Exclusive: Judy Reyes is set as a series regular opposite Kaitlin Olson and Daniel Sunjata in ABC‘s character-based procedural drama pilot based on TF1’s popular detective series Hpi (High Intellectual Potential), from top TV and film writer Drew Goddard and ABC Signature, where Goddard and his Goddard Textiles are based.

Written by Goddard, the untitled Hpi remake centers on Morgan (Olson), a single mom with three kids and an exceptional mind who helps solve an unsolvable crime when she rearranges some evidence during her shift as a cleaner for the police department. When they discover she has a knack for putting things in order because of her high intellectual potential she is brought on as a consultant to work with a by-the-book seasoned detective, Karadec (Sunjata), and together they form an unusual and unstoppable team.

Netflix has revealed the first images from “Hunger,” an upcoming Thai drama film in which a woman in her twenties chases her dreams in the unsavory world of fine dining.

The film stars Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying, locally known as ‘Aokbab’ and internationally recognized as the star of “Bad Genius,” in the lead role. She plays alongside Gunn Svasti Na Ayudhya (“Diary of Tootsies”) as the sous-chef who gives her a break and Nopachai ‘Peter’ Jayanama as her ingenious and intolerant rival.

Directed by Sitisiri Mongkolsiri and produced by Kongdej Jaturanrasame and Soros Sukhum (“Memoria”) through Song Sound Productions, the show is expected to be uploaded in April.

When the SAG Awards announced in May that it would not longer air on TNT and TBS, a spokesperson insisted that finding a new home for the ceremony “is not unusual and has occurred several times over the history of the SAG Awards. This is no different.”

Halloween Ends is coming out at the end of the month, putting the end to a 50-year saga featuring cast changes, reboots, and remakes. One of those remakes was famously made by Rob Zombie. While it was not critically successful, it made a lot of money, even getting a sequel.

Many other horror remakes, however, have been far less well-received than Halloween. From remakes that completely miss the point of the original to projects that are too close to their inspiration to present anything new, horror films have had some dicey history when it comes to remakes, something Rotten Tomatoes makes very clear.

Smile just recently revived one of the most interesting horror tropes, that of the unavoidable fate. The film features a terrifying curse that passes from person to person by trauma, sealing the fate of its victims in a matter of days.

Movies like this often give the "unknown" factor of its story absolute power over their characters, condemning them to an inescapable destiny as they try to fight against something they don't comprehend. It's often cruel and painful to watch, but truly works in making a horror movie more relatable and immersive and in doing so, delivers the intended level of horror to the viewer.

Triangle (2009)

Triangle is the kind of movie that provides viewers with no hints of where it's heading, yet the narrative is so chilling and full of surprises that all the layers and layers added to the main mystery only makes the whole thing more engaging with every scene.

Exclusive: Mina Sundwall (Lost in Space) and Michael Cimino have been set to lead the thriller podcast series Jane Anonymous, which will premiere exclusively on Apple Podcasts and the Fictionz App.

The series based on the novel of the same name by Laurie Faria Stolarz (Blue is for Nightmares) was adapted by Stephanie Wu (Green Plastic Sandals). It will follow Jane (Sundwall), a 18-year-old girl who fights to escape a kidnapper—examining her relationship with a fellow captive (Cimino), and their struggle to understand that everything they thought they knew might all be a lie.

Andres Rosende, who produces and edits the popular Bad Friends podcast from comedians Bobby Lee and Andrew Santino, is directing the series, which will consist of five, 20-minute episodes. The first is slated for release on June 2nd. Sundwall and Cimino are exec producing alongside Fictionz, which is serving as the project’s financier and distributor.

“The Lost Daughter,” a psychological drama that marked the directing debut of Maggie Gyllenhaal, was named the best feature at the 37th Film Independent Spirit Awards on Sunday. It was one of a leading three prizes that the movie about a middle-aged professor forced to grapple with her life choices earned at the ocean-side ceremony.

“Red Rocket’s” Simon Rex and “Zola’s” Taylour Page earned best lead actor and actress prizes for portraying a faded porn star and a part-time stripper, respectively, a sign of the edgy projects that the Spirits were designed to highlight. The awards aired on IFC and were handed out in a tent next to the Santa Monica Pier during a boozy ceremony that stretched on for two hours and change.

The Spirits mostly spread the wealth. “Passing” and “Zola” won two prizes apiece, but no other films made repeat visits to the podium to accept statues.

Gloria Fan, former VP Current Programming at 20th Television, has joined Disney Branded Television as head of Current Series.

In the newly created role, Fan will oversee original series for both Disney Channel and Disney+, reporting to Reena Singh, SVP Development and Current Series.

At Disney Channel, Fan will oversee such series as Sulphur Springs, Emmy-nominated Raven’s Home, and upcoming Ultraviolet & Black Scorpion; and for Disney+, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and the upcoming Sneakerella, National Treasure and the Beauty & The Beast prequel.

Most recently, Fan’s work has included National Geographic’s scripted series Genius and The Hot Zone, FX’s Mayans M.C., NBC’s Ordinary Joe and Showtime’s Homeland.

She also worked to develop Amazon Studios’ The Promised Neverland, based on the popular Japanese manga/anime; Freeform’s Aznbbygrl with Natalie Chaidez and Dinh Thai; and the series adaptation of ESPN’s 30 for 30 documentary Blackfeet Boxing: Not Invisible.

In 2004, Banjong Pisanthanakun and then-collaborator Parkpoom Wongpoom kickstarted their directorial careers with “Shutter,” a supernatural thriller so effective it’s been remade (albeit to lesser effect) abroad three times to date. Less likely to translate that widely is Pisanthanakun’s latest solo effort, “The Medium.” Marking his return to straight horror after a couple romances and one more comedically slanted genre film (“Pee Mak”), this demonic possession saga is too thoroughly Thai in milieu and details to risk being just another derivative of “The Exorcist.”

Still, cultural specificity only brings so much freshness to an overlong tale that ultimately trades in too many familiar tropes, from the victim’s evil-grinning, black-gunk-spewing

The awards season keeps shifting: the Film Independent Spirit Awards will move away from its usual pre-Oscars ceremony date to one three weeks earlier. The 37th annual Indie Spirits will now take place on Sunday, March 6, with the Oscars following on Sunday, March 27.

Deadline notes “this is a huge break with tradition and comes as the Spirit Awards look to get more traction with the viewing public, as well as exert more possible influence on potential Oscar winners as this new date falls the day before the Oscar nominees luncheon and also before final balloting begins for the Academy on March 17.”

Still, it’s not the first break in tradition for the awards which, last year, opted to air a full three days before the Oscars, thanks to a televised virtual event hosted by Melissa Villaseñor. Traditionally, the awards play out on the Saturday afternoon before the Oscars on a beach in Santa Monica.

With the Oscars and the Golden Globes overlooking female directors this year, it was the Independent Spirit Awards who outdid them by handing its Best Feature award to Lulu Wang’s The Farewell, Best First Feature to Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart and Best Documentary to Julia Reichert’s American Factory.

The film begins in an airport, which is really the precursor to the inter continental journey we will embark on throughout the 108 minute runtime. We follow three different couples living very different lives on three different continents. Parisian immigrant Arthur’s visa is due to expire so he is trying to convince his career-focused partner Vivian to come back to Asia with him. American Amanda is dealing with the difficulties of marrying into a Japanese family to a widower, who is still carrying his demons with him.

Oh, horror movies. Market research showed that more people knew the phrase Texas Chainsaw Massacre than the number of people who had seen it or even knew what it was about. So you know what that means! Reboot time! Now, there's nothing inherently wrong with rebooting a popular film and/or franchise. But there's also no rule that says they have to be bad. Nevertheless, crappy remakes keep plaguing horror fans. We're looking at 10 horror movie reboots that went horribly wrong.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is easily one of the scariest movies of all time, no question. Loosely based on true events, put together in the early '70s on a shoestring budget, this thing played like some sorta snuff film. It's chilling. With its absurd title, which recalls an era of enjoyable B-grade Sci-Fi/horror films from decades past, The Lazarus Effect seems disappointingly inclined to revel in a shallow pool of absurd, preternatural devices. Though its third act regression into silliness may seem wholly unsurprising to a majority of its core audience, the pedigree of talent both in front of and behind the camera would seem to dictate otherwise. At its outset, there’s a decent degree of mounting dread, even as we expect the consequences of these medical students’ silly actions to quickly reign a terrible wrath upon their ambitious, presumptuous brains. Reanimating the dead may seem unnatural and downright scary to someone who’s watched the human race become dinner for the living dead in countless zombie movies. For a group of medical students in The Lazarus Effect, though, reversing death could lead to a new understanding of life. But as evidenced in the film’s first trailer, scientific discoveries can come with painful sacrifices.

A Blumhouse Productions film from Relativity Studios, The Lazarus Effect was directed by David Gelb (Jiro Dreams of Sushi) off a screenplay by Luke Dawson (2008’s Shutter) and Jeremy Slater (The Fantastic Four reboot). The film follows “a group of medical students who discover a way to bring dead patients back to life”, and it stars Mark Duplass, Olivia Wilde, Donald Glover, Evan Peters and Sarah Bolger.

If you heard that Olivia Wilde, Donald Glover (formerly of Community), and Mark Duplass were starring in a film together, you might expect something along the lines of a dramedy. But on the contrary, an upcoming movie starring all three actors looks to be brimming with wide-eyed horror, as evidenced in the first image from The Lazarus Effect, which sounds a bit like a mash-up of Re-Animator and Flatliners.

EW debuted the first look at The Lazarus Effect, which features Olivia Wilde holding a surgical tool to her head while her super-dilated eyes glare above a slight—perhaps even sinister—smile.

From Blumhouse Productions, The Lazarus Effect was directed by David Gelb (Jiro Dreams of Sushi) off a screenplay by Luke Dawson (2008’s Shutter) and Jeremy Slater (The Fantastic Four reboot). The sci-fi/horror film hits theaters on February 27th.

Toshio, the ghost boy who made audiences scared of cat meowing, is back. After being announced just a few months ago, an official trailer has already been released for Ju-on: Owari no Hajimari, or The Grudge: Beginning of the End, the seventh entry in the popular Japanese Ju-on horror franchise.

Set to be released in Japan on June 28th, Ju-on: Owari no Hajimari is written and directed by Masayuki Ochiai (2008 remake of Shutter) and stars Nozomi Sasaki and Kai Kobayashi. This is the first Japanese Ju-on film since 2009′s Ju-on: White Ghost (2009).

“An elementary school teacher named Yui visits the home of a boy named Toshio Saeki who’s been absent from school for a long period of time. When she arrives, she re-lives the horrific tragedy which occurred in the Saeki household 10 years earlier. A cardboard box left in a closet holds the key to revealing a long-hidden truth.

Over the summer we told you about an upcoming zombie flick called Reawakening, which was building up a pretty respectable cast. Though we hadn't heard anything in the past couple of months, it has returned to our radar today with a brand new name as well as a release date.

As reported by Variety, Reawakening has title morphed into Lazarus, and Lionsgate has set a U.S. theatrical date of January 30th, 2015. Refresh your memory with all the undead details below!

"Once Upon a Time" star Sarah Bolger has signed on for active duty in Lionsgate's upcoming Reawakening, and after watching her deal with fairy tale characters so long, it should be interesting to see how she handles the return of the deceased.

Donald Glover and Evan Peters have signed on to star in Reawakening for Lionsgate and director David Gelb. We reported last April that the directorial quartet Radio Silence (V/H/S) were in talks to direct, but they are no longer involved.

The story, written by Luke Dawson (Shutter), follows a group of students who find a way to bring the dead back to life. They soon discover that there are dire consequences to those actions. Donald Glover and Evan Peters will play members of this research team, alongside the previously-attached Mark Duplass and Olivia Wilde.

Jason Blum is producing through his Blumhouse Studios company, with Lionsgate's Erik Feig and John Sacchi overseeing the project for the studio. No production schedule was given.
