The talent isn’t just on screen in writer/director Macon Blair’s The Toxic Avenger; it’s just as stacked behind the camera. That even extends to the gore, with legendary Tippett Studio handling some of the film’s bloodiest and most outrageous VFX moments.
Tippett Studio, founded by Academy Award-winning VFX artist and stop-motion animator Phil Tippett, is no stranger to gore. The studio has covered extensive ground in the genre space since its launch in 1984, including horror movies like Alien: Romulus, Blade 2, and Piranha 3D. Today’s movie simply shouldn’t exist. Well, to be fair, a lot of movies shouldn’t exist. But that’s not what I mean. Not because it’s bad. Because it is unlikely in every sense of the word. It’s a film that features an acclaimed director at the height of his popularity taking on a 3D piranha spring break film featuring copious amounts of nudity and Jerry O’Connell’s penis. There’s an Oscar winning actor and Oscar nominated actress fighting against angry fish whose special effects would have looked bad in a late 90s McDonald’s Filet O Fish advertisement…much less on the big screen...

Obnoxious online celebrities must fight for their lives while the entire world watches in Skillhouse, yet the in-universe fanfare is unbelievable. Josh Stolberg writes and directs, but disappointingly, his screenplay isn’t on par with career standouts like Piranha 3D or Saw X. The emaciated story, washed-out lighting, and grating performances are as unlikable as the self-absorbed TikTok problem child and star Bryce Hall, whose former content creator mansion “The Sway House” doubles as the titular Skill House. There are plenty of meta parallels given how Skillhouse inhabits a defunct influencer haven, but it’s a superficial, poorly told homicide party that offers nothing besides cheap thrills with no virality.
The film stars Hall—famous for endangering lives by throwing Covid-19 lockdown parties and real-life assault charges—as a “fictional” take on his unlikable online personality, Carter Swick. Poor Carter’s grieving after the heinous murder of his vapid Insta-celeb...

We all talk about the seismic impact Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" had in shaping the quintessential summer blockbuster, but even greater was the renewed interest it generated in the creature feature. Everyone wanted to cash in on the killer animal movie craze after "Jaws," with films like "Orca: The Killer Whale," "Grizzly" and "Alligator" arriving in its wake. The issue was that plenty of producers wanted to hop aboard the bandwagon and make their own hit, yet "Jaws" was itself the rare combination of B-movie thrills and top-tier filmmaking, and it remains the gold standard. With that said, however, there's still a considerable amount of craft on display in the aforementioned movies. Then there were filmmakers like Joe Dante, who had the right idea and didn't even attempt to recapture the same prestige, instead leaning in a much more humorous direction with his efforts on 1978's "Piranha."

When it comes to physical media, there always has to be a concern for degradation. We saw it with VHS, Cassette Tapes, and Laser Discs. Eventually they become unwatchable. DVD was supposed to fix that issue, giving us the same experience each time, and with a much longer shelf life than laser discs (which are currently dropping like flies). And judging on Bumbray’s article about Warner Bros titles, the issue is as present as ever. But those are DVDs. That’s two whole generations ago and there’s a reason we’ve since switched! What about Blu-rays?
Blu-rays were actually made with the intention of lasting 100 years. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t issues that spring up. Any discs that have two layers, such as Bd-50s (which have 50 Gb of storage versus 25 Gb for standard) are more likely to degrade as...

It’s hard to not be drawn by the inherent absurdity of Cocaine Bear, a film that, much like its titular character, charges headfirst into chaos with reckless abandon. Directed by Elizabeth Banks, this action-horror-comedy hybrid takes a kernel of truth – the story of a bear who ingested a large quantity of cocaine in 1985 – and spins it into a high-energy bloodbath, replete with severed limbs, mauling, and a bear behaving in ways that defy both nature and, in some cases, CGI physics. But for all its lurid appeal and promise of midnight-movie mayhem, Cocaine Bear struggles to sustain its manic energy across an entire feature-length runtime, leaving it more of a party trick than a cult classic.
A drug smuggler drops a shipment of cocaine over a national park, and a black bear finds itself consuming vast amounts of it. What follows is a string of intertwining storylines populated by a game cast,...

Adam Scott had a bad feeling about Severance, and not just because of its eerie premise. Before stepping into the unsettling world of Lumon Industries, he read the script and felt an immediate sense of dread.
Something about it felt too real, like a warning rather than fiction. Thankfully, that nightmare scenario never materialized, but the psychological thriller still rattled audiences with its mind-bending take on work-life balance.

While most people recognize Adam Scott these days for his starring role in Apple TV's Severance, he's certainly no stranger to the horror genre. He's appeared in the likes of Krampus, Piranha 3D, and Hellraiser: Bloodline, and will be featured next in Osgood Perkins' The Monkey. He's also been tapped to headline the new flick by Irish director Damian McCarthy, which comes hot on the heels of his 2024 breakout hit Oddity.
Per Variety, Scott will star in the supernatural horror film Hokum, which is slated to begin filming in Ireland later this month. This will mark only McCarthy's third feature, following not only Oddity last year, but 2020's Caveat, which was equally unhinged (remember the bunny?). Peter Coonan (Bad Sisters) and David Wilmot (Bodkin) are also on board to star, and based on the brief synopsis below, it appears as if McCarthy is sticking with what he does best,...

Adam Scott, whose horror credentials include “Little Evil,” “Krampus” and “Piranha 3D” — and go all the way back to 1996’s “Hellraiser: Bloodline” — is returning to the genre.

Paul Rudd and Jack Black just released a video announcing that their comedic remake of Anaconda will hit theaters on Christmas 2025. Because what better way to spend the holidays than by watching a new entry in the franchise that gave us a giant CGI snake vomiting Jon Voight’s corpse?
Dropping an awkward promo that contains no footage from the actual movie may not be the best indication that Anaconda will be a great movie. But, hey, at least they promised us a “big fucking snake.”
Some folks seem to be pretty skeptical about the prospect of an Anaconda remake — and not just because Anaconda was literally just remade earlier this year in China. Beat this Paul Rudd:

A while back, Cocaine Bear surprised everyone with its box office haul. For fans of animal attack movies, this is not a shock. People love animal attack films and can’t get enough of them. I’m not sure if it’s the man vs. nature theme of the films, the animals themselves getting revenge on humans, or just the all-around fun these films bring. No matter what, they are enjoyable for audiences in theaters. There has been a long history of animals attacking humans on film. Some films that are classified as ‘classic’ cinema fall into the animal attack category. We can always use more movies of animals rampaging through humans on the big screen. What are some of the best animal attack movies?

It’s not often that Quentin Tarantino comments on new films, more or less for the reason that he doesn’t want to slam someone who is actively creating art. If he disses one, that could spell the end of that movie – and its director – before it had a chance. So when he does talk about a new release, it’s usually only positive. And that’s just what happened with Alexandre Aja’s killer alligator movie Crawl, which he didn’t just love but named one of his favorite movies of 2019.
That Tarantino loved Crawl was just the sort of boost Aja needed. As he told The Hollywood Reporter, “It was such a nice surprise. I was really, really excited. I’ve met with Quentin a few times, and one of the times, we had dinner together in Paris right before I was going to make Piranha 3D. So...

A founding member of the “New Extremity” movement that brought French horror filmmakers to the attention of international audiences in the early oughts, writer-director Alexandre Aja parlayed his fearless, uncompromising approach to the horror genre into a filmmaking career into an international career outside of his native France. Beginning with a promising collaboration with Wes Craven, the 1976 remake of The Hills Have Eyes, through middling efforts and the one-off standout, Piranha 3D, Aja overcame mid-career stagnancy with Crawl, a bloody, gory, pulpy “animals amok” eco-horror. Aja’s latest horror film, Never Let Go, shifts the setting from the alligator-filled, riverside Florida town of Crawl or the terrors of outer space in Aja’s last film, Oxygen, to a post-apocalyptic forest somewhere in the...

Once upon a time, there was a filmmaker named Alexandre Aja. His career was fascinating in the way it wasn't strictly auteurist, for while every director has their unique stylistic tics and proclivities, not everyone has a distinctive, strong signature. Aja has certainly always been a genre filmmaker, one who's interested in subversion and twists, in playing around with the conventions of genre, and in being unafraid to use audience's sympathies against them. Whether it's been in the brutal, New French Extremity slashers of "High Tension" and "The Hills Have Eyes," the gleefully exploitative "Piranha 3D," the literary roots of "Horns" and "The 9th Life of Louis Drax," or the suspense exercises of "Crawl" and "Oxygen," Aja has always found ways to surprise and upset (in every sense of the word) with his films.

Splat Pack veteran Alexandre Aja tries his hand at family-in-peril horror along the lines of the Quiet Place franchise with Never Let Go. But mostly, the French director just succeeds in making us miss his entertainingly trashy swerves into B-movie pulp, with creature features built around ravenously bitey carnivorous fish (Piranha 3D) or giant Florida gators riled up by a hurricane and flood (Crawl). Whatever their strengths and weaknesses, those movies were fun popcorn entertainment with teeth. Fun is banished from Aja’s latest, which starts out mildly intriguing and chalks up a few bracing jump scares before running out of juice.

Although the upcoming Halle Berry vehicle Never Let Go looks promising, the post-apocalyptic horror movie also seems like it might revisit a 21-year-old slasher movies terrible twist. Broadly speaking, 2003s Haute Tension was a pretty perfect calling card for French horror director Alexandre Aja. Within three years of the French indie horror movies release, Aja was directing a big-budget remake of Wes Cravens The Hills Have Eyes. 2009s Piranha 3D followed, as well as 2013s fantasy horror Horns. However, while Alexandre Ajas horror movies were mostly financial successes, it is important to note Haute Tensions limitations.
The twist ending of Haute Tension never sat right with critics, as many reviewers felt that its outlandish revelations undid a lot of the movies effective tension and suspense. Since then, Aja has consistently struggled to win over critics, with 2007s P2, Horns, and 2016s The 9th of Louis Drax all earning less than 50% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Alexandre Aja, the director of horror gems like Crawl, is back for another stab at the genre, and this time, he has a Hollywood legend in the lead. Before rewatching Mirrors (get it Here), I was a little confused as to why it’s either forgotten or, honestly, kind of hated on. It was one of those movies that I saw in theaters when it came out and then have clear memories of when it came to my Blockbuster for rent. It’s got a fun cast of reliables and was directed by one of the early 2000s freshest and goriest directors. The director has gone on to have a steady and varied career and his new movie starring Halle Berry called Never Let Go sounds as intriguing as ever. After watching Mirrors again, I still really enjoyed it, but I now understand why it has the reputation it has and why it’s perfect for a black sheep. Let’s take a look but maybe be wary of any mirrors that don’t look exactly right.

Released in 2019, Alexandre Aja‘s Crawl put Kaya Scodelario up against a category 5 hurricane and a pack of hungry alligators, and the thrilling mix of action and suspense-horror proved to be a hit with audiences at the box office. On a $13 million production budget, Crawl scared up over $91 million worldwide, with sequel talks beginning almost immediately.
What’s the latest on Crawl 2, you might be wondering? THR reports today that Paramount Pictures is “deep in development” on the sequel, with Aja returning to direct! Andrew Deutschman and Jason Pagan (Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension) are writing.
The Hollywood Reporter notes, “Crawl 2 will feature a new cast and a new location, in this case the more urban dangers of New York City, according to sources.”

For as long as there have been films, there have been filmmakers attempting to enhance the theatrical experience through the use of gimmicks. From the red-eyed skeletons of William Castle to the “odorama” cards of John Waters’ Polyester, gimmicks are the puns of the filmmaking world: memorable and effective in small quantities, but annoying when overused.
That’s why I get why so many people reject 3D cinema. After all, modern theater screens ended up becoming oversaturated with lazily post-converted cash-grabs rather than movies that were shot on actual stereoscopic cameras. However, having just recently fixed my own aging 3D TV and binge-watched dozens of gimmicky genre films, I’m pleased to say that there are a surprising number of fun 3D experiences beyond the usual suspects.
With that in mind, here’s a list recommending six underrated horror movies that were shot in 3D!

Could it be? Are the "Shark Horror" gods smiling upon us from Atlantis? Xavier Gens' Under Paris blends the bureaucratic foolhardiness of Jaws with Deep Blue Sea’s tempo. While science-based ecological themes get murky, the film shines at its most chaotic. A rogue female mako swimming France' Seine River brings shades of Dick Maas' Amsterdamned or Uncaged, varying takes on horrific (and preposterous) scenarios in major metropolitan areas. Don't look to Under Paris for grounded realism or bulletproof storytelling, but compared to the recent deluge of utterly impotent fin flicks over the last few years? Gens' aquatic thriller on Netflix is like stumbling upon the Holy Grail of Shark Horror.

Never Let Go arrives in theaters on September 27, 2024. This cabin has a rope/pulley system & they must be attached to you when leaving the house. The monsters/entities (they are very vague on what the threat is but its something that is physical) can’t get you with the rope attached to you and so they (monsters?) are trying to convince one child to doubt the rope safety. They want them to detach and if so, we see that it would put them in grave danger. The kids are twins born in a house that they have never left because of the dangers on the outside. Forty-nine years after playing a major role in the Steven Spielberg classic Jaws (and fourteen years after making an appearance in Alexandre Aja’s Piranha 3D), Richard Dreyfuss has been cast in another film that promises to be packed with aquatic thrills, Vigilante Diaries director Christian Sesma’s Into the Deep. This one managed to get all the way into post-production before catching the attention of the folks at The Daily Jaws.

More and more remakes. So many remakes. Not all are good, some would even say that most remakes are trash. However, some are good, some are great even. This leads us to this movie, the remake of Maniac (watch it Here) released to the general public in 2013. While some hated it and with reason, others loved it, also with reason. The film is one of those that made changes that worked for the story and helped bring it to the new audience, who then turned around and saw the original. Well, some of them did. However, this remake didn’t exactly hit it big at the box office and it still seems to be finding its audience.

Underrated horror movies explore the depths of the ocean, depicting Lovecraftian horrors lurking below the surface. Films like Leviathan and Underwater immerse viewers in claustrophobic, deep-sea suspense and terrifying battles with grotesque monsters. Deep Rising offers a lighter tone with a mix of comedy, horror, and action, while Dagon delivers a bloody twist on Lovecraft's eerie tales.
While a lot of famous horror movies have made the sea scary, underrated outings that explore the depths of the ocean can be particularly chilling. Horror movies set largely at sea are nothing new. Ever since Steven Spielberg’s Jaws helped define the summer blockbuster back in 1975, creature features have seen beaches flooded with all manner of sea monsters. From 1978’s Piranha all the way to 2018’s The Meg, the multiplex has often been home to sea-based horror stories. However, only a few choice horror movies explored the darkest depths of the ocean...

There are some movies that are so absurd and bizarre, that we can't help but be intrigued by them. And a movie about a killer sloth is certainly one of them. Slotherhouse toys with many genres, and offers up a slasher/animal attack movie not to miss. It's utterly ridiculous. But what do you expect when you tune into a horror comedy movie with an agile, acrobatic, highly intelligent, and incredibly strong sloth, slaughtering an entire sorority house in the most hilarious ways possible? By the trailer and synopsis alone, you know exactly what to expect.
While Slotherhouse undoubtedly has a few issues, mainly some weird dialogue (which would be horrendously awkward elsewhere but actually kind of fits in this campy film), Slotherhouse is at the end of day one of the most entertaining flicks of 2023.
Throughout the past decade, we have seen some pretty outlandish and ridiculous animal attack movies.

No one needed a bigger megalodon after 2018’s shockingly dull shark exploit, “The Meg.” But we’re getting one anyway with Ben Wheatley’s outsized shipwreck “Meg 2: The Trench,” a dimwitted sequel committed to plunge into the depths of agonizing boredom, doing so at 25,000 feet, to be exact.
At least the initial chapter came with something that resembled a story. No such luck here, thanks to an inexplicably broad script by Dean Georgaris and Jon and Erich Hoeber (the same trio that penned the first tedious installment) that liberally borrows from “Jaws,” “Jurassic Park,” “Piranha 3D,” “Alien” and so on. In certain sequences, the references from the first two of these pictures feel so shameless that one ponders whether Steven Spielberg would have a legal case against “The Trench” if he didn’t have much bigger fish to fry.

The cold winter season seems like the perfect time to cozy up with a good horror movie for a night of fright. However, there are some great flicks for the hotter months as well. From slashers chasing camp counselors to summer vacations gone wrong, there's a collection of great summer horror watches.
Movies like Sleepaway Camp and Summer Camp are eerie horror movies that play on the typical themes of summer movies. Others, such as Cabin Fever and The Evil Dead, utilize an appropriate setting to creep the audience out with a seemingly realistic location. These are some of the best summer vacation movies that may make viewers second-guess their fun seasonal plans.

Who doesn't love a good shark movie? Ever since the release of Steven Spielberg's 1975 classic, Jaws, audiences have been fascinated with shark movies. It's a subgenre that has been around for nearly 100 years (since 1936's White Death), but it was Jaws that allowed the shark movies to really take off and garner fans.
Since then, we have seen a variety of fantastic, compelling, bonkers, fun, and utterly ridiculous shark movies that all gain an incredible amount of success, despite their quality. From Deep Blue Sea and Sharktopus to The Reef and The Shallows, all the way to the Sharknado movies and even Jaws rip-offs like Piranha 3D, there is no denying that shark movies are a ton of fun, and no matter how weird or bonkers the premise, audiences are always drawn back for more.
