Just Indian

I had absolutely no expectations when I saw this film. Even so, I was disappointed by the quality of the acting. This was obviously an amateur effort and it had neither a good narrative or good performances, which are obviously necessary given that it is an 'econo' production.

I've been in the US for close to 6 years now and there really wasn't a single scene that I could really relate to. Maybe that had to do with the shoddy treatment but even so, the film seems to cater to stereotypical ideas of FOBS and ABCDs and to notions that are anachronistic. If this film had been made in the late 90's, the scenes depicted might have been perfectly apt. India has changed drastically in the last few years and the lines have really blurred. Several people in India have an outlook that may be even more liberal than that of those that have been born here.

Anyway, I'm done ranting. I sincerely believe that students in film school could do a lot better given a handycam, and a pretty cheap one at that.

I just finished watching this film. A friend of mine had recommended this to me. I liked the movie very much, mainly for its slick dialogues. I'm surrounded by Indians and have many Indian friends. I've learnt so much about the Indian culture in the past 15 years. This movie truly showcases the lifestyle of young Indians in the west. I guess, the other ethnic communities also suffer the same assimilation hurdle. Inspite of the good story line and awesome music this film suffers in acting. I was very much disappointed by the acting of Sonia, Rai, Scott and Dimple. The characters weren't too convincing except Cherry (the Sikh guy)and Tina. They did a wonderful job. Story was good, however, screenplay could have been better. Just a suggestion to "Sonny Jhamb", that next time do not wear too many hats.

The acting is really poor and disorganized. It was sad watching the movie and I had to look really hard to find something good. Need to really look into first generation Indian society in US to make a decent movie.

I saw this film at the anthology film archives twice and must say that thought it was pretty damn good for a first film. The acting wasn't great but the script wasn't bad and more importantly the filming was pretty darn good. The only true issue I had was with the acting and the way it was directed could have been better. A typical case of having all your cards in order but then lacking good actors. I thank Mira Nair would be proud. . .but again good first attempt for a first time director. I hope that we can see many more films from Mr. Sonny Ghamb in the future.
