. I only sacrificed 90 minutes of time to trite. Oh, and the music, the score, or whatever it was, was just awful. In fact, the music used during the opening credits should have tipped me off to the crap that lied ahead.

Camp hell, more like movie hell

Thoroughly unimpressed.

I gave this movie two stars because at least the special effects were somewhat decent. Either than that, this movie was pure hell to sit through and watch.

I was under the impression that this was a horror film, setting the story with a Christian camp. Usually in horror movies, it sets the scene for normal life at the camp, and then some guy comes and starts stabbing them all. That was the only thing that kept me watching the movie, because I was waiting for that to happen. SERIOUS LIFE MISTAKE!

Don't wait on this movie like I did, you will be horrified, but only in the sense that you just wasted your life away watching this.

Born again Christian advert.

Why this has been listed on most sites as a horror film I will never know.It is, without any doubt a 90 min ad for the benefits of Christianity.

A young boy in a strict Christian family goes to summer camp where he is told that Looking at girls will make him burn in hell, as will reading comics, eating jelly beans ??????,wanking, listening to rock music and, well everything thats fun really. Here he fins he may be being followed by a demon.

What is scary about this film is that it makes no apology for its views, which in most people opinion are far right wing Christian ideals.

AVOID, AVOID, AVOID. OR BURN IN HELL. lol

Movie was not Horror

This movie was not a horror movie. Jess Eisenberg was on the cover of this movie but had probably about a minute or two in the movie. If I see a picture of a famous actor on movie cover, I expect to see a whole lot more of him. The movie is not worth renting or buying. Don't waste your time renting it! Oh and to the gentlemen who said Lawsuit. This type of storyline has been done to death. Some kids going to some camp of some type and being chased, haunted or whatever by some madman, demon etcetera. Your Teaser trailers only show some guy running around in some fangs and blue make-up. Also, Even if you try to take them to court, You have no clue how long that script has been written and approved and copyrighted for a film format. Besides, They can use any storyline that they want as long as it doesn't follow the exact same format of a particular piece.

really? thats it? wow

this is a movie where nothing happens seriously, you wait for something to happen but nope. its mostly a waste of time, do not rent this trust me it is very bad! there is one thing that happens, the movie ends. the only thing i liked about this movie was that how bad the camp was and how bad the priest was if you don't believe me give it a rent then you will!basically there is this kid that doesn't like Jesus or god so they send him to this camp where they try and help him believe then the kid starts having nightmares and and the priest there trying to help him is to religious and says these terrible things to him and doesn't want them to have any contact with the girls there. thats basically it.

Absolutely brilliant, thoughtful, scary masterpiece of horror

If you liked movies like Black Swan, Session 9, The Mechinist, or Jacob's Ladder, then you will love this movie. It's a very thoughtful story of how badly a young mind can be hurt through religious brainwashing. A lot of people here say this movie doesn't make any sense and stuff like that. I think they just can't read the symbols beneath the surface. A lot of the things we see in this movie are the visions of a disturbed mind, they can't be taken literally. A lot of people think a movie has no story when this story is not told in the classical form they teach you in school when you're a kid, but if you're just a little bit smarter you will appreciate this movie as a masterpiece of narrative and psychological terror. And if you ever had a psychotic breakdown you will recognize yourself in the main character, because he is brilliantly constructed. And anyone who is studying professional psychology will find in this movie a very good example of how a child who's being forced to think in a certain way by using terror and fright to convince him, can reach to a level of fear that will cause him a psychotic breakdown and completely melt down. This movie may have a lot of elements that may seem to be supernatural, but that's only in a superficial level, behind those visions you will see this movie as one of the most realistic movies you'll ever see. This happens all the time to young people.

Trite Treatment

An embarrassing caricature of the catholic faith. Catholic Christians don't speak in such overly religious tones. Christian kids of this age are pretty much the same as others in their knowledge of the world, except they have faith in God and attend church. Well directed, well acted. Badly written. Not a horror movie per se. It seems an attemp was made to place "Christian camps" in a bad light. The only "normal" character was Jack, played by Connor Paolo. His relaxed and realistic attitude made everyone else look like cartoons. He was refreshing. He did a great job with what he was given. Cheers.

indeed hell

Over here it's called camp hell, a perfect title, it was indeed hell to watch, or in the US it was released as camp hope, yes, i hoped it was over. What was this that I just watched, luckily I paid almost nothing for this piece of crap. I thought that you couldn't get worser than the Twilight franchise but it could be done. This is all about not having intercourse or don't masturbate. And don't get me wrong, you won't see any of this. This is for me just a promo for fundamental Christians. Nothing else happens. No horror, no scary parts, no nudity, no nothing except 3 dead pigeons beheaded, man was I afraid. If you are a Christian in real life than you will surely masturbate on this one but for the pagans, as they call it, don't visit camp hell.

watch this if you're interested in a genre that could be called 'christian horror'

i rented this from redbox, and was pretty disappointed in it. i'm a fan of all types of horror movies, but in my opinion, mr. vanbuskirk could have done a lot more to give it some kind of menacing atmosphere...it's like i spent most of the movie waiting for the movie to start, honestly. there were several side stories, none of which were brought to conclusion, or developed enough to be anything more then an addition to a confusing movie. camp hell had some potential, but seems like the director was so intent on trying to fit everything he wanted to do in one movie that he ended up with too much stuff, too little time. i would skip this. at first i thought it was a new genre, Christian horror...after reading an interview with him apparently this was not the case, but it still didn't turn out very well.

Camp Dissappointment

I made an account just to review this. It felt like the movie was 3 hours long...but somehow is only 1.5 hours. Jesse Eisenberg was in this for all of 5 minutes. Stop putting him on the cover and put the poor main character on it instead. Even the main characters parents made it on the cover.

Whatever point this movie is making, maybe religion = bad, is lost. It's very slow moving at points, which is makes for a boring experience. The special effects were alright. The acting was a little forced with some, but overall pretty good. I imagine the writing and direction given made some of the characters forced.

This sucked.

So, I saw this for free and it just sucked.

Too much religion preaching and just too boring.

The story just drags and drags and drags.

How many times does somebody have to be lectured about sex and how wrong it is? This movie is such BS on so many levels.

Even though this was free, it still was a waste of time.

Where was the horror? Where was the scary? Nope - not here.

Go to bed instead - maybe you'll have a nightmare.

Boo.

Am I at ten lines yet?

Overall a childish time pass movie, which you can rent, if you have young siblings or kids in the house and they want to watch a horror movie. :p

CAMP HOPE/HELL – TRASH IT ( D ) Camp Hope/Hell, well I thought it's going to be Scary after watching its promos but it was not at all, totally made for children and even I guess made by a kid too, seems like. Though it doesn't means it's not enjoyable, it is good time pass watching same thing about God and Satin. Will Denton and Valentina de Angelis chemistry is lovable. Conner paolo did a good job. Dana Delany was just there and perfect as always. Jesse Eisenberg did friendly cameo. Overall a childish time pass movie, which you can rent, if you have young siblings or kids in the house and they want to watch a horror movie. :p

I cannot believe I watched this

"Based on true events" came up at the end of the movie. If that was at the beginning I wouldn't have continued.

It's a terrible movie about, one of many, true horrors of this world; religion.

Evil, Power-Mad "Monks" Are The Real Horror

A psychological study of the horrors of fundamentalist indoctrination. It's a competent, well mounted, and professional looking film for a low-budget effort.

The movie delivers some creepy moments and a scene or two that scares (in the Horror movie method). But it is not a slasher, gore, or monster movie.

One gets the impression that the anti-religious elements are soft-peddled somewhat. Could the Writer/Director still be suffering from a real-life repression of his feelings ("based on true events" says the credits).

The villainous brain-washers are portrayed as good-natured, sincere, folks doing God's work and don't have any real threat or diabolical intent. Isn't that the "horror" of it all? The harm and damage done by this type of closed-minded inculcation of young people.

One gets the feeling that the reality is that these people, deep in their souls, know exactly what they are doing and are nothing more than evil, power-mad "monks" and it is disturbing that so many people fall for it. That is truly scary.

Camp No-Fun.

The doings at the camp of an extreeemely religious community from the perspective of a young man who is troubled by bad dreams and the added complication of his feelings for a girl which is prohibited by the strictures of his religious teachings.

Curious things begin to happen; apparently some kind of demonic attack and persecution and the young man seems somehow at the center of it --or perhaps the group as a whole because of their unreasonable excess. Whatever is happening, be it group hallucination, brainwashing, or reality, it seems that they have somehow brought it on themselves; invited it through their stern conditioning and behavior.

Finally, it's an interesting psychological movie and worth a look. Good story with fresh young actors and adequate to good acting. The lesson may be that at some extreme point of devotion, though well intentioned, reason can be abandoned and the devotion unwittingly transferred to something else. Perhaps the opposite of your intent. When reason is gone, nothing good remains. Love, Boloxxxi.

What's the purpose for this movie?

I think that you can see this movie from 2 points of view: religion and the wish to see a thriller movie.

About the thriller movie: it's more like a spiritual horror, as many said. It manages to induce some freak, but not too much.

About the religios side, because it is inspired from real facts, I think that the character didn't manage to get the real sense of religion, not even after many years. Why? because he ended the movie by wondering what could be God useful at if he didn't help him to get over his nightmares. one important thing wasn't said in this movie: if you want God to help you, then you have to ask him and pray. And in a real way, not forced by your parents or the priest. Of course your parents and the priest may guide you. We can make choices, but we can choose the good or we can choose the bad. If we choose bad then it's not God's fault that he doesn't do anything. Like Einstein said: dark is the absence of light. I think this is what we should have understood from this movie, but I didn't see that and it's a deception to see that a man who passed through that didn't finally understand the important things. And he even made a movie. deception. it my opinion.
