Mike Flanagan’s latest film is a step away from horror, but the emotional impact remains strong. Here’s our The Life Of Chuck review.
Even if you’ve watched the trailer for Mike Flanagan’s The Life Of Chuck, you’d be forgiven if you didn’t have a clue what it’s about. In fact, I’ve seen the film and still find it difficult to summarise its plot. What I can tell you, though, is that The Life Of Chuck hasn’t left my brain since I watched it.
The mystery is intentional. Based on a novella by Stephen King, the film’s first chapter has Chiwetel Ejiofor...

Lauren LeFranc is staying in business with HBO.
Variety has learned exclusively that LeFranc, who developed and served as showrunner on “The Penguin,” has signed a two-year overall deal with HBO and HBO Max. LeFranc is also launching her own production banner, Acid and Tender Productions.
“I am thrilled to continue my creative partnership with HBO,” LeFranc said. “They have been unwavering in their support of my work on ‘The Penguin,’ and beyond. My company, Acid and Tender Productions, comes from a sincere desire to shepherd bold stories and perspectives from singular voices and artists I love. I came up in writers rooms and when they’re working, there’s nothing better. My hope is for Acid and Tender to become that kind of haven for writers and filmmakers who seek to tell authentic, off-kilter, character-driven stories, no matter the genre.”

John G. Avildsen's "Rocky" is one of the most surprising sleeper hits of all time. Released to theaters on December 3, 1976, the stand-up-and-cheer classic would go on to gross $117 million domestically against a $1.1 million budget and win three Oscars in a banger of a year that included all-timers like "Taxi Driver," "All the President's Men," and "Network." It was such a joyous experience (even though our underdog hero loses via split decision) that moviegoers went back for seconds and thirds just to reexperience the high of Sylvester Stallone's Philly palooka Rocky Balboa inexplicably going the 15-round distance against the seemingly unbeatable heavyweight champion of the world, Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers).

In a world of shared universes and cross-media franchises, many a studio executive has dreamed of a hit that goes from movies to television — or vice versa.
And while the ambition may be there, execution is a whole other thing. Making one good thing is hard enough. But two related good things in different formats?
You've gotta be joking.
That's what made HBO's The Penguin such a coup. Not only did it carry over the audience from Matt Reeves' hit The Batman, but it deepened the characterization of Colin Farrell's Oz Cobb, this universe's gangster-tinged take on the titular Gotham villain.
And according to showrunner Lauren LeFranc, that was no coincidence. The writer and producer, who has a ton of experience across genre series like Chuck and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., spoke with Gold Derby as a part of the "Meet the Experts" Emmys showrunners panel about how diving into...

There’s no shortage of “almost Supermans” in Hollywood. There are plenty of actors who came close to wearing the cape but never quite took flight. One of them is Devious Maids and Chuck actor Ryan McPartlin, who recently took a stroll down memory lane on Instagram, reminding everyone that in the early 2000s, Us Weekly claimed he was the “front-runner” to replace Christopher Reeve. But as fate would have it: he wasn’t. “Every time a new Superman movie hits theaters,” McPartlin wrote, “I’m transported back to the early 2000s when Us Weekly boldly declared that I was the front-runner to be the next Man of Steel. Spoiler alert: I wasn’t.” McPartlin, now 50, went on to praise Brandon Routh, the actor who eventually nabbed the role in Superman Returns (2006), saying, “@brandonjrouth was clearly born to wear the cape. And my family learned a valuable lesson that day:...

“The Life of Chuck” (2025) is an existential fantasy directed by Mike Flanagan and based on a short story by Stephen King. It is bound to be a sultry, irresistible temptation. A director known for transforming genre horror into something intimate and immediate—never flashy, never hollow—Mike Flanagan, adapting an unpublished novella from King’s 2020 collection If It Bleeds, feels, to a cinephile, like a film you can already see and feel before it even exists. The “Doctor Sleep” director takes the tale, embraces its unmathematical inquiries into mortality, and transforms it into one of the most light and feathery dramas in recent memory—about the vitality of relationships and the rhythm of dance.

This summer’s glowing box office numbers have put smiles on Hollywood’s corporate faces, if also a hint of concern. The message: The mythic summer blockbuster is alive and well, but is someone missing from the party?
On one level, the soaring return of Universal’s Jurassic brand and Warners’ Superman brand represent triumphs in Hollywood archeology. And the techie giants are in hot pursuit: F1 marks a brilliant breakthrough for Apple, and Amazon MGM before long will be unfurling a new Bond.
But in eons past the “summer hits” that stirred cinephiles represented as much a voyage of discovery as a branding mission. The “must see” movies of summers past included an American Graffiti (1973) or a Dog Day Afternoon (1975) or a Stand By Me (1986). They were surprises, not pre-sold commodities.
Even The Godfather (1972) and Jaws (1975) arrived in a mist of confusing rumors. Both were behind schedule and over...

The Life of Chuck is easily Mike Flanagan’s least scary offering, which is interesting to note considering the new adaptation of Stephen King’s novella is set around the pending apocalypse. What it is, however, is Flanagan’s coziest and most gentle offering, which helps explain why the drama won the highly coveted People’s Choice award at last fall’s Toronto International Film Festival – and could ride a wave of strong reviews into this fall’s Oscar race.

Some people might be surprised to hear this, but Tom Hiddleston is not the only star of Mike Flanagan’s “The Life of Chuck.” He’s not even the only Chuck! In Flanagan’s sweeping Stephen King adaptation, four different actors play everyman Chuck throughout various periods of his life. There’s Hiddleston, of course, as adult Chuck; Cody Flanagan (Mike and co-star Kate Siegel’s real-life child) as kid Chuck; Jacob Tremblay as teen Chuck; and first-time film actor Benjamin Pajak as tween Chuck.
It’s Pajak who will likely capture the most attention for his work here, even as he acts alongside legends like Mark Hamill and Mia Sara, thanks to his wonderfully open-hearted performance, plus plenty of dancing. While Pajak, just 12 years old at the time of filming, is no stranger to acting, the film is his very first film role. It’s an auspicious one at that,...

Plot: Luke Brunner is a veteran CIA operative who, up until recently, was on the verge of retirement. After his last mission in saving another operative – who just so happened to be his daughter – he’s back and face to face with new villains. This one is an old flame from Luke’s past who threatens to destroy the world…if she doesn’t destroy his life first.
Review: Two years ago, the first season of Fubar debuted to middling reviews, mine included. Fans seemed to enjoy seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger back in comedy mode while delivering some action alongside the jokes. Still, the effort was another generic offering that fell far below the bar of Arnold’s better efforts. With Netflix cancelling The Recruit while renewing The Night Agent, the streaming platform’s focus on quality over star power may bode poorly for Fubar, which has not changed much since season one.

Big action, bad decisions, and sharp jokes — these spy comedies have it all.
Comedy’s always been my thing — but I like it even more when there are secret missions, fake identities, and explosions in the mix. Spy comedies just hit different. You still get the cool world-building, slick action, and bad-ass leads, but now they’ve got sharp one-liners and totally chaotic side plots. I’m talking about shows where the agents are just as likely to ruin the mission as they are to save it — and somehow, that’s the fun. If you’re into smart, fast, funny shows with a little danger on the side, these are the seven best spy comedies streaming right now.

In 1843, the Danish philosopher and theologian Søren Kierkegaard wrote in his journal a passage which has echoed throughout time ever since, albeit one which is often shortened for easier consumption. The abridged and paraphrased quote is: "Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards." The full passage laments the paradox inherent within this axiom:
"It is really true what philosophy tells us, that life must be understood backwards. But with this one forgets the second proposition, that it must be lived forwards. A proposition which, the more it is subjected to careful thought, the more it ends up concluding precisely that life at any given moment cannot really ever be fully understood; exactly because there is no single moment where time stops completely in order for me to take position [to do this]: going backwards."

This article contains minor spoilers for "The Life of Chuck."
As the man behind shows like "The Haunting of Hill House" and underrated cinematic gems like "Hush," Mike Flanagan is one of our modern horror masters. Flanagan has shined especially brightly when adapting the works of Stephen King, with movies like "Doctor Sleep" and "Gerald's Game" to his name. Now, Flanagan has reunited with King for an adaptation of the author's novella "The Life of Chuck," which has been met with widespread critical acclaim -- and with good reason.
Those who see the movie and hang around for the credits will undoubtedly notice that Flanagan included a card that reads, "In memory of Scott Wampler." Indeed, Flanagan dedicated his latest movie to Wampler. But who is he, exactly? The late, great Scott Wampler was the co-host of the popular podcast "The Kingcast," all about the works of Stephen King. He...

Matthew Lillard contains multitudes. Across decades, the actor and entrepreneur has needled a distinct tattoo of himself onto the chest of popular culture. His boisterous character work in early films like Hackers, Scream, Slc Punk, and Serial Mom quickly left a permanent imprint on both genre and alternative cinema.
Yet, as his career turned the page toward more mainstream fare, it left no less of a cult residue for generations of weirdos. His perfect casting as Shaggy, the stoner-coded sweetheart of the Scooby-Doo franchise, remains a key figure in the zeitgeist. And Thirteen Ghosts, where he completely steals the show, is a stone-cold horror classic and an all-time personal favorite.
Now, with The Life of Chuck, Mike Flanagan’s latest theatrical adaptation of a Stephen King tale, Lillard embarks on yet another new chapter creatively. The film is a genre-bending story about three chapters in the life of an ordinary man named Charles Krantz.

As horror has solidified itself as one of the last remaining bankable bastions of cinema, Stephen King’s vast trove of writing has become a juggernaut of intellectual property. The author is to the genre what Marvel is to action. And few filmmakers understand the literary giant’s enduring appeal better than Mike Flanagan, who previously brought King’s Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep to the screen. (He also has a Carrie series in the works.)
But with The Life of Chuck, based on King’s novella of the same name from the 2020 collection If It Bleeds, Flanagan has a more expansive aim. This isn’t an act of adaptation so much as a bow in adoration. His goal with this filmic translation is to tout King’s bona fides as the humanist behind Stand by Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile—that is, as more than...

"The Walking Dead" may not have kept up with its highest of highs, but it's still, by many measures, one of the most successful cable TV shows of the 2010s. Based on Robert Kirkman's Image Comics series of the same name, the zombie series focused on Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), who awakens from a coma into an apocalypse populated by the undead. While Rick was the central character for much of the show's run, he was far from the only character contending with the reanimated corpses of the deceased.
Maggie Greene was one of those characters. First introduced in "The Walking Dead" season 2, Maggie went on to become one of the most important figures in the franchise. Not only did she appear in more than 140 episodes of the main series, but she also headlined the spin-off "The Walking Dead: Dead City" alongside Negan.

Zachary Levi was at the peak of his fame with roles in both the Dceu and MCU when he landed himself in controversy. When an X user asked him amid the Covid-19 crisis, “Do you agree or not that Pfizer is a real danger to the world?”, Levi replied, “Hardcore agree.” His anti-vaccine stance has since gotten him a lot of haters.
Interestingly, DC Studio head James Gunn was asked about the controversy at the time, when Levi was still part of the Dceu. Gunn didn’t bash Levi, and clarified that it didn’t make grounds for any strict actions against the actor. Levi also shared that he believed Gunn didn’t throw him under the bus.

Zachary Levi, the actor best known for his work in Chuck and as the superhero Shazam, is opening up about the professional fallout from expressing his political views, namely his support for Donald Trump. In a cover-story conversation with Variety, Levi revealed that his opinions have left some in Hollywood reluctant to work with him. According to Levi, he knew that this would be the probable outcome of his voicing his views.
"I know that there are people that would prefer not to work with me now because of my opinions. My team has let me know. They haven't given me any specific names, but there are people who prefer not to work with me at this time. And it's unfortunate. I knew that was probably going to happen. I didn't make this decision blindly or casually."

When Shazam: Fury of the Gods‘ reception was not very optimal for star Zachary Levi, the star turned heads when he pleaded directly with viewers on his Instagram Live to give the film a chance. It was an unorthodox method that many saw as part of a meltdown. Since then, the former Chuck star became increasingly controversial as he was outspoken about his personal views and his recent projects, like Harold and the Purple Crayon, didn’t match the kind of success that the first Shazam had put him on the path for. In a recent profile with Variety, Levi addresses his position on politics and his place within (or outside of) Hollywood.
One of the things he was inevitably asked was his interest in returning to the Shazam franchise. While Levi opposed the critical response of the second film, the actor maintains that making both movies was an immensely joyful experience.

After a handful of smaller roles in shows like Supernatural and Chuck, Lauren Cohan struck gold when she landed the career-defining gig as Maggie Greene (later Maggie Rhee) on AMC’s The Walking Dead. No one knows just how successful or unsuccessful a project will be when they first sign on, but — as we know now — the small-screen adaptation of the graphic novel series first penned by Robert Kirkman grew into a massive hit. So, when Cohan parted ways with the production after the first few episodes of the ninth season, fans were in shock. Eventually, it came out that her departure was related to payment discrepancies — a feeling that women in Hollywood (and so many other industries) know all too well.

We're not the boss of you now, but we still strongly recommend revisiting the classic sitcom "Malcolm in the Middle." Created in 2000 by "Little House on the Prairie" alum Linwood Boomer, the series ran for seven seasons and over 150 episodes before it ended in 2006. Though it may seem somewhat predictable now, it was a fairly subversive program at the time with regard to how chaotic and internally hostile the central Wilkerson family could be.
The actors who portrayed the Wilkersons -- and the neighbors, classmates, relatives, and co-workers they terrorize -- were an amusing mix of established sitcom stalwarts and up-and-coming child actors, a dynamic encapsulated by Malcolm actor Frankie Muniz and his on-screen father Bryan Cranston. With nearly a decade of television between us and the series finale and a reunion miniseries reportedly on the way, we're more curious than ever what the cast of "Malcolm in the Middle" is up to now,...

NBC spy show "Chuck" was about a regular guy named Chuck (Zachary Levi) who works at a big-box electronics store called Buy More. After he inadvertently has a CIA supercomputer downloaded to his brain, Chuck becomes a super-spy, finding himself embroiled in all sorts of espionage antics ... all while trying to hold down his day job.
"Chuck" picked up a loyal fan base thanks to its trademark blend of quirky humor and thrilling action. Though the show was repeatedly in danger of cancellation, fans rallied around the series, somehow convincing NBC to pick it up any time it seemed on the bubble. "The fans of 'Chuck' have been incredibly passionate and supportive of the show," NBC entertainment marketing president Adam Stotsky told TheWrap in 2009, when the network leaned into all the online chatter with an online game that encouraged fans to spread the word about the show on social media.

Serial killer Israel Keyes will be the subject of a new TV series, with Maureen Callahan‘s American Predator: The Hunt for the Most Meticulous Serial Killer of the 21st Century serving as the source material.
Deadline reports that “Queen of the South” showrunner Scott Rosenbaum is adapting the true crime book.
Keyes is known to have murdered at least three people between 2001 and his arrest in 2012 and is suspected of killing at least eight others across the U.S. He was also a bank robber, burglar, arsonist, kidnapper, and sex offender. He died by suicide while awaiting trial at the age of 34.
Keyes’ scrupulous modus operandi included flying to a city, renting a car, and breaking into a stranger’s house. He would then abduct his victims, kill them, and dispose of their bodies before returning home to Alaska to resume his life as a construction worker devoted to his only daughter.

Exclusive: Scott Rosenbaum, showrunner of USA Network’s Queen of the South, is adapting Maureen Callahan’s book American Predator: The Hunt for the Most Meticulous Serial Killer of the 21st Century, as a television series.
The book investigates one of America’s most elusive and terrifying criminals, Israel Keyes.
Keyes was a predator who struck all over the United States. He buried “kill kits”–cash, weapons, and body-disposal tools–in remote locations across the country. Over the course of fourteen years, he would fly to a city, rent a car, and drive thousands of miles in order to use his kits. He would break into a stranger’s house, abduct his victims in broad daylight, and kill and dispose of them in mere hours. And then he would return home to Alaska, resuming life as a quiet, reliable construction worker devoted to his only daughter.

Well, Mike Flanagan has done it again. He's taken a Stephen King book and adapted it for the big screen, and the first trailer makes it look like The Life of Chuck is going to be a genuinely emotional epic.
In The Life of Chuck, Tom Hiddleston stars as Chuck Krantz, with the story told in reverse, sort of like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The saga begins with Chuck's death and goes back in time to his early childhood. Neon shared the official trailer, which is embedded above.
As you can see from some of the selected pull quotes featured in the trailer, critics are loving The Life of Chuck, with some even going so far as to call it the best King adaptation yet.

Mathematically, it would take nearly 10 days for someone to binge-watch all 15 seasons of Supernatural. That’s 327 episodes—a number that’s almost an urban legend in itself on anyone’s watchlist. Besides, Eric Kripke’s fantasy drama, which was sadly discontinued in 2020, still stands today as the longest-running US TV show in its genre.
Getting that kind of success, especially before the streaming explosion, speaks volumes about the immense hype that Supernatural generated back in its day. Now, most fans point to the undeniable chemistry of the Winchester brothers (Jensen Ackles & Jared Padalecki) for making the show a mainstay on TV for 15 straight years.

The teaser for The Life of Chuck has finally arrived. The feature, which is based on the Stephen King novella of the same name, is the latest King adaptation written and directed by Mike Flanagan, who also made Doctor Sleep and Gerald's Game. The upcoming The Life of Chuck, which is not a horror movie like Flanagan's previous adaptations, stars Tom Hiddleston in the title role as an ordinary man whose life is depicted in three parts, in reverse chronological order, beginning with his death. The cast also includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Matthew Lillard, Harvey Guillén, and Mark Hamill.
Neon has now unveiled the first official teaser trailer for The Life of Chuck. The minute-long video opens with the sound of a clock ticking playing over a vast expanse of starry sky. The rhythm is then matched by other sounds from Chuck's (Tom Hiddleston) life, including a heart monitor and a blinking streetlight.
