Kannum Kannum

This film was released to critical reviews yet performed poor in box office,this movie would have been welcomed during this ott era ,the story is simple yet makes you glued to the screen ...the director of this movie,marimuthu is man of simplicity and it occurs to be in his movies also which is very near to hear making. The characters in this movie is characterized by director with nativity in mind of the surrounding. Even director himself believed that this Film should have performed well to help him make such movies . Yet he had another outing called pulival ,that too falls under box office..sad that the director of this movie is no more ...yet he will be remembered for his "Emma aii"

One thing I totally appreciated in this movie was its honest portrayal of a very local theme. It revolves around a man's ethical dilemma - his role as a caretaker of an adopted family versus his role as a daring lover. It's very refreshing to see directors take up ethical concepts and treat them in a slightly formal, lyrical way, with plenty of opportunity for personal judgment and criticism.

The movie begins with a very short and almost careless introduction to the love story. Prasanna goes to Kutralam in search of the girl of his dreams, with no idea that she is indeed the sister of one of his best friends. While waiting for her to return from her school-trip, there is an interesting turn of events that puts a lot of emotional pressure on his original intentions.

The comedy track (Vadivelu), however, left a lot to be desired. It was completely disjointed from the movie, and was very ordinary. Music was quite ordinary too, and I think the movie could have done better without the songs or the comedy. But sometimes I forget the movie was made in India.

It was a pleasure to see Kutralam and the lush green settings of rural India for a change. Thumbs up for honest movie making, and thanks to the passer-by at the local video store here in California for suggesting "Kannum Kannum".

Prasanna is an orphan who is interested in writing poems through a sobriquet . His poems are published in local magazines . He ,very soon realises that some one else shares his thoughts and sensibilities . She is his fan and reads his poems regularly and sends fan mail . They start interacting through letters .

Knowing her details , he goes to Kutralam to search for her . He goes to live with his friend there . The family is headed by Vijay kumar . The friend has 4 sisters. The heroine Udaya is one of the sisters and has gone on all India trip with her friends .

Very soon Prasanna becomes close to this family as he misses having one himself .

They all make him feel at home involving him in day to day activities as a family member . Sadly before Udaya returns back home , her brother dies in a freak accident . He feels guilty as he was driving the scooter . None of the family members hold him responsible and in fact grow closer to him . When Udaya comes back he holds him responsible for her brother's untimely death . She maintains her distance from him . The family affectionately forces him . He stays back in that house to fulfill his friend's responsibilities as their son and brother .

He also manages to get two sisters married to their cousins as per their wish .

One day when Udaya sings her songs in a school program , both realize that they were the ones exchanging letters as both are fans of each others' writings .

From here starts some uneasy relations , confusions and misunderstandings. The family considers him as their brother . He is called to fulfill the maternal uncle's rituals when one sister gives birth to a son .

When Vijay kumar dies , the family forces him to do his funeral rights as his son .

Both of them do not tell their feelings to the family . She keeps stalling marriage much to the her family's puzzlement .

Finally she decides to tell her story to her family much against his wishes . But Prasanna refuses to marry her saying I have more love from your family as a son and a brother . I have become your family member easily .

He leaves her and returns back home .She quietly accepts her fate . She is left with his memories.

Shot in lush locales of Sengottai and Tankasi , its a very quite simple movie with a few characters . No loud songs are included. The side comedy track of Vadivelu is unnecessary and brash . Prasanna reminds us of family heroes like Mohan or Karthik . The heroine Udaya looks very simple and homely . The local dialect is used in a lot of places and is a delight to our ears . Over all a fine family movie .
