Amazing recovery of security

I remember how much I loved watching this series as I was growing up (I also really enjoyed the "spoof" of the series as done in "Get Smart".

I remember sending in for the "Agents Kit". All I actually remember from the kit was the identification card. I changed my agent number and Department name to be Napoleon Solo's😄

Researching it today I'm amazed that, in the very first episode, THRUSH compromised UNCLE headquarters and, somehow, they were able to keep the headquarters relatively secure for most of the remaining episodes.

Another pretty unbelievable aspect is UNCLE's use of a civilian in such a dangerous covert operation.

Ok, ok, I realize it"s a tv show and it's entertainment, not reality.

I still find it completely enjoyable.

Pilot

I just saw this episode on cable, it was the pilot for the show. Interestingly the show was called "Solo" at the beginning of this episode. They must have subsequently renamed it "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." Leo G. Carroll did not appear in this episode. The head of U.N.C.L.E. was called Mr. Allison in this episode and was played by Will Kuluva. I notice that it notes "scenes deleted" next to his name on the "Vulcan Affair" page, but the version I saw did have Mr. Kuluva's scenes in it. David McCallum's Ilya character had a very small role in this episode. I also noticed that this episode included the scene with Solo getting shot at while behind a piece of bulletproof glass. They used this in the intro to the show in later episodes.

There was a dispute over what the name of the villainous spy agency would be. The original name was THRUSH, but it was felt that this was too close to the name of the Russian spy agency SMERSH, so the studio ordered a name change for the film version. Hence, the name was replaced by "WASP" for the film version, and Robert Vaughn dubbed the word into the dialogue for all characters. The name THRUSH was used for the rest of the series, though.

Blooper
At about 41 minutes in Solo kicks the water pipe loose from the coupling. This would be impossible since the pipe it threaded would have to have been unscrewed to remove it.
