Hannu-Pekka Björkman and Minna Suuronen in Arvon veli (2004)

Recensione di severine-gedzelman

Arvon veli

8/10

A farmer's couple cannot have children. Arvo is waiting for his brother, Veli, a citizen bus driver to come and help for the harvest and wants to ask him another favor.

Short film (only 50 minutes) but a great one in which silence leaves us with many thoughts and has an important impact in understanding nowadays world (this briefness lets us wonder on the standard length of all the other movies, which in many cases is useless ... ) Although the theme is a tortuous situation, "sterility in a couple", one can see through it the nature of Finns ? Being told as a foreigner, that they are shy, not too communicative ; to put it in a nutshell, that psychology has not reached them as much as in other cultures, I have liked this movie as a good introduction to Finnish culture ! Of course, Finns are more than what has simply featured Mika Lehtinen, and the topic tackled with, is in any case a difficult one, that people rarely bring up as any other conversation. So one would expect secrecy. It was thus very interesting to see this inner point of view, showing the lack of communication when it comes to deep feelings between a wife and his husband, or simply between two brothers. It is a relief to find drama once again dealt without too many words. This movie is also a great example of the remaining opposition between country side people and citizens. Many Finns are farmers and it seems rarely shown on movies. A quote from the movie showing the difference of mentality between Veli the city brother and Arvo, his brother from the country side : "V. - why don't you put a radio in your car? A. - what for, if we don't listen to it? ... V. - why don't you buy a phone? A. - what for if we never call anyone".
