After nearly two decades playing a major part in Toei Animation's One Piece anime series, Franky's official voice actor, Kazuki Yao, is stepping down permanently from the role.

Via One Piece's official X (formerly Twitter), longtime voice actor for the Straw Hat Pirates' Franky, Kazuki Yao, will step down from playing the character. The official statement reads, "[Announcement of replacement of Franky]. Kazuki Yao, who is currently playing the role of Franky in the TV anime One Piece, will be graduating from the Straw Hat Pirates. This decision was reached after lengthy discussions. We will announce a successor during the Super Stage Red at Jump Festa 2025 on Sunday, December 22nd, and hold a graduation ceremony for Yao-san."

There were several anime shows and franchises that hit big in the 1990s, with this era being seen by many as the start of the medium's international dominance. This saw brands such as Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball and Pokmon become the juggernauts that they still are to this day. There were also several beloved yet somewhat overlooked shows that might need a second iteration to receive their due respect.

The 1990s had a host of anime that would be perfect for modern remakes, especially since this concept has become more common in recent years. These include mecha and cyberpunk classics to kid-friendly works and a drift racing gem. Japanese automotive giant Toyota is set to debut a brand-new anime series titled Grip. Scheduled for release on Feb 26, 2024, the five-episode series will be available weekly on Toyota’s official website.

The anime series is produced by Long Beach-based marketing agency Intertrend, and aims to use the essence of Japanese animation with Toyota’s renowned Gazoo Racing motorsport division, to capture both Gen-z and young Asian-American demographics.

A new trailer was revealed to commemorate the announcement.

The series follows protagonist Jae Kang and his companions as they navigate a futuristic metropolis controlled by the tech conglomerate SynthCorp. The series unfolds in a time where the joy of driving has been suppressed by SynthCorp’s dominance. Led by the enigmatic Dr. Synth, the corporation has convinced the public of the superiority of its cookie-cutter vehicles, which he has successfully persuaded the public to perceive as safer, more efficient and will lead to a more controlled society.

Crunchyroll and Kodansha are teaming up to release an exclusive manga omnibus for Initial D.

According to Crunchyroll's official site, Kodansha is republishing Shuichi Shigeno's classic racing manga with a series of new commemorative covers for each respective volume. The first omnibus, which compiles Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 of Initial D, features orange-hued foil-stamped artwork of the AE86 Trueno, the car that protagonist Takumi Fujiwara drives in the series. The new edition also includes an updated English translation. The omnibus is available now for pre-order via Crunchyroll's online shop. However, due to licensing/shipping restrictions, it can only be shipped to those residing in either the U.S. or Canada. Vol. 1 is scheduled to hit shelves on March 19, 2024.

The Free Comic Book Day 2024 lineup has been announced, and this also means plenty of free manga titles along with the more traditional Western comic book offerings.

As reported on the Free Comic Book Day official website, a total of 48 titles will be available for free at all participating local comic book stores on May 4, 2024. 12 Gold Sponsor comics and 36 Silver Sponsor comics have been announced for 2024's selection, including manga such as One Piece, Initial D and Pokémon Adventures, among many others.

Free Comic Book Day, also known as Fcbd, is an annual tradition dating back to 2002. In 2001, comic store owner Joe Field wrote a column pitching the idea in the industry magazine Comics & Games Retailer, and a year later, on May 4, 2002, the first annual Free Comic Book Day was held.

Yabushita, a company dedicated to eyewear, recently unveiled its official "Initial D AE86 Image Glasses" on its main website. As the name suggests, they feature a design inspired by the vehicle of main protagonist, Takumi Fujiwara, who drives a modified Toyota Sprinter AE86 in the series. Due to the specialized design, the glasses can be worn for either fashion or utility, as the lenses can be switched out by an optician. Tokyo Drift star Sung Kang says that he is currently developing a new Initial D film based on the original manga -- an expression of his love for cars.

The Korean-American actor has teased that the movie will be a faithful adaptation of the original manga. Kang is best-known to Fast & Furious franchise fans as Han, a recurring character first introduced in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. This Fall season Crunchyroll has started releasing episodes for Mf Ghost and Overtake! The Man Who Races, giving audiences not one but two racing anime shows after years without them. The genre hasn't had much representation in recent years, so it would be a waste to skip out on either while they're airing. This may be the best chance to watch racing anime and understand the allure of cars in animation.

It's been nearly a decade since Initial D's last season was broadcast, and since then car shows have been a minority and out of sight. We’re going to cheat right off the start by counting this whole series and one entry on this list. The films here are action-comedy classics for fans of French movies and those who love a good car stunt. The first established the characters, but the second is possibly the best of the bunch. Only die-hard fans will want to bother from the third to the fourth to the fifth. However, those first two are worth seeking out what the French do with a modified Peugeot 406, the vacation town of Nice, and a cast that most will recognize from other movies.

Anime is an endlessly versatile animated storytelling that grows more ambitious and creative with each passing year. There are modern anime classics like Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, or Fruits Basket, but it’s fair to say that none of these current hits would be where they are without the innovative series from the ‘90s.

The ‘90s were a crucial turning point for anime that helped expand the medium’s horizons as well as introduce some series that have become permanent parts of the anime landscape. There are naturally some ‘90s series that are products of their time, but there are even more standout programs that pushed anime forward.

Mf Ghost began publication in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine in 2017, over 20 years after its predecessor started. Unfortunately, it hasn't had nearly as much mainstream success or recognition as Initial D, however. This stems from the quality of the work itself to how much the first series was a product of its time. Now that Mf Ghost is getting an anime adaptation, its relation to Initial D and comparative lack of success is worth exploring.

The Facebook page Anime Tournament recently held a 32-contender bracket contest to establish the best anime show of the '90s. The tournament received an upset victory as the crown unexpectedly went to Yu-Gi-Oh!, which won with 9.9k votes compared to the second-place winner, which scored 7.1k. Jujutsu Kaisen has unveiled its second Pv, where fans can hear the opening theme song for Season 2 before it premieres in July.

Acclaimed animation studio Mappa held Mappa Stage 2023, where various anime from the studio, including Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan, revealed exciting announcements for their upcoming seasons. Jujutsu Kaisen dropped a second Pv, previewing the opening theme song, "Ao no Sumika," performed by Tatsuya Kitani. In featuring the "Kaigyoku/Gyokusetsu" arc where a young Gojo and Geto attend Tokyo Jujutsu High, the Pv also shared a glimpse of Gojo activating Cursed Technique Reversal: Red near the end.

Crunchyroll announced several new anime series they've acquired the rights to at AnimeCentral today, ranging across genres and including some anticipated titles.

Summer 2023 will see seven series being localized in the coming months, covering release dates all the way out to October. Perhaps the most anticipated on the list is romantic comedy series Rent-a-Girlfriend, which is returning for its third season, and has now been confirmed for a release on Crunchyroll. Many of the series announced at AnimeCentral are more comedic in nature, including several isekai (other-worldly reincarnation stories).

Summer 2023 Anime to Look Forward to

Among the titles announced at AnimeCentral today are romance series Horimiya: The Missing Pieces and Rent-a-Girlfriend season 3. Horimiya tells the tale of the popular Hori and the dour Miyamura, who uncover new sides of each other as their relationship deepens. The Isekai series include The Great Cleric, Am I Actually the Strongest?, I Shall Survive Using Potions!

HONG KONG -- New Stephen Chow comedy "CJ7", which cleaned up at the local boxoffice during the Chinese New Year holiday period, is providing the inspiration for the world's first film-inspired, motion-sensing mobile phone game, Sony Pictures Television International and Sony Ericsson said Tuesday.

"The high penetration rate of mobile phones in Asia presents us with a growing market for our branded movie and TV-based mobile content," said Rosemary Tan, SPTI's director of mobile entertainment Asia. "The CJ7 mobile pack is a vivid example of our dedicated effort in developing cutting edge mobile content,"

The plot of "CJ7" revolves around a struggling man who discovers the titular alien in a garbage dump one night and presents it to his son as a toy. In the mobile game, users must care for and look after the daily needs of CJ7.

The "E.T".-inspired CJ7 is the first CGI character in a Chinese-language film. It was created by Hong Kong's Menfond Electronic Art, whose portfolio includes "Initial D", "A Chinese Tall Story" and "Fearless".

Rather than use the keypad to control the action of the game, the user need only shake their mobile telephone.

HONG KONG -- A Christmas push from a boy wizard and a giant ape failed to push Media Asia's Initial D off the top rung of Hong Kong's 2005 boxoffice chart, according to figures released by the Hong Kong, Kowloon and New Territories Motion Picture Industry Assn. Harry Potter knocked Pixar's The Incredibles off its second spot with $4.48 million after 10 days of release, while King Kong lumbered into fourth place with $3.92 million. Both Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and King Kong are still in release. Tom Cruise's War of the Worlds managed fifth place with $3.02 million, just slightly ahead of Mr & Mrs Smith which took $2.98 million. These were followed by Howl's Moving Castle, Madagascar and Constantine.

HONG KONG -- Media Asia's Initial D topped the Hong Kong boxoffice for the year through Dec. 16 with a gross of $4.85 million, according to figures released by the Hong Kong, Kowloon and New Territories Motion Picture Industry Assn. The adaptation of a popular Japanese manga of the same name was released during the summer and featured the film debut of Taiwanese singing heartthrob Jay Chou. Chou played a tofu delivery boy with an inherent talent for car racing. Hong Kong's top grosser for 2005 was a steep drop from last year's boxoffice champion Kung Fu Hustle, which became the highest-grossing Hong Kong production of all time with a take of $7.69 million.

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Hong Kong director Jonnie To's Cannes entry Election is the nomination leader going into the 42nd Golden Horse Awards, Taiwan's top honor for Chinese-language films. The nominations were announced Tuesday with the gangland drama receiving nods in 11 categories including best picture, best director and best actor. Stephen Chow's boxoffice hit Kung Fu Hustle stands in second place with 10 nominations with Chow nominated in the best director category and his actors Yuan Wah and Yuan Qiu nominated for best supporting actor and actress, respectively. While other Hong Kong boxoffice hits such as Initial D and Seven Swords received nominations in seven categories, Jackie Chan and Stanley Tong's recent release The Myth failed to be on the shortlist for any category.
