Why Skyfall Is A Better Anniversary James Bond Film Than Die Another Day
2012 marked the 50th anniversary of James Bond’s cinematic debut in Dr. No and also saw the release of the 23rd James Bond film, Skyfall. Though the film was meant to have been released earlier, financial trouble led to a delay in filming and it is hard to imagine Skyfall not marking the 50th birthday of the cinematic Bond. It was also ten years since Die Another Day, Pierce Brosnan’s final outing as 007 was released. This film, like Skyfall, tried to celebrate the longevity of Bond on the big screen but unfortunately, amongst most of the Bond fandom, it is considered one of the worst films in the franchise and its director Lee Tamahori certainly fails to celebrate Bond in the way Sam Mendes would ten years later.

One thing which Tamahori was praised about was the use of references to previous Bond films in Die Another Day. The...

The unmade films of Quentin Tarantino
Feature Glen Chapman 22 May 2013 - 06:41

With Django Unchained out now on DVD, Glen looks at the Tarantino projects that have yet to be made, and what he might direct next...

Quentin Tarantino's impact on cinema over the past two decades is undeniable, but still, he's something of a divisive filmmaker. There are many who love his character, enthusiasm and output, but there are those who dismiss his work as little more than pastiche.

The enthusiasm he exudes often results in him announcing dream projects that at the time seem unlikely to be made, and for a number of these, this has turned out to be the case. His last two films, Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained, were both teased by the director many years before they went into production, and eventually made it to the big screen. Other Tarantino projects, meanwhile, have been less fortunate.

Here are a...

Interview – Hilary Saltzman On Everything or Nothing: The Untold Story Of 007
The name ‘Broccoli’ has been most closely associated with the James Bond film series over the last 50 years: famously the late Albert R “Cubby” Broccoli, and now his daughter, Barbara (who co-produces the 007 movies with her stepbrother, Michael G Wilson.)

But in the early days — from Dr No (1962) to The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) — another producer shared the Bond film billings with Cubby: Harry Saltzman.

In fact it was Harry, a no-nonsense and flamboyant Canadian, who had originally secured the film rights from Bond author Ian Fleming. Already a successful film producer known for the British kitchen sink dramas Look back in Anger and The Entertainer, Harry teamed up with Cubby and kick-started the 007 franchise with their company, Eon productions.

It wasn’t easy. Harry and Cubby wanted the then unknown Sean Connery to star as Bond while the studio was pushing for a household name. How Saltzman and Broccoli stood their ground,...

DVD Review: 'Everything or Nothing'
★★★☆☆ 2012 will no doubt be seen as a watershed year for 007. On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, one of the most profitable and iconic franchises in film history released an entry directed by a respected Oscar-winner, starring proper actors - including another Oscar-winner as the villain - and successfully reinvigorated the whole idea of James Bond for the new millennium, pocketing in the meantime a billion dollars in worldwide box office. As part of the celebration, Everything or Nothing (2012) offers fans the opportunity to relive the making and evolution of the figure of James Bond from soup to nuts, or perhaps more relevantly from Connery to Craig.

Hilary Saltzman on Bond, Oscars: "Time running out to get them together"
Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman in Tutto o niente - La storia mai raccontata di 007 (2012)
Hilary Saltzman has urged the Academy to bring all six James Bond stars together for next month's Oscars ceremony. Saltzman is the daughter of Harry Saltzman, who produced the first 9 007 movies with Cubby Broccoli, and appears in Bond documentary Everything or Nothing.

Recent rumours have claimed that Oscar bosses are attempting to get Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig to appear together for the ceremony's 50th anniversary Bond celebration. Speaking to Digital Spy, Saltzman suggested that securing Connery could be "the hinging point" for the endeavour. "I hope [the Academy gets them all together] because time's kind of running out a little bit here," she said. "Time is moving on and this is the perfect opportunity (more)...

What to Buy This Week: DVD and Blu-ray releases for Januay 28th
It’s Monday, so we all know what that means! Yes, it’s time for another rundown of DVDs and Blu-ray’s hitting stores online and offline this week. It’s a very light week this week, so let us breakdown the new releases and highlight what you should – and shouldn’t – be buying from today, January 28th 2013.

Pick Of The Week

ParaNorman (DVD/Blu-ray)

In ParaNorman, a small town comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he’ll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst of all, moronic grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But this young ghoul whisperer may find his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits. ParaNorman review

And the rest…

Looper (DVD/Blu-ray)

In the futuristic action thriller Looper,...

Everything Or Nothing: The Untold Story Of 007

Featuring: George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig, Christopher Lee | Directed by Stevan Riley

James Bond is the longest running film franchise in history and with the monumental success of the 23rd movie Skyfall, 007 is still the most enduring and iconic fictional hero of our time. Directed by Stevan Riley (Fire In Babylon) and produced by John Battsek (Searching for Sugar Man, The Imposter) and Simon Chinn (Man on Wire, Searching for Sugar Man) Everything Or Nothing tells the unique story of three men with a shared dream; producers Albert R. Broccoli & Harry Saltzman and author Ian Fleming.

James Bond has been a British icon for fifty years, so from the get-go you know that Everything Or Nothing won’t be able to cover each and every aspect of the series. But it does touch upon the trials and tribulations faced by Ian Fleming,...

A disappointingly CGI TV Christmas… and the Trailer Trash awards 2012

Telly troubles

Christmas movies on TV were all so... how shall I put it? Computer-generated. It seems now that when the major channels look for a family movie they turn rather ploddingly to Pixar. This year felt like wall-to-Wall-e cartoons. Any movie pre-watershed and it's a Toy Story, an Incredibles or, for this New Year's Day treat, for example, an Up that plugs the gap. Although Up may indeed have managed to cram all the power of Michael Haneke's Amour into one six-minute cartoon montage, my gripes are more with the texture and rhythms of seeing all these animations in close array. The hand-drawn charm of Lady and the Tramp on Christmas Eve stood out like a beacon.

The failure of TV programmers to consider that families might want something different has been really worrying. Surely the ideal Christmas movie would bring generations together,...

Everything Or Nothing Review
With 50 years on the silver screen, amounting to 23 movies upon them, Ian Fleming’s James Bond has been an enduring cultural icon of unparalleled longevity and global appeal and among the most worthy recipients of a documentary. Moreover, rather than a biopic of the man behind the novels and his wartime escapades or a chronicling of a particular actor to inhabit the character, Bond, especially on this golden year, deserves and ode as much as an expose. Everything or Nothing delivers just that: a joyous celebration of the legend of 007 that is among the most absorbing, entertaining and accessible films of its format and one frankly I wish was twice as long as it was.

The title Everything or Nothing stems from a phrase said to be the origins of Eon Productions, the house that Harry Saltzman and Albert R. Broccoli set up to first bring Fleming’s character to the screen.

James Bond: why 007 games have almost never worked
Rip-roaring adventure, memorable enemies and beautiful women, the Bond movies should make great games. But they've only made one. Here's why

I can remember my first experience of a James Bond computer game. It was the Commodore 64 version of View to a Kill, released by Domark Software in 1985. I distinctly recall awkwardly driving a tiny block-like taxi around a depiction of Paris that resembled a series of green sticking plasters haphazardly slapped over each other. And I thought to myself, this in no way captures the experience of watching a James Bond movie. It would turn out to be a prescient observation.

Fast forward to 2012 and the latest Bond flick is thrilling movie-goers with its gritty action, complex plot and compelling central performance. But there is no direct video game tie-in. Instead, there are a couple of sequences from Skyfall tucked into a game called 007 Legends, a sort of best-of-Bond compendium,...

HeyUGuys Interview: Skyfall – Producers Michael G. Wilson & Barbara Broccoli
James Bond will return this week.

It’s been a long road to Skyfall, Bond’s twenty-third outing, and as well as our review and red carpet interviews we had the chance to sit down with the cast and crew of the film and over the next three days we’ll be bringing you the six interviews.

Producers and protectors of the Bond legacy Michael G. Wilson & Barbara Broccoli have led Skyfall through a very difficult path to the big screen and as well as talking about securing Sam Mendes as director the pair talk about how they wanted to make the best film to honour the series on its fiftieth anniversary.

Huge thanks to Neil Alcock Aka The Incredible Suit for being our man in the thick of it. If you haven’t been keeping up with his epic BlogalongaBond then now is the time to catch up. When it comes to Bond,...

22 Things You Didn’t Know About James Bond
From 1962’s Dr No to the upcoming Skyfall, James Bond films have been guaranteed to thrill us, grip us, make as laugh and keep us on the edge our seats. And with the plethora of information available in books, on the DVDs and Blu-rays, and in the new cinema documentary Everything or Nothing, there isn’t a lot left to be said about Britain’s foremost secret agent and his cinema exploits. Undaunted, here I present 20 things that you probably don’t know about the James Bond films – surely even the most ardent fan will find a few unfamiliar factoids here.

They are presented roughly chronologically, so let’s begin with the very first Bond…

1. The First Cinematic James Bond Was… Bob Simmons

The first actor to play James Bond was Barry Nelson (who actually played CIA Agent “Card Sense” Jimmy Bond) in a fairly lack-lustre and under budgeted CBS...

Everything or Nothing: The Untold Story of 007 – review
Not surprisingly, given that the producers are John Battsek and Simon Chinn (whose films, separately or jointly, include One Day in September, Man on Wire, Restrepo, The Imposter and Project Nim), this documentary is a good deal more than what you might expect from a promotional film to mark the 50th anniversary of the Bond movies. "Untold", however, is hardly the first adjective that comes to mind when considering such a project. The title Everything Or Nothing comes from the appropriately acronymic title for Eon Productions, the company formed by the North American wheeler-dealers Harry Saltzman (1915-1994) and Albert "Cubby" Broccoli (1909-1996) to make screen versions of Ian Fleming's James Bond novels. The pair struck it rich as harbingers of swinging London.

Everything Or Nothing moves as rapidly and as brutally as the bullet Bond fires into our faces as it deals with Fleming's finally fulfilled fantasies and lust for fame,...

The children of the James Bond producers play happy families at the Everything or Nothing premiere, while a student animator prepares to kickstart the London film festival

Family Bond

The Broccolis and the Saltzmans used to play together. So Monday night was a bit of a reunion as the children of the James Bond producers "Cubby" Broccoli and Harry Saltzman gathered again at the premiere of Everything or Nothing, Stevan Riley's doc on the Bond phenomenon.

Despite the squabbles chronicled in the greatly enjoyable documentary, relations are now such that families even got together on stage for an emotional Q&A afterwards. Steven Saltzman, Harry's son, now living in Monaco, could hardly contain his thrill at finally getting to tell his dad's story, although there's more beside that thread in Riley's film. "The thing that nobody knows is that Harry was a spy himself," he told me. "So here was this man,...

QuickClick: George Lazenby Reveals How He Lied His Way Into the Role of James Bond
Since Sean Connery first uttered the catchphrase "Bond... James Bond" in 1962's Dr. No, there have been six actors hired to play Britain's most notorious spy, who is celebrating his golden anniversary. Yesterday marked 50 years of Bond since Dr. No first entered theaters, and the secret agent is doing better than ever. A new Blu-Ray boxed set of the 22 James Bond films was recently released, and the documentary Everything or Nothing: The Untold Story of 007 debuted yesterday on Epix, both of which help set the stage for the upcoming Skyfall, Bond's 23rd adventure and current Bon Daniel Craig's third movie as the character.

Only one actor has the distinction of playing James Bond for a single movie and that's George Lazenby. Back in 1967, Connery had retired as Bond, leaving producers Albert Broccoli and Harry Saltzman and director Peter R. Hunt to search for another actor. Enter the Australian newcomer who,...

Liberal Arts (12A)

University applications could well go into terminal decline as a result of this irritatingly winsome comedy, in which an archetypal New York slacker returns to his alma mater, meets an archetypal free-spirited young student (Olsen) and relives his lost youth of music, books and self-absorbed pseudo-intellectual chit chat. It's like Woody Allen without the wit.

Life as a high-school outsider never looked so appealing as in this well-intentioned coming-of-ager, in which Lerman's loner is adopted by a band of bohemian outcasts. Watson's post-Potter moment is somewhat overshadowed by the flamboyant Miller.

'Bond 50' Review: The Year's Best Blu-ray Set
Sean Connery, Martine Beswick, Daniela Bianchi, Robert Shaw, Lisa Guiraut, and Aliza Gur in A 007, dalla Russia con amore (1963)
In the age of the cloud, digital copies, and online rentals, a physical medium as a home video option loses relevance every day, but every year a handful of releases almost require a purchase. It takes an attention to detail and a dedication to the consumer to make any DVD or Blu-ray worth the price or even the physical space the box takes up.

"Bond 50," the new collection of all 22 Eon films, several on Blu-ray for the first time, is simply a must own for fans and arguably the best home video release of the year.

By definition, a well-priced set including every official Bond film is something to get excited about, and the films are the real draw here. Currently sitting at $150 on Amazon, that works out to $6.82 per Bond movie on Blu-ray. Each film has been lovingly transferred, but the Connery era will astound you with its clarity.

Everything Or Nothing: The Untold Story of 007: review
This 50th anniversary doc has enough for fans to enjoy, but it's missing real 007-style thrills and spills – and a word or two from Sean Connery

It's the Bond movies' 50th birthday: time for an official documentary celebrating the franchise. This is very much Eon Productions' corporate love letter to itself, of course, and the 1967 spoof movie Casino Royale, starring Peter Sellers – a non-Eon rogue product – is not mentioned. But any Bond fan will find it entertaining, and what emerges is a remarkable movie-industry bromance, between Albert "Cubby" Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, two classic Hollywood moguls. They were never-say-die entrepreneurs who loved Ian Fleming's novels, and found exactly the right way to make them work on screen. ("Eon" was the acronym for their gutsy motto: Everything or nothing.) But there were more than two people in this marriage. Scottish unknown Sean Connery was the star they created. Connery knew...

Cinema Retro Attends The New York Premiere Of "Everything Or Nothing"
By Lee Pfeiffer

As a political junkie, I didn't think anything would tempt me to miss last night's much-anticipated first debate between President Obama and former Gov. Mitt Romney, but an invitation from Eon Productions to attend the New York premiere of the acclaimed documentary Everything or Nothing: The Untold Story of James Bond proved too tempting to resist. The film is a triumph for director Stevan Riley and his team, who worked for over a year and a half to put together the most unique look at the longest-running series in cinema history. The event took place at the Museum of Modern Art. The screening itself, in digital format, was enthusiastically received by all including some people who profess not to be particularly enamored of the films themselves but who felt the angle of covering the human side of the producer's stories was successful and engrossing on all levels.

Bond Documentary 'Everything Or Nothing' Is A Must Watch
Everything or Nothing (2007)
Tomorrow, October 5, marks the 50th anniversary of the release of "Dr. No" and the birth of a movie icon. Fittingly, the world has turned its attention to James Bond over the last few weeks, in the lead-up to the golden anniversary and the release of the newest 007 adventure, "Skyfall."

For fans of the series, "Everything or Nothing: The Untold Story of 007" is something you cannot afford to miss. The new documentary from director Stevan Riley, premieres October 5 on the Epix channel, and we are proud to bring you an exclusive clip from the film.

Click past the jump to learn more about "Everything or Nothing."

The feature-length documentary succeeds because of what it isn't. Instead of being a horning blowing, hour-and-a-half commercial for the also fantastic "Bond 50" Blu-ray set and "Skyfall," "Everything or Nothing" takes a surprisingly honest approach to retelling the tale behind the franchise.

Why James Bond Is The Golden Goose
Daniel Craig in Skyfall (2012)
Los Angeles -- Over the last 50 years, the owners of the James Bond movie franchise have had heart-stopping crises as thrilling as the ones that face their fictional secret agent.

They've nearly gone bust more than once and have come close to losing all of their rights in court.

But the franchise has survived and thrived under the family of late producer Albert R. "Cubby" Broccoli, whose name has graced every official Bond intro since "Dr. No" in 1962.

The son of Italian immigrants was a risk-taker, and his earlier ventures included farming the vegetable bearing the Broccoli name that his uncle brought to America. After years of hustling his way into Hollywood, Broccoli fought for the movie rights to the Ian Fleming novels and passed his faith in the British spy tales to his children.

"Cubby used to say, `This is the goose that laid the golden egg, keep it safe,...

Holy Motors (18)

(Leos Carax, 2012, Fra) Denis Lavant, Edith Scob, Eva Mendes, Kylie Minogue, 116 mins

A freewheeling lunatic love letter to cinema, or a self-indulgent headscratcher that's not worth trying to decipher? Carax's episodic odyssey dazzles and mystifies in equal quantities. Life, death, cinema: it's all interchangeable here, as Lavant cruises Paris in his limousine/mobile dressing room, assuming wildly different roles for unspecified "clients". The wheels threaten to come off with every swerve, but it's an occasionally astounding drive on the wild side.

Looper (15)

(Rian Johnson, 2012, Us) Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt. 118 mins

As he did with high-school movie Brick, Johnson takes a tired genre into fresh territory here, with a time-travel sci-fi that's smart, original, exciting and destined for cult status. Gordon-Levitt and Willis play young and old versions of the same assassin, with Gordon-Levitt having to either kill his older self or team up with him to bring down a dodgy system.

Shake Yourself A Martini And Celebrate Global James Bond Day On October 5
Mark your calendars and remember to press your tuxedos, renew your license to kill and (most importantly) shake yourself a dry martini—October 5 is, I'm beyond thrilled to report, Global James Bond Day, a worldwide celebration of all things Agent 007 marking the 50th anniversary of Dr. No, the first James Bond film starring Sean Connery which debuted in London on October 5, 1962.

"We are absolutely thrilled to be celebrating James Bond's golden anniversary on film with this special day of events for Bond fans around the world," announced the film franchise's producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. In addition to me calling off work "sick" that day and spending the weekend watching all 23 Bond films in chronological order… ahem… the day's festivities will include an online 007-themed charity auction, a Bond retrospective at the MoMA, a Bond fashion exhibit in Toronto, a concert of all Bond music at the Academy...

Buy another day: join me for a budget James Bond celebration
Who needs October's elitist parade of tributes when you can put on your dad's tux and walk around being sexist?

It's been 50 years since James Bond first appeared onscreen in Dr No. In that last half-century, Bond may have got variously taller, and sillier, and nastier, and smarmier, and wiggier, and more fond of safari suits, and briefly more Australian, but despite these superficial changes the character has endured like no other.

That's why, on 5 October – the exact 50th anniversary of Dr No's initial release – Eon, MGM, Sony and 20th Century Fox are planning a global James Bond day. It's a chance for fans around the world to revel in cinema's most beloved alcoholic aristocratic borderline-misogynist state-sponsored murderer, and there will be a raft of glitzy events to accompany it.

So far, these events include the release of a new documentary entitled Everything or Nothing: The Untold Story of 007, a charity auction at Christie's,...
