So I decided to watch this as a stupid human being at 3am in the morning because it was considered as one of the messed up animes out there and boy, they are not wrong thanks to my curiosity. There is a lot of severe rape, child slavery, disability shaming, revenge killing, animal killing, you name it!
I strongly advise you to avoid this if you are sensitive on the topics I just mentioned there, especially if you are an animal lover. I'm not gonna say what was killed because it was very upsetting since they were only babies. I honestly had to block the scene with my hand until they were done and like the cries man, omg I should've turned the volume down urghhhhhh.....
Im giving it a 7/10 since the art was very well done, the Japanese voice actors were very good but it got rid of a star because the ending was rather abrupt and not clear on what happened next to the little girl. I honestly would love to see a happy ending like anyone would but I just didnt know what the hell was going on at the end. ._.
Luckily I got a good sleep afterwards but it is god wrenching to say the least.....

I loved the art style used though the content was a bit depressing. But I've got to admit that this work is a masterpiece in its own ways given that the director/animator, Hiroshi Harada had to work on it for five years and alone.
I am happy I learned something from it, that we can find solace even in a place similar to hell.

One of the things that most people comment on when reading on Midori is that it was actually banned originally for depicting graphic violence to animals. Now, what is on display here is rather shocking but certainly not enough to be considered obscene, especially considering the psychopathic nature of the character which performs the act. If anything, the act featured is only detrimental to children and as anyone with a brain has figured out, this isn't for children at all.
Personally, I was quite surprised by Midori. It was mostly animated and directed by the one man and it shows: mouths don't move often, backgrounds suddenly disappear, zooming in of a single picture is common etc. If anything, these shortcuts only add to the charm of the movie and how intricately personal it is to it's creator. There was apparently 5000 paintings handpainted by Hiroshi Harada to complete the film over a course of 5 years. It was also funded by Hiroshi's life savings; if that's not dedication to a piece of art then I don't know what is.
So the animation is charming, the characters are gut wrenching and the script is full of profound reflections. Another point is the music; most of the soundtrack is created by a keyboard and the dark melancholy keyboard noodlings really add to the circus freakshow setting in the movie.
This is a very dark and unsettling anime movie, so it's only best to watch this if you're looking for something that's profound and will make you think. It will hurt you emotionally and upset you but it will stick in your mind for days on end.

There isn't much to be said about Midori that hasn't already been said about it. We know what happens in this film. Sure, there isn't a sea of blood, and the Kill count is low so the surface level gore hounds will scoff, but that's not why this film is disturbing. Midori's reputation comes from its completely un-restrained misanthropy. This film will make you loathe your humanity. It takes real life horror and does what anime on celluloid does best, elevates it and shoves it right in your face. You can hate it and turn your face away from it but these things ARE real. They exist in humanity. I'm glad this never was funded and that it was made the way it was. It's brutal and the low budget makes it feel personal Like Harada would stab you with his paint brush if he could. For 90s anime and it being of the horror genre It's about as challenging of a thing an artist can make and it is Art for better or worse. Take it or leave it.

I want to start off by saying I respect the hustle of the director being that he single handedly composed, drew, and animated this film over a course of five long years. It also apparently took over 5,000 individual sheets of paper to complete and that's no easy feat. However, this film was extremely difficult to follow. Was there a story? Yes. Could I tell you what happens in the end? Nope. It's a roller coaster of confusion and gore without real meaning. I honestly don't know how there are people giving this film such high ratings, they must be able to appreciate something in it that I cannot.

Everyone judges this movie by being gore, horrifying and scary, but they don't realize that that's exactly the point of it. The movie isn't bad, it's incredibly well done (considering also the fact that Hiroshi Harada spend five years to make it), and if you're going to rate this movie, rate it for what it is, not what you think it's supposed to be.
I know this is an old anime and a classic. I watched it because I keep hearing bed things about it and I wanted to see for myself but it really wasn't as bad as people say it was (at least to me) cause I have seen worst!

This is a movie not suitable for food digestion, a lot of bizarre and disturbing scenes and really crazy , I can't even begin to describe the images.
Midori finds her mother dead, now as an orphan she must find a new home, she gets invited by a nice gentleman, only to realize that she's been duped by the gentleman who is a businessman and the his crew of bunch of deformed circus performances, despite their handicaps they bully and sexual harass poor Midori, Midori is literally in the circus of hell.
Also the movie has a lot of gore and animal kills that is uncomfortable to watch, but the most interesting about the movie is actually the story behind it, Hiroshi Harada, who is the director of the film couldn't get any company to work on this script and he got amateur voice actors in the movie, and the animation was made by himself, he even put his life savings just so he could release the move.
However the Japanese people didn't like the idea of the movie, as a matter of fact, some people went into his house and stole some footage and destroyed some scenes, and therefore Harada had to replace some scenes with photos and shortened the movie than expected.
Anyhow I give this movie 6/10 because I am a sucker for a hard work project but I must warn some sensitive viewers that this might too much disturbing scenes, you have been warned.
And I might add that the story had me interest though so it was worth my time.

Extremely crude and sad. Some people say this is art and a cult anime, not really sure.
This is a Chinese legend brought up to animation. Low budget animation, but so crude and evil story there is room to think if mankind evilness should be recreated this way or even seen again.
Be aware.

"Midori: The Girl in the Freak Show" is an anime film that is not for the faint of heart. It delves into the depths of human cruelty, the grotesque, and the macabre, creating a nightmarish world that is as captivating as it is repulsive.
The film follows the tragic journey of Midori, a young girl who is thrust into a nightmarish circus after a series of unfortunate events. The imagery and storytelling are surreal, dark, and unapologetically disturbing. The animation is both beautiful and grotesque, creating a sense of visual dissonance that perfectly complements the grim narrative.
The film doesn't shy away from exploring the darkest aspects of human nature, highlighting the cruelty and exploitation that can exist in the world. While it's not a film for everyone due to its graphic content, it serves as a stark reminder of the capacity for both evil and resilience in the human spirit.
"Midori" is a thought-provoking and challenging piece of art that pushes the boundaries of what anime can achieve. It's a film that will leave a lasting impact on those willing to explore its unsettling depths.
In conclusion, "Midori: The Girl in the Freak Show" is a masterpiece of the disturbing and grotesque, and it's a must-watch for fans of dark and unconventional anime. Just be prepared to be taken on a journey that is both visually stunning and emotionally harrowing.

Unique Art Style: The film has a distinctive and unconventional art style, which includes a mix of live-action and animation. This artistic approach contributes to the overall surreal and nightmarish atmosphere of the story.
Dark and Disturbing Themes: "Midori" explores dark and unsettling themes, including the harsh realities of life, exploitation, and the loss of innocence. The narrative doesn't shy away from portraying the darker aspects of human nature.
It's worth noting that "Midori" is not for everyone due to its graphic content and unsettling themes. Viewer discretion is advised, and it may not be suitable for those who are sensitive to disturbing or explicit content. If you are interested in unconventional and avant-garde anime with a focus on psychological horror, "Midori" might be worth exploring. However, it's essential to approach it with an awareness of its mature and challenging content.

It's quite funny that people think they need to be "gore experts" or whatever to enjoy this movie, and that some are even disappointed at the lack of gore. If you simply look for gore in movies, anime, etc, I don't know what to tell you. To only look at Shoujo Tsubaki for it's gore is appalling anyway. This deserves SO much more. It's a brilliant masterpiece in the medium of animation as a whole. It stands among some of the most breathtaking animated shots to ever be put to film. It sickens me that so much of this beautiful film is lost forever because some fools who love censorship found some of it to be too revolting, and because of their actions, we'll never have the complete film. It is lost to history forever. Luckily what we have tells the story pretty well anyway, and I believe the missing scenes aren't entirely plot heavy. regardless, please check out this film. only a complete philistine would look at this movie and call it anything less than an artistic marvel. To say that this movie isn't at least artistically brilliant is a joke.

It's sad that no one wanted to support the making of this film, yet Hiroshi didn't give up and spent five years of his life making this film. It's interesting to see how something so horrifying and scary can be beautiful.

I watched Midori on YouTube because I heard it was the most disturbing anime so I watched it and I wanna smack myself for watching it because it was disgusting and nothing was good about it but the art was pretty neat and well but everything else was so sick and cruel this anime shouldn't exist and it's only for people who want horror at its extreme or has a strong stomach to watch it definitely DO NOT watch this if you hate gore or have a weak stomach this anime even has anime cruelty!!!! I know the guy who made it did it all by himself but I don't know why the heck did he make this! It's disturbing rather than disturbing and it should be the most DISGUSTING anime of all time none of the scenes were good the characters stink all of it stinks only watch if you want horror at its extreme but I do not recommend this at all 0/10🤢🤢🤢

Midori is the most shocking anime I have seen yet and rates with Salo for its courageous exploration of brutality and commodification of the human body. It is a independent film and full credit to Hiroshi Harada for his dedication to art and fight against tyrannis censorship. Most can not and should watch this film rather it is because their own trauma history or offense to their sensibilities. Yet to those who are able and willing to sit through the film will experience a truly grotesque, yet beautiful cinematic work. This film takes risks and although it is not for most manages to capture one's attention with its unique animation, eerie atmosphere and of course, graphic content. I would say watch on our own peril, but for fans of extreme anime horror, mixed with sadomasochistic eroticism, Midori is a can't miss.
