Soundz of Spirit is a documentary that asks about the creative process of Hip Hop and where does the influence come from. Artists like Goapele, KRS-One, Common, Talib Kweli, Nappy Roots, Shock G, the Last Poets, Medusa, Saul Williams, DJ Q Bert, as well as, local California artists, describe their inspiration from answers that range from the spiritual to social influences. This documentary is able to capture the love and dedication that artists have for Hip Hop by explaining why they sacrifice all for the willingness to be able to express themselves truthfully and uncensored. Soundz of Sprit tries to define Hip Hop culture by its internal workings of the artists which is different from how it is portrayed by mainstream media. For this reason alone it is worth seeing.
I liked this. I first watched Freestyle: Art of Rhyme, which is a similar hiphop documentary focusing on the creative process of freestyle and then I stumbled upon this, so I thought I'd check it out.
I enjoyed the soundtrack, which introduced me to a few new artists that I'd never heard. It had some nice footage from the artists that it names and it gives insight into the spiritual/creative essence of hip hop and the love and artistry involved in creating it. Overall, this was a good documentary, down to earth and real. I'd recommend Freestyle- Art of Rhyme, which has some more good footage.
I haven't rated this but I thought it was a genuine piece of work. It endeavours to get close to the heart of hiphop and rhyme and I respected and appreciated that.
