I did a double take when I saw the headline myself. Despite only launching a week ago, a not inconsiderable number of titles will be leaving HBO Max at the end of June. Logically, distribution contracts that were already running out weren’t going to stop running out just because Warner launched their new service, so you best get on these quick.

HBO is out with its list of everything new coming to HBO in January, and everything leaving.

Highlights include “The New Pope,” out Jan. 13. Starring Jude Law, it’s a continuation of the 2016 series “The Young Pope.”

There’s also “The Outsider,” out Jan. 12. Based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel, it stars Jason Bateman, Cynthia Erivo and Ben Mendelsohn.

“Avenue 5,” about a luxury space-traveling company, is out Jan. 19, along with season 10 of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in January 2020.

A new year will eventually mean a new HBO with the release of HBO Max. But for now HBO Now and HBO Go continue on and are putting their best foot forward with the HBO new releases for January 2020.

Comedy is the name of the game for the HBO originals in January 2020. Larry David returns as Curb Your Enthusiasm season 10 premieres on January 19. Veep creator Armando Iannucci takes his satirical ways to space with Avenue 5 the same night. The New Pope is...sort of a comedy and arrives on January 13. The Stephen King series The Outsider is very much not a comedy but it will come to HBO on January 12 all the same.

The list of movies coming to HBO in January 2020 are surprisingly action-packed as well. John Wick...

Very sadly, there won’t be “one more thing” for Columbo fans. Peter Falk died on Thursday night at his home in Beverly Hills, following a battle with Alzheimer’s. He was 83.

Falk created one of TV’s most iconic personalities in Lt. Columbo, a disheveled-looking and rambling homicide detective who’d arrive at a crime scene clad in a trench coat and full of questions — many of them quietly revelatory — and leave with his prime suspect shaking in their shoes. Since viewers almost always saw who committed the crime in the cold open, the series was described as a “howcatchem” versus a “whodunnit.

Consider it Carrie Bradshaw, 2.0.

According to Variety (via FirstShowing.net), Jessica Parker and Marisa Tomei are close to signing on to star in the romantic comedy "Married and Cheating." The film follows three unhappy married couples as they try to recapture past happiness.

Indie director Raymond de Felitta will write and direct; he helmed 2009's "City Island," as well as 2005's "The Thing About My Folks" and the 2000 Sundance Award winner, "Two Family House."

Parker, of course, is well known for her work in the troubled relationship genre, having starred in the "Sex and the City" TV series and films. In addition to this new film, she has said that she hopes to do a third Satc film.

"I think there's one more story to tell. I know there is," Parker told the newspaper. "I'd definitely tell that [third] story, and I know Michael [Patrick King, series creator] would do it right. But maybe not now.

Chicago – There are many reasons why “City Island” shouldn’t work. It’s entirely contrived, from one end of the script to the other. Every gargantuan misunderstanding in the film has been spawned by festering lies, the kind that sitcoms have thrived on since the beginning of television. Yet what works in a 23-minute TV sketch often becomes tedious and exasperating when stretched to feature length.

This quirky indie comedy from writer/director Raymond De Felitta (“The Thing About My Folks”) aims to be the “Love Actually” of sitcom contrivance, balancing various misconceptions and outrageous twists until they erupt in a shrill expulsion of cathartic revelations. Like so many quirky indies, the film centers on a dysfunctional family, The Rizzos, where each member is secretly living a double life, mirroring the dichotomy of their town’s name, City Island, a small fishing community defined by De Felitta as the Hamptons of the Bronx.

Emmy-nominated U.S. TV editor Sheila Amos has lost her battle with leukaemia, aged 63.

Amos died in her sleep on 11 July at Benedictine Hospital in Kingston, New York.

She received Emmy nominations for her work on hit '90s U.S. series Cheers and Mad About You.

Her TV credits also include Cheers spin-off sitcom Frasier, starring Kelsey Grammer, and the 2005 feature film The Thing About My Folks, starring Paul Reiser and Peter Falk.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Iris Geik, and niece, Johanna Geik.

Sheila Amos, an Emmy-nominated editor, died peacefully of leukemia in her sleep July 11 at Benedictine Hospital in Kingston, N.Y. She was 63.

Amos received Emmy noms for her work on "Cheers" in 1991 and "Mad About You" in 1995. Credits also include sitcom "Frasier" and the 2005 feature "The Thing About My Folks," starring Paul Reiser and Peter Falk.

Raised in Merrick, N.Y., Amos and six others founded the Downtown Potters' Hall on Mercer Street in New York's Soho neighborhood. She moved to Los Angeles in the mid '70s and began her editing career.

In 2007, Amos moved to Woodstock, N.Y. in 2007, where she worked for rock and roll photographer Elliott Landy and reviewed films for the Woodstock Film Festival.

Survivors include her sister-in-law Iris Geik and niece Johanna Geik.

Finally, a little good news at the box office. The little indie-that-could City Island has now grossed $5 million after twelve weekends in theatrical release. The Andy Garcia-Julianna Margulies family drama seems to have struck a nerve with audiences around the country despite its limited run. At its widest release, the PG-13-rated film from Raymond De Felitta (The Thing About My Folks) was in 269 theaters. This weekend it will be in 175 U.S. locations.

In the tradition of great movies based on real game shows (Quiz Show; Slumdog Millionaire), Tobey Maguire is said to be producing and starring in a film called Prisoners of Trebek, based on a true story about a guy who found romance while attempting to master Jeopardy. Pajiba has the exclusive scoop on the project, which was scripted by The Hoax screenwriter William Wheeler and is being likened to the work of Charlie Kaufman. Producing with Maguire's company is Mark Gordon, who worked with Wheeler on The Hoax and regularly collaborates with Roland Emmerich (2012; The Day After Tomorrow).

The Kaufman connection could mean we should expect Alex Trebek to show up as himself in a surreal sort of comedy akin to Being John Malkovich. Or, Trebek could be more similar to Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, which also went behind the scenes of a game show in its biographical portrait...

Los Angeles-based New Films International has completed one of the largest deals to close with the Middle East at the Afm.

Nfi concluded the deal with Lebanon's Falcon Films, which has acquired an eight-title package covering all rights for the Middle East.

The films included in the agreement cover titles in production and completed films, including the relationship drama "Multiple Sarcasms," starring Timothy Hutton; "Serbian Scars," with Michael Madsen; "Frame of Mind," with Chris Noth; and "The Making of Plus One," with Jennifer Tilly and Amanda Plummer.

New Films International president Nesim Hason said this year alone Nfi has closed more than $1 million worth of deals with Falcon.

Other titles included in the package are Mary McGuckan's "Rag Tale," starring Simon Callow and Kerry Fox, and "Palo Alto," with Tom Arnold.

New Films International was formed in 1996 by Hason to bridge the gap between the U.S. and international.

Julianna Margulies, Emily Mortimer and Alan Arkin are joining Andy Garcia and Steven Strait in the indie family comedy "City Island."

Garcia plays Vince Rizzo, a Bronx prison official who realizes that an inmate (Strait) is his secret love child. His efforts to become his guardian lead to comic complications. Margulies plays Rizzo's wife, Arkin plays a teacher in his acting class, and Mortimer plays a fellow student he befriends.

Garcia's daughter Dominik Garcia-Lorido plays his onscreen daughter, and Ezra Miller also stars.

Raymond De Felitta's Medici Entertainment, Garcia's CineSon, Lucky Monkey Pictures' Lauren Versel and Zachary Matz will produce "City," which began shooting this week on location in the eponymous Bronx fishing neighborhood where the story is set.

De Felitta directed "The Thing About My Folks" and the sleeper period indie "Two Family House."

Paradigm Motion Picture Finance Group packaged the project and is repping domestic sales.

Veteran actor Peter Falk has given his fans a huge incentive to watch his new movie The Things About My Folks, by announcing he performs his first nude scene ever in the film. The 78-year-old actor strips down for the first time ever in front of cameras for the recently-released movie - and he promises that fans should like what they see. He says, "I am not totally nude - I'm wearing talcum powder!" His co-star Paul Reiser explains, "We're very proud of it. It's a lovely dance he does with talcum powder. Peter basically is playing my father. My father used to use more talcum powder than you could ever imagine. He'd come out of the shower and the floor around the whole house would be like a scene from Scarface. There would just be acres of (powder on the floor)."...

Sidney Lumet and Peter Falk have been named recipients of lifetime achievement awards at the eighth annual Savannah Film Festival. The festival, sponsored by the Savannah College of Art and Design, is scheduled for Oct. 29-Nov. 5. Natasha Richardson, who stars in the upcoming Merchant Ivory film The White Countess, has been tapped to accept the achievement in cinema award. James Franco is being honored for The Ape, a movie he wrote, directed and in which he stars. Buck Henry, who wrote The Graduate and directed Heaven Can Wait, is scheduled to talk about his films. Lumet, the recipient of the Honorary Oscar at this year's Academy Awards and whose latest film, Find Me Guilty, is due out this year, will receive his award during opening-night ceremonies. Falk, who stars in Paul Reiser's The Thing About My Folks, will receive his award Nov. 3.

The new theatrical distribution company, born in March out of a joint venture between HBO and New Line Cinema, and headed by Bob Berney, was officially christened Friday -- it's to be called Picturehouse. Already off and running, Picturehouse has acquired worldwide rights to Fur, which focuses on famed photographer Diane Arbus, played by Nicole Kidman. The project, which Berney said is "not a traditional biopic, very sexy, very erotic," has begun filming in New York City. It is being directed by Steven Shainberg and also stars Robert Downey Jr. Picturehouse also has acquired North American rights to The Thing About My Folks, which stars Peter Falk and Paul Reiser in a semi-autobiographical film written by Reiser and directed by Raymond De Felitta.

Alejandro Amenabar's The Sea Inside, Spain's entry for the best foreign-language film Academy Award, received the Audience Choice Award for Best Narrative Feature at the 16th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, which concluded Monday. The runner-up was The Thing About My Folks, directed by Raymond De Felitta, and starring Paul Reiser as a son who embarks on a road trip with his father, played by Peter Falk. The Audience Choice Award for Best Documentary Feature went to Yaron Zilberman's Watermarks, which relates the story of the Jewish Sports Club, formed in 1909 and destroyed by the Nazis in 1938, as told by seven women, all former champion swimmers. The runner-up was Seeds, directed by Marjan Safinia and Joseph Boyle, which concerns children from both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict who participate in the Seeds of Peace Camp in Maine.
