Director Chris Columbus’ delightful mystery comedy movie, The Thursday Murder Club, is a brilliant adaptation of Richard Osman’s novel of the same name. Following four elderly wannabe detectives who use their wits and expertise in their professional sphere to solve real-life crime, the feel-good movie boasts all the old-school sleuth-story stereotypes and narrative trappings. Undoubtedly, the biggest strength of the movie is its star-studded cast, which features quite a few heavyweight veteran actors. The plot itself is not the best, especially in the third act, which feels poorly contrived, but the sheer star power of the movie exudes enough charismatic charm to let viewers forget all about that in a jiffy.

Plot: Based on Richard Osman’s international bestselling novel of the same name, The Thursday Murder Club follows four irrepressible retirees – Elizabeth, Ron, Ibrahim, and Joyce – who spend their time solving cold case murders for fun. When an unexplained death occurs on their own doorstep, their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn as they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands.
Review: The Thursday Murder Club, based on the first in a series of mystery novels, is a wonderfully fun return to form for director Chris Columbus. After helming the first two Harry Potter films, Columbus has directed Rent, Percy Jackson, Pixels, and The Christmas Chronicles 2, none...

In the tradition of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and a flood of other geezer films, The Thursday Murder Club knows exactly what it is: a way to bring together a group of stars who are, let’s say, no longer young, and have them reel in an audience. A mystery about retirees who solve cold cases for fun, it is as gentle as a game of Clue and as cozy as an Agatha Christie novel, but its glittering cast and a touch of self-awareness make up for that lack of originality. This modestly entertaining film is uncool and filled with stock tropes, but it doesn’t pretend to be anything more.
Helen Mirren is in her stern and elegant mode as Elizabeth, the mastermind of the sleuthing, who now and then drops hints that she has a past as an intelligence agent. Celia Imrie (Better Things) is Joyce, Elizabeth’s opposite,...

Good Omens star Michael Sheen owes much of his success to The Crown creator Peter Morgan, who wrote his part of Tony Blair in Channel 4’s The Deal and then the same role in hit movie The Queen.
Today, Sheen, whose storied career has included roles in Good Omens, The Damned United and Frost/Nixon, often playing real-life characters, talked the Edinburgh TV Festival through why he thinks Morgan stands out amongst the crowd.
“The brilliance of Peter Morgan is he cleverly uses people’s expectations of these [real life] people,” said Sheen. “He is brilliant at making you see underneath the veil or see something different from what you expected. And that is very very smart.”
Sheen has four BAFTA noms and throughout his career has drawn particular praise for his portrayal of famous people including Blair, TV host David Frost and soccer manager Brian Clough.

Luca Guadagnino is going to be on the road a lot in the coming months. One day after the Italian filmmaker's latest feature, After the Hunt, joined the Venice Film Festival lineup as an out of competition selection, the New York Film Festival announced that the Amazon MGM-released film will play as the opening night selection of its 63rd edition.
"We are excited to open this year’s festival with Luca Guadagnino’s latest, which confirms his status as one of the most versatile risk-takers working today," NYFF artistic director Dennis Lim said in a statement. "Brilliantly acted and crafted, After the Hunt is something rare in contemporary cinema: a complex, grown-up movie with a lot on its mind that also happens to be a deeply satisfying piece of entertainment."
In his own statement, Guadagnino called NYFF "an arbiter of global cinema," and provided a quick preview of the movie's themes.

On any list of the most admired composers working in film today, Alexandre Desplat would be either at the top or very close to it. That’s not just for the quality of the work — although, as his list of 11 Oscar nominations and two wins would indicate, there is that — but the expanse of styles and sheer breadth of his filmography, whether he’s doing ear-ticklingly eccentric scores for smaller-scale pictures or satisfyingly symphonic ones for the blockbusters.
The French scorer is about to undergo a Hollywood composer’s rite of passage, which some would say is overdue, conducting his first full night of music at the Hollywood Bowl this coming Tuesday night. Exclusive: Ireland’s Playhouse Studios has swooped for troubled UK post-production house Lipsync, saving dozens of jobs in the process.
The Dublin-based Playhouse paid an undisclosed amount to accountancy firm Oury Clark for the assets of The Brutalist post house, we’ve learned.
Deadline revealed in May that Lipsync had effectively filed for the British version of Chapter 11 bankruptcy amid the brutal landscape for post-production companies after the pandemic and Hollywood strikes. Oury Clark took charge of Lipsync’s operations and was working to financially restructure so the post house could pay creditors.
The Playhouse deal ends that process and means Lipsync will not go the same way as the likes of Technicolor, which imploded earlier this year in one of the most spectacular corporate collapses of recent times.

Revolving around the Masire crime family’s exploits to control Johannesburg’s underworld and struggles with a family curse, which acts as a reflection of their sinful, violent life, Netflix’s Kings of Jo’Burg boasts of a strong cast comprising prolific South African actors. In the course of three seasons, the series has gained worldwide recognition thanks to the engaging narrative and strong performance by the cast. There is a distinct African uniqueness presented through the narrative’s amalgamation of occult and crime, and in sync with that, the series’ characterization balances its cultural roots with more topical themes of the country’s plaguing crime problems.

With Netflix series Dept Q., Matthew Goode stars as Dci Carl Morck, a curmudgeonly cop afflicted by Ptsd and almost Sherlock-level powers of deduction. Roland Emmerich is cinema's finest chaos goblin working today. His loudest detractors have accused him of being all spectacle and no substance, but I don't see anyone complaining on the Fourth of July when their fireworks displays don't have enough character development. Subtlety isn't Emmerich's strong suit, and I absolutely love him for it. Give me a spaceship with "F— the Moon" graffitied onto it in a movie called "Moonfall." Use the panic of the "2012" Mayan conspiracy theory to make a movie where a guy literally throws his annoying child to safety in a sacrificial effort. And yes, give me President Bill Pullman delivering an "Independence Day" speech so invigorating, so powerful, it brings about world peace. Emmerich is as much a filmmaker as he is the host of a cinematic demolition derby with a multi-million dollar VFX budget. That is to say, he is an artist of the highest order,...

There are some casts that you would want to watch even if they were being themselves, and sitting around a dinner table talking about whatever. That's the case with the Ocean's 11 crew with George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and all the others. They are entertaining in themselves.
The same can be said of the cast of Netflix's The Thursday Murder Club. A bunch of actors you know from a bunch of things perform their roles as an older group of Brits who go about solving murders for fun. It's a bit like Only Murders in the Building, but...wait. No, it's a lot like that Hulu series.
This is especially true as the plot of Ttmc turns when the three Brits and one Irish lad, played by Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan (he's Irish), Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie, find that a murder has occurred extremely close to them.

Paramount+ is going all-in on its critically acclaimed British crime drama “MobLand.”
Revealed to Variety exclusively, the company is launching an ambitious Emmy campaign that surprisingly places both Tom Hardy and Pierce Brosnan in the running for lead drama actor. The decision to push Brosnan as a co-lead — rather than a supporting contender as many had assumed — is one of several surprising moves in the streamer’s Emmy strategy.
Helen Mirren, meanwhile, will compete for supporting drama actress, avoiding a head-to-head clash with her own work in “1923,” Taylor Sheridan’s Western drama, where she is considered a possible contender for lead drama actress.
Created by Ronan Bennett, “MobLand” centers on Harry Da Souza (Hardy), a fixer for the powerful London-based Harrigan crime family, led by Conrad (Brosnan) and Maeve Harrigan (Mirren). As rival gangs threaten the family’s empire, Harry is tasked with maintaining control and preventing a full-scale war.

Steve Toussaint plays experienced seafarer Corlys Velaryon on House of the Dragon. In the first season, we watched Corlys' life play out over several years; he lost both of his adult children, and at the end of the season lost one of his grandchildren. He's been through it, and will likely still be smarting when the show returns for a third season.
Looking back on season 2, Toussaint named the loss of Corlys' wife Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best) as the thing he remembers most. "I know it sounds silly because we're just acting, but it's the most wrenching thing that she will not be there to continue the journey with me and the rest of us," he told Gold Derby. "And then it's trying to portray several kinds of grief throughout the season, because at the beginning, he's still grieving his children and his grandchild, and then in the middle of that season — wham!

Matthew Goode is ready to rattle some cages in the official trailer for Dept. Q. In less than one month, Netflix will debut the new detective series from The Queen's Gambit creator Scott Frank that features the A Discovery of Witches star as Dci Carl Morck, who's described as "a brilliant cop, but a terrible colleague" with no allies in the Edinburgh police and a lot of guilt on his conscience. A shooting that killed a young officer and paralyzed his partner leaves him feeling responsible, and matters only get worse when his bosses "promote" him to the head of a new department dedicated to cold cases. However, the new basement office is just a PR front to distract an unsatisfied public from their failures. Yet, the footage sees him rising to the occasion and finding new energy with a new team of misfits, making real strides on a long-unsolved case.

Lately, there have been mostly casting announcements keeping us fed, but series star Steve Toussaint recently sat down for an interview with Gold Derby and shared some interesting tidbits.
Gold Derby chatted with Toussaint, who plays Corlys Velaryon in HBO's hit Game of Thrones prequel series, about a wide variety of topics regarding the series: from the set of his character's ship The Queen Who Never Was to his wardrobe to Corlys' secret sons revealed in season 2. But the biggest takeaway from his interview was his tease about season 3 featuring something that one of the directors thinks has "ever been done on television before." Talk about getting us excited for the new season!

She’s reigned (literally) over us for years, playing the queen (among dozens of other roles) in features and series. Now Helen Mirren is bringing that royal presence to TV screens with two performances that couldn’t be more different: Cara Dutton on 1923 and Maeve Harrigan on MobLand.
Even 1923 showrunner Taylor Sheridan wanted to know how he managed to convince her to appear in his series, asking Gold Derby to share his question. “By his writing!” she says, though she admits she said yes without seeing any scripts.
“Both Harrison [Ford] and I, for the first time in our lives, had to commit without reading a single word of the characters or the story or anything. Because Taylor said he likes to write for the actor that he's got, he likes to write knowing who he's writing for, which I thought was very interesting.”
But for Sheridan, she was willing to take the chance.

It's the Battle of the Gullet, a ship-to-ship navel conflict that was originally supposed to serve as the climax for season 2, but which got pushed back. Now, the cast and crew are laboring to bring to life what showrunner Ryan Condal called "probably the most complex sequence that's ever been done for television."
Those are big words, but they're backed up by members of the cast. Steve Toussaint plays Corlys Velaryon, an experienced seafarer who will play a key role in the battle. Before Hailey Gates made her Sundance-winning feature film “Atropia,” the young filmmaker was attempting to make a short film, “Shako Mako,” based on the real-life military training village she ended up depicting in the feature. The fashion brand Miu Miu, as part of its Women’s Tales filmmakers series, helped make it happen. The brand provided clothing, some financing, and other resources, but — above all — was hands-off with the creative.
An Afghanistan War satire might not seem like a particularly relevant brand association for an upscale fashion line, but for Miu Miu, just being in Gates’ orbit makes an impact. Jett Steiger and Lana Kim, who produced “Atropia” via banner Ways & Means, said it’s all about brands trying to find authentic ways to engage with consumers: making content their customers would want to watch, dispatching cool female filmmakers to parties, and using those connections to fuel good PR.

A startling novelty 30 years ago, the film’s now antique effects and strange anti-Orwell farmyard tale feel dated, but is still a quaintly comfortable place to visit
Thirty years ago, a non-Disney talking-animal adventure became a big movie talking point. Babe, adapted from Dick King-Smith’s children’s book The Sheep-Pig, features an adorable piglet who is rescued from a brutally realistic-looking agribusiness breeding shed as his mum and siblings are taken off to be slaughtered; it is then rehomed in a quaintly old-fashioned farm with lots of different animals, situated in an uncanny-valley landscape of rolling green hills which looks like Olde England but where everyone speaks in an American accent. The lead human is grumpy cap-wearing Farmer Hoggett, played by James Cromwell, later to be hard-faced Captain Dudley Smith in LA Confidential and Prince Philip in Stephen Frears’ film The Queen. The first episode of MobLand opens with Tom Hardy’s Harry Da Souza mediating some kind of dispute between two gangs, the Dogans and the Lazarous. It’s only after Harry is sure that the gang leaders, Costa and Mehmet, are ready to shake hands and bury the hatchet that he consults his boss, Conrad Harrigan (being played by the amazing Pierce Brosnan), regarding the next step. Now, Harry thinks that this agreement between the Dogans and the Lazarous isn’t going to last very long. Meanwhile, Conrad reveals that both Costa and Mehmet have been scamming him. Hence, apparently the best decision is to kill them all. While Harry and his associates get the job done, Conrad arrives to put the finishing touches and tells Harry to inform the Maltese that they’ll be filling the gap that’s been left by the death of the Dogans and the Lazarous.

MobLand is a star-studded British crime drama by director/producer Guy Ritchie debuting on Paramount+ on March 30, 2025. Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Dame Helen Mirren headline the series, which began as an American spin-off of Ray Donovan before moving overseas. The drama traces two of London's most influential crime families vying for city control, with a fixer named Harry Da Souza becoming the key link between them.
With 10 episodes slated between March 30 and June 1, MobLand will air the first two episodes upon the debut, followed by weekly episodes every Sunday. In its heyday, "The Crown" represented every shiny thing that streaming-era TV could be. With precise and powerful storytelling, a cast full of stars-in-the-making, and cinematic flair, the historical drama from "The Queen" writer Peter Morgan was as aesthetically masterful and emotionally potent as it was bingeable. The show's early seasons were an awards season powerhouse and a clear-cut case of must-watch TV in an increasingly crowded programming slate.
If this sounds like a eulogy, it's because the best parts of "The Crown" seemed to die with its subject. Where the show's ambitious earlier seasons revealed shattering truths and scathing critiques through restrained performances and symbolic imagery, its later chapters often flailed under the pressure of approaching the present day. In its old age, the show reused its original tricks in increasingly obvious and unconvincing ways, becoming as obsolete to the streaming landscape as its monarch did to the modern world.

As the Thessaloniki Intl. Documentary Festival prepares to host its 27th edition, which runs March 6 – 16, festival director Orestis Andreadakis sees no shortage of threats to truth, freedom and the values on which the democratic order is based. “Four months have passed since the [Thessaloniki Intl. Following a two-year TV absence, Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone spin-off 1923 finally hit Paramount+ on February 23, 2025. As viewers peer into past Dutton family generations as the economic boom of the roaring twenties screeches to a crashing halt with the stock market crash and the Great Depression, one character remains steadfast in their dutiful resolve: Cara Dutton, played by the inimitable Academy Award-winning Dame Helen Mirren.
A compassionate parental figure and often the voice of reason who talks her husband out of foolish decisions, Cara Dutton is arguably the bravest and boldest character in 1923, willing to do anything necessary to protect her family. Beyond such qualities shown in both season debuts, Mirren is arguably the only cast member with the gravitas to steal Harrison Ford's movie star thunder. With only six more 1923 episodes, Cara Dutton should get the proper send-off she deserves.

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in November of 1989, James Bond has struggled with his own relevance. "Licence to Kill" was released that same year, but it proved to be the last James Bond movie for six years. Eon Productions scrambled to came out with "GoldenEye" in 1995, starring Pierce Brosnan, the best James Bond. The title of this movie is the two-word answer to a most unexpected question. Namely: “What do you get if you cross American Sniper, The Last Of Us, Stranger Things, Aliens and Love Actually?” Writer Zach Dean appears unashamed of his influences on this former Black List spec script, and director Scott Derrickson has much fun with them, serving up a frothy B-pic stew. By the time we reach the wink-at-the-audience montage that depicts Miles ‘Whiplash’ Teller and The Queen’s Gambit’s Anya Taylor-Joy bonding over drumming and chess, there is no doubt left that The Gorge can’t, and shouldn’t, be taken too seriously.
The set-up is a doozy. Teller and Taylor-Joy are sexy-but-damaged elite operatives whisked to a super-remote top-secret location by Sigourney Weaver, guest-starring as the token untrustworthy boss-person. Their year-long mission? To stand sentinel over an eerie chasm which may or may not be “the door to Hell”. Only,...

Jeremy Strong is set to star in Netflix’s upcoming series “The Boys From Brazil,” which hails from “The Crown” creator Peter Morgan, according to media reports.
Strong will star in the series, which is based on Ira Levin’s 1976 novel of the same name. The novel, which centers on infamous Nazi hunter Yakov Liebermann, was adapted into a 1978 film directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, which starred Gregory Peck and Laurence Olivier.
“The Boys From Brazil” marks Strong’s next TV role after starring in HBO’s “Succession” as Kendall Roy. His performance in the drama series, which also starred Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, Brian Cox and Matthew Macfadyen, scored Strong three Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, which he won in 2020.
Strong is expected to star as Liebermann, the role played by Olivier in the film.
Netflix declined to comment.

Back in 1976, Rosemary’s Baby and The Stepford Wives author Ira Levin brought the world a conspiracy novel called The Boys from Brazil – and since Levin’s works had previously proven to be the makings of successful film adaptations, it’s no surprise that The Boys from Brazil was quickly turned into a movie. Released in 1978, that feature adaptation of the novel was directed by Franklin J. Schaffner from a screenplay by Heywood Gould and starred Gregory Peck, Laurence Olivier (who received an Oscar nomination for his performance), Steve Guttenberg, and James Mason. That film isn’t quite as popular as Rosemary’s Baby or The Stepford Wives, but it has a strong following – and now Deadline reports that the Netflix streaming service is set to build on that following with a series adaptation of Levin’s novel.
