Qing chun wan sui

THE SINGING ESCORT is another lame musical from the Shaw studio, made right at the cusp of their fame with martial arts cinema. I'm so pleased that the latter subsumed the former because I'm not sure how many of these twee productions I can watch! Bruce Lee's girlfriend Betty Ting Pei plays a nightclub singer in Japan who becomes involved with a handsome male singer, played by Jimmy Lim, but he has ulterior motives. There are plenty of musical numbers here, none of them good, along with drawn-out plotting and weak characterisation. They do make a half-hearted effort to include some stock villains towards the climax, but they make no impact whatsoever.
