Cryptozoology might be considered a crackpot science, but no show makes it so entertaining like Destination Truth.

Headed by photographer Josh Gates and his young and hip production crew, they get the travel the world in search of the unknown creepy crawlies and creatures nearly every country seems to have in its culture.

The show has been around for about a season and half and we still don't know if lake monsters or Bigfoot actually exist.

So if you want exact science stay away from this show but watch it if you just want a have a good ol entertaining time.

Destination Truth follows the exploits of self-styled adventurer and cryptozoologist Josh Gates. Every episode Gates and his drinking buddies search for two new cryptids (or, when convenient, any other odd stuff in the vicinity).

If you overlook the fact that Gates lacks any real credentials (although he regularly consults with experts), the show is a great watch. It's a light-hearted alternative to series like Ghost Hunters and MonsterQuest.

Although Destination Truth's methods are suspect (as they only spend a few days in most locations), they're by no means worse than other sensationalist documentaries and the casting more than makes up for any shortcomings: Gates is both abrasive and witty as he playfully (and rightfully) ridicules first-hand eye-witness testimony; his outright skepticism is a breath of air; and his sarcasm, well, a bit over the time (he's about as subtle as a hammer... or Michael Moore).

All in all, Destination Truth is a surprisingly good watch for a Scifi channel documentary.

All right, so they really don't find anything, but maybe that isn't the point. Something that is missing from investigation shows is a little bit of humor and Destination Truth has plenty of that. I find this show absolutely hysterical and would watch episodes for that reason alone. However, DT does introduce many lesser known myths about animals around the world. Maybe, just maybe, this is the true purpose of the show, to reveal stories and legends of other cultures. Maybe in Season 2 they'll find some exciting evidence, maybe they'll continue to come up empty, but I will learn something about a foreign culture and laugh a little in the process. My suggestion is take the show for what it is and enjoy it for what it offers, an entertaining hour of television.

I absolutely love this show and am baffled about all the people bashing it. Josh Gates is one hell of a host and keeps things interesting and fun. I have no idea why some people get the impression that he is making fun of the locals in the exotic destinations he investigates. Josh is a goofy guy and finds humor in every situation and I don't think that's such a bad quality and who ever thinks so must lead a boring life. People also seem to complain about them not finding any evidence which I find hilarious. Do you really expect them to find evidence of a werewolf? Obviously there is no such thing as werewolves and if they found "evidence" to support that, I'd stop watching. Destination Truth is about introducing us couch potatoes to other cultures and their superstitions and beliefs and going out there to A. If it is a plausible creature, look for possible evidence of it's existence. and/or B. Look for what people could be mistaking as a unknown creature. Most of the time they find evidence to support the latter. I have also read comments criticizing the on camera "freak outs," I'm sorry but if you are in the middle of the jungle at night; you better be afraid of EVERYTHING. No one on this show claims to be a scientist and actual scientific research can take years if not ones lifetime. So, if you like travel mixed with humor and learning about other cultures' superstitions and "monster" sightings with a healthy does of skepticism then this show is for you. If you take life way too seriously, hate fun, and like to spend time ripping a TELEVISION SHOW apart... look elsewhere.

I loved this show from the get go. It just gets better each season. I wait impatiently for the next season every year. Josh is by far the best reason to watch. He's funny, adventurous and down right entertaining. His current crew is relatively new, so there's some "getting to know them time" that's necessary but typically, the crew seems to work well together. The show's not about absolutely finding what they're looking for (although they have found some interesting evidence that gained world-wide attention of the scientific community), but it's about the journey, visiting new places via the TV and interacting with new and different cultures. It's about the adventurous spirit for those who don't have it or the finances to travel the world looking for themselves. By far this is the best SyFy show and the best cable reality show! Those that don't like it probably have a poor sense of humor, adventure and lack the inquisitive nature of the human spirit.

It looks like a couple of folks don't get it. It's a drama and a comedy.

We laugh our butts off every time we watch it. Actually about half the time. The first half of each "investigation" is funny. This includes getting there, which is always a disaster. The investigation kind of slows the laughs down some as it is awful "Blair witchcraft". It's OK though as they have two investigations per show.

I wish they would just change it to more of a travel show so we would have the laughs the entire show. It would be great if they could have some guests on the show like Geraldo Rivera as he has to be the model for Josh Gates character.

Call me crazy, but wouldn't it make sense, when chasing spirits in Peru for instance, to communicate with a suspected entity in Spanish or Quechua instead of English? Inquiring minds...

Every week when I'm flipping through the channels I see the same old cryptozoologic show, where the hosts and hostesses don't seem to care about what they are researching, and hardly even try for evidence. This is not the case with Destination Truth. Destination Truth is a great show, following cryptozoologists across the world as they look for evidence of many undetermined species, in other words, cryptids. Every week I bear witness to some bone chilling evidence, (although mostly there isn't quite enough to prove the existence of the cryptid) and the hardy, trying work of the hosts and hostesses. Destination Truth is a terrific show, and I would recommend it to any fans of the genre. I feel like I really do know Josh Gates, and that I'm tagging along with him during his globe trekking adventures to search for cryptids worldwide.

First of all, Josh Gates is a very entertaining guy, something which has been missing from prior 'investigation' shows which scifi has aired. Amanda Tapping in Proof Positive, while a good host, was just far too serious and made the show very dry. Boston Rob in that show from last year, which I can't even recall, was obviously bored with it and falsely skeptical. It was all a show and not an overly entertaining one. Josh Gates ... he's awesome. He takes something that really does not warrant the level of serious treatment which makes people interested in cryptozoology and such things appear as weirdos and brings it down to earth. A show of this type is good for interesting people in the field of Cryptozoology. As a 30 year old who IS interested in such things, it's nice to find an entertaining, fun to watch, semi-investigative series. And it's also fun to be afraid that some of their less than smart ideas might end up with either the host or the producer seriously injured.

Josh Gates is silly and lots of fun with his equally goofy crew as they go around the world searching for monsters and ghosts.

Josh, a big man with a voice like Fozzie Bear of the Muppets, is a real ham. I think the show is fun as long as I don't attempt to take it seriously and therein lies one of the problems. The title implies that there's a "TRUTH" slant to this show. Of course there's no serious or even scientific stuff going on. Yep, they have cameras which they usually have on themselves. They have gizmo's that beep and buzz.....so do I.

The funniest part of this show is when the guys get scared and scream worse than the women. Can you imagine being in an abandoned outdoor place of worship in Taiwan and NOT seeing something moving?? Geez guys, they do have monkeys and other animals roaming around. It ain't ghosts! Oh well, that show was hilarious as was the one when the guys were in the water and saw something "Big" moving.

I Put aside any thought of it being serious and I think it's a fun show with exotic destinations. Otherwise, I'll just get aggravated.

What a polar opposite to Expedition Unknown, which I truly like. EU is based in facts, archaeology, history, evidence. Destination "Truth" is based in....nothing but entertainment factor for ghosty ghoulie fans. Can't hardly stand watching this idiocy, except that once in a while they actually throw in some true culture and history that keeps my attention and makes me think that if I endure the crap, I might learn something worth my time. Big foot, large crocodiles, bats, animal noises, lights, urban and backwoods legends, over stating weather and normal natural obstacles.....all WAY over dramatisized deliberately, for nothing more than suspense to keep really bored people really duped. It's like one show is scientifically based and then....well hell, just in case we don't do well with intelligent, historical science (EU) let's do stupid, drunk hillbilly, sensationalistic bullcrap just in case. That way we get good ratings for EU from one demographic and some good, drug induced thumbs up from....another demographic. Seriously....if you're fascinated by paranormal (and plenty of intelligent, scientific ppl are) there are many other venues which are actually better suited to whet your appetite....that don't presume you're a total idiot. Flipside....Gates is ingeniously two faced in these shows. He is knowledgeable, level headed, factually in-tuned and a good teacher in Expedition Unknown. It is much less theater and more genuine conveying of real info. Yet he is a silly peddler of tricks and drama in Destination "Truth" and betrays that he really sucks at acting. Expedition Unknown raises my eyebrow. Destination Crap makes my eyes roll.

A romping travelogue full of fun facts, comedic turns and the occasional monster! And who doesn't love monsters?!

The fist two or three episodes are a little rough, with the intrepid host coming off a little more mean- spirited than he ever does again but after these initial tender attempts the show takes off just fine, finding its unique voice.

If anything, Destination Truth is a kind of hip Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom.

So do they ever find anything? Well, that would be telling. Lets just say that some things remain undiscovered simply because nobody seriously looked for them.

And you should look for this show. You'll enjoy it. And mysteriously, for all its cleverness and adventure, it is somehow very comforting.

It's entertaining on some levels but what it sparks in me the most is that I learn about local myths around the world and I begin to read up on them. If you watch the show, use it as a starting point to read and learn about local legends and myths that you never knew was out there (if you're into this stuff and care to look it up for yourself). It's amazing how myths spring up all over the world and have similarities no matter the people, culture, location, or even the number of skeptics; it's all connected in some way and I find that very interesting seeing how so many people notice differences in all races and cultures but ignore the similarities in our origins. I never expect these guys to find anything but I like the show. peace

Over-hyper rubbish made for the ignorant and superstitious.

The presenter is a supercilious, self-important publicist who cares not a whit for the truth or even a destination unless he can get some gullible production company to subsidise his trip there. The editing is woeful and 30 years out of date and the use of cuts to bring an impression of drama is pathetic.

These clowns have not, and will not, ever find anything interesting because if they ever did we'd have heard about it from proper researchers, not bloviating cretins like this crowd. The blatant product placement is yet another reason to find this insult to the viewing public reprehensible television at its worst.

This is one of the worst things my TV has ever spewed at me.

Our family loves this show! It's the only travel / mystery show that makes you want to get up off the couch and go Explore. Josh Gayes is the Funniest Guy on the television! I Hope Travel channel keeps broadcasting this series. I give this show an 11 and wish they come to our state so we could find bigfoot!

Very good show. Josh and the team are entertaining. My biggest complaint is that the episodes are broken into two investigations. I think it should have focused on just one topic per episode. They are too quick there in and out. But still it is very fun. They make things interesting and fun. It has lots of "dad jokes" and silly but still teaches you things and informs. Cast mates like Ryder, Jael, Ali and so on are good as second leaders. Josh is the entertainment and heart of the show. The series gets better. I do not like the intro voices and Josh seems rushed on some of the episodes to get out what the page says quickly. Feels a little forced. He gets better on Expedition Unknown but I miss the team feel of this series.

My biggest problem with this is the high and mighty attitude that the host has. "I here for the truth!" he announces with each episode. The problem is the truth better come out in the one night they spend researching a case. I can see coming into an area and doing the research with a healthy dose of skepticism, but they basically clown around, making more fun of the locals than anything, then spending only 8 hours or so doing any actual research. They NEVER find anything, but they certainly do a lot of running around chasing the illusive whatever they are hunting that week. Then as soon as day breaks, no matter how close they were to getting some real answers, they pack up and head out. It takes them longer to get there than to investigate. Plus my biggest issue with this show and with Ghosthunters is all of the stuff that they both claim to see and hear, but by the time the cameraman points in the right direction its gone. The cameras worn by the team are a great idea, but I didn't tune in to see your damn faces! TURN THE DAMN CAMERAS AROUND! Let us see what you see, when you see it! I know what you look like, and I prefer not to see you up close!

I've watched a number of these and the hour long searches always contain a lot of trekking through jungles and oceans in both day and night conditions and aside from a lot of hyperbole, nothing is ever found...if you're looking for revelations of new creatures you will be very disappointed!

I honestly gave this show enough time and viewed enough of this nonsense and discovered they should be doing something else. Someone had said that this is a comedy/drama. Well not according to the description of this show by this site. They have made it a sad comedy, unable to track anything effectively. "High Tech Equipment", right. They didn't even have a compass or a GPS. Why jump into a monastery to discover spirits just to run out of the building...? I do believe these folks are a bit on the sensationalistic side evoking oohs and ahhs from a younger crowd.

Oh well, good luck to the rest of you defending this series.

I find Destination Truth to be profoundly disappointing. My first complaint is that they must be addressing an audience of ignorami, as the lion's share of the "little-known mysteries" that they examine are quite well known among fans of cryptozoology or paranormal (e.g., haunting) phenomena. I find the main guy, Josh, to be overwhelmingly arrogant and pseudo-knowledgeable: I'm not sure whether it's his mispronunciation of words that's more annoying to me than his corrupted citations of almost-facts. The specialty of the show is what I term the "red herring cliffhanger": we are introduced to a "Holy cow!" situation that introduces--guess what--a COMMERCIAL and is immediately followed by a letdown. The attempts at detecting evidence of, say, ghostly phenomena are about as childish as, "Whoa, did you see that?" "O.K., guys, I'm getting creeped out," "Oh, it just got colder in here," and that old standard, "Did someone or something just touch me?" The simulated, nonsensical terror--ALWAYS dispelled and resulting in a zero-lessons-learned mission--reminds one (and this is FAR from a compliment) of "The Blair Witch Project" with a touch of bachelor's-degree-level biology or ecology.
